Birmingham, England, August 4, 2022 – Star sprinter Gina Bass and newbie Wurrie Njadoe are in the semi finals of the women’s 200m semis of the commonwealth games ongoing in England.

Bass, earned yet another milestone after running a timing of 22:87 finishing second in her heat while Njadoe had 24:12 which gave her a berth in the semis with fastest best losers.

Bass who is in her second commonwealth games, is now looking for a historic final in 200m, after missing the slot in the recently concluded World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon USA.

Njadoe representing Gambia for the first time, is now looking for a lifetime achievement. Both will run on Friday evening. The men counterparts all failed to progress to the next round.

The 24-year-old athlete has also won NCAA accolades in the 100m and the long jump, competing for Kansas State, and she's earned a bachelor's degree in Management.

Wurrie attended Briarcrest Elementary, Kellogg Middle School, and Shorecrest High School. She competed in cross country, track, and basketball, including a 2016 basketball state championship.

Sports Desk: Shorecrest shines at district track meet

Boys 4x100 relay team. From left: Zach Ridenhour ,
Satchell McKee, Sammy Seliga, and Gabe Nelson

The Northwest District One 3A Track and Field Finals wrapped up late Friday night at Shoreline Stadium, too late for more than the raw results to be posted.

With the light of a new day, there’s time to give pats on the back, tell stories of persistence paying off and obstacles being overcome, and see what’s next for those athletes who qualified for this weekend’s State Championships.

On the boys side, Shorewood finished second behind boys (and girls) champion Edmonds-Woodway, while Shorecrest was fourth.

The Shorecrest girls finished second, with Shorewood coming in fifth.

Two senior Scots, in particular, seemed to epitomize the perseverance and dedication that only the greatest athletes possess.

Sammy Seliga was the lone junior (to three seniors) on last year’s 4x100 relay team that missed going to State by an eyelash.

He said, “I knew it was going to be a challenge just getting close to last year's success. But with some persistence and great coaching by the mastermind Coach C, we were able to find great success and now we are going to state!
"This means so much to me because I knew our team last year should’ve made it to state easy, but we had bad luck on the worst day last year. This team has worked so hard to get to state that no matter the outcome I know we accomplished something that’s been driving me for the past year.”

Scots football fans will remember Seliga giving the Shorecrest faithful something to celebrate late in their last game when he ran an interception back the length of the field for the Scots’ only score, in a lopsided season-ending playoff loss to mighty Bellevue.

800 Champ Lauren Block (R) and second-place
finisher Livia Glascock.JPG
Lauren Block won the girls 800 Friday night for the third consecutive year.

Ho-hum, you say?

Hardly.

The University of Portland-bound runner nursed a foot injury during the winter that curtailed her preseason training by a good measure, and if that wasn’t enough, she was diagnosed with mononucleosis on March 20.

On top of that, she then spent three days in the hospital with pancreatitis.

Friday night she broke to the lead in the first 100 meters and never looked back, beating second-place teammate Livia Glascock by nearly six seconds.

Block came up two seconds short of setting the school record, but she’ll get at least one more crack at it next weekend at State.

Block reflected on her HS track career that is rapidly coming to a close.

“My sophomore year, I was really excited about winning the 800 for the first time. I knew after that year that I wanted to defend my title for the next two years, but it wasn’t something I was completely sure could happen until I did it last night.
"In the hospital, I wrote down the two things I still wanted to do this season despite having mono: win districts in the 800 and get the school record. Hopefully, I get my second goal next week, but it feels good to have at least achieved one of them so far.”

Block and Glascock on the Victory Stand

40th Annual Shoreline Track and Field Invite Saturday, April 27

In its second year of coed format, Shoreline Schools get ready to host largest invite ever!

Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Shoreline Stadium, 18560 1st Ave NE (entrances on 185th). Starting time 9:00am

Coed format: Last year marked the first time since 1982 that the Shoreline Invite provided a coed meet format. It was a huge success and 2019 promises another strong contingent of the Northwest’s finest prep Track and Field athletes.

This year’s meet will be the largest ever Shoreline Invitational for the 40th annual event on Saturday, April 27. Over 1600 athletes from 77 schools are expected at one of the biggest invitational meets in the Northwest. Both Track and Field events are slated to begin at 9am with last event scheduled for 6:55pm.

Storied history here at Shoreline: This year’s meet is celebrated as the 40th annual meet. The meet first began in 1974 and continued through 1982, with the coed version being held between 1977-1982.

With the closing of Shoreline High School, the meet shut down from 1983-1988. In 1989, the meet started up again under the name Thunderbird Invitational as an all-boys format and has been going strong since. The name was changed back to Shoreline Invitational in 1994 with both Shoreline high schools (Shorecrest and Shorewood) supporting the meet. 2018 marked the switch back to coed.

Ticket Prices: Adults $8
Students W/ASB $5
Seniors and Children $5

Team title up for grabs: Last year, Kamiakin boys and Curtis girls were team champions. Curtis girls are back to defend their title while Kamiakin is not attending due to conflicts with Prom. This year’s field is really balanced and predicting a team champion will be as easy as predicting the weather in Western Washington in the spring.

Both boys and girls fields are packed, and some great competition for the hardware will be in play.

Girls Records to be broken: Considering the girls' meet records were from such a small sample size (1977-82), every girl’s meet record but three were broken last year. The only holdouts were Roosevelt’s Dana Carr in Long Jump (18-0 ¼, 1978), Lynnwood’s Jacki Henry in Discus (148-8 ½, 1979) and Sammamish product Julie Cosgrove in High Jump (5-6, 1977).

Fun fact: Those hold over records from the 70’s would rank in the top 10 statewide this current year on athletic.net, with Henry’s Discus sitting at the number 2 slot. No doubt more records will fall in this the 2019 meet.

State’s best are here: Of the 17 events that exist on the athletic.net state leader board, many of the state leaders will be in attendance on Saturday. In addition, multiple events include three or more of the state’s top 10. State leaders are here in boys 100 and 200 (Dorien Simon, Lakes), Girls 1600 (Allie Janke, North Central), Girls Pole Vault (Chloe Cunliffe, West Seattle), Girls Shot Put (Matehya Bryant, Eastlake), Girls Javelin (Natalie Holmer, North Creek) and Girls High Jump (Allison Kremer, Skyline and Holland Pilukas, Woodinville).

You don’t want to miss the distance races as Shoreline has a history for some record fast times and this year should be no exception! See other state leaders and entries by visiting athletic.net.
