200 volunteers needed for Special Olympics Track and Field events in Shoreline May 5

Track and field events for the Special Olympics will be held in Shoreline on May 5, 2019 at the Shoreline Stadium, 18560 1st Ave NE, 98155.

200 volunteers are needed, according to volunteer coordinator Alysanne Stack. But she says there is no sports experience required! Volunteers just need to be comfortable with moving around most of the day and being on their feet.

Each person gets to pick their own activity to volunteer for. And each activity is split into shifts (7am-12:15pm, 7am-5pm, 11:45am-5pm) so a person can choose the amount of time they can commit.

This link provides more information about times/roles etc. Click on ‘Register Now’ then ‘Adult Volunteers’

If you have questions or want to sign up, you can register online or contact Alysanne by email or phone 206-231-6034.

Frank Workman on Sports: Shorecrest girls take 1st and 2nd at Cross-Country Districts

By Frank Workman

A few years ago at the District Finals track meet, a meet official wandered over to the pole vault area to watch the boys perform. He stood next to three outstanding distance runners from one school who were admiring their efforts.

One commented “Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to fly like that?”.

Her teammate responded “Wouldn’t it be nice to compete in something that didn’t hurt every time we did it”.

Such is the life of a long-distance runner. Lots of long, lonely, largely unnoticed workouts designed to push the body’s limits to painful exhaustion.

For two highly competitive Shorecrest seniors Saturday, their hours of dedicated exertion bore the fruits of victory at the District One 3A Cross Country meet at South Whidbey HS.

Lilly Visser won the District Championship with a time of 19:02, while teammate Lauren Block (two-time District Champion in the 800 meters) ran second in 19:22 over the 5,000 meter course.

Full race results are here.

These two are no strangers to the readers of these pages. Their previous exploits have been chronicled here. (See previous article)

After the race, the two talked about their strategy going into the race.

"I thought it would be smart to let the Edmonds-Woodway girls set the pace," said Visser. With a GPA of 3.9, she’s knows what smart is.

“About halfway through, the pace seemed pretty moderate, so I took the lead.”

Block, who carries a GPA just a hair higher (3.956) than her teammate, commented “Our goal going into the race was to finish 1 and 2, so I’m glad we were able to do that. When Lilly took the lead back in the woods, I just decided to go with her. I wanted to get closer to her while building more distance between myself and the Ed-Way girls”.

The two took time to reflect on what running has done for them.

Visser — “Running has provided an outlet in my life that allows me to take a break from the stress that school brings, and challenges me in a way that nothing else does. The combined mental and physical training always challenges me but it has brought really great rewards”.

Among those rewards, Lilly is weighing her college choices, with Seattle U., Gonzaga, and Loyola-Marymount under consideration. She also volunteers with the Pink Polka Dot Guild, an inspiring local charity that raises funds for pediatric cancer research.

Block — “Running has given me so many great opportunities, taking me to outstanding meets like NXR, Seaside, and the Oregon Relays. The biggest plus is most of my closest friends in high school I’ve made through running cross-country and track”.

Block has agreed to attend the University of Portland next year.

The two train together, nearly year-round. Chances are if you’ve been driving in LFP or near the Shorecrest campus and have seen a pair of teenage girls running through the neighborhood, it’s been these two.

They keep a record of every workout, and have even calculated how many miles they’ve run together since their freshman year.

As they prepare for next Saturday’s State Finals at Sun Willows Golf Course over in Pasco, they’ll both go over the 4,000 mile mark.

And I’ll bet every single mile brought its own degree of pain.

Results, photos, from Saturday’s Shoreline Invitational - Shorecrest senior Sydney Brandt named Top Female Field Athlete

Thursday, May 3, 2018

Sydney Brandt won two events and was
named Top Female Field Athlete
The Shoreline Stadium 38th invitational track meet marked the first time in a decade that girls were once again included in the events.

The events were coed from 1977 - 1982. When Shoreline High School closed in 1982, so did the big track event.

When it was brought back, it was on a smaller scale, with boys only.

Now it's back to full strength with boys and girls events.

Curtis Girls and Kamiakin boys won the girls and boys team championships respectively. Curtis was also the combined boys and girls team champ as well.

Shorecrest placed sixth in the team championships.

Sydney Brandt, Shorecrest senior, was the winner of both the Long Jump and Triple Jump and was named Top Female Field Athlete.

Soggy weather for the meet didn't dampen spirits

Despite the leaden skies and soggy weather Saturday, the stands were filled with enthusiastic track fans who cheered on many athletes to personal records.

Thanks to John McAlpine, we have some great photos of Shorecrest athletes!

39th Annual Shoreline Track and Field Invite Saturday, April 28 at Shoreline Stadium

Friday, April 27, 2018

2017 Shoreline Invite event

Annual Invite now coed for first time since 1982 with 1671 participants expected to compete!

39th Annual Shoreline Track and Field Invite will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Shoreline Stadium, 9:00am, 18560 1st Ave NE (entrance on NE 185th)

Coed format: For the first time in 38 years, Shoreline Stadium will host a coed version of the Shoreline Invitational Track and Field meet. Some of the best boys and girls track and field teams and individuals from around the state will be in attendance for the 39th annual event on Saturday, April 28. Both Track and Field events are slated to begin at 9 AM with last event slated for 6:45pm. Over 1,600 athletes from 78 schools are expected at one of the biggest invitational meets in the Northwest.

Storied history here at Shoreline: This year’s meet is celebrated as the 39th annual meet. The meet first began in 1974 and continued through 1982, with the coed version being held between 1977-1982. With the closing of Shoreline High School, the meet shut down from 1983-1988. In 1989, the meet started up again under the name Thunderbird Invitational in an all boys format, and has been going strong since. The name was changed back to Shoreline Invitational in 1994, with both Shoreline high schools (Shorecrest and Shorewood) supporting the meet.

Ticket Prices: Adults $8
Students W/ASB $5
Seniors and Children $5

Team title up for grabs: Last year, Bonney Lake edged out North Central to win the boys title by three points, 45-42. This year’s field is really balanced and predicting a team champion will be as easy as predicting the weather in Western Washington in the spring. Both boys and girls fields are packed and some great competition for the hardware will be in play.

Girls Records to be broken: Considering the girls meet records are from such a small sample size (1977-82), there will for sure be a large amount of meet records to fall on Saturday.

Frank Workman: Announcing those meet records as well as our top eight finishers will be local prep supporter Frank Workman. Frank recently moved to San Diego to be with his family, but is flying back to once again announce our winners. He’ll be busy on Saturday with plenty records to be set.

State’s best are here: Of the 17 events that exist on the athletic.net state leader board, many of the state leaders will be in attendance on Saturday. In addition, multiple events include three or more of the state’s top 10. The Girls 300 Hurdles features the top three in the state going head to head for the first time with Karlee Stueckle from Emerald Ridge as the leader coming in just ahead of host school product Ami Njadoe of Shorecrest.

You don’t want to miss the distance races as Shoreline has a history for some record fast times and this year should be no exception! See other state leaders and entries by visiting athletic.net.
