Spring cleaning helps others find jobs - decluttering advice from Goodwill

Sunday, April 7, 2013

Take Your Donations to Goodwill!

Although the unemployment rate has decreased in recent months, many people in our community still have difficulty entering the labor market and providing for their families. Thus, the simple act of cleaning out your closets and donating to Goodwill this spring will help us help others.

Store revenues fund Goodwill’s job training and education programs, which can lead to employment and fresh starts for people without jobs. Goodwill provides career services that anyone can use to boost their chances of getting hired, including assistance in writing a résumé, job interview practice and access to job leads. Find the nearest donation site here

While cleaning, use these helpful tips and techniques from Cindy Jobs, who is a Professional Organizer and owner of Organizing to Simplify

Decide on a realistic project: How much time you have to devote to the project should drive your expectations. You may not be able to organize the entire house in an afternoon, but you CAN make significant progress on those unruly kitchen cupboards.

Find an organizing buddy: Whether it’s a Professional Organizer or a supportive friend, de-cluttering and organizing is easier when you work with someone.

Take a “before” picture: When you are done with your project, you want to have a reminder of where you started and how much progress you’ve made!

Be brutally honest about what stays and what goes: When we organize and de-clutter, we need to figure out what to do with all that stuff we no longer want or need. Generally, those items get handled one of four ways: sell, give away (generally to a friend or relative), recycle or donate. Devote separate areas to place items for each category and make a decision with every item as you go.

Take an “after” photo: Congratulations on your progress! Be sure to give yourself a reminder of how far you’ve come!

Help Goodwill celebrate 90 years

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Help Goodwill Celebrate 90 Years! New website to share Goodwill stories and memories.

This year Seattle Goodwill is celebrating 90 years in Western Washington and has launched a special website to share history and memories from our local community.

Seattle Goodwill has been an integral part of our community since it was founded in 1923. Goodwill’s mission to provide free job training and education to those in need has continued to help change people’s lives for the better.

“There have been always people in our community who have faced difficult barriers to developing job skills and finding work over the past 90 years,” said Seattle Goodwill President / CEO Ken Colling. “Our 22 retail thrift stores and 10 Job Training and Education Centers have allowed us to provide free classes and support services to many people in need.  Last year we served over 6,000 people.”

In celebration of our 90th anniversary, Goodwill encourages our local community to learn more about Goodwill’s history, to share their own story or read about other community member’s stories at our 90 year website

Another Goodwill success story: Liba Meatchi from Togo

Saturday, December 22, 2012

By Katherine Boury

When Liba Meatchi came to Goodwill he was frustrated by not being able to find a good job to support his family. Originally from Togo, he lived in Italy for over ten years playing professional basketball. “I came to America because I wanted to give my daughter a better life,” Liba remembered.

Liba Meatchi learned English at Shoreline Goodwill

After he arrived in Seattle he found his lack of English skills a barrier to finding a good job. After taking classes at Shoreline Goodwill to improve his English and job search skills, he was able to acquire a good job with the Seattle Public Schools at Highland Park Elementary.

“Goodwill is a good place,” Liba said. “It helped me to have everything I have now.”

This past year Seattle Goodwill assisted almost 6,300 students with free job training and education in our 10 community job training centers, helping 700 people facing barriers to employment find jobs.

Goodwill students come from diverse backgrounds. Last year, our students represented 102 native languages and 113 countries of origin.

Senior Center Thrift Shop find makes a happy child - half a world away

Thursday, February 2, 2012

One never knows just how far-reaching an act of kindness can go.

Several months ago, a participant at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center received a special request from some friends. They are missionaries in Kosvo and they have a daughter who just turned seven years old. Little Nikol wanted a princess costume.

As it turned out, the perfect costume was found at the senior center Thrift Shop. The costume and other treats were bundled up and sent off in hopes of getting to the country before the holidays. Of course, that didn't happen, but this special package did arrive just in time for this little girl's seventh birthday! The grateful parents sent a photo of a very happy birthday girl ... and that was sent via e-mail, so got here a lot quicker than their package!

Kosvo girl as princess

You could find a treasure at the Senior Center Thrift Shop, too! Shop hours are 9:30AM to 3:30PM, Monday through Friday. Thrift Shop Volunteer Manager, Judith Enich, is looking for volunteers at this time, as well as customers. Please call the center on Mondays or Fridays and ask for Judith to see if this is a good volunteer fit for you: 206-365-1536. The Thrift Shop is a major fundraiser for the senior center.

