Review by Kindle Carpp
Murder Inn is set in New England, at the dilapidated eighteenth-century Bardsley Inn, supposedly haunted by Marco, a knife-throwing poltergeist. A group of tourists, on a tour - Ghosts and Ghouls of New England - is forced by a storm to make an unscheduled stop at the inn.

What looks to be an unpleasant and uncomfortable detour soon turns into a night of mayhem and madness as knives begin to pop up. As the storm builds and the body count rises, the survivors try to figure out who done it. And even more important - who’s likely to have it done to them next?

This engaging play begins when our stranded guests arrive at the Barnsley to discover it is a ramshackle inn which has closed for the season, opening only because of local flooding and landslides due to the rain.

The proprietress maintains that the inn is haunted by her long ago murderous ancestor, while her son is skeptical that the ghost even exists.

The set design by Thomas LeClair stands out, setting the tone and scene of the decrepit inn. Look for the small details such as peeling wallpaper and water-stained walls. One aspect of the set that I particularly enjoyed was a door masquerading as a bookcase with an authentic-looking collection of books.

Everyone in this large cast performed well but there were a few actors who shone.
  • Tina Devrin embodied the exasperation of customer service when you really hate the customer.
  • Ingrid Sanai Buron embodied the mean girl trophe to perfection.
  • Jennifer Nielsen did a wonderful job of presenting as the benign and uncomplicated retired school marm who just happens to be sharp as a tack.
  • Rachael Risbell Walters really committed to her character’s kooky bit without upstaging the rest of the cast.
And the chemistry build between Olivia Alderton and Landon Whitbread was timed well and very believable. I literally caught myself “aw-ing” at their cuddling up on the sofa.

Just in time for the Halloween season you can check out Murder Inn and I promise you won’t have any reservations about the experience.

Edmonds Driftwood Players announces 2024 Scholarship winners

Saturday, August 10, 2024

Edmonds WA – August 9, 2024. Following Board approval on July 31, 2024, Edmonds Driftwood Players is proud to announce our 3 scholarship recipients.

Daryna Ilyashenko is the recipient of the Ralph Eaton Technical Scholarship,
Elizabeth Howlett is the recipient of the Theatre Arts Scholarship,
Josh Kretz is the recipient of the AC & Norma Gehrig Memorial Scholarship.

Each will be awarded $1,000 payable to their school of choice.

The Ralph Eaton Technical Scholarship honors a long-time member who spent many hours designing and/or building sets and was our volunteer Technical Director for many years. It was created by his loving wife, Judy Anne Eaton, a longtime member and volunteer.

The Theatre Arts Scholarship has been a long-standing award established in 1988.

The AC & Norma Gehrig Memorial Scholarship was created by our longtime member, volunteer, past board director and office manager, Keith Gehrig to honor his parents.

Daryna Ilyashenko
Daryna Ilyashenko is a 2024 graduate of Meadowdale High School and is planning to pursue a major in acting and original works and minoring in costume construction at Cornish College of The Arts in Seattle.

“Theater has helped me understand myself more, it has taught me my strengths and weaknesses. Due to this Theater community, I was able to grow through being vulnerable. I am so ecstatic to be able to continue my journey and acting at Cornish College of the arts and Seattle.”

"While balancing a lead role and being light crew head, Daryna also managed to keep up her stellar grades, work a part time job, and take care of her younger siblings. Talent is important, of course, and Daryna’s talents are plentiful: but what makes her stand out is her drive to pour her all into anything and everything she does."

-Jacqueline Meyners, Theatre Teacher and Director of Meadowdale Players

2022 Shorecrest graduate
Elizabeth “Bobby” Howlett
Elizabeth “Bobby” Howlett is a 2022 graduate of Shorecrest High School who has completed her sophomore year at USC School of Dramatic Arts with an emphasis on acting for stage & screen, voice, and script analysis.

She hopes to study abroad in London at the British American Dramatic Academy (BADA) for Spring semester and plans to graduate in May 2026.

In her words: “Acting has become a way for me to embrace my uniqueness. I can better show empathy to others both as an actor and a person. This allows me to connect better with characters as an artist, and also collaborate with people with differing perspectives and opinions.”

