Third Place Commons Board Member Spotlight: Norman Lieberman

Wednesday, April 19, 2023

The vision of Third Place Commons is to be a vibrant, safe, welcoming space open to everyone. When folks join together at the Commons, we’re reminded how much we all want to be together, learning from our neighbors, celebrating together, creating real community in real space.

Third Place Commons builds real-world community by hosting free in-person and Zoom events including civic, arts, educational, and personal enrichment programs. Among these are numerous stand-alone events throughout the year, and many weekly and monthly recurring events – including live music with an open dance floor every Friday and Saturday night.

Third Place Commons also proudly presents its flagship program, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, from Mother’s Day to mid-October each year.

Board Member Norman Lieberman
Third Place Commons Board Member Spotlight: Norman Lieberman

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the organization achieves its community building and enrichment goals with the help and vision of a vibrant, invested Board of Directors who share a passion for fostering and strengthening our shared Commons community.

One such volunteer is longtime board member Norman Lieberman. We asked Norman three questions about his experience in our community and on the board. Here’s what he said:

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ON THE THIRD PLACE COMMONS BOARD?

A: Eight years.

Q: TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR FAMILY, AND YOUR LIFE IN LAKE FOREST PARK

A: My husband Joe and I moved here ten years ago from Maryland. Our daughter Rose was just starting college in DC so we had an empty nest and a sudden opportunity. Joe was offered a senior position at UW and I was approaching retirement. Lake Forest Park turned out to be the perfect choice as a place to live and begin a new adventure. We have made a lot of new friends here! (So much for the myth of the Seattle Freeze - LOL.)

I've gotten very involved in a number of not-for-profit organizations. My longest tenure in any of them has been the Third Place Commons Board. As an organization, we provide so much for the community in a variety of ways, from the weekend dances to the learning opportunities to the farmers market, each of which serves different and overlapping segments of the community. Our impact is extensive, and satisfying for those of us who serve in leadership positions.

Q: FAVORITE COMMONS MEMORY (e.g., specific experience, program, or event)?

A: As Chair of the Annual Fundraising Breakfast for several years, I loved the six months of planning and the final event. This was SO much fun, every year! It broke my heart, with the advent of COVID, to have to cancel the Breakfast the night before the actual event several years ago as the pandemic shut down everything. But this year we are back - in person and better than ever! Be sure to join us on Thursday, May 25 to celebrate Third Place Commons and all we do! Yay!

Third Place Commons, your community gathering space, hosts hundreds of free events each year as well as the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market. And it’s only possible with help from folks like you!

Get your tickets here for the “Back in the Commons Again” Annual Community Breakfast on Thursday, May 25th at 7am. Read more here.

If you’re interested in volunteering with Third Place Commons and the LFP Farmers Market, or in the possibility of board service, contact Executive Director Amy Whittenburg director@thirdplacecommons.org

See you at the Commons!

Saturday, December 3, 2022

Community dancing returns to Third Place Commons

Tuesday, April 26, 2022

There’s big news at Third Place Commons. While community transmission remains moderate and controlled, Third Place Commons has updated the community dancing policy to allow dancing once again during the Weekend Music program.

This is especially exciting given the great lineup of highly danceable bands coming up at Third Place Commons including:
  • 4/29 – Left Turn on Blue (R/B, soul, pop, rock ‘n’ roll)
  • 4/30 – Gin Creek (blues)
  • 5/6 – Ranger & the Re-Arrangers (hot club swing)
  • 5/7 - Kim Maguire Trio (swing and Latin)
  • 5/13 – Michele D’Amour & the Love Dealers (funky blues)
  • 5/14 – Purple Passion Swing Band (Swing, Big Band)

More great music continues throughout May and into the summer. So check the Third Place Commons online calendar for all the details.

The return of dancing is great news. However, in light of the ongoing pandemic and still increasing infection rates, members of the public are encouraged to take precautions to keep our community and Third Place Commons staff members safe.

