~ CHRISTMAS IN THE MIDWEST ~

Just in time for the holidays, The Phoenix Theatre is here to provide you with the new Christmas classic, A Nice Family Christmas by Phil Olson.

Bring the Midwest to the Northwest with this crazy and insightful family comedy – complete with lutefisk, a grumpy granny, and heaps of laughs.

It’s Christmas Eve, and a young newspaper reporter on the brink of being fired has been assigned a last-chance story about a typical family Christmas – his family’s Christmas. He goes home to his recently widowed mother, his crazy uncle, his eccentric grandmother, and his battling siblings and their neurotic spouses, who provide no shortage of material.

One by one, we learn each family member’s secrets, problems, and dysfunctions, and when they learn that he’s writing an article with some very personal family information, the fruitcake hits the fan. The question is, will the magic of Christmas bring this family back together?

Director Eric Lewis and the incredible cast are in rehearsal now and are prepping a fantastic show.

"Things are really moving along nicely. It’s a really talented group of actors and the play is delightfully written,” says Lewis, “These are full, rich characters who yearn to unite with their family but, as in real life, they find that they cannot quite connect. We get to watch them grow and change. And also get manipulated by a loving mother.”

Featuring local favorites Melanie Calderwood, Susan Connors, and James Lynch this show is sure to sell quickly!

Shakespeare's Lost Christmas Play - December 8-9, 2023 by RBCC Players

Monday, October 30, 2023

The RBCC Players are currently in rehearsal for their Annual Holiday Production, Shakespeare’s Lost Christmas.

This fun, upbeat, holiday production was created in 2020 and pokes fun at a local troupe of actors during the 1600s in the tiny English village of Little Moldingham-on-Cheese.

This band of actors lost all their costumes, props, and scripts the previous year when the theatre accidentally burned down. With nothing to perform, the director writes to William Shakespeare to see if he will write them a Christmas play.

As the letter from Shakespeare is received, the Plague Doctor and Royal Hearld arrive to announce that because of an impending plague all people must stand 6’ apart and all ‘entertainments’ are cancelled. The stage manager’s quick thinking finds a loophole that will have the audience laughing from start to finish.

Shakespeare’s Lost Christmas Play by Dwayne Yancy and produced by special arrangement with Big Dog / Norman Maine Publishing LLC, Rapid City, SD. will be presented by the RBCC Players in December.

The RBCC Players have been performing at the Richmond Beach Congregational Church in the Bill McLaughlin Theater since 1984.

Please save the date and plan to join us for this amusing Holiday Production on Friday December 8, 2023 at 7:30pm and Saturday December 9 at 2pm.

Tickets will go on sale on November 1 and will be $20.00 and $15.00 for Students and Seniors.

For questions, please email rbccplayers@gmail.com

The Bill McLaughlin Theater is located at:

Calendar Girls at the Phoenix Theatre starts with a laugh that doesn't really stop

Friday, October 20, 2023

The Calendar Girls in their tai chi class
By Kindle Carpp

If you don’t like to laugh please avoid this play. Calendar Girls starts off with a laugh that doesn’t really stop. The humor has great timing and great energy. It has a thread of a sad story that leads to some touching moments.

Tim Firth’s hilarious play is based on the true story of eleven Women's Institute members who famously posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund in 1999 after the husband of a member dies of the disease.

Director Renee Gilbert said, “Eleven women decided to laugh in the face of traditional propriety and do what they felt needed to be done in order to help overcome grief. And now their laughter is passed onto us.”

There was a fun use of props to allow the actors to be “nude” on stage.

The ensemble cast and their comedic timing made this lighthearted comedy easy to watch. I especially enjoyed Melanie Calderwood’s subtle physical comedy in her portrayal of the doddering Ruth. And Ingrid Sanai Buron made Marie unlikable in the most authentic kind of way.

I particularly took notice of the costumes by Elizabeth Shipman. It was a subtle use of color in a neutral colored set. They felt like an expression of each character.

