Sound Transit hosting online open house and in-person drop in sessions about Stride 3 bus rapid transit (BRT)

Wednesday, March 1, 2023

Proposed bus stop design for Stride 3 on Bothell Way

Sound Transit has launched an online open house for the Stride bus rapid transit (BRT) project through April 8, 2023 at https://stridebrt.participate.online

The public can learn more about the latest design for the project and provide comment through an online survey. In addition to English, the online open house is available in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese.

Sound Transit will also be hosting the following public meeting drop-in sessions for the public to learn more about the design, ask questions and share thoughts on future construction.

March 15: Lake Forest Park
Brookside Elementary School
17447 37th Ave NE

3pm – 7pm

March 22: Shoreline/Seattle
Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church
14724 1st Ave NE

3pm – 7pm

March 28: Kenmore
Kenmore City Hall
18120 68th Ave NE

4pm – 8pm

The Stride program is now at 60% design. The 30% design phase was completed in 2021 and 2022. At final design, the plans are finalized and made ready for construction.  Sound Transit anticipates starting construction in 2024-2025 and starting service on some lines as early as 2026-2027.

With buses running as often as every 10 minutes, Stride will be a fast, frequent, and reliable bus service connecting to light rail and to communities north, east, and south of Lake Washington. Similar to light rail service, Stride is designed for convenient travel with fast arrivals and departures, including off-board fare payment and multiple-door entry and exit. New bus lanes and transit priority improvements will help riders avoid traffic.

The Stride bus fleet will include battery electric buses (BEBs) for a cleaner, more sustainable way to travel in the region.

Getting to a Sound Transit station by bus

Tuesday, January 17, 2023

By Diane Hettrick

The Lynnwood Link will start running in 2024. We have stations at NE 148th, NE 185th, and Mountlake Terrace.

How will you get to a station to catch one of those trains?

Many people will be able to walk. Some might drive but I promise you that the parking will be inadequate and expensive.

How about the bus?

Metro did a survey last year to find out what we need to get to transit stations. They heard what we said: there are no east west routes and it is hazardous and difficult to get to existing bus stops.

They have designed routes to correct that, as much as possible, and they want to know what we think.

Take a look at the map and see if Metro can get you to a transit station. I was delighted to see an easy route for me to the Mountlake Terrace station - not what I was expecting. However, I'm not sure I can get home from there.

And I'm not looking forward to my neighborhood being parked solid with commuters.

If you can get to Richmond Beach Road / 185th, you have a straight shot to the 185th station.

Kenmore and Lake Forest Park are also pointed at the Mountlake Terrace station, if they can get to Ballinger Way.

So check it out and make your suggestions to Metro and maybe we will end up with something we can use.

Dec. 23 7:30am: All Metro service suspended due to ice

Friday, December 23, 2022

From King County Metro Matters blog

As first shared on Dec. 23 at 5am, King County Metro’s buses are unable to leave bus bases due to deteriorating and unsafe road conditions.

We regret the impact on our riders. We continue to reassess and will provide the next update at 10am.

We remain optimistic that we will be able to provide service later today.

Since Metro communicated yesterday its move to the Emergency Snow Network (ESN), fast-accumulating ice and sub-freezing temperatures across King County have worsened and make it impossible for any buses to travel at the present time.

We will add bus service as soon as it is safe for customers and employees.

Other service updates for Fri., Dec. 23
  • Access paratransit is suspended today other than for than life-sustaining medical needs. Providers are assessing conditions and icy roads may interfere with additional trips.
  • City of Seattle Streetcar is currently suspended on both the First Hill and South Lake Union lines.
  • King County Water Taxi’s morning trips today on both the Vashon and West Seattle routes are canceled.
  • On-demand services including Community Ride, Community Van, Ride Pingo and Via to Transit are suspended today.
  • Sound Transit Link light rail is currently operating.

The National Weather Service Seattle recommends staying indoors and not driving if you can. Cold weather shelter locations are available through the King County Regional Homelessness Authority.

Thank you for your understanding. Please stay safe and warm. Our crews continue to work throughout the night and the morning to ensure safe operating conditions for our vehicles, and access to bases, bus stops and transit centers.

Stride 3 bus rapid transit line to open in 2026

BRT - Bus Rapid Transit
BAT - Business Access and Transit lane
SR-523 is NE 145th
SR-522 is Bothell Way
Stride is the name of the Sound Transit express bus lines; ours is Stride 3
S3 - Stride 3

The Sound Transit Board has selected the route, station locations and roadway improvements for Stride bus rapid transit on I-405 and SR-522/NE 145th. Stride BRT lines are scheduled to open in 2026 and 2027.

