Hit and run collision on NE 205th pushes vehicle across highway and into ditch

Tuesday, October 20, 2020

Victim's vehicle at wrecking yard

Early Sunday morning, at 2:50am October 18, 2020, a Shoreline resident was waiting in the left turn lane on NE 205th / SR 104 to turn onto 6th Ave NE.

She was waiting for a clear space for the turn when an oncoming, eastbound vehicle jumped the raised median separating the turn lanes and plowed head-on into her vehicle.

The sheer force of the collision caused my airbags to deploy and pushed my car back about 80 ft to the opposite side of the road onto the grassy ditch in front of the Nile golf course.

I was able to get out of the car and while screaming for help, the man driving the car suddenly threw it into drive and drove off east down NE 205th.

At least two nearby residents heard her screams and called 911. One ran down to the scene and waited with her until the police, state patrol and medics arrived.

Ironically, she had met the two paramedics earlier in the day when they admitted a patient to the Seattle hospital emergency room where she works.

They were shocked that I was standing and were expecting much, much worse when they got the call.

She is very sore, but did not need hospitalization and is recovering at home.

Her car is totalled.

Because pieces of the vehicle were left at the scene, investigators know that this is the model of the vehicle that hit and ran. The vehicle was black with gray trim.

The man who hit her was driving a newer, shiny and clean, black Subaru Crosstrek with a grey trim and tinted windows. It will have significant front-end damage.

The driver was wearing a white t-shirt and was of a heavier set build.

If you have any information, contact the Washington State Patrol.

Local author advocates for National Stop on Red Week following the tragic death of her mother in a Kenmore crosswalk

Sunday, August 2, 2020

Lori Koidahl at her mother's memorial garden
shows the book she wrote about how to navigate
grief and begin to heal

Not a day goes by that Shoreline resident Lori Koidahl doesn’t think about being a cautious driver. Her mom was tragically killed in a Kenmore cross walk on June 19, 2007 by a driver who ran a red light. The story, which made headline news, included six other pedestrians who were also injured with Lori’s mom, Kathy Cook, who was killed at the scene.

A truck speeding at 45mph hit a front loader, a massive piece of machinery that moves dirt, which sent the truck careening toward the pedestrians and crushed Lori’s mom against a utility pole.

This week Lori is placing a sign at her mom's memorial garden, which is at the intersection of the crash site. It promotes safe driving habits during National Stop on Red Week, August 2-8, 2020.

The signage serves as a reminder of the dangers in intersections and the importance of Stopping on RED. Preventing these crashes is in each driver’s control.

Stop On Red Week is observed in August to educate the public and bring awareness to the number and severity of intersection crashes. This event provides an opportunity to promote safe driving and remind drivers of the dangers of running red lights.

  • Between 2004-2018, an estimated 11,877 people were killed in crashes related to red-light running according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • In 2018, 846 people were killed, and an estimated 139,000 were injured in crashes involving red-light running.
  • In a 2018 national telephone survey by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 85 percent of drivers said it's very or extremely dangerous to speed through a red light, but 31 percent reported doing so in the past 30 days (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 2019).
  • The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) found that about half of red-light running crash deaths involve pedestrians, cyclists and occupants in vehicles struck by the red-light runners.
  • On average, two people died each day in red-light running crashes in the United States in 2018.

Lori Koidahl’s mom Kathy’s tragic death changed the trajectory of her life. She has become a safe driving advocate and recently wrote a book about her experience navigating the grief and healing she went through losing her mom in such an unexpected and traumatic manner.

Lori said, “I don't want others to have to go through what I went through. Especially when it can be prevented by paying closer attention to one's driving and “STOPPING ON RED.”

Her book is called Garden of Grief and can be purchased through normal retailers including Third Place Books, 206-366-3333 or HERE

WSP detectives seeking witnesses to I-5 hit and run which killed a Seattle resident

Sunday, July 5, 2020

WSP has identified this as the vehicle
which was involved in the hit and run on I-5

At approximately 1:36am on July 4, 2020, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) responded to a serious injury hit and run collision on SB I-5 and Olive Way.

The WSP closed both directions of I-5 for protest activity at 11:56pm on July 3rd.

This was the 19th consecutive night protesters had entered the freeway.

As protesters were gathered along the SB lanes of I-5, a passenger car, that appears to have entered I-5 from an exit ramp, drove through the group at a high rate of speed, striking two protestors.

Video footage from King 5 HERE

The passenger car continued driving SB on I-5 until it stopped near Edgar Martinez Way. WSP Troopers contacted and arrested the driver.

The suspect is a 27 year old male from Seattle, Dawit Kelete, who is under arrest. Impairment does not appear to be a factor and the cause remains under investigation. The two people who were hit were both transported to Harborview Medical Center.

They include a 32 year old individual from Bellingham, Diaz Love, who suffered serious injuries and is currently in serious condition at Harborview.

The other is a 24 year old Seattle resident, Summer Taylor, who died of their injuries.

WSP detectives are seeking any information, pictures, or videos from witnesses to the collision. Contact Detective Todd Early at 253-348-1891 or by email at Todd.Early@wsp.wa.gov.

Correction: both protesters identify as non-binary and use the pronouns they and them.
Update: Suspect's name has been released by WSP
