UW Drama shines a light on Rosalind Franklin, scientist who unlocked the secrets of DNA

Wednesday, January 5, 2022

Come see Anna Ziegler’s award-winning play Photograph 51

Jan. 27 – Feb. 6, 2022

The Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse Theatre

Tickets: $5-$20

SEATTLE — Rosalind Franklin knew that she would face resistance as one of few women scientists in her field. And yet, she did her work anyway—unlocking the secrets of the DNA molecule and forever changing the study of molecular biology and genomics. It’s a story that captivates Amanda Rountree, second-year MFA director at the UW School of Drama. This winter, Rountree directs Photograph 51, a play inspired by the remarkable scientist.

“Franklin chose to be bigger than the negative voices in her way, even when she was excluded from dining with male colleagues, even when people condescended her in unimaginable ways. She still showed up to work in these male-dominated spaces as a woman—as a Jewish woman, in fact.”

Almost 70 years after Franklin’s discovery in London, women scientists in both the United Kingdom and the United States still face major barriers. Women comprise approximately half of the workforce in both countries, yet make up only 26-27 percent of STEM workers.

The UW Girls in Science program, Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE), as well as Decolonizing Science (a podcast created by PhD biology student Ashley Paynter) are just a few efforts happening in the University of Washington community to address systemic inequities in science.

At the UW School of Drama, students are preparing to contribute in another way: illuminating a story that’s about science, but important for anyone with DNA.

Only Franklin’s male colleagues received credit for deciphering the density structure of the DNA molecule for many years. Only after Franklin’s death did her work become more widely known.

“I think that there are, and have been, many Rosalind Franklins in the world—unsung women and untold stories,” Rountree said. “It’s great to see her story getting more attention and recognition.”

The University of Washington School of Drama develops innovative and courageous artists and scholars poised to be the creative leaders of tomorrow. Degrees offered include an MFA in acting, design, and directing, a BA in Drama, and a PhD in theatre history and criticism.

UW School of Drama: In The Importance of Being Earnest, actors explore the art of identity

In The Importance of Being Earnest,
actors explore the art of identity

Nov. 12 – 21, 2021

The Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse Theatre
4045 University Way NE, Seattle

Tickets: $5-$20

SEATTLE—What shapes your identity? How do you express who you are in public versus private spheres? What if who you are doesn't align with society's expectations? These are some of the ideas that Kelly Kitchens, stage director for The Importance of Being Earnest at the UW School of Drama, is exploring with glee.

Kitchens and her team of student artists and designers present this cheeky Oscar Wilde comedy at the Jones Playhouse Nov. 12-21. Masks and vaccination (or proof of a negative COVID-19 test) are required for entry. More information about safety protocols is available on the ArtsUW website.

Ahead of its time for the 1890s, Earnest pokes at Victorian decorum with a tale of two carefree bachelors, Jack and Algernon. When Algernon discovers that Jack has been posing as someone named Ernest to escape to the city, he promptly travels to Jack’s country estate to pose as the fictional figure himself — much to the delight of audiences.

“These characters are constantly crafting and curating identity for both private fulfillment and public consumption,” Kitchens said. “If they had social media in the 19th century, I would absolutely follow them out of sheer curiosity and supreme delight.”

This production merges a Victorian story with a sleek, contemporary aesthetic reminiscent of a Vanity Fair photoshoot. As the UW School of Drama presents Wilde’s story of role-playing and double identities, the actors themselves will be stepping outside of roles they might normally play.

“Your identity encompasses who you are,” said Catherine Heiner, the show’s dramaturg and a third-year doctoral student. “But in curating an identity or a public persona, we want to emphasize how liberating that is. It's aspirational — a chance to embody everything you want to be. It can be a form of self-expression."

As a conduit between the playwright and the production, Heiner supports Kitchens' vision with research and resources throughout the rehearsal process. The two collaborators have been grateful for the chance to work in-person with fellow artists again, albeit masked and with COVID-19 safety protocols in place.

The Importance of Being Earnest is the School of Drama’s first live, in-person performance after the nearly two-year disruption of the pandemic. And it might be just the ticket to bring some levity to this challenging time.

“With the sheer brilliance of Wilde's sparkling language and the delightful comic stylings when brought to life, the evening promises to drink like a delicious glass of champagne. Cheers!" Kitchens said.

Driftwood Players present a holiday radio show

Friday, December 18, 2020

A pre-record Holiday Radio show will be presented on Facebook and YouTube

Wednesday, December 23 at 7pm
Thursday, December 24 at 5pm
Friday, December 25 at 12pm

Admission is free - donations are always appreciated.

