The LFP Farmers Market’s Sweet 16 - Take the Market Challenge

Sunday, February 21, 2021

Third Place Commons is turning 21 (finally!) this year, and the party is on! In fact, the Third Place Commons Finally 21 Online Party and Fundraiser is just around the corner on Saturday, March 6th at 5 PM. But, of course, Third Place Commons isn’t the only one enjoying a big birthday this year.

The Commons’ largest program, The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market opened in 2005, which means the market is celebrating its Sweet 16 this year! Two big birthdays, two great reasons for a party. And with the big event coming up, it’s time for Challenge #3 in the weekly Finally 21 scavenger h

Each Sunday during (non-COVID) market season, the LFP Farmers Market hosts over 40 vendors and around 7,000 shoppers per week. The market means a lot to a lot of people, and we all have our market favorites.

So what do you love most about the LFP Farmers Market? Think of your favorite thing to get from the market, or your favorite vendor. What do you love and why? You'll have an opportunity to share during the celebration!

By the way, if you missed the first two challenges, you can take the Memory Challenge here and the Music Challenge here.

Third Place Commons remains a busy hub of community through these challenging times thanks to TPC at Home programs like the upcoming Comic Book Reality: Superheroes and the Power of Representation on Wednesday, Feb. 24th. And the farmers market will open on schedule again this coming Mother’s Day, as it has every year since 2005.

Your support is the key to maintaining community in these isolating times, and critical to sustain Third Place Commons until the indoor space can once again reopen for everyone

Help raise vital funds to support Third Place Commons and the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market. Get your party passes for the big event here.

Third Place Commons gives thanks to sponsors Republic Services and the Town Center at Lake Forest Park (owned by Merlone Geier Partners), whose ongoing partnership and support are greatly appreciated.

Third Place Commons, a community supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, has been building real community in the heart of Lake Forest Park for over 20 years.

Remember when you were 21? Take the Finally 21 Music Challenge

Tuesday, February 16, 2021

Remember when you were 21? Take the Finally 21 Music Challenge!

The Third Place Commons Finally 21 Online Party and Fundraiser is coming up on Saturday, March 6th, and the weekly scavenger hunt continues with Challenge #2.

Challenge #2: THE MUSIC CHALLENGE

Third Place Commons is finally 21! And to celebrate a 21st birthday, you’ve got to have some great music. That’s where you come in! Think back to when you turned 21. Did you have a favorite song? Hunt down your favorite song, or one that topped the charts the year you turned 21. Send the song title and artist to events@thirdplacecommons.org to add it to the "Finally 21" Playlist.

The Finally 21 Playlist will be shared in the lead-up to the big event to get you in the party spirit!

Music has always been a big part of the programming at Third Place Commons, so naturally it’s got to be a big part of the Finally 21 Party. So be sure to join the festivities on March 6th to “return to the Commons” with music and dance from some Commons favorites.

Help raise vital funds to support Third Place Commons and the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market. Get your party passes here.

And don’t forget to mention your Party Room preferences! Early in the program, folks will get a chance to visit with friends and catch up, plus share the items you’ve scavenged in the weekly challenges. Want to hang out with anyone in particular during social time? Be sure to indicate who on the check-out page.

Or if you’re all talked out and would prefer to chill quietly while enjoying a few short videos, just request the “quiet room.” Whether you’re aching to chat with friends or just looking to relax, Third Place Commons is happy to accommodate. Either way, you’ll return to the festivities at the same time to enjoy the rest of the program with everyone else.

From the Commons to the LFP Farmers Market to your own personal walk down memory lane, this scavenger hunt will prepare you well for the festivities to come.

Challenge #1: THE MEMORY CHALLENGE

Find something that evokes a fond memory of Third Place Commons. Perhaps it's your LFP Farmers Market shirt (don't have one? Order it here), a picture from a performance, or a selfie of you at the Commons.

Maybe it’s something from the kids’ costumes while trick-or-treating at the Commons, a game you played with friends, or an artwork you made while hanging out? Whatever it is, you’ll have an opportunity to share during the party!

Tickets come in two options. Standard Party Passes are $25 per person, or you can grab a Party Hearty Pass for $50 per person and get your choice of a Commons or farmers market t-shirt (two color choices for each) along with your party access. (Most options come in sizes XS to 4XL.)

Plus, if you order your Party Hearty Passes by this Friday, February 12th, you’ll get your shirts in time to show them off at the big event! So get your party passes here. (Visit the event page to see the shirt option details.)

Third Place Commons explores superheroes and the Power of Representation on Wed, Feb 24

Friday, February 5, 2021

Representation matters. When we see ourselves reflected in stories and media, we see our possibilities. From Wonder Woman to Black Panther, comics (and their current counterpart, superhero movies) have played no small role in creating powerful visions of our potential.

On Wednesday, February 24th at 7pm, Third Place Commons invites you to explore the impact and significance of these potent images and stories in “Comic Book Reality: Superheroes an the Power of Representation.”