Dancing can be a high exertion activity that causes heavy breathing and in close proximity to others when the dance floor is crowded. In addition, asymptomatic spread of COVID is common, especially among vaccinated individuals. Other activities like changing partners increase potential exposure further.

Because many people in our community are in vulnerable populations, if you would like to dance, please consider wearing a mask to protect others and to minimize your own potential exposure. Especially when there are large crowds in the space.

Another beloved Third Place Commons program is about to return as well, of course, and that’s the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market. As always, the LFP Farmers Market opens for the season on Mother’s Day. So save the date for May 8 and be sure to hit the market for your Mother’s Day flowers and so much more! And if you love the music, dancing, the farmers market, or any of the other community events that Third Place Commons presents each year, you can help support it all with a GiveBIG gift this year.

GiveBIG officially takes place on May 3rd and 4th, but you can make your gift right now to support this vital community resource.

Third Place Commons – a community supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization – has been building real community in the heart of Lake Forest Park for over 20 years. In addition to presenting its largest program, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, Third Place Commons now also fosters real community in digital space with TPC At Home programs.

Third Place Commons celebrated as a “Garden of Democracy”

Thursday, March 24, 2022

Emcee and Third Place Commons board member Matt Broweleit

Earlier this month, a community of friends and neighbors gathered in virtual space for the Third Place Commons Rebuilding Community Annual Celebration and Fundraiser.

The program featured videos of bands from the Weekend Music program as well as a joyful look at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market. A variety of speakers, led by emcee and Third Place Commons board member Matt Broweleit, shared some fun and impressive tidbits including:
  • Third Place Commons hosted 210 virtual events in 2021.
  • When Third Place Commons first reopened for programming last year, the first live, in-person performance onstage was the Milner Family Fiddles in August. That was followed by Rainy City Riff Raff with an “outdoor concert” that got rained out and moved inside in September, and then the relaunch of Weekend Music with Gin Creek Blues at the start of October.
  • Third Place Commons distributed over $26,000 in food assistance support to local, low-income neighbors at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market.
  • Over $5,000 of that food support is though the Market Bucks Food Assistance program, which is funded by local individual donors and community organizations.

Keynote speaker Eric Liu, co-founder and CEO of Citizen University

The program highlight was speaker Eric Liu, the co-founder and CEO of Citizen University, who inspired everyone by exploring the question, “How shall we live together?” Liu framed our way forward through three things: civic faith, civic fellowship, and civic future.

Liu identified civic faith as our choice to engage with our community in places like Third Place Commons with the belief and understanding that through engagement, we strengthen the very foundations of democracy.

“Democracy works only when enough of us believe democracy works,” Liu said. “We have to believe in each other. We have to believe in the possibility that living together can work. And then we have to redeem that belief by actually showing it, by actually making it happen.”

As Liu noted, Third Place Commons is a place where people choose every day to “take a leap of civic faith” and join in. And as we all join in, we build civic fellowship.

Civic fellowship is how Liu described the ways we see ourselves as “contributor[s] to a community” and as “woven into the fate and fabric of this place.”

Liu noted that “every program at Third Place Commons is an absolute seedbed for the flowering of fellowship… turning strangers into friends, turning friends into fellows.”

Liu also commented on the fact that Third Place Commons has been doing this work for 22 years, observing, “It has been a generation that this experiment has been flowering and taking root in this particular garden of democracy.”

However, Liu also pointed out that gardens require gardeners

“What we’re here to do it to make sure that another generation of people get to enjoy the fruits and the benefits of Third Place Commons. And so every dollar you invest in this institution is not just about the now, it’s about the future.”

Although Liu acknowledged there were a lot of reasons to feel pessimistic about things happening in our country and around the world, he pointed to Third Place Commons as “one of the brightest guiding lights you can imagine” and “a beacon of hope.”