Calendar Girls runs through Sunday, October 29, 2023,
  • Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm
  • Sundays at 2pm
Adults $25.00
Seniors 55+/Students/US Military and Veterans $20.00

Run Time: 100 Minutes with a 15-minute intermission

Appropriate for viewers 13 and up with parental guidance suggested and implied nudity.

The Ladies of the Phoenix Theatre create their own calendar as a fundraiser

The calendar is for sale as a fundraiser for the theatre and the leukemia society

Calendar Girls tells the inspiring true story of a group of 11 older women who made a calendar to raise money for Leukemia research after one of their member’s husbands passed away from the disease. The play is currently running at The Phoenix Theatre in Firdale Village, Edmonds. (See review)

The Ladies of the Phoenix Theatre were looking for a way to make more than just great theatre this Fall, so they decided to put their considerable talents on display and posed for a cheeky 2024 calendar.

Proceeds from the calendar fundraiser will help support the Phoenix Theatre’s upcoming 16th season and half of the profits raised will go straight to the Seattle Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

“The Calendar is a celebration of every shape and size, and of life!” Says Melanie Calderwood, the Phoenix Theatre’s Artistic Director: a cancer survivor and lifelong cancer-care nurse.
“We try to find ways to use laughter to help heal and we contribute to cancer-fighting causes whenever we can, so this was a perfect match.”
”Plus,” she added, “We try not to take ourselves too seriously.”

In the past the Phoenix Theatre has donated to the American Cancer Society and presently offers free tickets to cancer patients throughout their season with no hoops to jump through via their Laughter is the Best Medicine initiative.

Both tickets for the show Calendar Girls and the PG-13, 2024 wall calendars are available for adults to purchase online at www.tptedmonds.org

The play, running through Sunday, October 29, 2023 in Edmonds, is appropriate for viewers 13 and up with parental guidance suggested and implied nudity.

Cry It Out now playing at As If Theatre in Kenmore

Wednesday, October 18, 2023

Jessie (Taryn Pearce) and Lina (Gabriela Noble) are new mothers and new friends

Cry It Out is currently playing at the charming theatre in the Kenmore Community Club, 7304 NE 175th St, Kenmore, WA 98028.

Cry It Out is a drama that uses humor to add levity to lighten the mood and not bog down the audience in the everyday struggles of life. The topics brought up are universal to American families and the complicated relationships we have with our spouses, parents and ourselves when we have major life changes, in this case children.

The dialog and acting were so authentic that I had to hold myself back from joining in on Jessie and Lina's backyard conversations.

The talented actors brought me so deep into the story that I wanted to both give Adrienne a cup of overly hot coffee so she would burn off her taste buds and hug her once we were given a window into her world.

And I really wanted to give Mitchell a gift certificate for therapy because he made me so uncomfortable and it was clear it was because he had issues that had not been resolved.

Cry It Out features the talent of Taryn Pearce (Jessie), Gabriela Noble (Lina), Kira Dorrian (Adrienne), and Varun Kainth (Mitchell), with a creative team that includes Ken Michels (Set Design), Gwyn Skone (Lighting Design), William French (Sound Design), Ali Kidder-Mostrom (Costume Design), and Chandria Danelle (Property Design).

This story of three new mothers was written by Molly Smith Metzler (Shameless, Orange is the New Black, and Maid), and directed by Shoreline resident Betsy Mugavero.

Cry It Out runs two more weekends October 19-29, 2023 – Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 5:00pm,  90 minutes, no intermission

Tickets: $25 and $20 (Seniors / Students) available at asiftheatre.com

As If Theatre Company is pleased to announce its sixth mainstage production, Cry It Out, written by Molly Smith Metzler (Shameless, Orange is the New Black, and Maid), and directed by Betsy Mugavero.

Cry It Out holds both a microscope and a megaphone to the joys and perils that today’s mothers face. This heartwarming comedy takes a sharp and honest look at the power of female friendship, the dilemma of going back to work after being home with a newborn, and the effect that economic and social class has on parenthood in America.