Stride BRT will include three lines:
  • S1 – 1-405 South from Burien to Bellevue, service scheduled to begin in 2026
  • S2 – I-405 North from Bellevue to Lynnwood, service scheduled to begin in 2027
  • S3 – SR 522/145th from Shoreline to Bothell (S3), service scheduled to begin in 2026

“Stride BRT will not only improve transit commutes for many thousands of riders on the I-405 and SR 522 corridors, but connect seamlessly to Link light rail at four separate stations and to local bus services,” said Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff.

“Our work to expedite these improvements will include close collaboration with WSDOT, our regional transit partners and the many cities along the Stride routes.”

SR 522/NE 145th BRT

The Stride S3 line will operate along a nine-mile corridor between the Shoreline South/148th Link light rail station and the SR 522/I-405 Transit Hub, with separate connecting service options to Woodinville.

Buses will use Business Access and Transit (BAT) lanes on SR 522, and BAT lanes, general purpose lanes and bus queue bypass lanes on SR 523/NE 145th Street.

There will be 12 stations across five cities, including:
  • NE 145th Street at 15th Avenue NE
  • NE 145th Street at 30th Avenue NE
  • SR 522 at NE 153rd Street
  • SR 522 at NE 165th Street
  • SR 522 at Ballinger Way
  • SR 522 at 61st Avenue NE
  • SR 522 at 68th Avenue NE
  • SR 522 at 73rd Avenue NE/Kenmore Park and Ride
  • 98th Avenue NE at NE 182nd Street
  • NE 185th Street at 104th Avenue NE
  • Beardslee Boulevard at University of Washington Bothell/Cascadia College
  • Beardslee Boulevard at NE 195th Street

Roadway improvements, including sidewalk improvements where roadways are widened will be made in Shoreline/Seattle, Lake Forest Park and Bothell.

In order to focus available financial capacity on expediting the opening of the new Stride lines, three planned park-and-ride facilities are scheduled to be opened later:

  • New parking at the Lake Forest Park Town Center – scheduled for 2044
  • Additional parking at the Kenmore Park-and-Ride lot, potentially delivered by King County Metro – scheduled for 2034
  • New parking in downtown Bothell – scheduled for 2034

Find details for both BRT projects at I-405 BRT | Project map and summary | Sound Transit and SR 522/NE 145th BRT | Project map and summary | Sound Transit.

Both projects are approaching 30% design. Construction of some elements of the project have already begun.

The Sound Transit Board selected the Bus Rapid Transit Maintenance base project to be built in August 2021. The facility will be located in Bothell on the east side of 20th Ave SE just south of 214th St SE in the Canyon Park business park.

Cities of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, and Bothell say "Help Save Bus Rapid Transit Along SR 522!"

Friday, July 16, 2021

In an unprecedented joint campaign, the cities of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, and Bothell are together urging their citizens to lobby Sound Transit to save the much touted Bus Rapid Transit service along Bothell Way (SR 522) to the 148th Transit station.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Systemwide, Sound Transit is seeing lower revenues than projected and higher costs than anticipated (mostly due to the pandemic). The Sound Transit Board and staff are going through a “realignment” process, meaning that they are looking to significantly delay some of the ST3 projects.

Our 522 BRT (bus rapid transit) project could be one of the projects to be delayed to 2030 or beyond! That’s where you can help.

The Sound Transit Board has not yet made a decision, but their discussions are ramping up. The preliminary recommendation is to have 522 BRT included in Tier 1, the category with the shortest delay.

We need citizens to remind the Sound Transit Board all of the reasons why this BRT project must stay funded and stay in Tier 1 planning!

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Before the July 22 meeting, write a letter to the Sound Transit Board urging them to keep 522 BRT on schedule and in Tier 1. You can send it to the board at emailtheboard@soundtransit.org.

Attend the July 22, 2021 Sound Transit Board meeting at 1:30pm via Zoom. Sign up for public comment and state your support for 522 BRT. Find meeting information here.

The attached flyer has additional information and can give you some talking points in making the case for 522 BRT.

IT'S EASY TO ADVOCATE!

The cities of Bothell, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park and Shoreline are seeking interested community members to form a coalition of citizens and business leaders advocating for the timely delivery of the Sound Transit SR 522/NE145th Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.

Joining the coalition and advocating for this project will require a small time commitment with simple ways to show your support, such as signing letters or attending meetings.

