Edmonds Driftwood Players – 12th Annual Festival of Shorts

Friday, June 9, 2023

University of Washington School of Drama announces 2023-24 season

Saturday, June 3, 2023

SEATTLE—The School of Drama at the University of Washington main campus is excited to share our 2023-24 public season. We invite you to join us as we continue to showcase the creative talent of our student artists.

This year we are presenting five productions: The Moors, by Jen Silverman, Vanity Fair, by Kate Hamill, A Thick Description of Harry Smith, Vol. 1, by Carlos Murillo, The Adding Machine, a newly devised adaptation of the Elmer Rice classic, and our ongoing series focusing developmental projects: the Producing Artists Laboratory.

All of our stages are laboratories where students can apply the skills they are learning in our classrooms. To support the breadth of their learning, our season will showcase works in progress, works of varying style and genre, and experimental works, all intended to prepare students to advance into the professional theatre arena.

The 2023-24 public season features five thought-provoking productions, each offering a unique theatrical experience:

THE MOORS
By Jen Silverman
Directed by Leah Adcock-Starr
Venue: Meany Studio Theatre
Performances: NOV. 2 – NOV. 12
Previews: OCT. 28 & 31

Experience The Moors — an ingenious dark comedy that subverts the tropes of the 19th-century Gothic romance. Contemporary Queer playwright Jen Silverman has brilliantly crafted eight characters (six women, a dog, and a moor hen) who each contend with desire, fear, and transformation. In their struggle to change, we recognize their love and their desperate need to be seen.

A THICK DESCRIPTION OF HARRY SMITH (Vol. 1)

By Carlos Murillo
Directed by Nick O’Leary
Venue: Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse
Performances: JAN. 19 – JAN. 28
Previews: JAN. 13 and 17

A Thick Description of Harry Smith, a proto-psychedelic medicine show, takes a wild ride through the life, work, and times of filmmaker, musicologist, painter, anthropologist, collector, occultist, and fabulist, Harry Everett Smith. Best known for editing the seminal Anthology of American Folk Music, Smith's peculiar life is an emblem of American bohemian life in the 20th Century.

VANITY FAIR
By Kate Hamill (based on the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray)
Directed by Kate Drummond
Venue: Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse
Performances: MAR. 7 – MAR. 16
Previews: MAR. 2 & 5

In Vanity Fair, Becky, orphaned and disadvantaged, is cunning and ambitious, while Amelia, born into privilege, is well-intentioned but naive. As they each strive to secure love, success, and stability in the patriarchy of early 19th-century London they face many obstacles to their dreams.

As their parallel stories unfold, the audience is forced to confront our own hypocrisy and the complexities of a world that often rewards those who break the rules. Through Becky and Amelia’s travails, this thrilling, highly theatrical (im)morality play explores the flexibility of our morals when faced with the harsh realities of our lives.

THE ADDING MACHINE
a new adaptation of the Elmer Rice classic
Directed by Ryan Guzzo Purcell
Venue: Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse
Performances: MAY 21 – JUN. 2
Previews: MAY 18 and 21

In this unique adaptation of "The Adding Machine," the unremarkable Mr. Zero, an accountant, is unexpectedly replaced by an adding machine. What follows is a series of remarkable events during and after his life that are outside of his control--or are they? In this devised adaptation, Director Ryan Purcell and student artists will examine the present-day emergence of artificial intelligence in the context of Rice’s prescient expressionistic classic of the 1920s.

Producing Artists Laboratory
Spring 2024
Venue: TBA
Performances: TBA
Previews: TBA

The Producing Artists Lab is an opportunity for student artists to share exploratory or developmental projects with the public. The Audience members may see a wider range in the levels of production and often more vigorous artistic risk-taking in these Lab productions. Stay tuned for the title announcement in early Spring 2024.

Subscriptions and single tickets will be available for purchase starting September 15, 2023. Visit https://drama.washington.edu/ for updates on ticket sales and to learn more about the School of Drama and our season.

