Trailhead Ambassador program launches

Saturday, February 20, 2021

The Trailhead Ambassador program will launch in summer 2021, following public health guidelines. Volunteer Trailhead Ambassadors will serve as a welcoming entity at popular trailheads to answer recreation related questions, promote responsible hiker ethics like Leave No Trace, and collect trail use information for agencies and nonprofits.

Trailhead Ambassadors, a brand-new volunteer program, is launching this summer in the Snoqualmie Corridor area, where recreational trails see some of the largest numbers of visitors in Washington. The Trailhead Ambassadors program is currently recruiting volunteers to educate and empower visitors on trails and public lands within the I-90 corridor.

In recent years, trail use has increased exponentially. This program is a direct reflection of the need to provide more resources to trail users about how to recreate responsibly. Volunteer Trailhead Ambassadors will be stationed throughout the summer at popular trails around the region such as Poo Poo Point (Chirico Trail), Twin Falls, Mt. Si, Rattlesnake Ledge, and Franklin Falls.

Volunteers will go through a virtual training that will cover topics such as: ways to engage public users, how to provide information about recreational trails, and education about how to play an active role in caring for trails and public lands to ensure safe and sustainable trails for future use.

Trailhead Ambassadors will spend their time at trailheads engaging with trail users directly where they are recreating. They will not only act as a welcoming face, but also be available to answer questions and provide resources. In a world where outdoor recreation grows each year, this program will be a necessary component in spreading the word about using local trail systems, and ways to protect and steward them.

If you enjoy hiking, conservation, and the outdoor community, consider applying to be a Trailhead Ambassador volunteer!

Volunteer recruitment and access to our online training will begin in March, and for those interested in learning more, please attend one of our Zoom informational sessions. Pending public health guidelines, you will start to see Trailhead Ambassadors at local trailheads starting in summer of 2021. You can find more information on our website here.

Trailhead Ambassadors was formed by a partnership of land managers, nonprofits, local community members and businesses, and facilitated by the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust. Partners include Washington State Parks, Washington State Department of Natural Resources, US Forest Service, Cedar River Watershed, Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, Washington Trails Association, The Mountaineers, Issaquah Alps Trails Club, King County Search and Rescue, Seattle Outdoor Adventurers Meetup group, and REI.

Council seeks volunteers for voters’ pamphlet pro and con committees for potential Shoreline Proposition 1: General Obligation Bonds Parks Improvements and Park Land Acquisition

Monday, January 18, 2021

Hillwood Park

At their January 11, 2021 meeting, the Shoreline City Council indicated they intend to move forward with placing a bond measure for parks improvements and park land acquisition on the April 27, 2021, special election ballot.

The measure could include money for parks improvements and park land acquisitions. Council is scheduled to make a final decision at their January 25 meeting.

Accompanying the April ballots will be the King County Voters’ Pamphlet.

The pamphlet will include an explanatory statement from the City that states the effect of a bond measure if approved.

In response will be statements in support and opposition to the ballot measure.

State law requires the City Council to appoint two committees to draft the pro and con statements.

The committees can have no more than three members each; however, the committees may seek advice from any person or persons. The committees will also have an opportunity to write a rebuttal statement to the other side’s statement.

Individuals interested in applying for one of the committee positions can fill out an online application. Applications are due by February 4 at 10:00am.

The City Council will review the applications and appoint the committee members at its February 8 business meeting.

To learn more about the requirements for the voter’s pamphlet and the duties of the pro and con committees, review the 2021 Jurisdiction Manual at King County Elections.

Volunteers make our world go round - PTA Holiday Basket event serves 700 families

Tuesday, December 15, 2020

Your heart will be warmed by this news! Shannon McMaster and Stacy Cotton (and Stacy's mother Marti who made masks for the 75 volunteers) are educators and super organizers who have been long time supporters of and volunteers for the Shoreline PTSA Holiday Basket program.

They, with the help of Shoreline PTA Council co-presidents Amy Reed and Heather Segars, organized envelopes with gift cards and pick-up times for nearly 700 Shoreline Schools families.

On December 12, 2020 their newly designed Covid Safe Holiday Basket event took place for families who have children enrolled in the Shoreline School District and could use a little extra help this Holiday Season.

Each family received gift and grocery cards in a drive through event at the Shoreline Center.

Nearly 700 families and several thousand children (upwards of 1500) received gift cards for gifts and a $100 card for groceries.

This super organized event handed out over $110,000 in gift cards including $50,000 in grocery vouchers from the city of Shoreline, donations from Shoreline and Lake Forest Park Rotaries, Alpha Delta, Hopelink, the Shoreline Fire Department, Dale Turner YMCA and numerous community individuals.

Special thanks to Shannon and Stacy, volunteers and contributors who made the holidays a little brighter for many!

City of LFP seeks volunteers to serve as community reps if needed for a police use of deadly force investigation

Wednesday, November 18, 2020

The City of Lake Forest Park is currently seeking volunteers from the Lake Forest Park community who are willing to serve as non-law enforcement community representatives if an independent investigation becomes necessary to investigate the use of deadly force by a Lake Forest Park Police officer.

Washington’s Law Enforcement Training and Community Safety Act (LETCSA) requires that an independent investigation team (IIT) investigate any use of deadly force by a police officer when it results in death, substantial bodily harm, or great bodily harm.

The goal is to enhance accountability and increase trust between law enforcement and the community.

The IIT will consist of a team of qualified and certified law enforcement investigators and at least two non-law enforcement community representatives — possibly from the area where the incident had occurred.

