Michael Niemann

Third Place Books Lake Forest Park

Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 6pm.

It is the fall of 2015. The refugee stream from Syria into Turkey has swelled to unprecedented numbers. Valentin Vermeulen, investigator for the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services, is sent to check that the money sent to alleviate the crisis is spent for the intended purposes.

He visits a newly established UN sub-office in Gaziantep, southern Turkey. After being stood up by the local administrator, Vermeulen spends the weekend in Kilis to see if the refugees not living in official camps receive proper aid. He makes his way to a rough tent camp. None of the refugees there have received any aid.

At the camp, he meets Rima, who’s questioned by the police in connection with the murder of her friend. His decision to help her sets in motion a violent confrontation from which they barely escape. Despite her plea for help, he has to go back to Gaziantep.

His investigation into why the refugees in the camp haven’t received any aid leads to the discovery of an audacious fraud perpetrated by the local mafia. Since Rima hasn’t stopped asking questions either, both are chased by the mafia and the police. Desperate to recover the stolen millions and keep Rima safe, Vermeulen faces his toughest challenge yet.

This is the fourth in the Valentin Vermeulen Thriller series.

Michael Niemann will present his new
book at Third Place Books Sunday

Shoreline author, Jeffrey D. Briggs, at Third Place Books on Tuesday, Sept 24

Sunday, September 15, 2019

Shoreline resident and new author, Jeffrey D. Briggs, will be at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park Town Center on Tuesday, September 24, at 7pm, to read from his debut novel, Out of the Cold Dark Sea, book one in the Seattle Waterfront Mystery series.

Set among locations familiar to area readers such as Ballard, Lake Union and Puget Sound, Out of the Cold Dark Sea features Martha Whitaker, who waits alone on a pier in the pre-dawn rain for her friend and mentor, Hewitt Wilcox.
Fear had laced his last message. Now she must control her own fear as she navigates secrets new and old to clear her name and locate her missing friend ...before anyone else is killed.

The dark, cold waters of Puget Sound can hide secrets for a long time until mysteries and old grudges arise like ghosts from a history long-forgotten.

When his empty van is hoisted from the frigid waters, Martha begins the search to find Hewitt.

Resourceful, strong, and steeled by inner wounds, Martha is joined by a crusading journalist who believes Hewitt’s disappearance may reveal secrets about an ugly chapter of American history.

Together they’re drawn into a sinister world of forgery, murder, and betrayal, and she is forced to confront her own dark past, where violence provided primal justice. In a fight for her life, she finds she’s in a fight for her soul.

Out of the Cold Dark Sea is a gripping debut in the Seattle Waterfront Mystery series from a journalist who plumes the depths people will go to for revenge.

Shoreline author Jeffrey D. Briggs
will be at Third Place Books
on September 24 at 7pm
Jeffrey D. Briggs, a writer and journalist, has been writing about the Seattle waterfront since he moved onto his sailboat thirty years ago.

He now lives on land with his wife and dog and can often be found on the shores of Puget Sound, wondering what secrets lie hidden beneath those cold waters.

He has published over 350 articles in regional and national magazines. A long-time resident of Seattle, Wash., he took a detour in life and moved to Rochester, Minn., where he became a biomedical science writer for Mayo Clinic, and got to preview all his future diseases.

He also got to shovel many varieties of snow and experience his first Polar Vortex.

Realizing his mistake when he could no longer see out his office window because of snow drifts, he returned home to the Pacific Northwest, dropping anchor in Shoreline’s Richmond Beach, a beachfront community on the shores of Puget Sound.

Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley at Third Place Books Lake Forest Park August 27

Thursday, August 8, 2019

Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley will visit Third Place Books Lake Forest Park on Tuesday, August 27 at 7pm, as part of the tour for his new book, America is Better Than This.

Few had witnessed what Merkley discovered just by showing up at the border and demanding to see what was going on behind closed doors.
Contrary to the official stories and soothing videos, he found mothers and children, newborn babies and infants, stranded for days on border bridges in blistering heat or locked up in ice-cold holding pens.
There were nearly 1,500 boys jammed into a former Walmart, a child tent prison in the desert with almost 3,000 boys and girls, and children struggling to survive in gang-filled Mexican border towns after they were blocked from seeking asylum in the United States.
Worst of all, there were the children ripped out of their parents' arms and sorted into cages in some profoundly warped attempt to discourage migration.