The Phoenix Theatre presents its Season 15 closing show – and it stars some community favorites! Beat the heat and take in some true talent with Glorious!, June 2 – June 25, 2023.

This hilarious comedy tells the story of the worst singer in the world. In 1940s New York, the performer who everyone wanted to see live was Florence Foster Jenkins, an enthusiastic soprano whose pitch was far from perfect.

Known as "the first lady of the sliding scale," she warbled and screeched her way through the evening to an audience who mostly fell about with laughter. But this delusional and joyously happy woman paid little attention to her critics, instead she was surrounded by a circle of devoted friends who were almost as eccentric as she was.

"First lady of the sliding scale"
Opens Friday at The Phoenix Theatre
Based on a true story, the play spins from Florence's charity recitals, to extravagant balls, to her bizarre recording sessions - ultimately leading to a moment of personal triumph that is sure to inspire you to clear your throat and follow your bliss!

Director Eric Lewis and his cast are hard at work getting this show on its feet - you'll see some familiar faces, along with some new ones.

Says Lewis, "The cast consists of Phoenix Theatre luminaries.” He is surely referencing Melanie Calderwood and Susan Connors – legends in their own right – along with regular favorites James Lynch and Jay Jenkins. The Phoenix also welcomes fresh faces Nicola Amos and Laura Knight.

"It's a ridiculous and noble story," remarks the director,

"Madame Florence (She preferred to be called that) may have been unable to accurately assess her abilities but her courage and spirit were what propelled her to a 'triumph' at Carnegie Hall.

"Movies, Plays, and books are still being written about her life (approximately 80 years later), and she has become a legend, maybe not the way she would have wanted, but still a legend."

I Hate Hamlet now running at The Phoenix Theatre through April 30, 2023

Sunday, April 9, 2023

The Phoenix Theatre presents I Hate Hamlet, written by Paul Rudnik and directed by Keith Dahlgren.

THE QUESTION IS WHO YOU WANT TO BE… OR NOT BE.

The Phoenix Theatre is once again offering up a comedic twist on a classic!

Start your spring off right with a masterclass on the fear of live performance with I Hate Hamlet, through April 30, 2023.

Andrew Rally seems to have it all: celebrity and acclaim from his starring role in a hit television series; a rich, beautiful girlfriend; a devoted agent; the perfect New York apartment; and the chance to play Hamlet in Central Park.
There are, however, a couple of glitches in paradise.

Andrew’s series has been canceled; his girlfriend is clinging to her virginity with unyielding conviction; and he has no desire to play Hamlet.

When Andrew’s agent reminisces about her brief romance with John Barrymore many years ago in Andrew’s apartment. This prompts a seance to summon his ghost.

From the moment Barrymore returns, dressed in high Shakespearean garb, Andrew’s life is no longer his own. Barrymore, fortified by champagne and ego, presses Andrew to accept the part and fulfill his actor’s destiny.
The action becomes more complicated with the entrance of Andrew’s deal-making friend from LA, offering Andrew a fabulous new TV deal worth millions of dollars. The laughs compound as Andrew wrestles with his conscience, his sword, a wild Barrymore spirit, and his fear of failing as Hamlet in Central Park.

Director Keith Dahlgren says "This is a play about the joy of theatre and performance, as well as the fear of it – and the fear is real. Anyone who has performed knows the dread of missing your cue, forgetting your lines, or looking like a wooden puppet up there in front of a crowd of people.”

However, I Hate Hamlet also communicates the beauty of the shared experience of live performance. “The thrill of getting a laugh… the silence of an audience as they listen closely… the warmth of applause.

After the previous three years of the pandemic, we need to gather together for this shared experience,” Dahlgren continued, “It’s pretty easy to direct, [the actors] all understand what they need to do and are having fun. So sit back and be transported to the 1990s and enjoy yourself!"

I Hate Hamlet, by Paul Rudnick, is directed by Keith Dahlgren and produced with permission of Dramatist Play Service, Inc.