“It’s incumbent upon us to hold up this bright light that’s called Third Place Commons and remind each other, and remind the world, and show the world, what’s possible when you invest for the long haul. When you take that cyclical responsibility for sustaining this garden of democracy,” Liu said.

The Rebuilding Community event was a fundraiser to raise vital support for Third Place Commons programs, including live music, community events on the stage and in the Commons, virtual events and meet-ups, and the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market.

If you missed the event, you can still show your support for Third Place Commons and the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market. Make a gift here.

Civic Engagement and Getting Involved – This Week at Third Place Commons

Thursday, February 24, 2022

With the Third Place Commons Rebuilding Community Annual Celebration and Fundraiser just around the corner on March 5, 2022 two building blocks of community are taking center stage this week.

If Building Block #1 is a set of guiding principles, and Building Block #2 is gathering space, then Building Blocks #3 and #4 go hand in hand in fostering a solid foundation for a strong community.

Building Block #3: Civic Engagement

The strength of a community depends, in part, on folks plugging into the issues that shape their daily lives. From local city council meetings to federal legislation and elections, the voices of engaged citizens can and do transform communities in ways large and small. The greater the gathering of voices, the greater the transformation. Indeed, in a democratic society, those voices are the very foundation of our community.

Building Block #4: Getting Involved

Whether you want to change the world or just make new friends, getting involved is essential. The same is true if you’re joining groups of folks with common interests (like book or movie clubs or a foreign language group), participating in activities that amuse and entertain (like attending a live music performance), or attending civic events (like local city forums and Civic Saturdays) as an engaged citizen. Getting involved with your community is where the rubber meets the road.

This Saturday, February 26th at 10am, these two components fall into perfect harmony with Civic Saturday. Join in to connect with others in civic community and reflect on what it means to live as a citizen in today's American society. Civic Saturday is a growing, nonpartisan, national initiative, with our gathering led by local Civic Saturday fellows Erika Olson and Caroline Sayre.

Meet one another, enjoy music, poetry, and readings, and talk informally in small groups. Register here for Civic Saturday.

By the way, Civic Saturday is an initiative of Citizen University, whose co-founder and CEO Eric Liu will be the featured speaker at Third Place Commons Rebuilding Community Celebration and Fundraiser on Saturday, March 5th.

You won’t want to miss hearing from this inspiring and acclaimed author, speaker, and thought leader. Get your Rebuilding Community tickets here.

Making Space for Community at Third Place Commons

Tuesday, February 15, 2022

This week, Third Place Commons continues to explore the building blocks of community in the lead-up to the Rebuilding Community Annual Celebration and Fundraiser on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 5pm.

There are many factors that go into fostering a strong, vibrant community at any time, especially when rebuilding community that’s been fractured by the challenges of a global pandemic. So where do we start?

If building block #1 is Guiding Principles, then perhaps #2 would be an all-important gathering space.

Building Block #2: Gathering Space

For a community to grow strong, it needs the space in which to gather and build together.

At Third Place Commons, gathering space is a foundational element. The Commons space is always open for friends and family to visit, eat, read, listen to music, or plan important community initiatives. The stage and space are likewise available to partners for no-cost programming so that community can gather and engage through a wide range of live events when it’s safe to do so.

And, of course, Third Place Commons provides the space where neighbors and vendors connect and support each other at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market.

In addition, since the pandemic, the Commons has also provided a virtual space where community can safely stay connected through weekly and monthly groups and clubs as well as stand-alone special programs like city forums, go green programs, and Civic Saturdays.

How can you use the gathering spaces available to you to foster a stronger community?

Share your thoughts with friends, start a dialogue, and bring your ideas to the conversation for the Rebuilding Community event on March 5th.

Third Place Commons explores the Building Blocks of Community

Thursday, February 10, 2022

In preparation for the Rebuilding Community Annual Celebration and Fundraiser on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 5pm, Third Place Commons invites you to join in a conversation about how we can build a stronger community together.

