Driver sentenced for hit and run that killed a Shoreline mother in 2021

Sunday, August 4, 2024

On November 16, 2021, a Shoreline mom was driving her daughter to soccer practice when she was hit by an impaired driver who ran from the scene.

The collision took place in Shoreline at the intersection of N 185th and Linden Ave N.

Diane Marx was killed immediately and her two young daughters injured. (see our previous story)

On July 25, 2024 the driver, Aaron Ott,  accepted a plea agreement for counts of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, hit-and-run felony death, and reckless driving that will put him in jail for over ten years.

According to reporting on Fox13Seattle.com,

"Officials said Ott was speeding when he crashed into Diane’s car near the intersection of Linden Ave N and N 185th Street. Investigators said Ott ran away from the scene and hid in a shed before officers found and arrested him. According to court documents, a Drug Recognition Expert Officer was called to the scene where Ott admitted he drank, took Xanax and Adderall on that fateful day.

"A King County judge sentenced Ott to 10 years and nine months in prison. He was ordered not to contact the Marx family and will be enrolled in alcohol and substance abuse treatment. A judge also ordered Ott to wear a portable alcohol breath device immediately after his release for 18 months."

68 WSDOT work zone accidents in July
That’s 68 work zone collisions. Not this year. Not this summer. Not statewide. Just the month of July across the greater Puget Sound area.

We try to keep it pretty light on here, but it needs to be said: This is completely unacceptable and preventable.

Far too often, our workers are hurt in these types of collisions.

Like many of you, they are just trying to do their jobs. Like many of you, they just want to go home to their families at the end of their shift.

Whether we work during the day or night, the dangers road workers face has increased exponentially.

The good news is that the fix should be simple.

The leading causes of these collisions are speeding, distracted driving, driving under the influence and following too closely

The solution is quite literally a matter of slowing down, giving the crews plenty of space to work and paying attention to your surroundings.

Please help WSDOT workers get home safely.

Travels with Charlie: Road Rage has no Winners, Only Losers

Police, fire trucks, aid cars responding to road rage incident in Lake Forest Park

By Gordon Snyder

This afternoon Charlie and I were in my office before heading for a walk somewhere… The door was open.

We were startled to hear very loud yelling and the roar of a motorcycle racing up NE 204th from the intersection. Charlie barked and I looked from the porch to glimpse a motorcycle thru the garden bushes.

We stepped back into my office. A few minutes later, some emergency sirens got us back outside. Police and EMT / Fire trucks were setting up along 204th past where I saw the motorcycle on the side of the road.

Charlie and I, walking up the hill to get a closer view. A new type of Travels with Charlie for us to experience.

A motorcycle was on side of the road.

What happened? Seems this was another "Road Rage” incident. But right here on the road to the park?

Apparently, Someone made a wide turn off 55th Ave NE up the NE 204th hill that triggered the motorcyclist to race up the hill on the wrong side of the road yelling and kicking the driver's car door.

Turns out that action didn’t favor the angry motorcyclist. He made a sizable dent in the car door, lost his kicking shoe and then toppled his motorcycle…

He was taken away in the Shoreline Aid truck with significant leg injury.

I asked one of the Officers if he broke his leg?… He replied ”you could say that” with an I can’t say more gesture.

I asked if this was Road Rage? Again same response. ”you could say that”.

Officers set the motorcycle upright and placed the rider's shoe on the seat after the rider was transported for medical care. Photo by Gordon Snyder

The Officers set the motorcycle upright. See that shoe on the seat? They picked up a shoe he probably was wearing when he kicked the car as he raced up the hill.

Hmmm… Maybe Road Rage masked the Mass times Velocity relationship most motorcycle folks totally understand.

Road Rage has no Winners, Only Losers.

87 year old North City woman killed in crosswalk on 15th NE

Friday, June 14, 2024

A photo by David Sprengeler posted to social media shows the scene of the collision

An 87 year old North City woman was struck and killed by a van in a crosswalk on 15th Ave NE at NE 180th just after 9am Thursday morning, June 14, 2024.

The driver was making a left turn from 180th to 15th when he struck her. He immediately stopped and started CPR.

A King County Sheriff’s Office  photo shows the van at the intersection of 180th and 15th

Shoreline police and fire responded to the scene and according to a statement from the King County Sheriff’s Office, the driver stayed on the scene and cooperated.

Shoreline Fire reports that their first unit, L161 was on scene 2 minutes and 25 seconds after being dispatched and found bystander CPR going on. Their personnel worked on her, put her in the back of the medic unit which arrived about two minutes later, where the medics continued working on her, but ultimately she passed away.

The incident is still under investigation and the intersection was closed for several hours on Thursday morning.

By noon, the road had been re-opened and traffic had returned to normal.

That crosswalk (like most others in Shoreline) has not been reconfigured with a Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) to give pedestrians a head start while crossing intersections.

According to the city’s Traffic Report, three Shoreline intersections have recently been reconfigured with LPI, but 180th and 15th is not on the list of intersections planned for safety improvements.

According to the Washington State Patrol’s website, there have been 34 collisions near that intersection since 2016.

Pedestrian, fatal and serious injury crashes hit record highs in Shoreline

Sunday, June 9, 2024

A map from the city’s traffic report shows the locations of car crashes in Shoreline

By Oliver Moffat

Shoreline’s roads are more dangerous than ever. The number of pedestrian crashes hit a record high last year and more people were killed or seriously injured on Shoreline’s roads than ever before. These grim statistics come from Shoreline’s annual Traffic Report which was released this week.

