Saturday's outdoor concert moves indoors to Third Place Commons

Thursday, September 16, 2021

Unfortunately, our rainy city decided that this weekend was the perfect time to bring back the rain. So we can't hold our outdoor concert after all on Saturday.

The good news is that we're moving it indoor to the Third Place Commons stage instead.

With an indoor event, a few things do change. Masks are required, there's **no dancing** right now, and we do encourage you to maintain social distance. But the music will still be great and that's what it's all about!

The Third Place Commons stage is on the upper level of Town Center at the intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way in Lake Forest Park.

The concert is free.

The Summer of Music heats up with Third Place Commons

Wednesday, July 21, 2021

The Third Place Commons Summer of Music is in full swing and heating up with the first of three streaming concerts this weekend.

On Sunday, July 25th at at 12:00 noon, tune in for a Milner Family Fiddles mini-concert streaming on the Third Place Commons YouTube channel.

Recorded inside Third Place Commons during full COVID restrictions, this performance from the Milner Family Fiddles represents a sweet, sweet return to beloved Commons music programming. Local favorites the Milners have long played the Commons stage every other month with their feel-good, rootsy Americana that never fails to elicit a smile.

Whether you’re digging in the garden, working around the house, reading a good book on the patio, or getting ready to head to the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, the Milners will provide the perfect musical backdrop.

So be sure to tune in for this streaming concert for some warm-hearted musical cheer to start your Sunday afternoon off right - and to get you ready for their big return IN PERSON to the stage next month on August 15th!

Mark your calendar now, and this coming Sunday at noon, watch the Milner Family Fiddles here.

Of course, there’s plenty more where that came from. Music is also infusing every discussion in the TPC Movie Club and the Commons Community Book Club this summer, including tonight’s book club discussion of The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce.

In August, the book club will be discussing the Pulitzer Prize winning A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan while the TPC Movie Club will be discussing the six-time Oscar winner La La Land.

In fact, even this year’s LFP READS selection features music! The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune is the bestselling tale of a by-the-book social worker sent to investigate an orphanage full of magical children on an island full of secrets – including the young Antichrist who just happens to have a penchant for the music of dead people.

While Third Place Commons usually welcomes the annual READS event to the stage, that’s not possible this year. So the good folks at Third Place Books will be hosting the event online on Tuesday, July 27th at 7 PM. Read more here and be sure to pick up this delightful, witty, and heartwarming book.

From books and movies about music to streaming concerts to the return of live, in-person performances, Third Place Commons is celebrating the joy of music at every turn.

Crafts Day at the LFP Farmers Market and more coming up from Third Place Commons

Tuesday, July 6, 2021

Mark your calendars and make a plan to head to the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market on Sunday, July 18, 2021 from 10am to 2pm, for Crafts Day at the Market!

This beloved annual tradition took the year off in 2020 due to the pandemic, but the great news is that it’s back with bells on in 2021.

You won’t want to miss this one day only opportunity to shop for jewelry, artwork, fabric arts, handmade cards and gifts, garden art, and more!

And in case you haven’t heard, thanks to updated requirements from the health department, masks are no longer required at the market for vaccinated individuals!

The health department does still ask all unvaccinated and partially vaccinated folks to wear their masks at the market for your safety and the safety of others.

But if you’re vaccinated, and feeling ready, you can leave your mask at home when you’re shopping in the beautiful, fresh air setting of the market. (Though masks certainly remain welcome for anyone who prefers to keep it on.)

Also on the agenda this summer is Third Place Commons’ “Summer of Music” including a hybrid of online and in-person programs all celebrating the joy of music.

Coming up on Tuesday, July 13th at 7:30pm, the TPC Movie Club will be discussing the Oscar and Grammy winning 2018 release “A Star Is Born.” Stream it ahead and then join the club to join the conversation on the 13th.

And on Wednesday, July 21st at 5pm, the Commons Community Book Club will be discussing the joyful, quirky, and ultimately uplifting novel “The Music Shop” by Rachel Joyce. The Boston Globe says, “Love, friendship, and especially the healing powers of music all rise together into a triumphant crescendo. . . . This lovely novel is as satisfying and enlightening as the music that suffuses its every page."

This short and sweet gem is a quick read, so there’s still plenty of time to breeze through it and join the conversation. Register here for the Commons Community Book Club.

Stay tuned for more details coming soon on other music themed programs including streaming concerts, a big outdoor concert, and finally the return of indoor music to Third Place Commons. Yippee!

And don’t forget that you can show your support for all this and more when you stop in for dinner at the Lake Forest Bar and Grill for “Third Place Commons Benefit Night” on Wednesday, July 7th from 5-9pm.

Twenty percent of proceeds from the evening will be donated to Third Place Commons and two of its key programs, the LFP Farmers Market and the Market Bucks food assistance program. So rally your friends and family and head out Wednesday night to eat out for a good cause!

