Shoreline Police: Drowsy driving is never a bright idea

Monday, August 30, 2021

Just before 3:00 AM Saturday morning, August 21, 2021, King County deputies in Shoreline responded to the 17000 block of Aurora Ave N to investigate this one-car collision.

First responders arrived in minutes and discovered a 2007 Nissan SUV had struck a 50' light post that extends over Aurora Ave N.

Deputies interviewed the driver and learned he was drowsy, not drunk. The SUV had reportedly been purchased that day and was not insured. Both occupants were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Deputies are recommending the driver be charged with driving this XTerra with a suspended license.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports drowsy driving claimed 697 lives in 2019. It takes only a moment, as this case shows, for fatigue to take the wheel.

Damage, not death, was the result in this case but we know the next crash may be different.

Drunk or drowsy, the consequences are too often the same. Let's work together to keep King County roads safer.

Fatality collision on Aurora Friday evening

Sunday, July 25, 2021

Approximate location of fatality collision on Aurora. 145th is the border between Seattle and Shoreline.

The driver of a Honda sedan died Friday night, July 23, 2021 after he rear-ended a semi-truck on Aurora Ave N.

At around 10:45pm, a King County Sheriff’s Deputy reported a large group of illegal street racers driving near the Shoreline/Seattle city limits.

The driver of a Honda sedan in that group was travelling southbound on Aurora Ave N, and made a U-turn just south of N 145th St in Seattle.

When the driver pulled into northbound traffic, he rear-ended a semi-truck that was stopped for a traffic light. Shoreline Fire Department and Seattle Fire Department coordinated to extricate the driver from the sedan.

Medics attempted life-saving measures, but the 21-year-old man was declared deceased at the scene. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The driver of the semi was uninjured.

Detectives from the Seattle Police Department Traffic Collision Investigation Squad responded to the scene to investigate. Preliminary information suggests excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

A 51-year-old man suspected of DUI was arrested Tuesday night after colliding with a motorcyclist who was critically injured, according to the Lynnwood Police Department.

Around 10 p.m. on June 29, police say the suspect — a Shoreline man driving a Dodge Caravan — was traveling southbound on Highway 99 when he attempted to make a left-hand turn onto 52nd Avenue. He then struck the motorcyclist — a 21-year old Edmonds man — who was traveling northbound on Highway 99.

According to police, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and is facing vehicular assault charges for a crash. The suspect wasn’t injured.

The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. As of Wednesday morning, police spokesperson Joanna Small said the victim’s condition remained critical but stable.

Prior to medical aid arriving on the scene, Small said a passer-by rendered aid to the victim. The department’s traffic unit is investigating the collision, she said.

Shoreline Police: Speed bumps are a challenge on a good day. But when you're seriously impaired, well....

Monday, May 31, 2021

On 05/18/2021 at 10:28pm, King County deputies responded to a single-car accident in the 1100 block of N 192nd Street in Shoreline.

Arriving deputies found a silver SUV partially up on the curb.

The vehicle was still running and a male was passed out in the driver's seat.

Unfortunately, he had vomited all over himself.

Deputies slowly opened the vehicle door, which woke the driver immediately.

He shifted his vehicle into drive, rolling into a deputy's patrol car.

The driver was safely taken out of the car and detained, and then promptly got sick again.

The driver could not stand on his own and smelled of alcohol.

When asked if he needed an aid car, the driver declined any medical attention.

Deputies checked the driver's SUV and found red paint transfer on his vehicle.

They eventually located a red Honda Civic nearby that, it appears, was sideswiped by the suspect vehicle.

The driver was taken to the local precinct for a breath analysis.

However, due to his inebriated state, he was unable to stay awake long enough to perform the test.

Once deputies obtained a blood warrant, the fire department was called to the precinct to take the driver's blood samples.

Charges are pending while we await toxicology results from the Washington State Patrol lab.

Shoreline Police: Airbags save lives after accident at NE 150th and 15th NE

Sunday, May 30, 2021

Collision on 15th NE at NE 150th

If you judge simply by looking at these pictures, you'd think this May 21, 2021 crash in Shoreline would have resulted in very serious injuries.

Thankfully, that was not the case. Why? Airbags save lives. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that, as of 2017, more-than 50,000 lives have been saved by frontal airbags.