Crashes are more violent than before. The number of collisions has returned to pre-pandemic levels but the percentage of those collisions that leave someone injured or dead is higher now than before. The number of fatal and serious injury collisions is increasing at a faster rate than the growth of the city’s population.

Graphs from Shoreline’s traffic report shows
the increasing trend of crashes that kill and injure people

Shoreline’s data is consistent with state and nation-wide trends. According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, traffic deaths reached a 33-year high and more pedestrians and motorcyclists were killed in Washington last year than in any other year on record.

The gory details of the Traffic Report will be reviewed by the Shoreline city council at the June 10 meeting followed by a discussion of automated Traffic Cameras

Information on how to provide public comment and how to attend either in person or online is available on the city’s website.

Amazingly, no one was injured but traffic was at a standstill for hours.

Just one of the poles that came down

It was quite a mess. Along three blocks of Aurora, poles were leaning, broken, touching the street, with wires blocking businesses and draped along the road

Seattle City Light was on scene at 10:30pm, replacing poles. The road was reopened at 1:50am, almost four hours later.

Did you witness an accident and confrontation at 175th & Meridian Tuesday afternoon?

Friday, April 12, 2024

Hua with her students
On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, Mandarin teacher Hua Zhang was headed for her 3:25pm class at Meridian Park Elementary.

She was stopped at a left turn red light at the intersection of 175th and Meridian when her car was hit from behind. That driver immediately drove off, but then had to stop for another light.

Hua ran to his car to tell him that he damaged her car and she needed his insurance information. His response was to push her away and drive off again.

A parent who was near enough to hear the crash saw that another person was recording the incident. If you are that person, please contact Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com

Hua is often in these pages with her teaching, artwork, and dancing. She was only able to get a blurry photo of the hit and run driver who assaulted her.

I'm hoping that we can help her.

Crashes reported to Shoreline police up 65%; serious injury and fatal crashes up 94%; police vacancies and street racers blamed

Thursday, April 4, 2024

A map from the WSDOT crash data portal shows ten years of fatal and serious injury crashes in Shoreline

By Oliver Moffat

Shoreline’s annual police report released this week shows a 65% increase in crashes reported to police. Crashes that kill or leave people with life altering injuries have increased in Shoreline by 94%. Police traffic citations have fallen since 2018. The police blame staffing shortages and street racers.

A grim statistic appeared in Shoreline’s 45-page annual Police Service Report presented to the Shoreline city council at this week’s meeting.

A graph from the city’s 2023 Police Service Report shows the number of reported traffic collisions in Shoreline has increased by 65%

Between 2018 and 2022 the city averaged 394 car crashes reported to police each year. But in 2023, the police responded to 651 crashes - an increase of 65%.

In comments to the city council, Chief of Police Kelly Park said, “the reported driving for folks out there is just highly aggressive and we have a lot more poor driving going on.” She added that street racing has been a significant contributing factor.

The reported crash numbers exclude suspected hit-and-runs and DUIs. DUI citations have also increased to 43 after hitting a low of 20 in 2021.

A graph from the Shoreline police report shows the number of traffic citations issued by Shoreline police dropped from 5,263 in 2018 to 312 in 2022.

A graph from the same police report shows the number of traffic citations issued by Shoreline police dropped from 5,263 in 2018 to 312 in 2022.

Because of staffing shortages, Shoreline has re-assigned its traffic unit to cover 911 calls.

Chief of Police Kelly Park (left) and Captain Tim Meyer present the annual police service report to the Shoreline city council

The police report cited a “… staffing crisis caused by the loss of over 50 commissioned officers with King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), who Shoreline contracts with for police services, due to the vaccine mandate in 2021.”

Chief Park said her department has a goal to rebuild the city’s traffic unit this year.

Fifteen years of data compiled from WSDOT and the city’s traffic reports show fatal and serious injury crashes in Shoreline have increased from an average of 10 to an average of 19 per year

According to data collected from WSDOT and Shoreline’s annual traffic report, for the ten years from 2008 through 2018, the city averaged 10 fatal and serious injury crashes per year.

But that rate jumped starting in 2019. For the five years from 2019 through 2023, the city averaged 19 series injury and deadly crashes per year - a 94% increase.

On Monday April 15, 2024 the city council will hold a public hearing and discuss Shoreline’s Transportation Improvement Plan. The plan, which serves as a six-year roadmap for transportation projects in the city, is updated each year.

According to last year’s plan, the city has identified $365 million dollars worth of traffic improvements. However (spoiler alert) $95 million worth of projects are unfunded and $110 million are only partially funded.

WSDOT installing new guardrails on NE 145th and 23 other locations

Saturday, March 2, 2024

Safer guardrail. Photo courtesy WSDOT
It’s unrealistic to expect guardrails and barriers along our roads will never get hit, but we can help make them safer when crashes do happen.

A new project to improve 24 guardrails and barriers across King, Snohomish and Whatcom counties begins in mid-March.

We’re replacing materials along our guardrails and barriers at various spots along Interstates 5, 90 and 405, US 2 and State Routes 522 and 527, adding energy-absorbing equipment to improve safety during potential crashes.

The new materials placed alongside some of our busiest on- and off-ramps facing oncoming traffic are designed to crumple to better absorb energy in the event a vehicle hits them.

We’ll also replace the attenuators at the southbound I-5 exits to James St and NE 71st St in Seattle, adding an accordion-like cushion from nearby concrete barriers to help reduce a vehicle’s force in the event of a crash.

This important WSDOT project will impact the NE 145th on ramp to southbound I-5, which will be closed overnight on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 (11pm - 5am). The work is expected to take only one night to complete.

You can find updated project schedules on our social media accounts and our real-time Travel Center Map.
