I-5 express lanes to remain southbound through January 3, 2022

Thursday, December 30, 2021

Express lanes to remain open southbound
SEATTLE – The Interstate 5 express lanes will remain open southbound until Monday, January 3, 2022.

The Washington State Department of Transportation made that decision because of the continuing winter weather conditions.

With the cold temperatures, ice and snow can freeze and lock the express lanes gate mechanisms.

In the past, attempting to operate the systems in these conditions has resulted in damage to the gates.

Keeping the express lanes open 24 hours a day also helps to reduce snow and ice build-up on the roadway.

WSDOT plans to return express lanes operations to its regular schedule on January 3.

Waterfront Seattle construction update

Friday, November 19, 2021

A portion of the brand new bike facility with new landscaping on both sides.

A heavy cloud (literally) that carried a whole river's worth of downpour hovered over Seattle last weekend.

New southbound lanes, including the transit lane,
looking north on the west side of Alaskan Way S near S Main St.

Through the wind and rain, we are thankful to our team, neighbors and people traveling along the waterfront for their work and patience while we safely completed changes on Alaskan Way over the weekend!

New pedestrian area looking south at the west side of Alaskan Way S near Yesler Way.

It was worth the work as we now have new southbound lanes, including a transit lane, new sidewalks, new crosswalks and a portion of the brand new bike facility on the west side of Alaskan Way open in Pioneer Square.

Not a good time to go to Bellingham or Chehalis or any river town

Tuesday, November 16, 2021

Sumas, Washington in Whatcom county

The wind and rain may have died down here but the area around Bellingham in Whatcom county is a mess, to use a technical term. Interstate 5 has been closed in spots as the rain creates landslides that bring down trees.

So the freeway is either covered with dirt or blocked by trees.

It has been closed, cleared, opened, then blocked again.

All the rivers in western Washington are at flood stage and towns from Chehalis to Sumas to streets in Bellingham are underwater.

According to WSDOT:

Both directions of I-5 between North Lake Samish Drive (milepost 247) and Nulle Road (milepost 245) in south Whatcom County were closed overnight due to water over the road and debris slides. No detour routes were in place for these closures.

Tuesday morning, WSDOT will evaluate the hillside along northbound I-5 to determine the next steps. The issues on southbound I-5 are related to water over the roadway 6-8 inches deep, which WSDOT will work to address during the daylight hours tomorrow. Travelers should not attempt to go around the closures for everyone’s safety.

There are multiple other highway closures throughout Whatcom and Skagit counties due to flooding and slides. Our crews will continue to monitor and assess conditions and will reopen when it is safe to do so.

The National Weather Service provides updated weather alerts, including information about flooding.

North Cascades Highway closed for the season due to avalanche risk

Thursday, November 11, 2021

The North Cascades Highway in warmer months
MAZAMA- With a forecast of snow followed by warmer, wet weather, the SR 20 North Cascades Highway closed on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 for the season. The closure points will be milepost 134/Ross Dam Trailhead on the west side and milepost 171/Silver Star Gate on the east.

Up to ten more inches of snow was forecasted for Wednesday, followed by a warm, wet Thursday and Friday, increasing the risk of avalanches across Rainy and Washington passes. Unlike US 2 Stevens Pass and I-90 Snoqualmie Pass, the North Cascades does not have facilities to perform avalanche control work to alleviate the condition.

For the safety of the traveling public and winter maintenance crews, the pass must be closed.

Reopening in the spring is usually accomplished by early May.

Multiple lanes blocked on I-5 south Saturday night to apprehend impaired driver

Sunday, September 5, 2021

Driver stopped on I-5 after authorized pursuit. Photo courtesy WSP.

Washington State Patrol (WSP) received multiple 911 calls late Saturday evening, September 4, 2021 about a vehicle southbound on I-5 with "severe lane travel."

The trooper observed the vehicle collide with barriers multiple times and attempted to stop it. The vehicle did not stop and continued so the trooper deactivated his lights.

Per the new policing law, the trooper called his sergeant to obtain approval for pursuit.

The trooper reported that he had reasonable suspicion for DUI. The driver posed an imminent threat and pursuit was necessary for identifying / apprehending the suspect.

As per the new policing law on pursuits, he requested and obtained supervisory approval after relaying this information to the Sergeant.

Additional troopers blocked multiple lanes south on I-5 in Shoreline.

The trooper reactivated lights and caught up to the vehicle. The pursuit ended successfully with the driver being placed in custody.

The road was reopened.

CORRECTION: Shoreline does not have school zone cameras

Thursday, August 26, 2021

In a recent article about the start of school and speed restrictions by schools, it was stated incorrectly that Shoreline has speed zone cameras.

The cameras are only in Lake Forest Park where two major east west routes go alongside the boundaries of elementary schools.

Shoreline has school zone speed restriction signs and flashing lights but no cameras.

Drivers should remember that school activities and classes can take place year-round from early morning to late afternoon.

CORRECTION: School Zone cameras active and enforceable in LAKE FOREST PARK beginning September 1

On Wednesday, September 1, 2021, Shoreline School District schools will be back in session.

Students will be physically back on school grounds and school bell times go back to normal.

The flashers and school zone cameras in Lake Forest Park will be active and enforceable beginning September 1, 2021.

The cameras will be active and enforceable during these times:

  • Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 9:30am and 2:30pm to 4:00pm*
  • *Wednesday Early Release times are 7:30am to 9:30am and 1:40pm to 2:20pm

It is very important to remember that drivers are still required to obey the posted speed limit and lower their speed to 20 mph when children are present in the school zones, regardless of warning flashers and designated school zone times.

School classes may not be in session, but other events may be taking place (sports, after school events, etc.). Officers may still issue infractions for this violation.

"Early Release Days" will be held on Wednesdays when there are five days of school in the week (no holidays or non-student days) and release students 100 minutes before the regular end of the school day.

"Half Day Releases" will be held on November 24 (day before Thanksgiving) and June 17 (last day of school) for grades K-12.

There will also be half-days for elementary schools and Cascade K-8 for conferences on November 1-5, 2021, and March 7-11, 2022.

The camera system in Lake Forest Park is operational during normal school days. The system is not operational during scheduled school holidays and summer breaks.

WSDOT King County News - Montlake Bridge restrictions start tonight

Friday, July 30, 2021

Montlake Bridge photo courtesy WSDOT
From the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)

SEATTLE - The closure we’ve been previewing for months is almost here – and it’s a doozy.

The Montlake Bridge will close to motor vehicles from August 9 to September 3, 2021 as our contractor, Hamilton Construction Co., replaces the aging metal grid deck.

The bridge sidewalks will remain open during that stretch. Before construction can begin, crews will have to do two things: survey the bridge and set up containment.

This involves the following restrictions to traffic:
  • Overnight tonight (Friday morning, July 30): The contractor will hold all traffic, including pedestrians and bicycles, for up to 15 minutes at a time from midnight to 3am. This allows crews to safely survey the bridge. Expect delays during that time.
  • 2-6: Crews will begin to assemble containment on the bridge. Work will likely restrict access on the east bridge sidewalk from 6am to 7pm Monday through Friday. This means bicyclists and pedestrians will need to cross on the south end at East Shelby Street and on the north end at Walla Walla Road/NE Pacific Street.

Do you boat through the Montlake Cut? If you require bridge openings, things will looks different in August. Visit our boating information page to learn more.