“It’s an investigation of class, friendship, and resilience through the lens of working parenthood in America,” says director Mugavero.
“This play is such a poignant look at both the absurdity and profundity that follows in the wake of a newborn for those first few weeks of delirious bliss and unimaginable terror. I can't wait for audiences to laugh and cry with us.”

Cry It Out features the talent of Taryn Pearce (Jessie), Gabriela Noble (Lina), Kira Dorrian (Adrienne), and Varun Kainth (Mitchell), with a creative team that includes Ken Michels (Set Design), Gwyn Skone (Lighting Design), William French (Sound Design), Ali Kidder-Mostrom (Costume Design), and Chandria Danelle (Property Design).

Murder on the Orient Express - a fresh telling of a classic murder mystery by the Driftwood Players

Friday, September 15, 2023

Murder on the Orient Express runs September 15 to October 8, 2023. Thursdays - Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm.

Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of the year, but by the morning it is one passenger fewer. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed eight times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, the passengers rely on detective Hercule Poirot to identify the murderer – in case he or she decides to strike again.

By Kindle Carpp

As we settled into our seats the first set was in the foreground of the stage. I was surprised that it didn’t look much like a train. But the art deco pillars that framed the stage set the time frame before a word was spoken

As the lights dimmed a scene began to play off stage, heard but not seen. Then Hercule Poirot, played by David Hayes, entered from the theatre lobby and up onto the stage.  Addressing the audience, he began to explain the mystery we were about to witness.

Turning to the set, which I then realized was a restaurant, he transitioned from a narrator to a character. In a dreamlike sequence the cast walked casually on stage and cleared the furniture to the wings. and the story begun in earnest.

  • Left to Right: Kim Ferse, Skye Stafford, Karli Reinbold, Landon Whitbread, Carol Richmond, Elora Coble, David Hayes
  • Photo Credit: Dale Sutton of Magic Photography

The curtains opened on an ingenious set design, built on two double sided sets on casters. It was a simple solution for a limited space. In the background vintage footage ran, showing the view from the train and giving the set depth and perspective. Really very clever!

The experienced cast did an excellent job with a few real stand-out performances. Kim Ferse played Mrs. Helen Hubbard in a way that was both campy and charming. Brian Harper and Sky Stafford embraced their characters but knew how to share the stage to allow their fellow cast members to shine.

David Hayes (Hercule Poirot)

David Hayes was an excellent casting choice for Hercule Poirot. I found him to be a delight.

A highlight for me was Brandon Jepson’s eyebrows, an inspired bit of levity. Watch for them in the second act.

This is a fresh production with innovative touches throughout.

Edmonds Driftwood Players announces 2023 Scholarship winners

Wednesday, July 19, 2023

Edmonds, WA – July 17, 2023 – Following Board approval on June 26, 2023, Edmonds Driftwood Players is proud to announce our two scholarship recipients.

Ari Lemley is recipient of the Ralph Eaton Technical Scholarship and Elise McFarland is recipient of the Theatre Arts Scholarship. Each will be awarded $500 payable to their school of choice.

The 2023 Theatre Arts Scholarship was generously funded by an anonymous donor to honor and acknowledge the over 20 years of service of EDP’s longtime member, Joanne Branch.

The Ralph Eaton Technical Scholarship honors a long-time member who spent many hours designing and/or building sets and was our volunteer Technical Director for many years.

Ari Lemley
Ari Lemley
is a 2023 graduate of Edmonds Heights K-12 with plans to attend Western Washington University to pursue a BA majoring in Theatre. Ari is no stranger to EDP having attended our Teen Troupe Summer Camp from 2016 to 2019. Ari intends to pursue additional education to further his skills as an actor, director, and teacher.

His passion is to teach others the joy of theater. “I think it would be very good for the kids to have a queer role model in their lives, especially because theater draws in so many queer kids.”

Throughout, he has demonstrated an ability to lead his peers in work ethic, generosity in acting and off stage, and immense intellectual curiosity.
Working with Ari has been a pleasure from his first audition. He is charismatic, humble, and able… and an asset to every cast and ensemble in which he is placed.
--Christopher Puckett, Voice Instructor at Edmonds Heights K-12.