"I was always delighted with Bobby’s approach to the work. Too often my students fail to wed their joy, freedom and sense of play with the rigor necessary to train in a field this demanding."
-Paul Urcioli, USC School of Dramatic Arts

Josh Kretz
Josh Kretz is a 2023 graduate of Meadowdale High School and has completed his freshman year at Western Washington University where he is working toward a degree in theater arts with a concentration in education with further plans to obtain a master’s in teaching.

“My goal is to become a theater teacher, so I can educate students on the importance of Theater and give them an opportunity to find their voice and become their own advocate. It will also give me a chance to continue being an advocate for autism and to raise awareness and acceptance. I want to continue to work towards making the arts accessible to anyone and everyone.”

"As Marketing crew head, Josh has taken his work one step further, and has developed into an incredible leader. Not only does he delegate tasks, but he leads his team in bonding activities, gets input from each team member on important decisions, and works with each of them to create a powerful and effective marketing strategy. Josh has bloomed as a leader and advocate in the program."
-Jacqueline Meyners, Theatre Teacher and Director of Meadowdale Players

UW School of Drama announces 2024-25 Season

Friday, July 26, 2024

SEATTLE—The School of Drama at the University of Washington is excited to share our 2024-25 public season.

We invite you to join us as we continue to showcase the creative talent of our student artists.

This year we are presenting five productions:

The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht, The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, Thrive, Or What You Will by L M Feldman and two productions as part of our Producing Artists Laboratory Series.

All of our stages are laboratories where students can apply the skills they are learning in our classrooms. To support the breadth of their learning, our season will showcase works in progress, works of varying style and genre, and classical works, intended to prepare students for the current landscape of professional theatre.

The 2024-25 public season features five thought-provoking productions, each offering a unique theatrical experience:

THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE

By Bertolt Brecht. Translated by Alistair Beaton
Directed by Nick O'Leary
Venue: Meany Hall—Studio Theatre
Performances: November 7 - 17, 2024
Previews: November 2 & 5, 7:30 pm

A group of modern-day actors come together with real questions about justice, what is fair, and how to do right when it seems impossible. They present Brecht’s version of an ancient Chinese story with an original pop rock score to breathe new life into these questions in their quest to finding answers. This will be the culminating production for MFA directing candidate, Nick O’ Leary.

THE WINTER'S TALE

Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Kate Drummond
Venue: Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse
Performances: February 13 - 23, 2025
Previews: February 8 & 11, 7:30 pm

An ensemble of performers tells a folk tale of redemption, forgiveness, and reunion. A new adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tale with original music and a highly physical movement language. This will be the culminating production of MFA directing candidate, Kate Drummond.

THRIVE, OR WHAT YOU WILL

Written by L M Feldman
Directed by Adrienne Mackey
Venue: Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse
Performances: May 22 - June 1, 2025
Previews: May 17 & 20, 7:30 pm

An epic tale about Jeanne Baret, a little-known 18th-century figure who sets out on an 11-year voyage as a botanist’s assistant (presenting male) and becomes the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. Thoughtful, funny, and inventive, it explores questions of gender, authority, accountability, and the uncredited contributions of women throughout history.

4 &5. PRODUCING ARTISTS LABORATORY SERIES

Venue: Glenn Hughes Penthouse Theatre
Winter Lab Performances: March 2025
Spring Lab Performances: April 2025

The Producing Artist Laboratory is a unique part of the School of Drama’s production structure where audience members may see more vigorous artistic risk-taking. This year we are presenting two lab productions. The Winter Lab will feature a graduating MFA director’s final project while the Spring Lab will feature first-year MFA directors and designers working alongside second-year MFA actors for the first time. Title will be announced in January 2025.

Subscriptions and single tickets will be available for purchase starting September 10, 2024.

Updates on ticket sales and more about the School of Drama and our season here

Ballyhoo Theatre production at Edmonds Black Box Theatre: Urinetown

Friday, July 19, 2024

Harper Flynt as Hope and Peter Wujek as Bobby.
Urinetown, a musical-comedy satire by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, has played to critical and popular success for over a decade.

Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, environmental collapse, privatization of natural resources, bureaucracy, municipal politics, and musical theatre itself!

Funny and honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America's greatest art forms.

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets.
The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs.
Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

Urinetown is directed by Shileah Corey and choreographed by Jordan King. Performances will be held at the Black Box Theatre at Edmonds College in Lynnwood, July19-28, 2024. For accessible sliding-scale ticketing and more information, go to ballyhootheatre.org.