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center is located at 18560 1st AVE NE #1, Shoreline, and is part of the Shoreline Center campus. Phone: 206-365-1536.

Clearing out stuff after Christmas

Scrabble tile jewelry
from SandisLists
We all get those presents - and sometimes we're the ones giving them. Pink dishrags with peace symbols - eyesore or whimsey - it's in the eye of the beholder.

If your eyes are not ready to behold pink dishrags on a daily basis, Goodwill has a donation bin for you. It is located behind the Goodwill store at 14500 15th Avenue NE and the hours are Monday - Saturday: 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Sunday: 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

There are pick up locations for other organizations that help people as Goodwill does.

Deseret Industries at 17935 Aurora Avenue North in Shoreline. 206-542-9447. If you have a bag or two you can leave it with a clerk at the front counter. If you have a car load, drive in from Aurora, go behind the building and back up to the loading dock.

St. Vincent de Paul used to have a truck in the Shoreline Park 'n Ride at 192nd and Aurora.

Remember that these organizations doesn't have the capacity to handle things that are torn, stained, broken, or dirty. For that, join Freecycle and confess the imperfections in your offer. Chances are your object will find someone who doesn't mind cleaning or repairing.

Freecycle North King County has almost 3,000 members.  The goal of Freecycle is to "rehome" unwanted items and keep them out of the landfill.  You offer an item to the mailing list, people tell you they want the item and you arrange for them to come pick it up.  It's almost like having someone clean your garage for you.

Be Earth-Friendly on Earth Day at Goodwill

Friday, April 23, 2010

If you haven’t thought about how you can reduce your impact on the planet, now is the perfect time. This also happens to be a time when many people begin spring cleaning. Rather than throw your stuff out, consider bringing items you no longer need to Goodwill, and you’ll be doing a great service to the environment.

While tackling those attics, basements and closets, think about the ways your stuff can be reused. For instance, you may not want that set of golf clubs or kitchen table anymore, but there’s probably someone in the community who would love to have it. Goodwill can find new homes for these items, making the organization a great place to bring clothing, books, furniture, toys, housewares and other items that still have lots of life left in them. What’s more, when you donate these items, you help Goodwill provide free job training and education programs to people in our community.

You can also be Earth-friendly by recycling items. Goodwill participates in a successful program called E-Cycle Washington. Just bring in your old televisions, computers, monitors and laptops to Goodwill’s Donation Centers, and they will be responsibly recycled, free of charge.

Goodwill is a community resource to help you reduce, reuse and recycle on Earth Day and every other day. There are two Goodwill Donation Centers in Shoreline - the store, and the donation drop-off.

Not just for Seniors - The Senior Center Thirft Shop

Monday, March 8, 2010

New or nearly new goods for kitchen, bathroom, knick-knacks, jewelry, shoes, children's items, books, magazines, art work, linens, fabric, sewing items are all available at extremely reasonable prices at the Thrift Shop at the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center. Everyone is welcome to shop at the Thrift Store - not just seniors.

Manager Judith Enich says, "We try to be a step up from other thrift stores by putting out only the best of our donations. We have many donated greeting cards for 25 cents each and a selection of more specialized cards that we sell for about .60--$1.00. We have a wide variety of very nice clothes usually selling for very low prices. We test all our small appliances to make sure they work."

The shop appreciates donations from the community. The only donations they do not accept are large furniture pieces, large appliances, and electronics.

All the workers are volunteers and new volunteers are always welcomed. There is no paid staff.

Workers pride themselves on being friendly and helping customers find items if they wish help. They will hold items for people if they will be picked up in a reasonable time. They also take requests for items and let customers know when or if the item is donated.

The shop has a new sale almost every week for 50% off. For example, one week all slacks, pants, and jeans were 50% off.

All monies from the Thrift Shop go directly to the adjoining Senior Center to help support their programs.

The Thrift Shop is located in the building just south of the Shoreline Conference Center at 185th and 1st NE. They are in the west end of the Senior Center building, with entrances to the west, the south, and through the Senior Center. There is generous parking in front of the building.
