Shorewood One Acts on Thursday and Friday - free admission for good entertainment

Thursday, December 15, 2022

The Shorewood drama group is staging its One Acts this Thursday and Friday, December 15-16, 2022 at 7pm at the Shorewood Black Box Theatre, 17300 Fremont Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133.

The performances are free although they would appreciate donations. The One Acts are very short (one act!) playlets each performed by usually one to five drama students. Many of the plays are created by the actors with themes about their lives - both serious and comic.

It's a kaleidoscope of performances, one after another. They range from kid humor to one hair away from professional. And either way, it's only one act.

It's all good fun and a great way to spend your evening.

Dashing Through The Snow at the Phoenix Theatre

Monday, November 21, 2022

Dashing Through The Snow
written by Jesse Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jaime Wooten
directed by Renee Gilbert

It’s four days before Christmas in the tiny town of Tinsel, Texas, and a colorful parade of eccentric guests arrive at the Snowflake Inn and deck the halls with holiday hilarity. Trina, the harried yet upbeat innkeeper of this BnB, has more than she can handle coping with these nuttier-than-a-fruitcake lodgers.

Hoyt and his sister, Donna Jo, make the mistake of trying to end a thirty-year feud between their curmudgeonly aunts, Ennis and Della. Ainsley and Lenora, actors from a touring production of A Christmas Carol, descend on the Inn to fulfill a promise.

Add to this an ill-advised romantic rendezvous between Mrs. Claus and one of Santa’s elves, a demanding guest who refuses to leave, not to mention a tipsy housekeeper, and it’s clear it will take more than a kiss under the mistletoe to keep Trina’s spirits merry and bright.

But a spur-of-the-moment Christmas Eve wedding that brings together the fabulous Futrelle sisters and their best friend, Raynerd, takes a surprising and delightful turn that leads to a laugh-'til-your-sides-ache climax, changing all their lives forever. You’ll swear this family-friendly Jones / Hope / Wooten Christmas comedy is more fun than a joyride in a one-horse open sleigh!

October 25th performance of My Body No Choice at Edmonds College

Thursday, October 13, 2022

Ballyhoo Theatre and Black Box at Edmonds College present My Body No Choice. One performance only, October 25, 2022, 7:30pm at Black Box at Edmonds College (Mukilteo Hall), 20310 68th Ave W,  Lynnwood WA 98036.

In June 2022, reproductive rights took a giant leap backwards when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In the United States, we can drive when we turn 16, and vote when we turn 18. But we no longer have the bodily autonomy to make the choices that will impact us the most.

In My Body No Choice, eight of America’s most exciting female playwrights share what choice means to them, through the telling of fiction and non-fiction stories rooted in personal experience; theirs or a friend’s.

Because this is a time when women need to tell their stories. My Body No Choice is a commission of Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. This reading is presented in coordination with a full production at Arena that will be Molly Smith's final production as the company's Artistic Director.

My Body No Choice will explore the importance of bodily autonomy, from the ability to choose - or not - to have an abortion, to the freedom to choose one's body size, to making a decision around when to end one's life.

The short stories are both fiction and non-fiction by eight of America's most exciting female writers, who are: Lee Cataluna(Home of the Brave), Fatima Dyfan (Woolly Mammoth Theatre New Work Fellow), Lisa Loomer (Roe), Dael Orlandersmith (Stoop Stories), Sarah Ruhl (In the Next Room, or the vibrator play), Mary Hall Surface (Perseus Bayou), V (formerly Eve Ensler) (The Vagina Monologues), and Anonymous.

These tremendous artists and their monologues represent a rich diversity of theatrical storytelling and personal experiences.

Admission is FREE, however, reservations are required. Ticket link at ballyhootheatre.org

Some of this material may be too sensitive for younger children. Recommended ages are 14 and up.

As If Theatre Company (AITC) presents Larry Shue’s classic comedy The Foreigner October 6-23, 2022. This will be AITC’s sixth production since opening in 2019.

In this hilarious farce, Englishman Charlie Baker wants to escape his boring life and marital strife by disappearing to a fishing lodge in rural Georgia. Painfully shy, he begrudgingly adopts the persona of a foreigner who doesn't understand English.

Under the direction of Ken Michels, AITC’s production embraces the undeniable humor in the script while acknowledging the prescient themes of the play.

“We love a solid comedy,” says AITC’s Artistic Director Cindy Giese French. “and this is one of the most solid comedies around. But this play can go so much deeper than just the laughs because it shines a light on what being considered an outsider really looks like in this country. We know it’ll be entertaining, but we also hope our audiences leave with a lot to talk about.”

The cast of The Foreigner includes Jason Gingold, Jalyn Green, Sonya Rose Usher, Cindy Giese French, Mike Tucker, John Clark, and Terry Boyd. Creative designers are Ken Michels (set design), Gwyn Skone (lighting design), and William French (sound design).

A special note from the Director, Adam Othman:

“Returning to the Scene of the Crime…I was first introduced to The Mousetrap when I was first cast in my high school's production, playing the role of Christopher Wren. I immediately fell in love with the colorful characters and clever plot twists and turn brilliantly crafted by Agatha Christie.

"In 2006 I returned to The Mousetrap with Edmonds Driftwood Players, now portraying the role of Mr. Paravicini, another mysterious guest. It has been 16 years since EDP has staged this classic who-done-it, and I was thrilled when they asked me to return and direct this production.

"As a director, I love the challenge of working with the cast to develop these multifaceted characters and taking the audience on this incredible ride where every character could be the killer or even the next victim."
