REAL ID WA requiring specific ID to take flights goes into effect May 7, 2025

Sunday, August 4, 2024

REAL ID WA 2025 – Beginning May 7, 2025, there will be new ID requirements for flying (for those age 18 and older).

What is REAL ID?

REAL ID is a federal law, not an actual piece of ID.

The REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver licenses and ID cards. Starting May 7, 2025, anyone traveling by airplane or visiting certain federal facilities must use a REAL ID-compliant document.

You may already have what you need

These identification options meet REAL ID standards and can be used to board domestic flights:
Standard driver licenses and ID cards

Yes, we'll continue to offer standard driver licenses and ID cards that can be used by Washington residents to drive or as identification. They don't indicate a person's residency or legal status and starting May 7, 2025, they will no longer be accepted as valid forms of ID for boarding domestic flights.

Enhanced driver license (EDL) and enhanced identification (EID)

An EDL or EID is a form of identification with enhanced security features that shows proof of identity and proof of citizenship. An EDL/EID meets federal requirements under REAL ID and is an approved alternative to a passport or passport card for re-entry into the U.S. at land and sea borders between the United States, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

Who can get an EDL or EID?

You must be a U.S. citizen and provide a Social Security number, proof of citizenship, proof of identity, and proof of Washington State residency.

Do I have to get an EDL or EID?

If you don't plan to fly domestically, or already have acceptable identity documents, you may not need an EDL or EID. The standard license will continue to permit you to drive and your standard ID will continue to serve as a valid form of identification within the state.

Washington’s EDL/EID doesn’t have a star marking. Will it be accepted?

The enhanced driver license/ID is Washington’s REAL ID-compliant form of identification. Many other states have chosen to offer a REAL ID card with a star marking. The EDL/EID bears a U.S. flag marking instead of a star. For domestic air travel, the EDL/EID and REAL ID card are equally acceptable.

Driver licenses and ID cards that don't comply with REAL ID

A standard Washington driver license or ID card does not meet the federal requirements to be a REAL ID-approved document. We started marking standard driver licenses and ID cards with "Federal limits Apply" in July 2018 to show this.

Scene on the Sound: Shortage in the System

Monday, July 1, 2024

Jan comments: It is a beautiful time of year, and many are using our ferry systems. The Washington State Ferries are short vessels and crew. Some of the scheduled runs are being cancelled, so travelers need to do check ahead and plan.

WSDOT details: We’re expecting about 700,000 people to ride our ferries from Friday, June 28, through Sunday, July 7, 2024.

To help navigate this July Fourth travel rush, customers are encouraged to download and use the WSDOT mobile app

The app and our website allow visitors to see sailing schedules, view live terminal conditions and traffic cameras, check for rider alerts that provide service updates by route, monitor a real-time map for the location of each operating vessel and make vehicle reservations for our Anacortes/San Juan Islands or Port Townsend/Coupeville runs.

We run a complex operation of roughly 400 daily sailings. Our online tools let customers take control of their ferry travel to help plan a trip and know what to expect before they get in a ferry waiting line.

We've got holiday weekend travel ahead with sporting events, concerts and festivals happening across Washington and the Puget Sound region. Plan ahead, be patient, pack snacks and give yourself some extra time to get where you're going.

And while most construction projects will be paused for the holiday weekend, we have several long-term work zones you’ll need to be ready for, so please slow down and use caution.

If you plan to be on Interstate 5, I-90, US 2 this weekend, expect congestion and more traffic than usual. State ferries also will be busier than normal. You can check our rider alerts to get the latest details.

Make your next vacation an adventure

Monday, October 23, 2023

By Michelle Glass; Vice President of Travel Services at AAA Washington

Does your bucket list include travel? Chances are, there’s an adventure travel experience on your list. You just might not know it.

From cooking classes in Sri Lanka to guided walks through the markets of Morocco, adventure travel tours take many forms. This is a different way of thinking about travel—a new way to connect with people, places and cultures.