King County deputies responded to the intersection of NE 150th St and 15th Ave NE, just after 12:30pm, to investigate this crash. One motorist was transported to NW Hospital as a precaution.

Were it not for each pickup being airbag-equipped the outcome of this collision could have been much worse.

One driver was cited in this case but both, thanks to airbags, will go home.

We must always buckle-up. When used together, seatbelts and frontal airbags reduce fatalities by 61%.

Inebriated driver didn't appreciate the rescue

Saturday, April 17, 2021

From the King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO)

Chugging Vodka straight from the bottle is your prerogative. Might we suggest you do it at home instead of in front of a deputy who has just responded to your DUI crash?

The driver took out the stop sign, the pole and street name sign, and made a serious dent in the fence around the Seattle Golf Club. Photo courtesy KCSO

On April 1, 2021 at 6:00pm, our 9-1-1 communications center received a call regarding an accident in the 14500 block of Greenwood Ave N in Shoreline.

Responding deputies arrived and observed a female sitting in the driver's seat with her seatbelt on and a vodka bottle in her right hand. The deputies could smell the strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver.

The driver then became belligerent, insulted the deputies, and then "chugged" the rest of the bottle, which was approximately half full.

As the woman reached for a cigarette and lighter, deputies asked her not to smoke due to the smell of leaking gas from the accident. The woman replied by telling the deputies to "shut up." To ensure her safety, and those around her, deputies took the woman out of the vehicle.

Once out of the car, the female was unable to stand. Fire personnel checked her for injuries. To thank them, the driver assaulted a firefighter by smacking him with an open hand.

Due to her uncooperative nature, the female was taken to a local hospital for a blood draw. Again, the female was extremely combative, this time with hospital staff. After the blood draw, a deputy stayed with her until she sobered up enough to calm down.

The woman was then transported to the SCORE (South Correctional Entity) jail and booked for DUI.

Express lanes blocked by two collisions Tuesday morning.

Wednesday, April 7, 2021

Vehicles were being diverted off the express lanes

If you were using the express lanes Tuesday morning, you were in for a long wait.

WSDOT had to close the express lanes at Northgate around 9:30am to clear two fully blocking collisions near downtown Seattle.

The first collision was a semi-truck which jackknifed after hitting a barrier. It fully blocked all lanes just south of Pike Street.

A second collision blocked the express lanes at Mercer Street.

Drivers in the two mile backup already on the express lanes were diverted off at the Stewart Street exit. The express lanes remained closed for the safety of all the crews on the roadway. The clean up and investigation also delayed the regularly scheduled northbound opening.

There was no information about injuries or when the express lanes reopened.

On Tuesday morning, 2am, March 30, 2021, a Mountlake Terrace man, 19 year old Spencer A. Mudaliar, crashed his vehicle on the off ramp to the bus barn just south of NE 175th on southbound I-5.

He was traveling at a high rate of speed when his vehicle drove up the embankment and hit a tree before coming to a stop.

The off ramp was open, the scene was cleared, but traffic was still backed up

Shoreline man had to be cut from car after colliding with a utility pole in Lynnwood

Saturday, February 13, 2021

Photo from South County Fire

Thanks to MyEdmondsNews.com for this reporting. The driver's name has not been released.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle collision that occurred late Thursday morning, February 10, 2021 when a vehicle went off the road and struck a light pole on the ramp from 44th Avenue West to southbound I-5 in Lynnwood.

Emergency crews responded around 11:30am after the driver — a 35-year-old Shoreline man — lost control of his vehicle and hit a light pole, causing it to fall on top of the vehicle.

South County spokesperson Leslie Hynes said it took firefighters 16 minutes to free the driver. He was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the collision, she added.

The driver was transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. While Harborview is the preferred location for serious or critical injuries, state patrol spokesperson Trooper Rocky Oliphant said the driver was transported there because of the nature of the collision.

The collision is being investigated by the state patrol and Oliphant said preliminary evidence points to the driver’s speed being a possible cause. However, he added that investigators have not yet spoken to him.

“It’s anticipated that he’s going to be issued a speeding ticket,” Oliphant said. “(Investigators) would like to talk to the guy first to hear what happened.”
