Rob Caldwell to discuss military service and post military career at Post 227 meeting
Sunday, October 20, 2019
The American Legion Post 227 in Shoreline will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, November 5, 2019. A Meet and Greet starts at 6:30pm. The program starts at 7:00pm. Both Veterans and the public at large are invited and welcome to attend.
The meeting will be held at Post 227, located at 14521 17th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155. [Behind Goodwill @ NE 145th St and 15th Ave NE]
Rob Caldwell was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967 and trained as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division in North Carolina before serving as a light weapons infantry paratrooper with the 2nd Battalion 503rd Airborne Infantry of the 173rd Airborne Brigade (Separate) in Vietnam during a crucial time in the war.
After returning home he worked as a land surveyor for many years before attending college and gaining his doctorate in law as well as membership in the Washington Bar Association at the age of 49. He practiced environmental law for many years before retiring from full-time practice in 2012.
Upon his retirement he began assisting veterans with disability claims seeking compensation and medical benefits for their service-connected disabilities on a pro bono basis (free). His experience as a war veteran himself combined with his legal expertise in administrative law gives him unique experiences that he uses to assist veterans.

His practice includes a large number of appeals to the various appeal processes including the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veteran’s Claims in Washington DC. The largest majority of his clients are those that struggle with psychiatric disabilities such as PTSD, and he has achieved significant success on behalf of those clients. He is intensely involved with “The Joint Service Committee;” an all-volunteer group of veterans working to enhance the lives of veterans struggling with the long-term medical consequences of serving in the military.
A brief intermission for refreshments after the talk will allow visitors to depart. Post 227 members are urged to stay for the post meeting that will follow the intermission. We hope to see you at the meeting.

Multiple organizations receive money from local Buddy Poppy donations
Sunday, July 21, 2019
![]() |
| USO Northwest center at SeaTac |
By Carl "Chris" Christopherson
Having already delivered 25 Gift Cards ($50 each) to the 25 veterans who live in the Compass Veterans Center in Shoreline, (see previous article) the members decided to donate the remaining $6,750 to other organizations that serve veterans.
Some larger organizations regularly receive millions annually. Any donation we may make to them would only have the effect of a drop in the ocean, so we deliberately choose organizations where our donation will either make a difference or of whom we are particularly fond.
![]() |
| USO Northwest at SeaTac provides many services |
Those organizations that our members chose were
- VFW National Home for Children
- VFW Unmet Needs
- USO Northwest (SeaTac)
- Two VFW Department of Washington Funds
- Fisher House of Puget Sound
- WA Soldiers Home in Orting, WA
- Veterans Home in Port Orchard, WA
- U.S. Volunteers – Joint Service Command 103rd BCT
- Joint Service Committee
It would take pages to adequately describe these organizations. Here are some less verbose comments on a few of the organizations we did choose:
- $500 for USO Northwest @ SeaTac. VFW members who volunteer at USO tell of the need for small things e.g. coffee, sugar, etc. that they offer to Active Duty veterans and their families at SeaTac airport.
![]() |
| VFW National Home for Children in Michigan Washington VFW sponsors one of the houses |
- $500 for VFW National Home for Children. This is a 600-acre facility in Eaton Rapids, Michigan that has 42 single-family homes available only to military families. Each house has a sponsor. The VFW Department of Washington [State] sponsored one of those houses.
- There are four Veterans Homes in WA State --- two on the West Side and two on the East Side (Spokane and Walla Walla). We focus on the West Side:
- $1,500 for WA Soldiers Home (Orting, WA) --- $500 for their cemetery which we were told was a need. The remaining $1,000 was for the Home itself.
- $1,450 for Veterans Home (Port Orchard, WA) --- $600 for their cemetery which we were told was a need; $500 to “Building 9” which helps the homeless; $350 to their Nursing Home.
![]() |
| Families live at the VFW National Home for Children |
- $500 for Fisher House which is literally 50 yards away from the VA Hospital in Seattle. It houses family members of existing patients in the VA hospital who cannot otherwise afford to stay in a local hotel.
- $500 for the Joint Service Committee. These are local veterans who volunteer to help other veterans with their VA claims. They are led by an attorney who is a member of VFW Post 3348 and is VA certified. He understands what the VA looks for on VA Claims and is very effective in helping veterans with their VA Claims; he is breathtakingly effective at helping veterans with PTSD.