Since their debut in the 1930s, comic books have been a regular part of our pop-culture landscape. While often dismissed as escapist entertainment, these pulp treasures also provide a fascinating lens through which to view our nation’s past, present, and potential future.

In this interactive presentation, journalist and educator T. Andrew Wahl explores how everything from social movements to business concerns to changing demographics have shaped the reality seen in the pages of comics. Drawing from comics including Black Panther, Wonder Woman, Captain America, and others, Wahl shows how four-color heroes aren’t merely confined to paper — they shape the world we live in.

This program is appropriate for adults and teens and is the latest in the Third Place Commons TPC At Home series of virtual events.

REGISTER HERE for Comic Book Reality: Superheroes and the Power of Representation. And bring your teens!

New clubs just for you! Talk movies and books with Third Place Commons

Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Third Place Commons is excited to announce the start of two new monthly clubs, the TPC Movie Club and the Commons Community Book Club. And you’re invited to join in the fun!

Both clubs will meet in virtual space until it’s once again safe to meet in person, with the TPC Movie Club meeting on the second Tuesday of each month from 7:30-9pm while the Commons Community Book Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 5-6:30pm. Get the links to join in on the Third Place Commons online calendar.

The first movie club meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 13 when the group will discuss “If Beale Street Could Talk,” a gorgeous film filled with powerful performances including an Oscar winning turn from Regina King. Beale Street is a heartfelt love story, based on the James Baldwin novel, that movingly explores themes of racial injustice and the power of family devotion.

Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 95% and says, “’If Beale Street Could Talk’ honors its source material with a beautifully filmed adaptation that finds director Barry Jenkins further strengthening his visual and narrative craft.”

Where to find it: You can find it free on Hulu with subscription, or rent/buy from Amazon, Apple TV, Vudu, Fandango Now, and YouTube.

The first Commons Community Book Club will meet on Wednesday, October 21 with a discussion of the first selection, “The Scent Keeper” by Erica Bauermeister.

A New York Times Bestseller and Reese’s Book Club selection, Kirkus Reviews describes the novel this way: “Told in a lyrical, haunting prose, the story provides fascinating information about the ways in which different fragrances can impact human behavior and the struggles of finding one's own identity. An artfully crafted coming-of-age story that will take the reader on an exquisite olfactory adventure."

This first selection is a quick read, so you’ve got plenty of time to read it and be ready to chat on 10/21. Learn more and order your copy here.

These selections and the future direction of each club have been directly informed by community input. In late August, Third Place Commons launched a survey to gauge the interests of potential participants and find out what kinds of club content would best meet the needs of the community. The survey received strong response and provided great insights into what folks most wanted from their book and movie clubs.

Here’s a quick look at some of what respondents said they wanted.

Commons Community Book Club

For those interested in a book club, current and recent bestsellers were by far the most popular category of books, with mysteries and award-winning literature also popular selections. So that’s what the club will focus on – critically acclaimed bestsellers from the past few years, with occasional mysteries and older gems mixed in.

While respondents said they like reading paperbacks and hardcovers equally, more than half would prefer to buy paperbacks. Therefore, most of the club’s selections will be books that are already out in paperback, though many folks also said they’d be getting their selections from the library or in audio or digital format.

TPC Movie Club

Movie club responses were equally enlightening. Nearly half of respondents said that “all movies” were their preferred category, with “award winners and critically acclaimed films” coming in a close second and strong interest as well in “oldies, but goodies” from the 80s, 90s, and 00s.

Four out of five people indicated they watch movies on Netflix and Amazon, but even more said they were happy to pay to rent movies (or go to the movies when the time comes) if it’s not available for free on their streaming service of choice. So selections will be made that are widely available to everyone, either free or to rent, rather than films only available to subscribers of a single service.

Folks were not overly concerned with seeing only new movies (especially since there aren’t many of those right now). As a result, selections will run the gamut, focusing mainly on critically acclaimed films of the past 5 years, with occasional widely available new releases and dips back further in time for well-loved favorites.

There was also a fair amount of interest in clubs focused on specific topics like classics, black voices and stories, LGBTQ+ cinema, and independent art house movies. So additional special focus clubs may roll out in the future. (Interested in leading a group in one of these areas? Email programs@thirdplacecommons.org)

Every Vote Counts! A two-part series on democratic process

Third Place Commons programs have moved online with a calendar full of free programs to bring you and your Commons community together all month long.

In addition to weekly Spanish, French, and German conversation groups and other fun monthly offerings, this month the Commons features two special programs just in time for election season.

Every Vote Counts! A Two-Part Series on Democratic Process takes a look at vital nuts and bolts of democracy from registering voters to how their votes are counted.

First up, on Wednesday, Sept. 23rd at 7pm, Third Place Commons partners with the League of Women Voters to present “Be a Voter Ambassador through Touchless Voter Registration!”

