High school girls tennis inspiring community on How to Jamboree!

Wednesday, March 20, 2024

Players and coaches from King's, Shorecrest, Shorewood at the first ever Jamboree

Story and Photos by Kristi Lin

March 16, 2024. Shorewood, Shorecrest, and King's High Schools unite around the lifelong sport of tennis for an inspirational Jamboree!

It was the first time the three teams have come together to play doubles in a fun-filled, low pressure, get to know each other tennis environment, and the first warm and sunny weekend of the spring certainly added to the festivities.

Coach Rob Mann of Shorecrest, Coach Lisa Marquart of King’s, and Coach Arnie Moreno of Shorewood were excited to start what will be a tradition to start the spring tennis season.

Coach Marquart stated, "A Jamboree is a celebration! Seeing our local student-athletes reflect grace, grit, partnership, and athleticism was inspiring as they ‘jammed’ on and off the court as partners sharing a love for tennis!"

Tennis and racquet sports, in general, are taking off in our area for people of all ages and abilities, allowing connection, competition, and sharing.

Coaches Rob Mann (SC), Stacey Pedersen (K), Lisa Marquart (K),
Arnie Moreno (SW), Gunnar Gordan (K)

The coaches and Athletic Directors of Shorewood, Shorecrest, and King's collaborated to provide local high school girl tennis players an opportunity to gather for a doubles Jamboree that connected the next generation of players and families.

"Our program is relatively new and growing! We have a turnout of over 40 girls annually (roughly 10% of our total high school population) - many new to this amazing sport - and the Jamboree helps our student-athletes, and the athletes of our other local schools, experience the sport on valuable levels. Gathering at Shorewood's beautiful facility with fellow tennis-loving players and families was a delight!

"Our team motto, 'New Day – New Ball – Love All,' was the inspiration behind the planning of the Jamboree and the goal of connecting area young people and their families to one another through this lifetime sport. After witnessing the ‘Tennis Jamboree Joy,’ I can see this Jamboree becoming a cherished annual tradition for our area girls' tennis programs!" said Coach Marquart.

Senior Emily Lin, Co-captain for Shorewood, said, “All my teammates really enjoyed playing relaxed matches. There were a lot of smiles and laughter while getting to know the players from Shorecrest and King’s. This definitely needs to be an annual gathering.”

There were clearly no winners or losers at this inspiring event.

All attendees – players, coaches, family members, and friends – embraced the spirit of athletics and vibrant community of Shoreline. In tennis speak: all matches start “Love all”!

Shorewood District 1 Champions

The Shorewood boys tennis team entered the WIAA District 1 tennis tournament with six players.

The top tennis players from WesCo North, WesCo South and Skagit / Whatcom 3A matched up to try and win one of four top places in singles and doubles, in order to earn a berth to next May's WIAA State Tennis Tournament in Vancouver, Washington, at the Vancouver Tennis Center.

Shorewood had the WesCo South number 1 seeded, junior JD Drake and number 3 seeded freshman Sebastian Sanchez.

In doubles, number 1 seeded sophomore Xander Gordon / junior Peter Kosten and number three seeded sophomore Eli Sheffield and sophomore Riley Boyd.

The team had won the WesCo South league championship and finished with an overall record of 14-1.

WesCo North champions Snohomish and Shorewood were favorites to win the District 1 team title. The rain cleared and courts dried on Wednesday October 25, 2023 in time to start the court battles.

Shorewood Boys Tennis Team
with Coach Arnie Moreno
District tournaments across the state are considered to be the first step of the state tennis tournament, on a regional scale. Coach Arnie Moreno reminded the team to approach each match as a challenge and continue to play their consistent style of tennis.

Singles
  • JD Drake won his way into the singles final to face Snohomish's Cade Strickland in a rematch. Drake outplayed Strickland with a strong overall strategy and aggressive game to with the first set 6-2. Strickland battled back with a gritty effort, using long rallies and patience to outlast Drake, and win two sets and the singles top spot.
  • Freshman Sebastian Sanchez, despite his limited high school tennis experience, played every match with a high level of play and won 5th place, as alternate to the state tournament.
Doubles
  • Shorewood's doubles teams were up to the challenge. Gordon and Kosten played a strong aggressive net game to pressure their opponents into many unforced errors and they hit many outright winning shots, to win the doubles championship final.
  • Shorewood's Eli Sheffield and Riley Boyd battled some nagging injuries to win long three set matches to put themselves in to position to win a spot to state. Determination, staying positive and a never give up attitude carried them to win the third-place award in doubles.
Shorewood qualified five players for the state tournament, Drake, Gordon, Kosten, Sheffield and Boyd, with Sanchez earning an alternate spot.

Their high level of play won Shorewood the District 1 Team Championship.

Also, Shorewood's freshman, Sebastian Sanchez, earned third place in singles and the doubles team of sophomores Riley Boyd and Eli Sheffield placed second, losing in the doubles final to teammates, Kosten and Gordon.
