WSP asks public help to find package thieves from truck rollover at Northgate

Monday, July 3, 2023

Packages spilled from Fed Ex truck rollover

We previously reported on an accident that blocked all southbound lanes on I-5 for hours. A semi taking evasive action to avoid a two-car hit and run accident just ahead of him, lost control and rolled his vehicle, blocking all southbound lanes of I-5 at Northgate.

The semi was a FedEx truck, loaded with packages.

After the collision, individuals were stopping on the freeway and stealing the packages that came from the truck. This was captured on video footage that came from the scene.

The Washington State Patrol is taking this crime of opportunity very seriously and is in the process of identifying the individuals that took part in the thefts.

WSP is seeking videos and information on the individuals that were involved in stealing these packages. Please email Trooper Johnson at Rick.Johnson@wsp.wa.gov

Friday, November 4, 2022

WSDOT Traffic cam photo

After midnight on Thursday, November 3, 2022 freeway lanes at NE 130th were completely blocked and State Patrol was diverting traffic off I-5 at Northgate.

A 45 year old Seattle man, who was subsequently charged with DUI and reckless driving, caused a four car melee that sent three people to Harborview.

Miraculously, one person in the melee was listed by the State Patrol as not injured and another was injured but not taken to a hospital.

The causing driver was traveling westbound on Roosevelt Way NE. At the intersection of NE 130th and 5th NE he drove off the roadway, down the hillside to the northbound lanes of I-5 where he landed on the front of a vehicle driven by a 30 year old Mountlake Terrace woman.

His vehicle then hit another vehicle, driven by a 28 year old Mountlake Terrace woman, and rolled over, landing on its top. Her vehicle also rolled over and struck the front end of a vehicle driven by a 30 year old man from Puyallup.

She and a passenger were not wearing seat belts. She was not injured but her passenger, a 29 year old woman from Everett, was partially ejected from the vehicle and ended up underneath their vehicle, which was on its top. She was critically injured and among those transported to Harborview.

The vehicles were spread across five lanes of the freeway, completely blocking four lanes.

Northbound 5 was blocked for seven hours and 32 minutes for the response, investigation, and clean up.

Three of the vehicles were totalled and the one driven by the Puyallup man had 'reportable damage."

After release from Harborview, the causing driver was booked into jail on a charge of vehicular assault.

Wednesday, October 19, 2022

Multiple crews were on scene eastbound I-90 near Bellevue Way on the east channel bridge for a vehicle collision and car fire.

The vehicle fire was caused by a ruptured fuel line after a vehicle collision. The air was already saturated with smoke from wildland fires burning in the larger region.

Brief video from Bellevue Fire

While off-duty and commuting to work, Capt. Tom Tull of Eastside Fire and Rescue was first on scene this morning.

Capt. Tull, along with another bystander, was able to break a window to pull an entrapped driver from their burning truck.

Two patients were transported to hospitals, but the extent of their injuries was unknown. Two others involved were uninjured.

All lanes on eastbound Interstate 90 on the East Channel Bridge, between Mercer Island and Bellevue, were closed due to a collision and multiple vehicle fires. This is between the East Mercer Way on-ramp (milepost 8) and the Bellevue Way off-ramp (milepost 9).

Burning truck carrying propane and oxygen tanks explodes on I-5 downtown Thursday

Friday, July 29, 2022

WSDOT crews at the burnt out remains
of the truck fire on I-5
By Diane Hettrick

As if the ferry crashing into the dock weren't enough, a spectacular fire on I-5 at Mercer shut down all lanes of the freeway.

According to The Seattle Times

A truck carrying propane and oxygen tanks caught fire Thursday afternoon on Interstate 5 in Seattle, prompting authorities to close all lanes of the freeway while fire crews extinguished the blaze.

The fire started shortly before 1:10pm on the southbound freeway between the Lakeview and Mercer Street exits.

“Tanks are exploding,” the Seattle Fire Department said on Twitter shortly before 2pm. “Please avoid the area.”

The northbound lanes reopened at 2:30pm, a little more than an hour after the fire was reported. The southbound express lanes opened later in the afternoon, and three other southbound lanes opened in the early evening. Officials opened the remaining southbound lane about 7:30pm.

The driver was not injured. The fire and explosions were apparently all from his cargo. Seattle Fire is still on scene at this point. Fire retardant covered the road. It looks like something is still burning - the smoke cloud drifts toward the drivers trapped on the southbound lanes. Some traffic is getting through northbound.
A crew is working on the overhead sign. One SB lane has been opened to traffic.

Videos showed a fireball with black smoke reaching high in the air. Exploding tanks bounced along the roadway. (sorry - no visuals we can publish).

The sign appears singed.

Traffic was backed up five miles.

Seattle Fire spent several hours making sure the fire was out before turning the scene over to WSDOT.

Bridge inspectors checked out the elevated roadway. WSDOT crews came in to remove the burnt out truck and clear the roadway. WSDOT construction crews brought in equipment to work on the damaged overhead sign.