Where your Buddy Poppy donations went
Friday, June 28, 2019
Twice a year, Blackburn-Aurora VFW Post 3348 (Shoreline) holds their VFW Buddy Poppy (red poppies) fundraiser: Memorial Day and Veterans Day. We get permission to utilize three stores in the area on the Friday and Saturday prior to each of the above-named holidays.
| Veterans Tiffany Bothell and Ken Christophersen with Buddy Poppies at the Shoreline Fred Meyer Photo by Steven H. Robinson |
There are two or more VFW Post 3348 members at each store, taking donations for each VFW Buddy Poppy.
There is no set price --- it is whatever you choose to donate.
Every dime that is donated goes to help veterans in need.
We recently concluded our 2019 Memorial Day event.
We recently concluded our 2019 Memorial Day event.
Discussions about who to donate to are ongoing amongst the Post members.
We made one decision early on because donating to this facility is a perennial favorite --- our donation directly helps veterans.
We made one decision early on because donating to this facility is a perennial favorite --- our donation directly helps veterans.
That facility is the Shoreline Veterans Center (affiliated with the Compass Housing Alliance) located right across the street (N 200th St) from Costco in Shoreline.
They permanently house 25 veterans --- yet any veteran can leave when s/he feels prepared and ready to get their own place.
On Friday, June 28, 2019 we presented 25 gift cards ($50 each) to Shree Vigil, Program Manager, Compass Veterans Center – Shoreline.
On Friday, June 28, 2019 we presented 25 gift cards ($50 each) to Shree Vigil, Program Manager, Compass Veterans Center – Shoreline.
Each gift card is in an envelope along with a note from VFW Post 3348 for each veteran who resides there. The envelopes were numbered 1 – 25. The photo above shows Shree on the left and Jennifer Marquette on the right. I am in the middle. Jennifer is the Community Resource Coordinator, Compass Housing Alliance (CHA) --- she is based in their HQ in downtown Seattle but is often at the Shoreline facility. Each woman was given a box of chocolates.

There is at least one CHA employee on site 24/7. The male residents live in a separate area from the female residents.
No children are allowed but pets are allowed.
They each have their own room which is connected to the internet. Each room has a bed, nightstand, dresser, closet and desk and chair. The men and women each have their own shared bathroom/shower facilities.
To qualify to live there, each resident most make less than 30% of the median income in Greater Seattle. Right now, that 30% equates to $23,000. Most of the residents have jobs but do not make enough to have their own place, which is why a training facility with computers is in place. Most of them do not have cars.

| Bob Ferguson, right, was on the County Council in 2010 and gave Compass one of the surplused County vans. |
There is one van, given to them in 2010 by King County, to provide transportation but otherwise they use public buses to get to the VA hospital or wherever. If they have income, they pay 33% of their Net.
There is a common kitchen area. The residents are not provided meals but Shree cooks one meal for them each week; another woman comes once a week and makes another meal for them; yet another patriot drops off a large donation of food once a week.
So nobody goes hungry. One resident “Dave” said that he uses the $50 for whatever he happens to need at the time e.g. socks, underwear, food, clothes, etc.
Shree told us about one female veteran who showed up, whose apartment had just burnt down. The woman had lost everything --- she came with just the clothes she was wearing. After our prior visit (following our 2018 Veterans Day Buddy Poppy event), Shree had handed this woman a $50 gift card --- the woman teared up (she had not yet thought about what she needed to do) --- her eyes opened wide and she said “oh my, thank you. I have nothing.” It helped a little right then.
The story repeats from each veteran.

