★William Gibson

Agency

William Gibson has trained his eye on the future for decades, ever since coining the term "cyberspace" in his classic speculative novel Neuromancer in the early 1980s. Gibson is back with Agency -- a science fiction thriller heavily influenced by our most current events.

Verity Jane, gifted app whisperer, takes a job as the beta tester for a new product: "Eunice," a disarmingly human AI. Meanwhile, a century ahead in London, Wilf Netherton works amid plutocrats and plunderers, survivors of the slow and steady apocalypse known as the jackpot. His boss can look into alternate pasts and nudge their ultimate directions. Verity and Eunice are her current project. Wilf can see what Verity and Eunice can't: their own version of the jackpot, just around the corner, and the roles they both may play in it. Tickets are required; ticket includes one copy of Agency and admission for two. Tickets are available at thirdplacebooks.com

Imperfect Union: How Jessie and John Frémont Mapped the West, Invented Celebrity, and Helped Cause the Civil War

NPR Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep tells the riveting story of John and Jessie Frémont, the husband and wife team who in the 1800s were instrumental in the westward expansion of the United States, and thus became America's first great political couple. With rare detail and in consummate style, Inskeep introduces us to a couple whose joint ambitions and talents intertwined with those of the nascent United States itself. Taking advantage of expanding news media, aided by an increasingly literate public, the two linked their names to the three great national movements of the time—westward settlement, women's rights, and opposition to slavery. Together, the Frémonts took part in events that defined the country and gave rise to a new, more global America. Presentation is free;

A Flicker of Courage

The story takes place in a world much like ours, but at the same time not at all like ours, in which Vlad Luxor -- a capricious, vain, infantile tyrant--rules over a town with an iron fist. He's an emperor with no clothes, but woe is the person who points that out--they could wind up turned into a squirrel or lizard or who knows what! For in this world, the evil leader also has magic, which he uses to punish anyone who speaks out against him.

Two community events to raise awareness of gun violence prevention

Friday, November 8, 2019

Community events supported by local gun violence prevention (GVP) volunteers with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America will be held next week on Thursday, November 14, at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, and on Sunday, November 17, at the Edmonds Theater.

Both events are free, open to the public, and appropriate for youth and adults interested in learning more about the impact of gun violence and how to help prevent it.

Author Michelle Roehm McCann will be discussing her new book “Enough is Enough” at 7pm on November 14, 2019 at Third Place Books 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park. Featuring a foreword by Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, “Enough is Enough: How Students Can Join the Fight for Gun Safety” examines America’s gun violence issues — myths and facts, causes and perpetrators, solutions and change-makers — providing a road map for teens ready to take an active role to make real change in their community and across the nation.

Documentary film
Volunteers with the Washington Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Black Lives Matter will host a free screening at the Edmonds Theater (415 Main Street, Edmonds) on November 17 of the documentary film “QUEST: A Portrait of An American Family.”

Doors open at 10am, and the film begins at 10:30am, followed by a brief panel discussion of the issues raised in the documentary.

“QUEST,” directed by Jonathan Olshefski, is an intimate, feature-length documentary film that captures ten years in the life of a black family living in North Philadelphia. Released at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017,

“QUEST” is described as a “moving portrait of the Raineys, who are raising a family while nurturing a community of hip hop artists in their home music studio.

It’s a safe place where all are welcome, but this creative sanctuary can’t always shield them from the strife that grips their neighborhood. We’re shown how gun violence directly and indirectly impacts this influential family. Epic in scope, QUEST is a vivid illumination of race and class in America, and a testament to love, healing, and hope.”

All You Can Ever Know

Nicole Chung was born severely premature, placed for adoption by her Korean parents, and raised by a white family in a sheltered Oregon town. But as Nicole grew up—facing prejudice her adoptive family couldn't see,

finding her identity as an Asian American and as a writer, becoming ever more curious about where she came from—she wondered if the story she'd been told was the whole truth.

