Shoreline Community College Athletics will be holding summer volleyball camps for students in Grades 5 through 12, this summer at the campus, 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

Camp Descriptions

Volleyball All-Skills Camp

Volleyball fundamentals for boys and girls grades 5-12. This Camp is designed for all levels of players: beginners, intermediate, and advanced. Players will be divided by level of play. Coaches will demonstrate, explain volleyball techniques, and run drills to maximize as many contacts as possible.

Volleyball High School Freshman Camp

Designed for those entering High School/grade 9. This camp will prepare players to compete for a spot on their school team. Players will be divided by positions, experience and ability levels. Focus is on training, improving techniques, developing skills and team work. Receive advice on showcasing skills for High School tryouts using strengths and abilities to secure a spot on a team.

Volleyball High School Advanced Camp

Designed for varsity players grades 9-12 who are competitive and want to get ready to play for a varsity team. Focus on individual skills and team work. Players will work on strategies and the mental game needed to win their games. Campers will work with Shoreline College coaches. This camp is very popular so we recommend early registration.

Volleyball Setter, Libero, and Hitter Camp

For advanced competitive level players grades 9-12. Focus on position/skills needed for play in High School or competitive situations. Each player will receive personalized instruction to master keys to success. Enrollment is limited. This camp is very popular so we recommend early registration.

Camp proceeds will be used to support Shoreline Community College Athletics and Varsity Sports and may include paying for or sponsoring any of the following: student-athlete scholarships; team uniforms and equipment; tournament fees; travel expenses; team events including trips, meals, awards, and banquets; indoor and outdoor facility rentals; media and technology (hardware and software); training and professional development; membership with professional organizations; and additional coaches’ salaries.

Coach Bios: Co-Head Coaches Raquel Chumpitaz-West and Mark West have coached at Shoreline for the last 19 years. They have both played at National Championships and internationally. Coach Raquel received the Washington NWAC Volleyball Coach of the Year and NWAC Northern Region Coach of the Year awards in 2015. She is a former Olympian who played in Moscow, 1980. 

They both coach boys and girls teams for their SpaceNeedle Volleyball Foundation. Shoreline’s Volleyball team has been Northern Region Champions in 2015, 2011, 2010, and 2001 and placed second in the NWAC in 2002.

Two Shorewood players on All-Wesco volleyball first team

Two Shorewood volleyball players won places in November on the all-Wesco-3A/2A first team.

Western Conference 3A/2A coaches selected Shorewood senior outside hitters Delaney Hopen and Elli Allen-Hatch to the 10-member all-conference first team and put two Shorewood players and one from Shorecrest on the all-Wesco 3A second team.

On the second team were Shorecrest senior outside hitter Bailey Rutter, Shorewood junior setter Taryn Shelley and Shorewood junior libero Maria Bartell.

Honorable mention went to three Shorecrest players: senior setter Julia Clack, junior libero Aiyana Tietze Ditoro and sophomore middle blocker Shelby Gresch.

The selections came from the 12 Wesco 3A teams – Arlington, Edmonds-Woodway, Everett, Glacier Peak, Lynnwood, Marysville Getchell, Marysville-Pilchuck, Meadowdale, Mountlake Terrace, Oak Harbor, Shorewood, and Stanwood -- along with 2A Shorecrest. Unlike teams in many Wesco 3A/2A sports, volleyball and soccer teams aren’t divided into North and South divisions.

Shorewood won the Wesco 3A/2A volleyball championship win a 12-0 record (15-0 overall) before winning three more matches in the Northwest District 3A tournament and splitting four matches in the state tournament, November 13-14, to finish win a 20-2 season record.

Shorecrest finished 10th in the division with a 4-8 Wesco record before losing two matches in the Northwest District 2A tournament, November 4, to finish with a 4-12 record.

The Shorewood junior varsity had an 8-4 Wesco 3A record (9-5 overall) The Shorecrest JVs had a 1-11 record (1-13 overall). The Shorewood “C” team had a 5-6 Wesco 3A record (6-7 overall).

Two SCC volleyball players honored by NWAC

The Shoreline Dolphins' magical Volleyball season continues as two members were honored by the NWAC.

Head Coach Raquel West, fresh off being named the North Region Coach of the Year, was named the NWAC Coach of the Year for the 2015 season. West was chosen from all of the head coaches of the 29 community college volleyball programs in the Pacific Northwest. West led the Phins to a 28-12 overall record, a North Region Title, and a 5th place finish at the NWAC tournament.

Anya Golubitskikh capped off her season by being named to the NWAC Championship All-Tournament Team. Golubitskikh garnered North Region First Team Honors earlier in the week and followed that up by finishing 10th in the NWAC Tournament with 3.44 Kills per game. She had 55 Kills in 5 matches with a .227 Hitting Percentage. Golubitskikh also added 6 Service Aces, 26 Digs, and 11 Blocks through the Phins’ tourney run.

Shorewood takes fourth in State 3A volleyball after 2 wins Friday, 2 losses Saturday

The Shorewood volleyball team placed fourth in the State 3A volleyball tournament in Kennewick after winning two matches Friday and losing in a semifinal and the third-place match Saturday.