Can’t make it to dinner? You can always make a donation online here.

Green Gardening with Master Gardener Julie Yasny on Saturday, June 19th

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

Merge your love of the planet with your love of gardening in this informative session!

This coming Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 11am, Third Place Commons is proud to present “Green Gardening with Master Gardener Julie Yasny.”

Register now to join this free, Zoom program in which Yasny will field your questions and share tips and tricks for keeping your garden beautiful through environmentally friendly practices.

Register here for “Green Gardening with Master Gardener Julie Yasny.”

This program is part two in Third Place Commons’ three-part “Going Green” series, which grew out of the Climate Town Hall this past April.

You’ll also want to mark your calendar and sign-up today for the third and final part in the series, “Keep the Cycle Turning: How to be a Savvy Recycler,” presented by Republic Services Recycling Coordinator, Natalie Caulkins.

Caulkins presented during the Climate Town Hall and also hosted a breakout room during the group conversations, and both sessions were packed with folks eager to learn more about recycling properly. What can and can’t actually be recycled? Does it actually matter if your recyclables are “empty, clean, and dry”? Are you guilty of “wish-cycling” and what impact does that have?

Well-intentioned recyclers make a lot of costly mistakes. But we can help ensure that more things are successfully recycled when we better understand what can and can’t be recycled – and why.

So make a plan to join the conversation on June 30th at 7pm. Register here to “Keep the Cycle Turning: How to be a Savvy Recycler.”

Learning from the Past: The Bainbridge Island Origins of Japanese American Exclusion

Monday, June 14, 2021

In March of 1942, 227 Japanese Americans were forcibly removed from their homes on Bainbridge Island by the US Army. Starting with this small community, a national strategy began, with more than 120,000 Japanese American men, women, and children forcibly removed and incarcerated during World War II.

On Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 7pm, join Third Place Commons for “Let It Not Happen Again: Lessons of the Japanese American Exclusion” to learn more about this critical juncture in our local history.

During the program, speaker Clarence Moriwaki will share the story of Bainbridge Island— the origin point of the Japanese American exclusion — to provide a human, historical account of this national tragedy, and to ask the question, “Are there parallels to what’s happening in America now?”

Moriwaki uses historical images, including historical and current propaganda, to explore the fear, racism, and failure of political leadership that led to these unconstitutional actions during World War II, and why we must not let it happen again.

Moriwaki is the president of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community and a founder and former president of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association. Moriwaki has written guest editorials on the subject that have been published nationwide. Moriwaki has served as a spokesperson for administrations including the Clinton Administration, the Office of the Governor, and Congressman Jay Inslee.

Register here for this free, Zoom program.

This program is part of Third Place Commons’ ongoing TPC At Home virtual programming, providing opportunities both to learn and to engage with your community. Coming up are parts two and three of the Commons’ “Going Green” series. On Saturday, June 19th at 11am, it’s “Green Gardening with Master Gardener Julie Yasny,” and on Wednesday, June 30th at 7pm, tune in for “Keep the Cycle Turning: How to be a Savvy Recycler.”

Lake Forest Park Farmers Market opens Sunday May 9

Thursday, April 29, 2021

Great news, market season is almost here! The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market Opening Day is Sunday, May 9, 2021 from 10am to 2pm.

That’s right, the market will open as always on Mother’s Day, just in time for you to pick-up glorious bouquets of spring flowers for all the moms in your life.

You’ll also get to shop your favorite vendors for fresh and delicious goodies of all kinds. From Garden Treasures and Bautista to Wilson Fish and Doll House Baked Goods, there will be something fresh and amazing at every turn. (More details on the vendor line-up coming soon.)

You may recall that last season, the market underwent a number of changes to ensure the safety of everyone – shoppers, vendors, volunteers, and staff alike.

As things begin to open up, the health department has permitted some changes that translate to great news for you. For instance, the market will be permitted more booths and more shoppers this year, which means fewer lines and more of your favorite vendors at the market. Hooray!

However, consistent with health department requirements, everyone will still be required to wear masks and to maintain physical distances of 6’ or more, and there will still be a single, designated entry.

Shoppers are also still requested to shop quickly and send only one person per household to do the shopping so that as many people as possible can move quickly, easily, and safely through the market.

In addition, many vendors will still be offering pre-orders to speed up your visits to the market, so check the Third Place Commons website for details. (A list will be uploaded and updated as details become available.)

The LFP Farmers Market is a program of Third Place Commons and it’s your support that makes it possible. If you love the LFP Farmers Market and Third Place Commons, please consider making a gift for GiveBIG here.

For the moment, the group focuses on critically acclaimed films from recent years that are widely available to stream so that everyone can easily watch them from home prior to the meeting. In the future, the club may switch to new releases in the theatres, but not until the current public health crisis passes.