In response to the letter regarding the POW/MIA flag, the City of Shoreline follows a schedule for flag displays.
For most of the year, the City only flies two flags – the United States flag and the Washington State flag.
On the dates below, the City flies the National League of Families POW/MIA flag:
This year, on June 12, the City raised the rainbow flag in recognition of Pride Month.
On July 1, the City will once again fly the Washington State Flag and on July 4 it will raise the POW/MIA flag.
The flagpole was originally closer to City Hall. When the City provided space for the veterans' memorial, the flagpole was moved to the center of the memorial.

On Wednesday, June 5, 2019 the King County Council held a D-Day Anniversary Observance with Dwight Stevens, WWII B-17 pilot as their honored guest.
On June 6, the world commemorated the 75th Anniversary of the Allied invasion of Europe, better known as D-Day. The men of the “Greatest Generation” stormed the beaches of Normandy, playing a decisive role in turning the tide of World War II.
Councilmembers recognized those soldiers and their role in bringing an end to the global conflict.

From a speech by Dick Deal Veterans Day 2013
...Dwight was then flown to Prestwick, Scotland in a C-54 Transport plane, arriving June 7, 1944, the day after the D-Day invasion began in France. He was assigned to the 95th Heavy Bombardment Group stationed at Horham, Suffolk, England, 60 miles north of London.
In the next six months, as a B-17 pilot, Dwight flew 33 combat missions over Nazi-occupied Europe and participated in air raid missions over heavily-defended German targets such as Hamburg, Munich, and Berlin as well as other targets in Belgium, France, Poland and Romania.
During what he described as the “toughest” mission, on an air raid over Hamburg, Germany, the B-17 bomber he was piloting lost both left-side engines to heavy German anti-aircraft fire over the target. To lighten the damaged, struggling plane and improve its airworthiness and chances for making it back to Horham, the crew dropped the plane’s 2,000 lb. ball-turret and threw all machine guns, ammunition, and non-essential gear overboard. With the help of a protective escort of P-47 fighter planes, they “just made it back” to land at home base at Horham, England.
On the last five of his 33 air missions, our honoree and his crew were chosen as the Lead Plane, guiding 1500 airplanes to their intended targets. For his effort, skill and courage on these five missions, Dwight was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross ( DFC ), the highest award a flying officer can earn. He was also awarded the European Theater of Operations Ribbon with three stars, plus four Air Medals. In a ceremony held in New York on September 18, 1994, 50 years to the day after participating in a low-altitude raid in support of the Polish Military at the Warsaw Uprising, Dwight was awarded the Polish Home Army Medal personally, by the President of Poland, Lech Walesa.
Our honoree was promoted to the rank of 1st Lt. in September 1944, and flew his last combat mission on December 14th of that year. He spent the last six months of his military service as a flight instructor at Luke Field in Arizona. He was discharged from the Army Air Corps at Fort Lewis, Washington on August 1, 1945.

...Dwight was then flown to Prestwick, Scotland in a C-54 Transport plane, arriving June 7, 1944, the day after the D-Day invasion began in France.
By June 6, 1944, Westlake found himself on a ship off the coast of Normandy, France -- D-Day. Westlake would hit the beach two days later.
"There were boats as far as you could see," Westlake said. "But I didn't really have to dodge anything -- I'm a survivor."
Even two days later, Flint was quick to point out, Omaha Beach was still taking fire from German forces.
Westlake spent the next year "chasing the Germans" through France and Belgium until the Germans finally surrendered May 7, 1945.
Westlake returned to the United States, but instead of getting out of the military, he joined the Army Reserve and retired as a colonel in 1975.
He was a civil affairs commander at Fort Lawton - now Discovery Park - in Seattle. Today, he lives in the Wedgwood area of Seattle.
During the ceremonies Shorecrest graduate Maria Kesovija sang the National Anthem. A wreath was placed in honor of the servicemen and women who gave their lives in service to America.
The keynote address was given by Dr. Samantha Powers, Director of Student Veteran Life, University of Washington.
After the ceremonies, visitors to the Memorial Day Celebration joined a tour and visited the graves of Medal of Honor winners, such as William C. Horton, one of Seven Medal of Honor recipients interred at Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery in Seattle.
