Woman killed at problem intersection in Lake City by hit and run driver

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

28th NE and NE 125th - a dangerous
intersection in Lake City

Even before Maria Banda was fatally injured by a hit-and-run driver while crossing Northeast 125th Street with her husband, residents in Seattle’s Lake City neighborhood had been asking for pedestrian improvements along the busy arterial.
Now, as they mourn the loss of a community member — at least the second traffic-related death in the area in six months — the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) says it’s “fast-tracking” the neighborhood’s repeated requests for action.

The #41 bus stops at 28th NE which is the location of the Lake City Library, the Farmers Market, and the Community Center.

There is no crosswalk on NE 125th, a major east-west connector to Lake City Way (Bothell Way farther north).

Car goes off the road on Perkins Way

Saturday, August 10, 2019

Vehicle went off Perkins Way
By Diane Hettrick

Perkins Way is a beautiful, narrow, winding road that twists and turns along McAleer Creek from 15th NE in Shoreline to Pfingst Animal Acres Park in Lake Forest Park.

The stream crosses under the road at a ravine, then parallels it before it goes underground on its way to Lake Washington.

The road is marked 25mph but people who live on Perkins report that cars racing up the road at twice that speed are common.

Thursday night on Perkins way, a driver was speeding and lost control. The vehicle went off the road and lodged on a bridge that stopped them from going into the creek.

If not for the bridge, the vehicle would have dropped seven feet into the creek, likely impaled by large tree sections and boulders in that portion of the creek.

No alcohol or drugs were involved. Excessive speed and inexperience were contributors to the collision.

The driver and passenger did not sustain any injuries. The roadway was closed for about 45 minutes.

Thank you to the police officers working the scene as well the public works staff that did an exceptional job cleaning up.
