Call for Artists and Crafters: Apply by Aug 3 for LFP Farmers Market Crafts Day

Tuesday, July 21, 2020

Applications are now being accepted from Washington artists and crafters to participate in the 2020 Crafts Day at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, which will take place on Sunday, August 23rd.

Crafts Day will be a one-day only addition to the regular Farmers Market, which takes place every Sunday from 10 AM to 2 PM through mid-October.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, Crafts Day will be heavily modified like the regular market to ensure a safe day of outdoor shopping (and selling) for one and all. As a result, there are many changes to the application process and vendor requirements. Interested crafters should read the requirements carefully before applying.

Artists and crafters of all kinds are encouraged to submit applications for consideration in this juried event. Visit the Third Place Commons website and review the Crafts Day application carefully for full details.

All applications must be submitted via email and received no later than August 3rd.

All items presented at the Crafts Day must be handmade in Washington by the individuals selling at the market. The market seeks to reflect a wide variety of media to represent a broad spectrum of creative endeavors, so submit your applications soon!

The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is a program of Third Place Commons, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to fostering real community in real space. It is located at Town Center at Lake Forest Park at 17171 Bothell Way NE.

See you at the market!

Third Place Commons temporary closure update

Wednesday, March 18, 2020

To Our Beloved Commons Community,

In response to Governor Inslee’s most recent mandates related to COVID-19, here are the latest changes at Third Place Commons:

The Commons space is now closed until further notice - Although Third Place Commons operates as a nonprofit organization, separate from our neighboring restaurants, stores, and the Town Center mall, we are naturally an interdependent community.

As we previously shared, although programming was being cancelled, the space at Third Place Commons is opened and closed each day by Town Center Security, and thus remains physically open during mall business hours.

However, in response to the mandate that all restaurants close or provide take-out only, Town Center management has removed all chairs from the dining area to discourage diners from loitering with their to-go items.

This means that the Commons space is now effectively closed until further notice, even for small groups and solo workers.

All weekend music, stage events, and groups based in the Commons are canceled until further notice - This closure will remain in place at minimum through the end of March, likely much longer. We will share updates widely when we are able to reopen the space and restart stage and Commons programming.

Like you, we are saddened and distressed by these developments, and we will miss our Commons community during these trying times. However, we also share the commitment with all of you to ensure the good health and safety of our community. So we join with state and local authorities in asking everyone to stay home as much as possible as we each do our part to reduce the spread of this novel coronavirus.

We know the value of joining together in the same space to connect, laugh, and learn, and we greatly look forward to the time when we can do that once again with all of you at Third Place Commons. That time will come.

In the meantime, you can follow us on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) for updates (and hopefully some little doses of good cheer to get you through).

As many of you know, the onset of this outbreak came just as our fundraising breakfast was scheduled to take place. Although authorities had not yet mandated such cancellations at that time, we felt it was in the best interest of our community to cancel that event out of an abundance of caution. And indeed, within a week, such events had been prohibited.

As a community supported nonprofit, our strength depends on you. Needless to say, the cancellation of our biggest fundraiser of the year has significant financial ramifications for Third Place Commons and the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market. Please consider an online gift today to help us fill the gap.

Thank you and take care!

Third Place Commons COVID-19 update

Friday, March 6, 2020

In light of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus causing COVID-19 in King County and beyond, we have received a number of questions about our programs and whether Third Place Commons would remain open.

We want to share with you an update about how Third Place Commons is responding and what you can expect in the weeks to come.

Third Place Commons Remains Open

The physical space of Third Place Commons is expected to remain open as usual. Because the space is opened and closed each day by our colleagues at Town Center security, we expect the space to be open during all usual business hours unless the management of Town Center make a determination to close. We will share updates via social media if we receive notification of such changes.

Programming Schedule May Change

Because of our commitments to our many programming partners, we are not issuing a blanket cancelation of all programming. However, individual events may be canceled at the discretion of the performers/presenters, or if we make the determination that such a decision must be made for certain events.

Because the program schedule may change on short notice, we encourage you to check our calendar or follow us on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) for all program updates before heading out to see or participate in any of our events.

We do urge those who wish to attend to use discretion and abide the recommendations of the public health authorities regarding your participation in such events. See more on that below in the Public Precautions section.

Precautions Taken by Town Center Management

We have been in touch with Merlone Geier, the management of the Town Center, to address the public health concerns presented by the COVID-19 virus and they have let us know that they are taking the following steps:
  • Redoubling strength and frequency of cleaning efforts and using virus-killing cleaning products;
  • Installing hand-sanitizer stations around the mall;
  • Temporarily removing all toys from the play area to disinfect and minimize the potential for spread of the virus.

Public Precautions – Our Requests of You

Following the recommendations of King County authorities, we are asking the public to take the following precautions when visiting Third Place Commons.
  • Refrain from shaking hands, hugging, or other physical contact with others in the Commons.
  • Wash your hands often and well with soap and water – for at least 20 seconds (Sing the “ABC Song” once through), and be sure to clean fingernails and cuticles, between fingers, and wrists.
  • When soap and water is not immediately available, use the hand sanitizer stations or your own alcohol based sanitizers.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • If you are in an especially vulnerable population (over 60, underlying health conditions, immunosuppressed, or pregnant), please respect the recommendations of the public authorities and consider staying home.
  • If you are sick, stay home.