Elise McFarland
Elise McFarland
is entering her 3rd year at University of North Carolina School of the Arts working toward her BFA in Acting. Elise also attended EDP’s 2019 Teen Troupe Summer Camp as well as performing in Mr. Scrooge on EDP’s Mainstage in 2016.

“There were many times this past year where I doubted my ability as an actor, and consequently my worth as a person. But keeping in mind before I went onstage that what I was doing was not about me, but about connecting to other people and making them feel less alone, ultimately allowed my brain to transform those thoughts into whispers instead of screams.”
“During a time where the UNCSA community lost a member of our student body to suicide, I experienced a newfound urge within myself to create work that I was proud of, partly because I’d struggled all of first semester with how I felt about myself as an actor and I wanted to change my trajectory, but mostly because the person we lost no longer had the opportunity to share their art with the world.”

Edmonds Driftwood Players is a volunteer-based 501(c)(3) non-profit community theatre with the mission to produce live theatre that entertains, enriches, and engages the community. Established in 1958, it is one of the oldest continually operating community theatres in Washington State.

Edmonds Driftwood Players announce 65th Season

Wednesday, June 28, 2023

Edmonds, WA – June 27, 2023 – Edmonds Driftwood Players has announced their upcoming 2023-2024 Season 65, which will include four mainstage productions.
We feel incredibly grateful to be headed into our 65th Season of theatre in Edmonds and look forward to celebrating with the community!

Season subscriptions go on sale for return subscribers on July 10 and for new subscribers on July 24. Tickets for individual shows go on sale August 1.

Edmonds Driftwood Players is a volunteer-based, non-profit community theatre with the mission to produce live theatre that entertains, enriches, and engages the community. Established in 1958, it is one of the oldest continually operating community theatres in Washington State.

In addition to mainstage productions, they produce an annual Festival of Shorts, which consists of eight short plays centered around a different theme each year. The finalists are selected from hundreds of playwright submissions from around the world by volunteer reading groups who were given blind copies for rating. Past winners have later been developed into full-length award-winning plays!

EDP also has an education program which includes camps for students to learn the ins and outs of putting on a production as well as classes and workshops.

Additionally, Take a Kid to the Theatre is our outreach program that allows us to share the joy and wonder of live theatre with families in shelters and transitional housing. We also provide scholarships for students interested in pursuing theatre arts.

2023-2024 Season 65 Mainstage Productions

Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, adapted by Ken Ludwig (September 15-October 8, 2023)

Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka (November 24-December 17, 2023)

Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka follows enigmatic candy manufacturer, Willy Wonka, as he stages a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whomever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats: the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. The children must learn to follow Mr. Wonka's rules in the factory... or suffer the consequences.

Ada and the Engine by Lauren Gunderson (March 1-17, 2024)

As the British Industrial Revolution dawns, young Ada Byron Lovelace (daughter of the flamboyant and notorious Lord Byron) sees the boundless creative potential in the “analytic engines” of her friend and soulmate Charles Babbage, inventor of the first mechanical computer. Ada envisions a whole new world where art and information converge— a world she might not live to see. A music-laced story of love, friendship, and the edgiest dreams of the future. Jane Austen meets Steve Jobs in this poignant pre-tech romance heralding the computer age.

The Savannah Sipping Society by Jones, Hope, Wooten (May 3-19, 2024)

In this delightful, laugh-a-minute comedy, four unique Southern women, all needing to escape the sameness of their day-to-day routines, are drawn together by Fate—and an impromptu happy hour—and decide it’s high time to reclaim the enthusiasm for life they’ve lost through the years. Over the course of six months, filled with laughter, hilarious misadventures, and the occasional liquid refreshment, these middle-aged women successfully bond and find the confidence to jumpstart their new lives. Together, they discover lasting friendships and a renewed determination to live in the moment—and most importantly, realize it’s never too late to make new old friends.

Showtimes are Thursdays-Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm.
