From bad to worse: When real life is like a comedy show

Monday, June 8, 2020

Reader John Boril was the witness to what might seem like a far-fetched story - but he had his phone to take pictures.

Stury and photos by John Boril

Had an interesting one here today. Began about two this afternoon with a fairly small, routine crash along 5th Avenue NE, just north of NE 175th.

A woman driving southbound on 5th ran off the road and crashed into a small boat shed. (She admitted that she was using her phone behind the wheel.) No big deal.

Then the tow truck showed up. He had to pull the car uphill out of the shed. But as soon as he cleared the curb, the car’s rear was now on 5th Avenue facing downhill. And it was in neutral.

The now loose car rolled past the tow truck and crashed into a pickup parked nearby. The tow truck driver hopped out to try to stop the car, apparently leaving the tow truck in gear.

It took off down the road and went about a block before crashing through a fence at the corner of 5th NE and NE 178th. It crashed down into a yard, rolled across the yard, and smashed into the home.

The good news, nobody hurt in either crash. The bad news, nobody was rolling video when the tow truck got away!

State Patrol concerned about increase in motorcycle fatalities

Thursday, May 21, 2020

Motorcycles don't have the safety features of cars
Unsplash.com
For a motorcycle rider, what could be better than warm spring weather, sunny days, and open roads?

For too many riders in Washington, recent lower traffic volumes have led to higher speeds and tragically, to an increase in rider deaths.

In 2020, 12 of the 17 motorcycle fatalities on Washington roads occurred during the month of April. Speeding was a common factor in these almost always preventable collisions.

Speed is usually the answer. There has been a significant increase in high speed violations by both cars and motorcycles. Speeds in the mid to upper 100’s have been observed with one vehicle traveling 192mph. At these speeds, the chances of being involved in a collision increase dramatically, and the severity of the collision is often deadly.

In 2019, there were 92 motorcycle fatalities, the most since 1982.

Leading factors contributing to these numbers were speed, inexperience as demonstrated by a lack of proper license endorsement, and driving while impaired.

Driving while impaired is always dangerous, but when the impaired person makes a choice to operate a motorcycle, the danger rises significantly.

The operation of a motorcycle takes more mental focus and physical coordination than driving a car. Focus and coordination are severely diminished by intoxicants and drugs. Motorcycles also lack many of a car’s safety devices such as seatbelts and airbags to protect a rider in a collision. Even “minor” motorcycle collisions can have major consequences.

No need for speed

WSP would like to remind all motorcyclists that open roads do not mean you are free to open the throttle. Enjoy your ride but stay safe, obey speed limits, wear safety gear, be visible to other drivers, pay attention, and always ride sober.

We would also like to remind all motorists that no matter how busy the roadways are or are not, speed is the number one factor in traffic fatalities. Slow down. The life you save may be your own.

Follow up: Ferry and commuter train traffic was delayed for two hours after train sideswiped truck

Sunday, February 9, 2020

BNSF access road on Dayton

Ferry and commuter train service were both delayed and vehicle traffic to and from the Edmonds waterfront was blocked on both Dayton and Main Streets after a truck was sideswiped while driving on a private access road Tuesday morning, Edmonds police said.

The truck — driven by an 82-year-old Edmonds man — was traveling southbound on the road at 5:04 a.m. when it was hit by a southbound tanker train, Edmonds police spokesperson Sgt. Shane Hawley said. Following the incident, the driver was able to get out of the vehicle, then walked to nearby Dayton Street, where police found him. There were no signs of impairment, but police don’t know why the man was driving along the tracks, Hawley added.

The man was transported to Harborview Medical Center but his injuries did not appear to be life threatening, South County Fire spokesperson Leslie Hynes said.

The private access road is one of two that run along either side of the railroad tracks from Dayton Street southbound, and is owned by BNSF. The road on the east side ends at Woodway, but the gravel road on the west side — on which the man was traveling — ends after about 1,200 feet, Hawley explained. That is where the truck was stopped when the train arrived, sideswiping his vehicle.

The train blocked access to the Washington State ferries Edmonds-Kingston terminal, causing delays in early-morning sailings, and also resulted in delays to Sounder commuter train service. Following an investigation into the incident and track inspection, the train was moved at 7:04 a.m., and ferry, train and vehicle traffic resumed.

In response to the Tuesday morning train-vehicle collision, the City of Edmonds has placed temporary “Do Not Enter’ signage at the entrance to two access roads that run parallel to BNSF railroad tracks south of Dayton Street.

The city is working with BNSF to get them to place more permanent signs on their property to prevent future incidents.

On Monday, January 6, 2020, at 7:45am, a car sheared off a power pole, caught on fire, went through a fence and crashed into a house at 220th St SW and 44th Ave W in Mountlake Terrace. The house caught on fire. South County Fire responded.

The driver of the vehicle, a Mountlake Terrace woman in her mid-20s, died. A woman who was in the house was taken to hospital as a precaution for smoke exposure.

Then on Monday, January 6, 2020 another driver crashed into a building, but this one ran away. Here's the story as reported by MLTNews.com

Mountlake Terrace police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that crashed into a mixed-use building at 24001 56th Ave. W. early Monday morning, then fled the scene.
According to Mountlake Terrace Police Chief Pete Caw, an officer had concluded a security check at the Recreation Pavilion just after 2:30 a.m. Monday when he observed a silver Acura sedan “driving at a very high rate of speed” near the 22800 block of 56th Avenue West.  The vehicle was driving too fast for police to catch up, but the officer observed the vehicle run a red light at 236th Street Southwest and then lost sight of it.
Patrol units checking the area located the vehicle after it had crashed through the front door of first-floor medical offices. Occupants living in the residences upstairs were uninjured, police said. The driver had left the scene.
While police were investigating the incident, the registered owner called 9-1-1 and claimed that her vehicle had been stolen.  However, further investigation revealed that the car had not been stolen but was instead being driven by her boyfriend.
The vehicle was removed from the building and towed to the police department. Caw said that police are still searching for the driver.