The City Administrator will work with the Lake Forest Park Police Department Administration to appoint up to ten individuals to a roster. If an independent investigation is required, two or more individuals will be selected from the roster to serve on the IIT. The IIT will operate independently of any involved agency to conduct the investigation.

The IIT will conduct the investigation in the same manner as a criminal investigation. State law requires that the investigation be completely separate from the involved agency. Enabling community members to assess whether the investigation process is conducted in a trustworthy manner enhances accountability.

The non-law enforcement community representatives are a vital link between the IIT, the community, and the investigation.

Once state regulations are published in January 2021, the community representatives will participate in the selection of IIT investigators, review conflict of interest statements, be present at briefings, have access to the completed investigation file, be provided a copy of press releases and communication prior to released, and review notification of equipment use by the involved agency.

Community representatives will sign a binding confidentiality agreement.

If you are interested in applying to be a volunteer non-law enforcement community representative, please fill out the following online application by 4:30pm on Friday, December 4, 2020.

Goat at Midvale Garden

Earthcraft Farms will have their goats at the Midvale Garden worksite, N 192nd and the Interurban Trail, on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. This is their last scheduled day.

The site is on property belonging to Seattle City Light, which will allow passive use of its property as long as no permanent structures are installed.

Neighbors, led by Derek Creisler and David Chen, have been working with the City of Shoreline, City Light, Diggin' Shoreline and neighborhood volunteers to clear the site, which was covered with blackberries and undergrowth and had become a popular spot for homeless camps and drug use.

From working with the volunteer group Diggin Shoreline their efforts qualified them this spring for a Mini-Grant from the City of Shoreline Department of Environmental Services to bring in the goats.

Correction: goats were obtained with an Environmental mini-grant from the City of Shoreline

Senior Center needs volunteers to be To-Go Lunch Delivery people

Thursday, September 3, 2020

Each day Monday through Friday our delivery volunteers arrive at the Senior Center at 10:45am with their masks on.

We check you in at our door and take your temperature to make sure no one has a fever. There are specific Food Handling and Covid19 protocols -we will train you

The hot lunches are brought to the lobby on carts and the delivery people take the carts out to our shuttle and load then on the van (around 10:50)

Each delivery volunteer receives a list of who is getting a meal today and the driver will follow the delivery list.

When you arrive at the recipient’s home you would take the meal at their door and hand it to the recipient.

Delivery is usually done by 12:30pm and you return to the Senior Center before 1pm.

On Fridays we have two people on each shuttle to deliver because we give each person their Friday meal and a grocery bag of food for the weekend.

Sound interesting? Give Donna at the Shoreline / Lake Forest Park Senior Center at 206-365-1536. The best time to call is between 1-3pm.

Hungry goats are helping to clear the site of the Midvale Community Garden

Sunday, August 30, 2020

This area of the Midvale Community Garden was cleared by volunteers in multiple work parties. The Interurban Trail runs through the property. Photo by David Chen.

On a little strip of land, just one block north of Sky Nursery on the InterUrban Trail sits an unused parcel of land full of invasive plants and discarded trash.

But for several Echo Lake residents, the strip represents the opportunity to breath new life into an overlooked part of the neighborhood.

Thus was born the vision for the Midvale Community Garden, a place where the community can gather, learn about urban permaculture, and find a place of spiritual renewal in an ever-expanding concrete world.

Although COVID-19 has slowed the construction process, partnership with the City of Shoreline, Diggin Shoreline, and Earthcraft Services has brought twelve hungry goats to hold back the vegetation.

"Our hope is to break ground next Spring on building space that is inclusive, community-centered, and serves one of Shoreline's most diverse communities," said David Chen, one of the project's volunteers.

The initial garden design includes educational features, garden plots, ADA accessibility, and a nature play area. The goats will be on site on September 19-20 and 26-27.

Americorps team helped set up Shoreline Isolation and Recovery Center for patients

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

WCC volunteers and team leaders practice Physical Distancing
at the Shoreline Isolation and Recovery Center

From the Department of Ecology

When building hiking trails, planting native trees or shrubs, or responding to local or national disasters, Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) AmeriCorps members are used to practicing flexibility.

When field activities were temporarily suspended in mid-March to prevent further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, AmeriCorps members adapted quickly, with some WCC members and staff supporting our state’s response to the coronavirus outreach by setting up shelters in King County

When responding to a natural disaster, WCC supervisors and members are often tasked with setting up and leading volunteer reception centers in affected areas. This experience came in handy last week when King County Emergency Management set up multiple sites for people to isolate and recover from COVID-19.

“Folks continued doing an impressive job of physical distancing, despite needing to collaborate together on almost every task,” she said.

Staff and members safely unloaded desks, shelving units, beds, footlockers, side tables, and chairs to support the shelters, serving alongside contractors and Team Rubicon volunteers.

AmeriCorps member Celia Thurman was interested in setting up shelters to help her local community.
“Shoreline is actually 10-15 minutes from where I grew up,” Celia said. “It felt like I was helping the community, and that means a lot to me. When we got there, the tents were set up on a soccer field. I grew up playing soccer on that field, and babysat in that neighborhood.”

AmeriCorps member Akiva Gebler talked about the impact of setting up medical facilities.

“In a time when the most people can do to help is to stay home, it was in many ways a privilege and an honor to be able to serve the county and local community by physically helping set up field hospitals,” Akiva said. “My hope is that our service will make it easier for the medical staff to safely and effectively do their jobs.”
