Opportunities for public to help update the Highway System Plan

Sunday, March 27, 2022

Primary state highways in Washington
Online open house, virtual public meetings coming statewide

Olympia – The approach of spring brings a new opportunity for the public to help grow and improve the state’s Highway System Plan

The Washington State Department of Transportation is hosting an online open house to gather public input on future highway system investments for the update to the plan.

The opinion poll linked in the online open house asks people to weigh-in on highway investment priorities, such as maintenance, operations, walking and bicycling.

WSDOT is also hosting seven regionally focused virtual public meetings in late March and April to discuss the Highway System Plan and answer questions.

The plan, last updated in 2007, creates a 20-year vision for preserving, maintaining, improving and operating state highways.

This long-term outlook is shaped by the diversity of the people who live in Washington, which helps ensure the highway system meet the needs of people who use transit, vanpools and vehicles; people who walk, ride bikes and use wheelchairs, and people who transport goods and services around the state.

The update will address major challenges, including aging infrastructure and climate change.

Highway System Plan online open house information
Details: Participants will learn about the Highway System Plan and can use the opinion poll to share their preferences on future highway system investments. The poll is hosted by the University of Washington.

Virtual public meeting information
  • When: March 29 - April 14
  • Where: Zoom (virtual)
Details: The public can sign up for a virtual public meeting through the online open house to learn more about the highway plan. Each of the seven meetings focuses on a specific region of Washington, however anyone can participate in any meeting.

More closures for the Montlake Bridge

Wednesday, January 19, 2022

The Montlake Bridge photo courtesy WSDOT

Rehabilitation of the
 State Route 513

Montlake Bridge is nearly complete, but contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation require two more weekend closures as part of the project.

The bridge will close to all vehicle traffic from 10pm Friday, January 21, 2022 to 5am Monday, Jan. 24. Access for pedestrians and boat traffic in the Montlake Cut will be affected:

  • The bridge sidewalks will be closed for the weekend. A shuttle service will transport pedestrians and bicyclists from one side of the bridge to the other using a detour route. The shuttle stop on the north end will be near the bus stop on eastbound Northeast Pacific Street just west of Montlake Boulevard. The stop on the southern end will be on southbound Montlake Boulevard just south of Shelby Street.
  • Boats will be able to access the Montlake Cut below the bridge using single-leaf openings. Double-leaf openings require 24-hour notice to the bridge operator: (206) 720-3048.

Over the summer and during a series of closures this fall, Hamilton Construction Co. crews replaced the bridge's metal deck, added new support beams and refurbished mechanical components. The bridge now needs to be rebalanced to account for the weight of the new deck and mechanical parts.

Crews will return to the bridge in the spring to repave the bridge approaches. The pavement on each end was removed and repaved with fresh asphalt over the summer, but the work did not meet WSDOT standards. Removing the existing asphalt and repaving will keep the bridge approaches from cracking or forming potholes prematurely.

Shoreline Schools on 2 hour delay Tuesday

Tuesday, January 4, 2022

Shoreline Schools has announced a two hour delay for Tuesday, January 4, 2022.

Due to the continued impacts of recent snow and ice, all Shoreline Schools will be on a TWO-HOUR DELAY Tuesday, January 4.

While arterial streets are passable, there are many streets and sidewalks throughout the district that are not.

Road conditions will be reassessed early tomorrow morning. If a closure is required, an additional announcement will be made by 6:00am.

So it isn't about what you can see out the window or your trip to the grocery store. It's about whether a school bus full of children can safely travel the icy hills of Lake Forest Park and Richmond Beach as well as the other unplowed narrow, residential streets in Shoreline.

The temperatures stayed above freezing Monday and there was a fair amount of melting. The weather has been so crazy that there's no guarantee about 5am when the decisions are made.

Shoreline weather and streets

Shoreline crews reviewed routes and procedures in October to be ready

With the exception of some possible flurries, snow is not expected in measurable amounts through the weekend. Temperatures will be briefly above freezing today, but will dip back down later this afternoon and will remain below freezing until Saturday. Temperatures are forecast to warm up over the weekend with the possibility of rain on Sunday.

Current road conditions: Shoreline City crews have been working hard and all primary routes have been plowed. Plow crews are currently touching up those routes and working on secondary streets.

They will move to neighborhood streets soon if possible. View maps of primary and secondary plow routes at shorelinewa.gov/stormready

Please be cautious while driving as ice is a possibility when snow melts and refreezes overnight. We are so thankful to our hard-working staff who have been putting in twelve-hour shifts to make our roads safe.

As snow begins to melt this weekend, please check the storm drains near you if you are able and clear any snow or debris from them to prevent localized ponding/flooding.