America Is Better Than This tells the inside story of how one senator, with no background as an immigration activist, became a leading advocate for reform of the brutal policies that have created a humanitarian crisis on the southern U.S. border. It represents the heartfelt and candid voice of a concerned American who believes his country stands for something far bigger and better.

Jeff Merkley is a senator from Oregon, serving in the US Senate since 2009.

Two tickets to this event are available with each pre-order of America is Better Than This. The book will be published on Tuesday, August 20, and can be pre-ordered at thirdplacebooks.com.

Third Place Books Lake Forest Park is located at 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA, 98155.

Book launch Tuesday at Third Place Books: The Hollow Kingdom

Monday, August 5, 2019

Seattle author Kira Jane Buxton will launch her first book, The Hollow Kingdom, on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, 7pm at Third Place Books at Town Center, intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE in Lake Forest Park.

Here's a story description:

ST, a domesticated crow and bird of simple pleasures, loves hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle’s wild crows (those idiots) and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos®.
Then Big Jim’s eyeball falls out of his head, and ST starts to feel like something isn’t quite right.
Unable to cure Big Jim’s debilitating malady, ST is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty canine companion, where he discovers that the human neighbors are devouring each other and local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of dangerous new predators roaming Seattle.
Humanity’s extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a foul-mouthed crow.

But this doesn't really do the book justice. The crow is charming and likeable and completely relatable as the anti-hero narrator of the story - taking turns with an arrogant cat. The plot twists with every chapter in a way that was amusing and surprising.

The book is set in Seattle, quite authentically. At one point ST is knocked off a branch by the arrogant college crows - you know, the ones who live at the UW Bothell campus. ST doesn't like them very much - "a bunch of elitist toot cabbages."

The themes of catastrophic biodiversity loss and global warming are balanced by the crow, who as Buxton says, "represents hope and belief that we can use our big beautiful brains and still save the planet."

Here's a quote that I wish I'd said: The book is “strange, delightful, crass, thoughtful, funny, and oddly poetic...”

You can purchase a copy on Tuesday and have Buxton autograph it for you. Call the bookstore at 206-366-3333.

Donna Has Left the Building - new novel from Susan Jane Gilman

Tuesday, June 4, 2019

Susan Jane Gilman
We’ve all heard the stories about men in the throes of a midlife crisis who go off on wild benders and epic quests. But what if that story featured a woman instead? What if that woman ran off and behaved very, very badly, but woke up to a much bigger world along the way as well?

This is what Susan Jane Gilman explores in her upcoming novel, Donna Has Left The Building (Grand Central Publishing).

Forty-five-year-old Donna Koczynski is an ex-punk rocker, a recovering alcoholic, and the mother of two teenagers whose suburban existence detonates when she comes home early from a sales conference in Las Vegas to the surprise of a lifetime.

Donna Has Left The Building is a novel unique to our times, that tackles themes such as technology, opioid addiction, and the ongoing refugee crisis.

Though Donna’s journey is extraordinary, Susan Jane Gilman’s inimitable writing brings a flawed “everywoman” to life and illuminates ways for all of us to have compassion, to truly love, and to be brave in anxious times.

Susan Jane Gilman is the bestselling author of Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress, Kiss My Tiara, Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven, and the novel, The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street

She has provided commentary for NPR and written for the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Ms. Magazine, among others.

You can hear from her in person on Monday, June 10, 2019, 7pm at Third Place Books Lake Forest Park, 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park 98155

Pre-order the book in the store or by calling 206-366-3333.

Leslie Budewitz
Leslie Budewitz blends her passion for food, great mysteries, and the Northwest in two light-hearted mystery series: Food Lovers Village Mysteries, set in Jewel Bay, Montana and the Seattle Spice Shop Mysteries, set in Seattle.

Suspense Magazine calls Assault and Pepper, first in the Seattle Spice Shop Mysteries, “the perfect recipe for a few hours of pure enjoyment” and “a first-rate story.”

New York Times bestseller Laura Childs says of Leslie’s Food Lovers Village Mysteries, set in Jewel Bay, Montana, “Small town charm and big time chills.” Death al Dente, the first Food Lovers’ Village mystery, won the 2013 Agatha Award for Best First Novel.

Leslie is also a lawyer. Her guide for writers, Books, Crooks and Counselors: How to Write Accurately About Criminal Law and Courtroom Procedure, won the 2011 Agatha Award for Best Nonfiction, making her the first author to win Agatha Awards for both fiction and nonfiction.