The mission of Third Place Commons is to foster and enrich real community in real space. But in an ongoing pandemic, when community is more physically distanced and fractured than ever before, how do we rebuild?

What are the building blocks of community?

There are, no doubt, as many answers to this question as there are people to answer it. Third Place Commons is digging into this question this month and invites you to share your ideas as well.

While there are many building blocks to community, we have to start somewhere, and at Third Place Commons, the work begins with guiding principles.

Building Block #1: Guiding Principles

To create a sense of community where everyone truly feels welcome, a set of shared principles can be a meaningful start. It doesn’t mean every individual agrees on every issue, but that the members of the community find common ground on which to build.

Third Place Commons’ guiding principles are the organization’s core values, established to guide all the work that the Commons does. These are:
  • Accessibility
  • Community
  • Inclusivity
  • Connection
  • Collaboration
What other guiding principles do you think are important when building community?

Share your thoughts with friends, start a dialogue, and bring your ideas to the conversation for the Rebuilding Community event on March 5th.

Unfortunately, dancing – a high contact, high exertion, and close proximity activity – is still not something that can be safely managed in the Commons space. Therefore, dancing is not permitted at this time in the interest of public health and for the protection of Commons staff and performers.

But great music is still great music, and this line-up can’t be beat! So mark your calendar and make a plan to join the fun every weekend through December 18th!

Check the Third Place Commons online calendar for more info on the December bands, as well as other upcoming events including the LFP Holiday Farmers Market and Crafts Fair on Sunday, December 19th!

Watch the Lake Forest Park Prop 1 and City Council Candidate Forums On-Demand

Need help making your decisions on this year’s ballot? Third Place Commons can help.

On Thursday, October 7, 2021 Third Place Commons presented the Lake Forest Park City Council Candidate Forum. All seven candidates for four positions participated and shared their thoughts on a wide variety of topics including Prop 1, increasing affordable housing options, and the future of town center.

On Saturday, October 16th, Third Place Commons presented the Lake Forest Park Prop 1 Pro and Con Forum. The forum included presentations by both the Pro Committee (“Yes for Sidewalks, Safe Streets and Parks Campaign”) and the Con Committee (“Neighbors for a Sustainable LFP"), after which both sides fielded questions from the opposing side and the audience.

Both events were presented in partnership with the League of Women Voters to bring these important nonpartisan events to our local community.

Third Place Commons also gratefully acknowledges community members Mike Dee of the Lake Forest Park Citizens’ Commission and Anne Stadler for their help in putting together the Prop 1 Forum, which would not have happened without their support and partnership.

Now both forums are available to watch on demand on the Third Place Commons YouTube channel. Watch the forums here.

LFP Prop 1 and City Council Candidate Forums presented by Third Place Commons

Wednesday, October 6, 2021

If you live in Lake Forest Park, don’t cast your ballots this fall without tuning into two important election related forums presented by Third Place Commons.

On Thursday, October 7, 2021 at 7pm, Third Place Commons presents the Lake Forest Park City Council Candidate Forum via Zoom

Hear from the candidates about their positions on critical issues of importance to you and your community.

The forum will be moderated by a representative from an outside chapter of the nonpartisan League of Women Voters.

The forum will follow their standardized format allowing for each candidate to answer each question in timed responses.

The moderator will ask both questions prepared in advance, based on current issues facing the community, and those solicited in writing from the audience during the event.

All candidates for the city council have agreed to participate. Registration is required to attend. Register here for the Lake Forest Park City Council Candidate Forum.

Then, on Saturday, October 16th at 1pm, Third Place Commons presents a second nonpartisan forum, the Lake Forest Park Prop 1 Pros and Cons Forum, also via Zoom.

Explore the intentions and ramifications of Prop 1 before casting your ballot. The ballot measure will be presented, followed by commentary from both the Pro side and the Con side, after which written audience questions will be fielded and discussed for the remainder of the time.

Register here for the Lake Forest Park Prop 1 Pros and Cons Forum.