Adventure travel tours emphasize small groups plus hands-on cultural experiences. There’s a wide range of activity levels and an even more comprehensive range of activities. It’s an authentic way to live like a local, actively engage with the communities you visit and get off the beaten path.

There are so many reasons to add adventure travel to your bucket list:Adventure travel is for everyone. Think adventure travel is only for athletes? Think again. Adventure travel is for everyone. People of all ages, fitness levels, and families with kids will find great options. Each tour is designed with an activity level in mind.
  • Adventure travel supports local businesses, producers and artists. If you have a passion for supporting local businesses, adventure travel is a must. Itineraries emphasize connecting with artisans and makers, shopping local, eating at family-owned restaurants and meeting the people who call the community home. Local experts and guides will accompany you on your tour, offering fresh perspectives on food, culture and much more.
  • Adventure tours are great for solo travelers. Tours are a great option for solo travelers who don’t necessarily want to go it alone. You’ll be part of a micro-community of adventurers who share a passion for the destination and trying new things. You’ll also have time to explore on your own. A big plus is that you’ll travel with local guides who can offer expert tips for each step of the tour, making solo travel a breeze.
  • Adventure travel is great for foodies. If you have a passion for cooking, adventure travel is for you. On a foodie adventure tour, you can take a deep dive into a region’s culinary delights with a side order of storytelling and family recipes. Learn to cook from local chefs, meet farmers and producers, and challenge yourself with new cooking methods. There are so many foodie destinations, including Spain, South Korea, Thailand, Israel, India, Turkey, Vietnam, Cambodia, Morocco, Portugal, Greece, Jordan, Italy, The Balkans, and Armenia. As the saying goes, the world is your oyster (and you can enjoy some on an adventure travel tour).
  • Adventure travel tours can be close to home. Some of the most beautiful and inspiring adventure travel destinations are right here in the U.S.A. You’ll find tours in every corner of the country. Imagine hiking Utah’s Coyote Gulch, snowshoeing in Yosemite, learning about Georgia’s Gullah Geechee heritage, or exploring Olympic National Park. No matter where you point your compass, you’ll find an adventure travel experience.
Adventure travel is calling.

Inspired? There’s still time to book an adventure travel tour this fall or winter. Visit Cairo, Luxor, Petra and Amman on an Egypt and Jordan discovery trip; join a women’s expedition in Nepal; experience cliffside villages, sunshine, clear waters and delicious seafood on a Sicilian adventure; or take a deep dive into the sacred heart of Australia’s Red Centre on the Uluru and Kings Canyon adventure. These tours are just a sampling of where you can go with adventure tours.

Ready to travel?

Check out Club Adventures by AAA for experiences in every corner of the world, then connect with a AAA Travel advisor to plan what promises to be an epic vacation

Planning to travel out of the country? There's a major backlog in the passport system

Friday, May 5, 2023

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal recently sent out current information on the passport system:

There’s been a major backlog in the passport system – which I know is a big headache if you’re travelling in the near future.

Today, I’m writing with some information on the process for renewal and who you can contact to speed up that process if need be.

Current estimates suggest that processing times for passport renewal may be up to 13 weeks.

For general info on forms, costs, and processing times, visit the State Department's website. And to check the current status of your passport application, click here.

To contact the National Passport Information Center, call 1-877-487-2778 on Monday through Fridays from 5:00am to 7:00pm Pacific Time, or on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00am to 12:00pm Pacific Time. The call center is closed on federal holidays.

The State Department prioritizes customers who are traveling internationally in the next 3 business days due to a qualified life-or-death emergency. What number you call to make an appointment depends on the day of the week and time of day. Learn more at their Life-or-Death Emergency page.

You can also schedule an appointment for urgent travel service if you are traveling internationally within the next 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. To do this, contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778.

Find your nearest Passport Acceptance Facility here.

Please make sure to check when your current passport expires and always leave yourself and your application extra time in case of delays. And as always, if you need assistance with these processes, please reach out to my office. We’re here to help.