Leslie’s short stories have been published in Ellery Queen, Alfred Hitchcock, and elsewhere, and recognized in Best American Mystery Stories of 2009. She served as 2015-16 president of Sisters in Crime, and is currently the Montana representative to the board of the Rocky Mountain chapter of Mystery Writers of America.

A native Montanan, she lives at the foot of the Rocky Mountains with her husband, a musician and doctor of natural medicine, and their gray tuxedo cat, an avid birdwatcher.

Chai Another Day is the 4th book in the Spice Shop Mysteries, following Assault and Pepper, Guilty as Cinnamon, and Killing in Thyme.

The Spice Shop Mysteries are set in Seattle, where Pepper Reece and the crew at Seattle Spice in the venerable Pike Place Market explore secrets of the past and the present.

Seattle Spice Shop owner Pepper Reece probes murder while juggling a troubled employee, her mother’s house hunt, and a fisherman who’s set his hook for her.
As owner of the Spice Shop in Seattle’s famed Pike Place Market, Pepper Reece is always on the go. Between conjuring up new spice blends and serving iced spice tea to customers looking to beat the summer heat, she finally takes a break for a massage. But the Zen moment is shattered when she overhears an argument in her friend Aimee’s vintage home decor shop that ends in murder.
Wracked by guilt over her failure to intervene, Pepper investigates, only to discover a web of deadly connections that could ensnare a friend – and Pepper herself.

On Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 7pm, Leslie will appear at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park to chat about Chai and autograph the copies of her book that were purchased from Third Place.

On April 27, fans can pick up a SIBD Passport at any of the participating stores and use it to collect a stamp at each store during the day as proof of visits. Seattle Times: Seattle bookstores were doomed. Then Third Place helped rewrite the story.

Wednesday, December 26, 2018

Third Place Books

Moira Macdonald, Art Critic for The Seattle Times, wrote a warm and fascinating story about Third Place Books. She explains the origin of the store and its offspring, as well.

I don't know if she lives here and frequents Third Place, but she writes about it like a native.

A lot of the joy of Third Place is the experience, but I remind you that you can order books through Third Place just as easily as you can from Amazon - and a real person can help you and give advice. Then a trip to the store to pick up your book when it comes in and a cup of coffee from Burney Brothers or Honey Bear. And you don't have to worry about porch pirates stealing your books.

Moira's story begins:

If you walk through the entrance of Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park — right past the signs by the door that say EAT SLEEP READ — on a random weekday afternoon, you might find something nobody could have predicted a decade ago: a neighborhood bookstore, busy and thriving. On a recent visit, a little girl in a dinosaur costume rushed excitedly between the shelves, past a silver-haired gentleman reading quietly in an armchair.
A young dad, squatting, showed his stroller-bound toddler a picture book; nearby, a mother and teen daughter, heads tilted at precisely the same angle, examined a table of new paperbacks. A woman with a resigned expression and a stack of five hardcovers joined the line at the registers. And thousands of books waited, neatly aligned; each of them just the right fit for someone.

The entire story here: Seattle bookstores were doomed. Then Third Place helped rewrite the story.

Third Place Books holding a book drive for kids in detention

Wednesday, October 10, 2018

In difficult times, books are a valuable source of solace and solidarity.

Until October 31, 2018, Third Place Books will collect bilingual Spanish/English and Spanish language books to send to children currently being detained and separated from their parents.

We will give 20% off purchased books to be donated.

We will ship the books to Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), whose mission is to protect unaccompanied children who enter the US immigration system alone to ensure that no child appears in court without an attorney. KIND will then distribute books to children in detention centers across the United States.

Please consider the below titles to donate or come into our Lake Forest Park location (upper level Town Center, intersection Bothell and Ballinger Way) to browse the display in our children's department.

Soñadores

This beacon of a picture book, which illustrates the story of the author's own journey to the United States with her two-month-old son, emphatically asserts that immigrants belong in this country, no matter the political rhetoric that claims the opposite.

Frida Kahlo y Sus Animalitos

Frida Kahlo y sus Animalitos, written by Monica Brown and illustrated by John Parra, is based on the life of one of the world's most influential painters, Frida Kahlo, and the animals that inspired her art and life.

Brown's story recounts Frida's beloved pets — two monkeys, a parrot, three dogs, two turkeys, an eagle, a black cat, and a fawn — and playfully considers how Frida embodied many wonderful characteristics of each animal.