In this program, you will learn how to register to vote in Washington and how to teach others to use their phones to register. The webinar will also take a look at the barriers that new voters experience and how to overcome them. Register here.

On Wednesday, Sept. 30th at 7pm, sign in for “Fostering Democracy through Ranked Choice Voting,” presented by FairVote Washington. Ranked Choice Voting provides a more meaningful way for people to vote and completely eliminates the need to vote for “the lesser of two evils.” Join in this informative session to find out more about how it works and how to make it happen. Register here.

As always, all events from Third Place Commons are free, but registration for these sessions will be required for planning purposes. To register for each event, use the links above or visit the Third Place Commons online calendar, select the event you wish to attend, and click the Zoom link. (Recurring events do not require registration.)

Big News from Third Place Commons: Online Programs and a New Auction

Monday, August 17, 2020

Auction begins Monday for this original painting of
sunflowers in a blue vase by local artist
Meenakshi Sinha.

This week brings two exciting announcements from Third Place Commons, starting with a new online auction starting Monday at noon on Third Place Commons’ Facebook page.

Part of the TPC Awesome Auction-a-thon, today’s auction item is an original painting entitled Sunburst by local artist Meenakshi Sinha.

This vivid and sunny image of sunflowers is as cheerful as a summer day and will surely keep the winner in high spirits all year round.

Bids are taken directly in the Comments section of the Facebook auction post, and the highest bidder at noon on Friday will be the winner.

(If you don’t have a Facebook page, feel free to have a friend bid as your proxy.)

This week’s auction is the second in a series of offerings that will continue on August 30 with a $100 gift card from Third Place Books, on September 14 with an overnight bed and breakfast package at a waterfront Hyatt, and on September 24 with one more colorful bouquet of painted flowers by Sinha.

In other big news, Third Place Commons is ramping up a new series on online programming!

Back on the calendar, this time in virtual style, will be Commons classics like foreign language conversation groups and Computer Q/As. There will also be fun new additions like book and movie clubs and stand-alone programs on hot topics of local interest.

Staying home to stay healthy makes good sense, but it can also be isolating, lonely, and awfully tedious! So get ready to bring your Commons community home with you. Stay safe, but connected and we’ll all get through this together!

Keep an eye on the online calendar and stay tuned for more updates coming soon!

In the meantime, don’t forget that the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market continues every Sunday, 10-2, though October 18th. Fresh air shopping is the safest shopping around, so make your list, grab your face covering, leave the doggy at home (sorry, only service animals this year), and come on down!

Third Place Commons launches TPC Awesome Auction-a-thon Today!

Monday, August 3, 2020

When Third Place Commons made the difficult decision in March to cancel the annual fundraising breakfast, it left a big hole in the budget and a bunch of great live auction items unused.

Unfortunately, at the onset of the outbreak, the timing also wasn’t right to move the auction immediately online, so those special things had to simply sit on the shelf going to waste for the time being.

Fast forward to now and the GREAT NEWS!
Starting today, Third Place Commons is launching the TPC Awesome Auction-a-thon to give you a chance to get the good stuff!
While not everything on the original list remains viable in the current era, there are still a few gems that you are going to love.

The first item on auction block, launching today at noon, is a Gorgeous Garden Bundle featuring a two hour consultation with professional landscape designer Colette Highberger, a $100 Town Center Hardware gift card, and a goody bag from Wild Birds Unlimited.

You won’t need any special auction login or bidding numbers. You’ll just need Facebook andd a credit card or check. (If you don’t have Facebook, feel free to get a friend with Facebook to bid as your proxy.)

Here’s how it will work.
  • Every other Monday, starting today, a new auction will be posted on the Third Place Commons Facebook page at noon. Bids will be taken in the Comments section of the post throughout the week.
  • Each auction will close on the following Friday (4 days later) at noon and the highest bidder at that time will be the winner.
  • If you’re the winner, Third Place Commons will connect with you directly via Facebook Messenger to arrange payment and collection of your item.

Couldn’t be easier! Just be sure to like and follow the Third Place Commons Facebook page so you don’t miss any of the action.

Sunburst 20 x 20
Painting to be auctioned Aug 17

Following this week’s auction, new auctions will begin every other Monday through September. Here’s the line-up:

· Aug.31 – Third Place Books Gift Card (Value: $100)

· Sept. 14 – Waterfront Hyatt Regency Overnight Bed and Breakfast Package (Value: $260)

This auction is your chance to bid high and bid often to help ensure that Third Place Commons and the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market are here for you and the whole community when all this is finally over.

And in the short run, you’ll get some great stuff for yourself, too!

Other ways you can help include sharing each auction post to help spread the word and purchasing a fun, custom farmers market shirt here. Or you can make a donation directly to Third Place Commons and the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market.

The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is a program of Third Place Commons, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization celebrating its 20th anniversary of building real community in real space. It is located at the Town Center at Lake Forest Park at 17171 Bothell Way NE.