At the next meeting on April 13th, the group will discuss 1917, which was nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Motion Picture and Best Director, and won three! It’s the story of two British soldiers during World War I who receive seemingly impossible orders. In a race against time, they must cross over into enemy territory to deliver a message that could potentially save 1,600 of their fellow comrades -- including the brother of one of the soldiers.

This gripping, nail-biter of a film is both powerful and visually dazzling and will keep you breathless till the end. So stream it now and join the club to discuss!

Currently, both groups meet via Zoom and are expected to continue online for the foreseeable future.

Third Place Commons Celebrates 21 Years of Community with Friends and Neighbors

Sunday, March 21, 2021

On Saturday, March 6, 2021 a community of neighbors gathered online to laugh, visit with friends, and celebrate the 21st birthday of Third Place Commons at the Finally 21 Online Party.

Guests enjoyed a virtual “return to the Commons” featuring special performances recorded last month inside Third Place Commons (following COVID safety protocols).

Among a number of musical performances, guests were also treated to a lively, cheerful Hula O Lehualani performance by a student of Krista Espiritu, who traditionally brings her students for a popular, annual showcase at the Commons.

You can enjoy this wonderful performance here.

Jazz pianist Ken Kassover, who has performed at Third Place Commons with a number of different bands, generously contributed his time and talent to present a mini-concert that opened the event and will be streamed online this spring.

During the program, the Commons shared sneak previews from two other upcoming mini-concerts, one by the Milner Family Fiddles and the other by the Honky Tonk Sweethearts. Both mini-concerts will also be streamed as online programs later this spring. Stay tuned for details.

Guests also waxed nostalgic after enjoying Third Place Commons’ 20th anniversary video and remembering everything we all love so much about our Commons community and the farmers market. Watch the video here.

Third Place Commons is actively planning to reopen as soon as it’s safe, and in the meantime continues to provide great, free programming online under the TPC At Home umbrella. Plans are also underway for the opening of the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market season as usual on Mother’s Day, May 9th.

The Finally 21 Party was a benefit to raise vital funds for Third Place Commons and the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market in lieu of the traditional annual community breakfast. The Commons Board of Directors sends a big THANK YOU to everyone who joined the party and gave so generously.

If you missed the party, but would like to make a gift to support these vital community assets, you can give online here.

Third Place Commons asks “What’s Age Got to Do with It?” on March 20

Saturday, March 13, 2021

“You look good for your age.” “You’re too young to understand.”

Third Place Commons invites you to join in an interactive conversation entitled “What’s Age Got to Do with It?” about aging, ageism, and how we can embrace our age in every stage of life.

This free event will take place via Zoom on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 1pm.

In employment decisions, family discussions, medical care, and even in birthday cards, assumptions about being “over the hill” or “a lazy kid” are common. What do you wish society would stop saying about your generation? How can we talk about age and aging in a more positive, affirming way?

In this interactive and fun talk, Dori Gillam welcomes individuals from every generation to explore how we can begin valuing all ages—including our own.

Comic Book Historian tackles superheroes and the power of representation on Wed, 2/24

Tuesday, February 23, 2021

Representation matters. For nearly a century, from Wonder Woman to Black Panther, superheroes have been reflecting the challenges of our times and showing us our potential. Their cultural relevance and influence is powerful.

On Wednesday, February 24th at 7pm, join Third Place Commons to explore the impact and significance of these potent images and stories in Comic Book Reality: Superheroes and the Power of Representation. Teens welcome!

Comic Book Historian Andrew Wahl
Presenter T. Andrew Wahl is a journalist who has worked as an editor and editorial cartoonist.

Wahl is a lifelong comic book aficionado, focusing on the Bronze Age (1975-85) of the American comic book.

Wahl studied comic books as a part of his MA in the humanities at Fort Hays State University.

He currently teaches journalism at Everett Community College.

As a comic book historian, Wahl has spent years charting the evolution of comic books and superheroes as reflections of their times, as well as their influence on culture.

And as comic book superheroes have diversified, he has also observed a noticeable evolution in their audiences.

As Wahl explained in the Bainbridge Island Review
“When I was a kid, if you went to a comic book convention … it was probably 95 percent white men in the room. If a woman walked in the room it was actually like a unicorn coming in, we’d all kind of stop and stare.
"And now if you go to Emerald City [Comic Con] in Seattle it’s about 50-50 in terms of the gender mix; people from all walks of life, all different kinds of sexual identity backgrounds, race and ethnicity backgrounds. It’s just a much more encompassing community now and all of that has been reflected in the stories themselves.”

From Captain America (born to fight Hitler and the Nazis) to Wonder Woman (created to foster feminism and peace) to the X-Men (who gained their powers in a metaphorical civil rights movement), Wahl explores the significance of characters who are considerably more than kids’ stuff.

So whether you’re a lifelong comics fan or have just a passing interest in the latest Marvel blockbuster, tune in Wednesday at 7pm to find out what you’ve been missing.

REGISTER HERE for Comic Book Reality: Superheroes and the Power of Representation.
