Support cancer research at Seattle Children’s Research Institute

Proceeds from doll sales go to pediatric cancer research

The Seattle Children’s Shoreline Bargain Boutique is very excited about focusing their efforts on the 2014 Cancer Awareness Campaign for Dr. Jensen’s research and the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer.

We are proud that last year each of our six Bargain Boutiques raised $2,500 to become Research Champions. This year our goal is $5,000 per store. Our campaign started October 1st and will continue through December 1st.

Seattle Children’s Research Institute is one of the nation’s top five pediatric research centers. Researchers at Seattle Children’s Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research are reprogramming the body’s infection-fighting T-cells so that they have the ability to kill cancer cells with a laser-like focus.

Dr. Jensen, pediatric cancer researcher
Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research

The approach of the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research is a transformative shift away from the debilitating side effects that surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation can have on a child’s developing mind and body.

If our cause speaks to you, please help us make our goal by making a donation at the front counter or purchase one of the dolls we have up for adoption and we will hang a yellow ribbon with your name on our awareness wall.

Salvation Army opens huge store in Shoreline with ribbon-cutting

Saturday, September 27, 2014

The band played and people gathered
to celebrate the grand opening

The Salvation Army unveiled its new Family store in Shoreline with a public dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 25, at 8:45am.

After a brief ceremony, the formal ribbon cutting was attended to by Chamber of Commerce Administrator Jan Vance, program participant Jason, Army Major Mark Nelson, and Shoreline Deputy Mayor Chris Eggen.

"Jason is a current participant at The Salvation Army Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center. Since the stores directly fund the rehabilitation center, is is our tradition to have someone currently in the program participate in any grand opening."

The Salvation Army band played, the canteen served coffee and cookies.

Shoppers received reusable bags, and door prizes.

Mark McVeety of Shoreline Community College was the first customer.

"I got some Asian spoons and serving bowls. I gave them a 5 that they said they would frame. Later in the day I bought 2 subwoofer speakers, my wife bought 3 purses, a jacket, a rug and brought a friend who bought a ton of stuff. Fun day!"

The door prizes and shopping bags (first 50 customers) continue on Saturday, 9am to 8pm.

The new store is an expanded and upgraded version of the organization’s famous thrift stores.

“This store reflects the new model of The Salvation Army’s Family stores. It is less like the old thrift stores of the past, and more like a large discount department store,” said Captain Timothy Rockey, Salvation Army officer and director of the stores in Shoreline and Seattle."

The new store, located in former Big Lots in Aurora Square, (entrance from Westminster Way) will have 20,000 sq. ft. of shopping space, with an additional area where donated items will be received, processed, and prepared for sale.

Lots of merchandise

Merchandise will be added to the floor daily. With donations being collected at the stores in Shoreline and Seattle, plus picked up at donor’s homes, there will be a steady flow of new products.

The average “life” of an item donated to The Salvation Army is between 7- 14 days and most items are sold within 48 hours of delivery to the store.
“On any given day approximately 50% of the merchandise in the store has been there for less than one week,” added Captain Rockey.

All sales benefit the Army Adult Rehabilitation Center

The Salvation Army has a long tradition of operating successful Family Stores throughout the country. Each store, including the Shoreline store and its counterpart in Seattle SODO, are operated as part of The Salvation Army’s renowned Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC). The program, with its Washington headquarters in Seattle, receives all of its operating funds from the store. It is a six-month, residential program, offered for no cost to the participants. Last year, more than 1,000 men and women participated in the program, which includes physical, emotional, spiritual and professional drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

“A new store means more product, more sales, and more people helped” explained Captain Timothy Rockey, Director of the store and the Adult Rehabilitation Program. “The sales from our new store in Shoreline, like our store in Seattle, directly impact our ability to help more men and women overcome addictions.”

Store shopping hours are 9am to 8pm Monday through Saturday. Donations will be accepted at the back of the store from 9am to 8pm Monday through Saturday. The store will be closed on Sundays.