Sound Transit May update: SR 522 / NE 145th Bus Rapid Transit

Saturday, May 29, 2021

Since the start of the year, our Sound Transit team has been busy delivering our online open house and virtual city public meetings.

Below you will find an update on our recent and upcoming activities.
  • The project team completed the environmental review process this spring. The public comment period is now closed (it ran from March 25 to April 8, 2021). More information about the environmental review is available online.
  • Later in 2021, we anticipate the Sound Transit Board of Directors to consider action to identify the project to be built, which may enable the project to advance into the design and construction phases.
    • This means that we also now anticipate starting the property acquisition process later this year.
    • The project schedule is subject to change due to impacts from the COVID-19 recession and the ongoing Sound Transit Board realignment process.
    • In the upcoming design phase, the project team will:
      • Finalize the design of roadway and sidewalks.
      • Finalize station design and public art.
      • Advance the Park-and-Ride garages to a more detailed level of design.
      • Obtain land use, environmental and construction permits.
      • Begin the property acquisition process.
      • Continue engaging with and providing feedback opportunities for the public, community groups, businesses, elected officials and partner agencies to comment on and inform the design.
COVID-19 impacts to Sound Transit projects: Revenue reductions caused by the COVID-19 recession combined with rising cost estimates will affect plans and timelines for Sound Transit expansion projects.

City of Shoreline urges citizens to take the Sound Transit Realignment survey to preserve bus service to Shoreline South station

      Monday, April 19, 2021

This? or 70 cars on the roads
Sound Transit is making some important decisions about the future of its regional transit system that could impact our community, and they need to hear from you!

Rising real estate and construction costs have created major challenges for completing some voter-approved transit projects on their original schedules.

According to Sound Transit, “Before we consider delaying, phasing or modifying future transit projects, we want to hear what’s important to you.”

Sound Transit is providing an opportunity to weigh in through a community survey

Of particular interest to Shoreline is Sound Transit’s Bus Rapid Transit project, or Stride 522, which runs along Bothell Way and 145th and connects Bothell, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, and Shoreline to the new Shoreline South/148th Street light rail station.

This service will make it easier for our neighboring city residents to catch a bus to light rail, instead of driving to the Shoreline South Station.

Let the Sound Transit Board know that Stride 522 should not be delayed as part of their decision making. Stride 522 will be one of the few high frequency east-west routes in the north end, is a low cost and efficient way to move people quickly (22 minutes between Shoreline South station and Bothell), and needs get up and running as soon as possible so it can connect our community to the new light rail system.

Through April 30, community members can provide input on realignment through several options:
      • Visit an online open house and complete the short survey by April 30. Information and surveys are available in English, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Tagalog and Vietnamese.
      • Email realignment@soundtransit.org.
      • Leave a voicemail at 206-553-3400.

The agency will compile and present input to the Sound Transit Board in May in advance of upcoming realignment discussions.

Bus rapid transit (BRT) project issues Determination of Nonsignificance (DNS)

      Saturday, March 27, 2021

      Graphic courtesy Sound Transit

Sound Transit is planning to implement bus rapid transit (BRT) service along SR 522 and NE 145th Street. This service will operate between the Shoreline South/148th Station and a new transit hub at the SR 522/I-405 interchange in Bothell.

Sound Transit plans 13 BRT transit stations along the nine-mile STRIDE service route, together with three park-and-ride garages (Bothell, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park).

To facilitate bus speed and reliability, the project would construct road improvements, including new business access and transit (BAT) lanes, bus-only lanes, and bus queue bypass lanes, at various locations along approximately four miles of the corridor.

In addition, the project would construct/reconstruct sidewalks and driveways in some locations, and would include stormwater infrastructure and landscaping.

      Learn more

In the latest update, Sound Transit has prepared a State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) environmental checklist for the BRT project. Along with the environmental checklist, Sound Transit developed conceptual plans and technical reports on the following:
      • Noise and Vibration
      • Ecosystem Resources
      • Air Quality
      • Transportation
      • Visual and Aesthetic Resources
      • Historic and Cultural Preservation
Sound Transit issued a Determination of Nonsignificance (DNS) for the SR 522/NE 145th BRT project on March 25, 2021.

Based on the checklist, technical reports and other information, Sound Transit has determined the project does not have a probable significant adverse impact on the environment.

Comments on the DNS must be submitted by 5:00pm on April 8, 2021. The environmental analysis will inform the Sound Transit Board on future decisions about the project.