Shakespeare in the Park in Lynnwood offers ASL interpretation

Sunday, July 14, 2024

LYNNWOOD, WA  - For possibly the first time in Puget Sound’s history of hosting summer Shakespeare in the Park, the City of Lynnwood will offer ASL-interpreted performances at Lynndale Amphitheatre.

The live performances in this summer's 2024 lineup that will be ASL interpreted include:
  • Thursday, July 18 (Two Gentlemen of Verona)
  • Thursday, July 25 (Henry VI Parts 2 & 3)
  • Thursday, August 1 (Twelfth Night)
Performance interpreters Malcolm Reed and Jahmeca Osborne are currently undertaking the linguistic challenge of translating the Bard’s scripts alongside a Deaf Director of Artistic Sign Language (DASL).

Lynnwood is proud to partner with GreenStage, Seattle’s oldest outdoor Shakespeare Company, as well as Wooden O, Seattle Shakespeare Company’s summer program, in a collaborative effort to offer a more accessible outdoor theatre experience for Puget Sound’s Deaf and hard of hearing community members. The 2024 Lynnwood Shakespeare in the Park program is sponsored by Alderwood Terrace Rotary.

Sarah Olson, PRCA Deputy Director, has been collaborating with community members to provide better access to the City's outdoor programming for several summers. Sarah believes, “free, outdoor Shakespeare was designed to be accessible to all ages, all abilities, all incomes, in all zip codes. Through collaboration with our city’s deaf residents, this is a key step towards making sure it’s truly accessible for our region’s Deaf and hard of hearing audiences, too.”

This summer, nearly 90 productions of Shakespeare in the Park are scheduled to perform throughout Puget Sound. This includes Wooden O and GreenStage’s touring troupes performing outdoor plays and a weekend-long Seattle Outdoor Theatre Festival.

Providing interpreted shows is a milestone in Lynnwood’s 45-year tradition of hosting community events, cultural arts, and live performances at the Lynndale Amphitheatre, which is nested within the woods of the city’s largest (and second-oldest) park.

The Lynndale Amphitheatre was renovated in 2014 to provide additional seating and remove barriers to become an ADA accessible program area.

Seattle Rep and Seattle Children’s Theatre to share box office and administrative services

Wednesday, June 19, 2024

Following months of internal conversation and an extensive feasibility study, Seattle Rep and Seattle Children’s Theatre (SCT) have announced the launch of a new resource-sharing initiative, which will see two venerated local institutions and Seattle Center neighbors collaborating on select patron and administrative services.

In a phased rollout beginning July 1, the two theaters will begin sharing staff dedicated to a few key functions. These shared operations—including CRM technology, IT, and videography—will help fill gaps in staffing left by vacant roles across both organizations, provide backup coverage for current employees, and increase sustainability and resilience for both organizations.

These changes will be seamless to the public and have no impact on theatergoers’ experience of attending shows at either playhouse.

Beginning in September, Seattle Rep will also oversee a box office that serves both organizations, and guests will be able to purchase or modify tickets to performances at either theater through a single phone call or email. Throughout the transition process, theatergoers will be able to reach each box office—and then the joint box office—using each theater’s usual contact information.

Meanwhile, “Seattle Children’s Theatre has fewer performances open to the public, serving half of our audience through the Student Access Series, our school field trips,” said SCT’s Managing Director, Kevin Malgesini.
“Our part-time box office team has been able to offer stellar customer service, but with limited resources. Collaborating with Seattle Rep on a shared box office will allow us to offer staff more career pathways and theatergoers a more consistent customer experience.”

The consolidation will be completed by September 26, when Seattle Children’s Theatre launches its 50th Anniversary Season with a production of Cat Kid Comic Club: The Musical and Seattle Rep begins its 62nd Season with Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth.

Streamlining operations through inter-organizational collaboration will be key to ensuring that arts institutions of all sizes—including well-established theaters like Seattle Rep and Seattle Children’s Theatre—can continue to rebuild audiences and work together toward a thriving future.

13th Annual Festival of Shorts!

Edmonds Driftwood Players – announcing 66th season

Saturday, June 15, 2024

Edmonds, WA – June 14, 2024 – Edmonds Driftwood Players is excited to announce our upcoming 2024-2025 Season 66, which will include four mainstage productions. We feel incredibly grateful to be headed into our 66th Season of theatre in Edmonds and look forward to celebrating with the community!