  • April 7 - April 30
    • Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm
    • Sundays at 2pm
    • The theater will be closed on Sunday, April 9th
  • Purchase tickets here
    • Adults $25.00
    • Seniors 55+ / Students / US Military and Veterans $20.00

Taproot Theatre adds honey tasting from Shoreline bees to its latest production

Tuesday, March 14, 2023

The latest production from Taproot Theatre in north Seattle is As It is in Heaven.

“’Tis a gift to be simple,” sing the Shakers of Pleasant Hill, the setting of Arlene Hutton’s As It is in Heaven, a regional premiere at Taproot Theatre.

But as the young women in the community claim new spiritual gifts, Sister Hannah and the other elders must judge whether these gifts are real or rebellion. Set during America’s surge of Utopian communities, the play wrestles with belief and doubt in a swiftly changing world.

Based on true events, the play asks questions about faith and tradition and what we do when someone’s encounter with the divine is beyond our own understanding. Directed by Marianne Savell, the show opens on March 24, 2023 and runs through April 22, 2023.

The Shakers brought Italian bees to the U.S. in the 19th century, and you can experience the simple pleasure of honey from Rainy Day Bees on April 7, 2023 at 6:30pm at this exclusive add-on event for patrons who have tickets to Taproot Theatre’s As It is in Heaven that evening.

For only $10, join Peter Nolte of Rainy Day Bees in Shoreline to taste the unique flavors of 5 honeys produced by small beekeepers. You’ll explore the flavors from different flowers and regions while learning about beekeeping and threats to bee health.

Tickets are available online at taproottheatre.org, by phone at 206-781-9707 (Tue-Sat, noon-5:00pm), or in person at 204 N 85th St. Ticket prices for As It is in Heaven range from $25-56 with discounts available for students, seniors, active military, 25 and Under and TeenTix members. Performances of The Arabian Nights at Shoreline Community College continue this weekend

Tuesday, March 7, 2023

The Arabian Nights is a full-length drama adapted for the stage by Mary Zimmerman from Powys Mather's translation of The Book of Thousand Nights and One Night.

Passionate, playful, provocative storytelling, The Arabian Nights examines the fascinating tale of Scheherazade.

In the wake of discovering his queen's infidelity, cruel King Shahryar has soured on all womankind. Then theres no one left but clever Scheherazade. Can her 1001 cliffhanger stories keep her alive?

The Arabian Nights tells the tale of Scheherazade's nightly telling of evocative tales. 1001 nights later the storyteller and listener are forever changed. A twelve-member cast enacts Scheherazade's tales of love, lust, comedy, and dreams.

Scheherazade's cliffhanger stories prevent her husband, the cruel ruler Shahryar, from murdering her, and after 1,001 nights, Shahryar is cured of his madness, and Scheherazade returns to her family.

The Arabian Nights at Shoreline Community College

Monday, February 13, 2023

The Arabian Nights is a full-length drama adapted for the stage by Mary Zimmerman from Powys Mather's translation of The Book of Thousand Nights and One Night.

Passionate, playful, provocative storytelling, The Arabian Nights examines the fascinating tale of Scheherazade.

In the wake of discovering his queens infidelity cruel King Shahryar has soured on all womankind.

This adaptation offers a wonderful blend of the lesser-known tales from Arabian Nights with the recurring theme of how the magic of storytelling holds the power to change people. Rebelling against the repression of Victorian Society, Dr. Jekyll unleashes a libidinous monster on the world.

This hilarious spoof of the classic story by Robert Louis Stevenson will keep you in stitches as this fast-paced comedy takes the stage.

Director Eric Lewis and the incredible cast are putting finishing touches on this madcap comedy this week.

"We are having so much fun in rehearsals. We are in the middle of creating exciting fight scenes that are sure to thrill," says Lewis. "It's one of those plays that is really hard to put a label to - definitely funny; some old-school slapstick; some dark comedy; and delightful stage effects. The cast and crew are great - it is a pleasure to work with such talented people."

Featuring local favorites Ingrid Sanai Buron, Melanie Calderwood, and Susan Connors, this show is sure to sell quickly!