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 when William Booth decided to take his ministry into the streets of London where it would reach the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the destitute. It is now part of the universal Christian Church, and an international organization meeting human needs in 126 countries around the globe.

The Salvation Army continues its tradition in Western Washington by serving more than 400,000 people annually, always meeting human needs without discrimination.

Among the services offered in this state are rent/ utility/ gas assistance, food pantry, clothing, disaster relief services, day care centers, summer camps, holiday assistance, services for the aging, medical facilities, shelters for battered women and children, family and career counseling, vocational training, correction services, and substance abuse rehabilitation.

Finding Treasures - and a cure for childhood cancer

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month

When her son Brandon had cancer, Kris Forth started a foundation in Brandon's name - the Brandon's Goal Foundation - to raise funds for childhood cancer research, pediatric hospice, and to support families with a child in treatment at Seattle Children's Hospital.

After Brandon lost his seven year battle at the age of 11, his family knew they needed to do more.

They started Finding Treasures for a Cure - a non-profit thrift store in Lynnwood that supports Brandon's Goal Foundation.

Finding Treasures opened 16 months ago in a small space in Lynnwood. They have now expanded and just re-opened in a much larger space.

They are kicking off their re-opening with a HUGE parking lot sale this coming weekend.

Stretch your holiday dollars at Goodwill

Wednesday, December 4, 2013

The holidays are upon us again – store shelves are stocked, holiday tunes are playing and shoppers are in search of something special. Goodwill stores across Puget Sound have holiday treasures at low prices. Shoppers will find an abundance of trees, lights, dolls, ornaments, books, toys and all the trimmings, with new merchandise stocked every day.

Holiday expenses can add up and it can be challenging to stay on budget. On average, Americans spend $700 on purchases such as gifts, meals, decorations and postage.

To get the most out of your holidays while staying within your budget, Goodwill offers these resources and suggestions for holiday shopping without sacrificing the spirit of giving.

  1. Make a budget and check it twice: Making a holiday budget before the holidays begin will help you clarify your spending capabilities and give you a clearer picture of what you can afford.  Create a list of loved ones, brainstorm a few gift ideas and write down a maximum spending amount for each person.
  2. Shop at budget friendly stores like Goodwill: Goodwill offers book collections, housewares, clothes, furniture, toys and more that will suit the needs of even your pickiest recipients and various budgets. Plus, when you shop at Goodwill, you double your benefits. Since the money you spend helps fund free job training and education for community members in need, you are giving to more than just the loved ones on your list.
  3. Get great deals on the web: Do you prefer to do your gift shopping online as you sip a delicious mug of hot chocolate and listen to your favorite holiday music? If so, then ShopGoodwill.com is the place for you! Search thousands of items and with just the click of a mouse you can make bids on one-of-a-kind finds that will be a great gift. For more ideas about shopping Goodwill online, see this website.

Save even more with weekly tag sales: All of the items in Goodwill stores are marked with a specific color tag, most based on when the item was put in the store to be sold. The color of the tag sale rotates on a weekly basis, so check the calendar to see what colors are coming up.

The Shoreline Goodwill store is located at the corner of 15th NE and NE 145th.

Bargain Corner Volunteers love meeting the public

Sunday, August 25, 2013

Volunteers at the Bargain Corner, formerly the Thrift Shop, at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center have enjoyed meeting and greeting both new and returning customers throughout the summer. With the leaves starting to change to their vibrant fall show, they are looking forward to the season change and are bringing out some lovely autumn items.

Donations are always appreciated as they help the store continue as one of the vital fundraising opportunities for the Senior Center. All proceeds from the Bargain Corner benefit the Senior Center.

Recently, several outstanding donations were received from the estate sale of long time Shoreline resident Barbara June (Pollard) Freeman. The family was happy to know that their donation will benefit the Senior Center. The shop always appreciates the donations of small household items and clothing, all of which can be brought to the Senior Center, Monday through Friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm and taken directly to the donation room across from the Bargain Corner.