Trip #1:  Magical Christmas Markets of Austria and Germany.
Date: December 2nd – 9th, 2023

Join the Shoreline - LFP Senior Activity Center on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 1pm for an exciting look at some of our upcoming travel excursions.

Enjoy a slide show and question/answer period, regarding two new travel tours offered through the senior center in partnership with Collette Travel:
  • Magical Christmas Markets of Austria and Germany
  • Memorials of World War II of England and France on the 80th Anniversary of D-Day!
Our tour coordinator, Toni, will also provide tips on how to safely travel abroad and responsibly on a budget, plus receive pointers on packing, passport needs and learn what your accommodations will be during the trip.

Toni will also share with you, what our criteria is that we use to help you pair up with a new travel partner, to receive reduced rates. We help all travelers understand that sharing accommodations does not restrict you to spending your daytime with your roommate, only sleeping quarters and that you are able to spend your days with additional new friends you meet on the journey.

If you prefer to travel alone, we have the right plan for you as well. During the presentation, we will also go over payment guidelines.

Worried about transportation to the airport? No worries, as you will be picked up from the senior center as well as dropped off at the center. No one should have to miss a great vacation should there be a very early morning departure times from the center. We can be of help!

We have over 15 trips scheduled in the next eight months, so do not delay as seating is limited on all packages.

Amtrak Cascades service fully restored between BC and Portland

Tuesday, March 7, 2023

WASHINGTON – Amtrak, in collaboration with ODOT, WSDOT and other agencies resumed Cascades service between Portland, OR and Vancouver, BC on March 6, 2023.

Today’s announcement marks the first time direct service will operate between Portland and stations north of Seattle since 2020.

Serving 12 stations along the I-5 corridor in western Washington, including Edmonds, customers traveling north can depart downtown Seattle at 7pm — for an 11pm arrival in Vancouver, BC.

The southbound train leaves Vancouver, BC at 6:35am for an 11am stop in downtown Seattle and a 2:55pm Portland arrival.

“With more people now traveling, we are thrilled to double the daily round trips between Seattle and Vancouver, BC. By adding staffing and equipment to the region, we can once again offer customers a direct connection between Portland and Canada,” said Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner.

Running along the water from British Columbia, through river and mountain vistas in Washington and Oregon, Amtrak Cascades offers views of some of the country’s most distinctive cities and spectacular natural attractions.

Amtrak Cascades restarted daily service to Canada, between Seattle and Vancouver, BC, in September 2022. Now fully restored on the popular Pacific Northwest route, Amtrak Cascades offers a cafe car, which features products grown and made in the Pacific Northwest on its Bistro Menu.

Travelers also can enjoy large spacious seats with ample leg room, no middle seat and one of the most generous baggage policies in the travel industry, applicable for two personal items and two carry-on bags.

Customers can visit Amtrak.com, AmtrakCascades.com, the Amtrak app, Amtrak ticket desks and kiosks and call 1-800-USA-RAIL for tickets.

Travelers departing from Canada can also book their tickets at ViaRail.ca and through 1-888-VIA-RAIL.

The United States and Canadian governments have specific requirements for travel between the two countries. Those who fail to meet these criteria will not be allowed to cross the border.

Beginning May 3, 2023 air travelers will need REAL ID

Monday, October 10, 2022

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Homeland Security extended the enforcement deadline for air travelers to have REAL ID.

Beginning May 3, 2023, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another acceptable form of ID, like a US passport, to fly within the United States.

A standard Washington state driver’s license or ID card will no longer be sufficient identification.

Washington state issues enhanced driver’s licenses which are compliant. Information here about obtaining an enhanced license: https://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/edl.html

Read more about REAL ID and your options here: https://www.tsa.gov/real-id

Passport processing times are currently 7-10 weeks for routine processing and 4-6 weeks for expedited processing (additional fee) and we are booking appointments two months in advance.
