Shorewood track & field star scores coaching job at WSU

Saturday, August 19, 2017

CharLee Linton is coaching at WSU

CharLee Linton, a 2012 graduate of Shorewood High School, joined the Washington State University track and field staff in July 2017 to assist in the coaching women’s distance corps.

CharLee graduated from Shorewood High School where she competed in Cross Country and Track for the Thunderbirds.

“We are very excited to hire CharLee,” Coach Wayne Phipps said. “As a student-athlete at WSU she brought a level of dedication, commitment and passion that is rarely matched, and as a volunteer assistant coach for us last year, she brought that same level.
"CharLee impressed me right away as an assistant coach as she has a great coaching intuition and a level of understanding of the sport that belies her age.
"It was very important to maintain a continuity with our student-athletes and to hire someone who is 100% dedicated to the student-athletes at WSU as well as being 100% committed to helping this program achieve success at the highest level. CharLee fits of all that perfectly: she understands our program and its philosophy and understands what it is to be a Coug.”

Linton walked-on the WSU cross country and track teams in 2012 after a prep career at Shorewood. She earned a scholarship for her junior and senior years at WSU. Linton scored for the Cougars three consecutive years at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships as well as at the NCAA West Region Cross Country Championships.

On the track indoors, Linton ran the school record time of 16 minutes 34.89 seconds in the 5000 meters in 2016. Outdoors, Linton broke a 12-year-old school record in the 10,000 meters as a junior with her time of 34:03.69 at the 2015 Stanford Invitational.

Her senior year Linton etched her name into the WSU all-time top ten lists in the 3000 meters with an indoor time of 9:35.49, eighth-best, and the 5000 meters with a time of 16:31.43, seventh-best. Linton scored at the 2016 Pac-12 Championships with seventh place finish in the 10k.

She graduated from WSU in May 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a Minor in Business. After graduation, Linton remained in Pullman and served as a volunteer coach for the Cougars distance program and began working on a second degree in history.

38th Annual Shoreline Invitational Track and Field meet Saturday dedicated to Frank Workman and Steve Pouley

Thursday, April 27, 2017

the boys 800. Photo by Corey Rainboth at 2016 Invitational

Close to 1,000 athletes from 73 schools are set to compete in largest all-boys track invite in the NW on Saturday, April 29, 2017 starting at noon at Shoreline Stadium, N 185th and 5th NE.

Shoreline Stadium will again host many of the best Boys Track and Field teams and individuals from around the state in the 38th Annual Shoreline Invitational.

Field events are scheduled to begin at 12pm, while the first running event is slated for 1pm. Over 1,000 athletes from 73 schools are expected in the biggest all-boys invitational in the Northwest.

This year’s meet is celebrated as the 38th annual meet. The meet first began in 1974 and continued through 1982. With the closing of Shoreline High School, the meet shut down from 1983-1988. In 1989, the meet started up again under the name Thunderbird Invitational and has been going strong since. The name was changed back to Shoreline Invitational in 1994, with both Shoreline high schools (Shorecrest and Shorewood) supporting the meet.

Ticket Prices: Adults $7
Students W/ASB $5
Seniors and Children $4

Team title up for grabs: Last year, Lincoln nearly doubled up second place Bishop Blanchet by scoring 67 points to win the team title. Blanchet was second with 39. While Lincoln is not back to defend its title, a very balanced field arrives on Saturday. It should be a fun day to see who ends up with top honors. Many of last years top 10 teams return … perhaps one of them will be the winner.

Last years top 10: Lincoln (67), Bishop Blanchet (39), Inglemoor (37) Kentridge (35), O’Dea (33.5), Tahoma (30), Shorewood (26), University (23), Bonney Lake (23), University (23) and Bellingham (22).

This year Bonney Lake, Jackson and North Central seem to be the strongest on paper. We’ll see how it plays out on Saturday. Should be a fun run towards the team title.

State’s best are here: Of the 17 events that exist on the athletic.net state leader board, many of the state leaders will be in attendance on Saturday. In addition, multiple events include three or more of the state’s top 10.

The 400 and 800 may be the feature races of the day. Six of the state's top 10 will be racing in the 400, led by third ranked O’Dea product Evan Mafilas. Three of the states top five athletes in the boys 800 will square off as well with Noah Wallace (Lewis and Clark), Chris Bianchini (Glacier Peak) and home town product Devin Kirk (Shorewood) all having times under 1:54.5.

You don’t want to miss the distance races as Shoreline has a history for some record fast times and this year should be no exception.

This year's meet is dedicated to Frank Workman and Steve Pouley.

Don Dalziel, Director of Athletics for Shoreline Schools, says, "We are fortunate in the Shoreline Community to have two outstanding, dedicated announcers working at our stadiums for athletic events. Frank and Steve have been the voices heard since 2004. They are a large reason that Shoreline is able to host events each year and are especially part of the success of this track meet."

Shorecrest girls track wins 2A State title - Wurrie Njadoe is State Champ in 3 events

Monday, May 30, 2016

Shorecrest girls track State 2A Champions

The Shorecrest girls track team won their second consecutive 2A State Championship at Mt. Tahoma HS last week. The Scots (60 points) outscored Burlington-Edison (55) and Olympic (47).

Senior Wurrie Njadoe accounted for fully half the team's points this year by repeating as State Champion in the 100 and 200 Meter Dash as well as the Long Jump, while eight of her teammates pitched in for the remaining 30 points.

Sophomore Sydney Brandt took 3rd in the triple jump and ran in the 4x100 relay that took second place.

Freshman Lillian Visser was 6th in the 3200.

Freshman Lauren Block finished 8th in the 800 and was in the 4x400 meter relay that took eighth.

Wurrie's sister Ami Njadoe, a sophomore, took 7th in the 300 meter hurdles, as well as running in the 4x100, the 4x200 (3rd place), and the 4x400 relays.

Sophomore Ronna Iverson wound up 6th in the 400, as well as running a leg on the 4x100 and the 4x400.

Senior Sophia Viviano, a Gonzaga-bound soccer player, also ran in the 4x100 and the 4x200, and freshman Amanda Kagarabi was on the 4x100 team that racked up 8 points by finishing second.

Freshman Isabella Berntsen also ran a leg on the 4x400 that finished 8th.

Scots Head Coach Brandon Christensen, understandably proud of his athletes, said "When you win a state title, it's fantastic for the program. So many girls scored points and they all did great jobs, competing against the people they needed to compete against in their events to score points for us.”

He had plenty of praise for his coaching staff (Juli Van Pelt, jumps; Brad Upton, hurdles; Sheri Goodwin and Mike Osborne, distance runners; Paul Cole, pole vault; and Jacob Fraser, throws).

"We've got the best coaching staff in the state. I'd rival them with anybody. They're all dedicated and it shows in the way the kids appreciate and respond to them.”

Wurrie Njadoe poses with Frank Workman
at the 2A District meet

But the star of the show for the second consecutive year was the senior Njadoe.

Wurrie won four individual state championships last year (LJ, HJ, 100, and 200, to go along with the SC girls basketball team championship this year).

Her three individual championships this year were capped off by a record-setting long jump of 20'00.25".

It was the first time a girl had ever jumped 20' at State.

A slight tail-wind will keep her from going into the record book, but as the song says "They can't take that away from me".