For additional information on how to submit comments, see the DNS posted on the Sound Transit SR 522/NE 145th BRT Documents page.

Still in the design phase, construction is planned for 2023-2024 with opening in 2024.

The meetings will have Spanish and Mandarin spoken interpretation, ASL interpretation and English closed captioning. The recorded presentation from the meetings will be available on the online open house.

      Project overview

Sound Transit’s Stride BRT program will provide fast, frequent and reliable high-capacity transit service. The Stride S3 Line will connect north Lake Washington communities to the regional transit system. Riders will be able to transfer between the Stride S3 Line, I-405 North Stride S2 Line, Link light rail and other transit service provided by Community Transit, King County Metro and Sound Transit.

Updates to NE 145th in Shoreline/Seattle
      • Sound Transit is proposing to move the Stride BRT station in Seattle/Shoreline, planned for the intersection of NE 145th Street and SR 522, west to 30th Avenue NE on NE 145th Street to improve pedestrian access and safety.
      • The project team is proposing to not include the Stride BRT station at 25th Avenue NE in Shoreline/Seattle. The stop will continue to be served by King Count Metro, providing frequent service to the future Shoreline South/148th light rail station.
      • The design reduces the length of needed roadway widening on the north side of NE 145th Street between 15th Avenue NE and 5th Avenue NE (see the City of Shoreline’s related NE 145th Street and I-5 Interchange Project). The project does not include widening the roadway at NE 145th Street and 25th Avenue NE.
      • Sound Transit is proposing transit priority lane reconfigurations between 30th Avenue NE and SR 522 on NE 145th Street, rather than adding an eastbound lane, to improve the environment for pedestrians and transit riders using the planned BRT station at this location.

      Updates in Lake Forest Park
      • Sound Transit is proposing Stride BRT stations on SR 522 at NE 153rd Street, NE 165th Street and Ballinger Way NE (at the Lake Forest Park Town Center).
      • The project also includes additional parking at the Lake Forest Park Town Center; the project team has developed an early design concept for a new Park-and-Ride garage adjacent to City Hall.
      • Sound Transit has refined the design between NE 155th Street and half a block south of 41st Avenue NE in Lake Forest Park, shifting some roadway widening to the west side of SR 522 to reduce property impacts. The project team has reached out to property owners on both sides of the roadway to discuss what this means for potential impacts to their properties.

The online open house at sr522brt.participate.online has additional details on these and other updates, an interactive map, information about station design, project background and opportunities for input.

      Next steps for the project

After completing the environmental review process later this spring, the project team will ask the Sound Transit Board to identify the project to be built, which may enable the project to advance into the design and construction phases. The project schedule is subject to change due to impacts from the recession caused by COVID-19 and the ongoing Sound Transit Board Realignment process.

On Thursday, September 3 and Friday, September 4, 2020 from 7:30am until 4:00pm each day, Metro Route 331 will be rerouted off a portion of northbound Dayton Ave N and NW Richmond Beach Rd, due to construction near N 185th St.

During these times, Route 331 heading toward the Kenmore Park and Ride will travel instead via N 185th St, 3rd Ave NW and then on to its regular route. Riders may board or exit at the regular stops on Dayton Ave N south of N 185th St or on 3rd Ave NW north of NW Richmond Beach Rd.

Heading toward Shoreline Community College, Route 331 is not affected and all regular stops are served.

Visit Metro’s Service Advisories page for information about revised bus service, routing and stops for planned construction or events. Transit reroute start and end times may be subject to change.

Reminder – North King County Mobility Coalition Community Survey closes August 15

      Saturday, August 1, 2020

      Metro transit

If you are a resident of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, Woodinville, or Seattle north of the ship canal, you are encouraged to take this survey by August 15, 2020.

The North King County Mobility Coalition (NKCMC) is working with transportation agencies, community-based organizations, cities and residents to examine the factors that impact the use of public transit and community operated transportation options in the North King County region.

The project, known as the North King County Gaps Analysis, will draw on several sources to inform the report.

One element is a community survey, which has been distributed to many NKCMC partners in the northern region.

If you are a resident of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, Woodinville, or Seattle north of the ship canal, you are encouraged to take the survey by August 15. It only takes about 5-10 minutes, responses are anonymous, and, if you wish, you can enter your name in a raffle for a gift card!

Check out the survey, currently available in English and Spanish.

If you have questions about the survey or North King County Gaps Analysis project, please contact Maggie Harger at mharger@hopelink.org