Season subscriptions go on sale for return subscribers on July 9 and for new subscribers on July 23. Tickets for individual shows go on sale July 30.

Edmonds Driftwood Players is a volunteer-based, non-profit community theatre with the mission to produce live theatre that entertains, enriches, and engages the community. Established in 1958, Edmonds Driftwood Players is one of the oldest continually operating community theatres in Washington State.

In addition to mainstage productions, we produce an annual Festival of Shorts, which consists of eight short plays centered around a different theme each year. The finalists are selected from hundreds of playwright submissions from around the world by volunteer reading groups who were given blind copies for rating.

Our annual playwriting festival provides an opportunity for playwrights to have their works brought to life on stage, as well as gain recognition and potential awards. Past winners have later been developed into full-length award-winning plays!

EDP’s New Works program includes First Draft, a staged reading series of nearly production-ready scripts curated by the members of Driftwood After Dark (EDP’s group of local playwrights). With a few rehearsals and minimal staging elements, First Draft readings give audiences an opportunity to experience the sorts of plays not usually included in the Mainstage Season, and to be a part of the development process by participating in post-reading feedback sessions to help playwrights further polish their work.

EDP also has an education program which includes camps for students to learn the ins and outs of putting on a production as well as classes and workshops. Additionally, Take a Kid to the Theatre is our outreach program that allows us to share the joy and wonder of live theatre with families in local shelters and transitional housing.

Edmonds Driftwood Players also offers annual scholarships for deserving students interested in pursuing theatre education at any college, university or technical school in the United States.

2024-2025 Season 66 Mainstage Productions:

Murder Inn (September 13-October 6, 2024)
  • By Howard Voland and Keith McGregor
  • Show Synopsis: Murder Inn is set in New England, at the Barnsley Inn, a dilapidated eighteenth century inn, which is supposedly haunted by Marco, a knife-throwing poltergeist. A group of tourists, on a tour - Ghosts and Ghouls of New England - is forced, by a storm, to make an unscheduled stop at the Barnsley. What looks to be an unpleasant and uncomfortable detour soon turns into a night of mayhem and madness as knives begin to pop up… in the most unexpected places. As the storm builds and the body count rises, the survivors try to figure out who done it. And even more important- who’s likely to have it done to them next?
Miracle on 34th Street, The Play (November 22-December 15, 2024)
  • Adapted by Mountain Community Theater from the novel by Valentine Davies. Based upon the Twentieth Century Fox motion picture Miracle on 34th Street.
  • Show Synopsis: By chance, Kris Kringle, an old man in a retirement home, gets a job working as Santa for Macy's. Kris unleashes waves of good will with Macy's customers and the commercial world of New York City by referring parents to other stores to find exactly the toy their child has asked for. Seen as deluded and dangerous by Macy's vocational counselor, who plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. Especially at stake is one little girl's belief in Santa. In a dramatic decision, the court confirms Kris as the true Santa, allowing Susan and countless other children to experience the joy of childhood fantasy.
Clue: The Musical (March 14-April 6, 2025)
  • Book by Peter DePietro. Music by Galen Blum, Wayne Barker, and Vinnie Martucci. Lyrics by Tom Chiodo. Based on the Parker Brothers’ Board Game
  • Show Synopsis: The internationally popular game is now a fun-filled musical that brings the world’s best-known suspects to life and invites the audience to help solve the mystery: who killed Mr. Boddy, in what room, and with what weapon. The audience receives forms to help them deduce the solution from clues given throughout the fun-filled evening. Three audience members choose from cards representing the potential murderers, weapons, and rooms; there are 216 possible solutions! Only one hard-nosed female detective is qualified to unravel the merry mayhem. Comic antics, witty lyrics, and a beguiling score carry the investigation from room to room. Even after the culprit confesses, a surprise twist delights the audience.
Drinking Habits (May 16-June 8, 2025)
  • By Tom Smith
  • Show Synopsis: Accusations, mistaken identities, and romances run wild in this traditional, laugh-out-loud farce. Two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep the convent's doors open, but Paul and Sally, reporters and former fiancées, are hot on their trail. They go undercover as a nun and priest, but their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun, spurs paranoia throughout the convent that spies have been sent from Rome to shut them down. Wine and secrets are inevitably spilled as everyone tries to preserve the convent and reconnect with lost loves.