Here’s what our news partner, the Seattle Times said after the Saturday matches:

Auburn Riverside took third place Saturday at the Toyota Center with a 3-1 victory over Shorewood, which was satisfied to place fourth. 
Shorewood coach Jennifer Chartrand was emotional after the Thunderbirds’ final match – not because they lost, but because it was her final match with seven seniors who had helped turn the program around. 
“We played some amazing volleyball teams, and for me, I’m just so proud of my girls for coming this far,” she said. “I am thrilled. A fourth-place finish to me is nothing to be upset about.”

Shorewood had lost to Columbia River of Vancouver, 3-0, in a semifinal match earlier Saturday after defeating Auburn Mountainview and Mercer Island Friday. The Thunderbirds finished with a 20-2 season record.

Here’s what the Times said after the Friday victory over Mercer Island:

Shorewood had won a 3-1 Friday quarterfinal over Mercer Island.
Shorewood reached the semifinals for the first time since winning their only title in 1978.
Senior Delaney Hopen hammered 19 kills against MI.

Shorewood volleyball player named WIAA female athlete of the week

Each week throughout the school year, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) recognizes twelve varsity athletes, a male and a female from each of the six classifications, who exhibited an outstanding performance for the previous week.
 
Elli Allen-Hatch, a Senior from Shorewood High School, was nominated by a community member and selected by WIAA staff as one of the Athletes of the Week for achievements in Volleyball.

Allen-Hatch was the leading force moving the Thunderbirds through the District 1 tournament and finishing in first place. She combined for 38 kills, 30 digs, and three aces.
 

In recognition of their accomplishment, each Athlete of the Week winner receives a congratulatory letter from WIAA Executive Director, Mike Colbrese, a commemorative WIAA State Athlete of the Week t-shirt, and a certificate. Winners are also posted to the WIAA website.

It was senior night as Shorewood's undefeated volleyball team took on Marysville-Getchell at Shorewood. Shorewood won the match 3 games to 0.

Shorewood volleyballers to play the Scots Wednesday after defeating MLT Tuesday

The 6th ranked Shorewood volleyball team puts its undefeated season on the line Wednesday night when they travel across to town face arch-rival Shorecrest at 7pm.

The T-Birds (5-0 in WESCO, 8-0 overall) are led by senior Delaney Hopen. The Scots (3-2, 3-4) will look to senior Bailey Rutter to pull off the upset.

Shorewood played Mountlake Terrace Tuesday, Oct 6. Final score SW 3 games MT 0.

Shoreline athletes named Northern Region VB All-Stars

SCC Sophomores Monica Postor and M’Kailah Redden have been named to the Northern Region All-Star volleyball team. The ladies represented the North over the weekend at the All-Star games during the NWAC’s Championship Sunday this past weekend.  The North split their matches, first losing to the East 25-18, 20-25, 15-6 before topping the West 20-25, 25-20, 15-4.

Postor finished the season with 166 digs and 13 service aces. “Monica is a great kid.  She’s dedicated and works hard.  Last season she played every position for us. This year she focused on the libero and outside hitter positions and has been a great asset for our team,” says Head Coach Raquel West.

Redden is part of a great blocking front with freshman Anya Golubitskikh. The pair combined for 26 solo and 27 assisted blocks over the season. Redden hit .243 over the season with 143 kills, averaging 2.80 kills a game. “M’Kailah is a quiet kid with a big heart. She’s a strong player who blocks well. She’s also incredibly smart with a 3.9 GPA,” shares West.

The Knights girls' volleyball team defeated Bear Creek and then Annie Wright to secure a spot in the Class 1A championship game as fourth seed in the State.

Shorewood to play host to District volleyball first-round matches Saturday afternoon

Shorewood will be the host team for two Northwest District 3A volleyball tournament first-round matches Saturday afternoon.

The top-seeded Thunderbirds take a 10-5 season record (10-2 Western Conference 3A) into a 5pm match with Glacier Peak. Ferndale and Oak Harbor meet in another first-round match at 2pm Saturday, also at Shorewood. The four teams return to Shorewood Monday for second-round matches.

The tournament includes the top seven Wesco 3A teams plus Ferndale of the Northwest 3A/2A/1A Conference. Ferndale qualified for the tournament because it had a better conference record than the No. 8 Wesco 3A team.

Four other terms play Saturday and Monday at another site. 

The tournament continues Nov. 6-8 in Marysville.

Shorewood volleyball hit its stride and earned a spot in the WesCo 3A district 1 tournament with its win over Glacier Peak on Tuesday at Shorewood High School. It was the team's eight's consecutive victory.

Week 3 defensive player of the week - SCC volleyball

SCC Sophomore Monica Poster has been named Week 3 Northern Region Defensive Player of the Week for NWAC Volleyball. The Lady Phins played 5 matches this week, going 1-4 in the jaunt.

Monica had 57 digs over the 5 contests, tallying 20 against Mt. Hood at the NWAC Crossover hosted by Everett. Her serve percentage sat at 90%, posting 2 matches with a perfect 100%.

Her serve reception numbers are the most impressive, with Monica seeing 93 serves come her way and handling them at 2.30 (out of 3.0) efficiency.

Raquel West, Shoreline’s co-head coach for 17 years, shares, “Monica … has really taken control of her team as a leader on and off the court. Her defense is unstoppable, and her serve receive has been on point this week.”

Monica is a 2013 graduate of Shorewood.