For those of you who like to shop via your computer, you may find it fun to check out the store on Etsy.com. Enter Bargaincorner in the “shop find”. If you are local, all shipping charges will be reimbursed.

Judith Enich is the Volunteer Manager for Bargain Corner, with over 15 volunteers helping run the store throughout the week. Come visit: Monday through Friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm. We know you will find something waiting there just for you!

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center, 18560 1st Ave NE #1, Shoreline, 206-365-1536.

Displays have been rearranged at the Bargain Corner

The Thrift shop is now Bargain Corner, open Monday through Friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm
By Judith Enich, Manager

I have heard from many of you about the wonderful appearance of the store. I am deeply indebted to Janice Turner for all her organization and creativity. Linda Willemarck was the start of it all, and it just snowballed from there. Thanks for the two of you!!

Linda Willemarck is putting a lot of our better things on Etsy.com which has brought in several hundred dollars. She is giving all her time and profit to the center, so give her a high five when you see her! She is wonderful and has spent much time researching along with Rusty, Beth, and Elsie. My hat's off to you, ladies!

The Bargain Corner has household goods
as well as collectibles

Anyone interested in volunteering, please fill out a volunteer form and make sure they list any interests or areas of expertise. Pick up the form at the Thrift Shop (Bargain Corner) and you will be contacted.

I would also like to express my appreciation to all of the shop volunteers: to everyone, thanks for all you do and keep on doing it! You are helping keep the Senior Center in business!

Visit the etsy.com site and search for BargainCorner.

Tell your friends and neighbors about our newest fundraising effort!

Finding Treasures Thrift Shop opens with parking lot sale this weekend

Monday, June 24, 2013

Saturday and Sunday June 29th and 30th
9am – 5pm

Finding Treasures For a Cure thrift shop opens this weekend at 4114 198th St SW in Lynnwood 98036. The non-profit thrift store will support the Brandon’s Goal Foundation (BGF).

BGF supports Research at Fred Hutch, Providence Pediatric Hospice, and Family Support Program at Seattle Children’s.

11 year old Brandon passed away in 2010 after a 7 year battle with a brain tumor.  Brandon raised money for his doctors, held a lemonade stand and gave the money to other kids in the hospital.

Brandon started a toy drive for the kids in the hospital over Christmas. He and his friends delivered more than 400 toys to Seattle Children’s for all of the kids in the hospital over Christmas.

4114 198th St SW, Lynnwood WA 98036

After Brandon passed away his mom started Brandon’s Goal Foundation. The foundation has grown to become so big that she opened a thrift store with her best friend to support the foundation. Jeanne McDonald and Kris Forth now run Finding Treasures. FT is a nonprofit thrift store where you can find vintage clothing, furniture, kids clothing and more.

The grand opening this weekend will fill the parking lot with treasures for you to find from the contents of ten storage lockers - and the proceeds will go to pediatric cancer research.

Take your donations to Goodwill to create jobs

Saturday, April 20, 2013

Although the unemployment rate has decreased in recent months, many people in our community still have difficulty entering the labor market and providing for their families. Thus, the simple act of cleaning out your closets and donating to Goodwill this spring will help us help others.

Store revenues fund Goodwill’s job training and education programs, which can lead to employment and fresh starts for people without jobs. Goodwill provides career services that anyone can use to boost their chances of getting hired, including assistance in writing a résumé, job interview practice and access to job leads.

The Shoreline Goodwill is located on the corner of 15th NE and NE 145th.

Seattle Goodwill Industries is a private, nonprofit organization that has served the central and northern Puget Sound since 1923. It provides free job-training and education programs and services that help low-income and underserved people obtain the skills they need to secure employment so they may achieve economic self-sufficiency. For more information about Goodwill programs, call toll-free 1-877-GIVE4GOOD or visit the website.