We love our Commons Community and there’s nothing we love more than gathering you together in our space. But we also love our community enough to want to keep you all safe and healthy! Therefore, we ask that all visitors follow these guidelines, even if they are not in the high risk groups themselves, in order to minimize transmission to those most at risk, both at the Commons and elsewhere.

Thank you all for your cooperation in helping us to keep our wonderful Commons Community both connected and safe during this period.

A Message From Third Place Commons – Breakfast CANCELED

Wednesday, March 4, 2020

By now you may have heard from table hosts, friends, or social media that Third Place Commons made the very painful decision to postpone our annual community breakfast, which was scheduled for the morning of Thursday, March 5th.

We have done this based on the recommendations of King County health authorities out of an abundance of caution for our guests, volunteers, and staff.

Although we were taking precautions to minimize the risks to our guests, we ultimately determined that it was in everyone’s best interest to cancel this event for the time being.

Please know that this was a heartbreaking decision because we had so many special plans for our 20th anniversary celebration! We very much hope to reschedule for a future, safer date or to find an alternative way to celebrate with you all.

Please be sure to follow us on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter). You can also email programs@thirdplacecommons.org to be added to our mailing list.

In the meantime, we hope you will still consider making a generous gift of support to Third Place Commons. The funds raised by this event are crucial to supporting our annual programming, and your support truly matters! Your generosity is what drives this Commons community!

Please consider making a generous online gift here and stay tuned for future updates.

Wednesday, February 12, 2020

Third Place Commons is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a community supported nonprofit organization with an extra special party at this year’s annual community breakfast – and everyone in the Commons community is invited!

The big event, which is entitled “20 in 2020: Twenty Years of Your Community in Your Space,” will take place on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 7am.

As part of the celebration, the organization will look back at important milestones in its two decade history and of the evolution of Third Place Commons to become the place for your community in your space.

Fittingly, the Founders of Third Place Commons will be presented with the Friends of the Community Award. The list of founders is long and esteemed and includes many luminaries from our local community who will be on hand to join in the festivities.

The fun will begin with a lively set from local favorites the Milner Family Fiddles, followed by a tasty breakfast courtesy of Honey Bear Bakery. A live auction will include a number of special items including glorious artwork, great restaurants, and even a special overnight escape. There are also a few extra special surprises lined up for attendees to make the event one to remember!

This annual fundraiser is always a joyful occasion when friends new and old join together to show support for this vibrant community space. Proceeds from the event support 900+ free events each year and the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, all hosted by Third Place Commons, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Whether it’s the weekly live music and dancing, foreign language conversation groups, Mahjong Mondays, or Kaleidoscope play and learn sessions. Or a monthly gathering like the Art-Ins, Coloring for Adults, League of Women Voters, Ranked Choice Voting, or the LFP Garden Club. Whether it’s avidly shopping the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, or even if it’s just working alone or meeting your friends in the Commons.

Whatever your favorite Commons activity, you are a vital part of the Commons community, and it’s your support that will help that community to thrive into the future.

Tickets are just $50 (or $375 for a table of eight) and can be purchased online at ThirdPlaceCommons.org/Breakfast2020.

Community members are also invited to “share their Commons stories” (in 250 words or fewer) to help celebrate this important 20th anniversary milestone.

Third Place Commons celebrates the generosity of neighbors

Thursday, March 14, 2019

On Thursday, March 7th, a community of neighbors gathered at Third Place Commons for their annual fundraising breakfast and raised over $30,000 to support the Commons, more than 900 free events each year, and the LFP Farmers Market.

The morning began with wonderful music from the Milner Family Fiddles, a delicious breakfast courtesy of Honey Bear Bakery, and a fast-paced auction that got everyone going as their Victrola coffee kicked in.

During her talk, featured speaker Mónica Guzmán implored each of us to be what David Brooks called a “weaver” rather than a “ripper.” In a world that is often divided by conflicting perspectives and dug-in positions, weavers are those who seek to reinforce relationships, and through them cultivate a generous spirit with each other.

As Mónica observed, even when no other relationship exists, “if nothing else, we are neighbors.”

Following Mónica’s talk, emcee and Board Vice-Chair Casey Smirniotopoulos invited guests to make a gift of support, noting that “the warmth and welcome of this gathering space reflect the intention and vision of our founders and the ongoing commitment of a dedicated board of directors…

“And all of it reflects the countless staff hours of work to bring [hundreds of] events to life while fostering that spirit of camaraderie and connection.”

Audience gave Anne an enthusiastic standing ovation

For the grand finale, Norman Lieberman, Chair of the Commons Board of Directors and Breakfast Committee, presented this year’s Friends of the Community Award to one of the organization’s founders, Anne Stadler.

When Anne accepted the award, she generously shared it with everyone in the room, acknowledging something essential – that the success of our shared Commons community depends on the engagement and contributions of each and every participant in the community.

In the end, the day was a terrific success and the board sends a big THANK YOU to everyone who joined in the fun and made gifts of support to this vital community nonprofit.

But if you missed the event, you can still show your support by making a gift at ThirdPlaceCommons.org/Give.

See you at the Commons!