’Twas the night before the Christmas show,
and not a director was volunteering all through the house.

In this secular Christmas play, a group of players suddenly discovers they have no director to help them prepare their skit for tomorrow night’s Christmas variety show!

The president of the city council calls in school volleyball coach Bailey Cox to direct them. Bailey agrees, figuring it will be a simple task. She figures the group must already have their skit worked out for tomorrow night, right?

Wrong! Besides not having an act, Bailey discovers they don’t have any talent!

But there’s an even bigger problem: all they do is eat donuts and bicker...and they’re the city council!

The coach gives them her best pep talk, to no avail. Up against the wall, she’s at her wit’s end, and she’s running out of time.

How she quickly gets the city council to cooperate and produce a delightful retelling of the classic Christmas poem is indeed a Christmas miracle.

Unleashed 2020, New Pulp Stories for the 21st Century features brand new works by playwrights of color, using genre stories (horror, SF, fantasy) to tell strong, plot driven stories

It runs November 10 to 14, 2020, at 7pm, online. Their November 14 play, Mustard Seeds, is being co-produced by The Hansberry Project.

Pork Filled Productions has set directors and dates for its third Unleashed festival, a celebration of new plays by POC playwrights. These scripts push past the bounds of conventional theatre to tell exciting new BIPOC-led stories in genres like horror, science fiction, fantasy and beyond.

Directors include Anny Ly, Grecia Leal Pardo, Zenaida Rose Smith, Nabra Nelson, Kiefer Harrington and Valerie Curtis Newton. Shows are at 7pm.

Tickets are available online at https://pork-filled.ticketleap.com

Playwrights: (Top) Julia Izumi, Michelle Tyrene Johnson, Jesse Jou
(Bottom) Greg Lam, Mercy Floresislas, Patrick Zhang

The lineup begins Tuesday, November 10, with I Thought I Was Safe, by Patrick Zhang, directed by Anna Ly, with dramaturgy by Daniel Rector. An amalgamation of the noir and horror genres, I Thought I Was Safe explores multigenerational immigrant trauma as it converges with decaying urban America.

Next, on Wednesday, November 11, will be a night of shorts. The Golden Disc, by Greg Lam, directed by Gecia Leal Pardo, dramaturgy by Lydia Diamond, is about two friends who have their day interrupted by the sudden arrival of an alien object. For the Living by Chie-Hoon Lee, directed by Zenaida Rose Smith, dramaturgy by Lydia Diamond, introduces us to a world of scientific reincarnation, and asks profound questions of where one life ends, and another begins. A third short will be announced at a future date.

On Thursday, November 12, PFP presents 100 Hungry Ghosts, by Jesse Jou, directed by Nabra Nelson, dramaturgy by Gavin Reub. Graham lives on the most haunted road in America. After multiple tragedies upend his life, he begins to see spirits, as his neighbors’ own painful histories surface. Will he learn to let go of grief or will he meet a grisly end at the hands of one hundred hungry ghosts?

Friday, November 13 sees miku and the gods, by Julia Izumi, directed by Kiefer Harrington, dramaturgy by Stephanie Kim-Bryan. Miku wants to be a god. Ephraim wants to be an Olympian. Grandma wants to remember. And Shara wants people to just include him in the conversation, you know? miku, and the gods is an epic and small adventure that braids friendship, death, and power beyond what one could ever desire.

Finally, the festival caps off with a co-production with The Hansberry Project: Mustard Seeds, by Michelle Tyrene Johnson, directed by Valerie Curtis-Newton, with dramaturgy by Martine Kei Green-Rogers. On the banks of the Missouri River, a group of researchers gather at a former site of the Underground Railroad where slaves fought for their lives and swam for freedom. Under a full moon, old friends and colleagues are at each other’s throats as they struggle to reconcile their past. Nearby, spirits watch, as spirits do, trying to make sense of these mortals and find a way out.

The oldest Asian American theatre group in the Pacific Northwest, Pork Filled Productions centers Asian American and POC artists to imagine fantastical, inclusive and FUN universes. Through the genres of science fiction, noir, fantasy, steampunk, horror, and more, we envision a bright universe informed by diverse experiences and perspectives, populated by larger than life characters, where everyone’s story can be told. PFP’s season is supported by 4Culture and the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, Unleashed receives support from the Hansberry Project.

Pork Filled Productions is fiscally sponsored by Shunpike, the 501(c)(3) non-profit agency that provides independent arts groups in Washington with the services, resources and opportunities they need to forge their own paths to sustainable success.