Award-winning LFP author presents her book about the Vietnam war era at Third Place Books on Saturday

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

In 1968–69, the US involvement in Vietnam reached its peak with close to 550,000 military personnel in-country. The anti-war movement was also peaking, and, on November 15, 1969, the largest anti-war protest in US history took place, when an equal number of people – half a million – participated in a peaceful demonstration against the war in Washington, D.C.

Alice K. Boatwright was in Washington that day, and her experiences during those war years and after were the inspiration for her 2012 book, COLLATERAL DAMAGE, which has just been released by Standing Stone Books in a new edition, marking their 50th anniversary.

On Saturday, October 19th, at 6pm, Boatwright will launch the new edition at Third Place Books, Lake Forest Park. The event will include both a reading and discussion.

COLLATERAL DAMAGE is three linked novellas set in the US at the height of the war, and in the US and Vietnam at key moments in the post-war years. It's not about the fighting, but rather traces the long-term impact of the war on those who fought, those who resisted, and the families and friends caught between them.

While 50 years have now passed, the fissures in American society that opened during the Vietnam era remain painfully evident. Underlying each story are the same unanswered questions about the wars we continue to engage in today: what is justified and when, who will fight and why, and will any good come of it in the end?

COLLATERAL DAMAGE was a finalist for the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, winner of a bronze medal for literary fiction from the Independent Publisher Book Awards, and a Small Press Distribution bestseller. It is available from Small Press Distribution and Standing Stone Books, as well as bookstores and online retailers.

Alice K. Boatwright is the award-winning author of both literary fiction and mysteries. She holds an MFA from Columbia, and formerly taught writing at the University of New Hampshire, UC Berkeley Extension, the American School of Paris and elsewhere. In addition to COLLATERAL DAMAGE, she has published a chapbook of stories set in the San Juans, SEA, SKY, ISLANDS (Noontime Books, 2019); numerous short stories in journals such as CALYX; and the popular Ellie Kent mysteries. An alumna of Hedgebrook, she has lived in Lake Forest Park since 2014.

Seattle doctor presents powerful new book about lung cancer patients at Third Place Books tonight

Wednesday, October 9, 2019

Morhaf Al Achkar, MD, PhD
Morhaf Al Achkar, MD, PhD, professor at the University of Washington, family doctor, and a lung cancer patient himself, has authored a book entitled, "Roads to Meaning and Resilience with Cancer: Forty Stories of Coping, Finding Meaning, and Building Resilience While Living with Incurable Lung Cancer.”

He will be featured at a presentation and book signing event on Wednesday October 9, 2019 at 7pm at Third Place Books on the upper level of Town Center, intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE in Lake Forest Park.

The book tells the stories of 40 patients with incurable lung cancer, including mine. It aims to help patients, families, and healthcare providers understand the experience of living with cancer. It invites reflections on the essential questions of meaning, resilience, and coping with adversity in life.
Patients with cancer have an urgency to find meaning in life. They struggle with the illness, its emotional impact, and the consequences of treatments.
However, with time, reflection, and support, they develop resilience.
The book is for cancer patients who are tarrying at the limits of time. It is also for those who live around patients with cancer: caregivers, families and friends, and health care providers. People who struggle with other illnesses will also find aspects of their story reflected here.
This book is about the essence of the human experience at its limits. It is for every reader.

An editorial reviewer said, “Dr. Al Achkar gives us the gift of insight into the life experiences of people who have been diagnosed with incurable lung cancer.

"With this insight, we can better understand the struggles of those suffering from disease. Whether you’ve been diagnosed with cancer or not, this book will help you better understand yourself.”

An oncologist wrote, “The book is beautifully written and just incredibly insightful, yet personable. It will be a wonderful support and resource for all cancer patients.

"It was uplifting and positive, yet hard to read, knowing how difficult it is for all cancer patients. Maybe that is an even better reason why the book needs to be published so that caregivers and providers better understand the experience.”

Amazon reviewers described as “eye opening,” “Written in a very attractive, yet scientific style,” “highly recommend for every cancer patient and health care provider,” “immediately touched the depth of my heart,” and, “...it led me to think more intentionally about who I am.”
