Jackson 4 - Shorewood 3

The Shorewood boys' tennis season started on September 5, 2023 by facing Jackson High School, one of the toughest WesCo 4A powerhouse teams.

Shorewood players knew it would be a challenging test to start their season. They were led by Shorewood co-captains, seniors Sam Borgida and Henry Franey, and number one singles, junior JD Drake. Borgida and Drake are 2022 state tournament qualifiers.

Jackson started the match by jumping out to a 3-1 lead. Shorewood tied the score with key wins in singles, #3 Xander Gordon, #4 Zack Binz and #3 doubles Kristian Hagemeier and Drew Johnson, to tie the score at 3-3.

It all came down to Shorewood number one doubles, sophomores Eli Sheffield and Riley Boyd. After losing their first set 5-7, they made some adjustments to the Jackson team's power game to win a very close second set 7-6 (7-2). With the third set score tied at 4-4, Jackson was able to break Shorewood's' serve to go up 5-4 and then held on to win 6-4.

Jackson won 4-3.

Coach Arnie Moreno told his team he was "proud of how hard they played and their outstanding sportsmanship." He told them that they were "a very good team and they could match up with any tough teams in their season schedule."

Shorewood then played Marysville Getchell, Lake Stevens and Stanwood and defeated each team 7-0, to improve their record to 3-1 in non-conference matches.

They will start their WesCo South conference matches Monday September 18th by hosting Mountlake Terrace, traveling on the 19th to face KingCo 4A North Creek, and play their second conference match at Lynnwood on the 20th.

The Shorewood JV team lost their first match versus Jackson and then came back to win their next three matches by beating Marysville Getchell, Lake Stevens and Stanwood, and improve their record to 3-1.

Shorewood JV Coach JT Maschman says the he is "very proud of the improvement the young Shorewood players are making in every match."

The Shorewood JV team plays the same teams that varsity has in the schedule.

All matches start at 3:30pm.

Update: Four Shorewood tennis players take top honors in Snohomish Summer Smash

Tuesday, July 25, 2023

Shorewood’s Rylie Gettmann took
the Girls Gold Singles title
Last weekend, the eight tennis courts at Snohomish High School were alive with the sounds of competitive tennis, as one of the largest junior tennis tournaments in the state took place.

One hundred eighty-five players traveled from as far South as Seattle and as far North as Bellingham, making their way to the Snohomish Valley to see who would come out on top at the 8th Annual Snohomish Summer Smash presented by Gaffney Construction.

When the smoke cleared, among those holding the coveted Champion t-shirts was Shorewood’s Rylie Gettmann, taking the Girls Gold Singles title to go with the two titles she claimed last year, and Shorewood’s Mari Brittle winning the Girls Silver Singles.

Shorewood’s Mari Brittle
won the Girls Silver Singles
Edmonds-Woodway’s Nalu Akiona grabbed the Boys Gold Doubles title with Cole Balen of Archbishop Murphy, and then followed that up with the Mixed Doubles title with MK Fuller from Holy Names.

Boys Silver Doubles Division Championship was won by Riley Boyd and Eli Sheffield. Both are rising Shorewood sophomores.

Riley Boyd and Eli Sheffield won the
Boys Silver Doubles Division Championship
The Summer Smash was started in 2015 as an alternative for high school players who wanted to take part in competitive tennis but not play in USTA tournaments.

Participation in the four-day tournament has grown exponentially since the Pandemic, with this year’s turnout nearly triple the total from 2019.

Players interested in learning more about the tournament can go to snohomishsummersmash.com.

The Snohomish Summer Smash presented by Gaffney Construction, a four-day tournament for high school players ages 14-18, returns to the Snohomish High School Tennis Courts July 20 - 23, 2023.

Registration costs are $35 for Singles players and $50 for Doubles and Mixed Doubles teams, with proceeds going to the Snohomish High School tennis programs. A record number of players turned out for the tournament last year, with 160 competitors representing over 30 high schools.

Tournament Director Kraig Norris, in conjunction with the Snohomish High School coaches, formed the tournament in 2015 to counter the lack of competitive options for players who aren’t registered with the US Tennis Association.

Working with tennis clubs and high schools throughout the region, Norris said the feedback he’s received from coaches and players is one of excitement at this opportunity to compete.

Registration deadline for the tournament is July 11th, and players interested in participating can go to snohomishsummersmash.com for a printable registration form, or to register online.

Shorewood Girls Tennis Team 3rd at State

Tuesday, May 30, 2023

with Shorewood tennis players who competed at State. Photo by Kristi Lin.

Shorewood boys and girls' tennis made history by taking 6 girls and 5 boys to the WIAA 3A State Tennis Tournament at Vancouver Tennis Center, May 26 and 27, 2023, the largest group of Shorewood players to play at state tournament.

The top players in the state battled it out on the courts for awards to the top four teams and top eight individual players in singles and doubles.

  • The boys' team placed 7th in the state with JD Drake advancing to the consolation semifinals before losing to a very tough Lakeside opponent.
  • The doubles teams of District 1 champions seniors Blake Gettmann and Murray Falkin, junior Sam Borgida and senior Nathan Hagemeier competed but did not advance. They played outstanding tennis versus very tough opponents.

Last Fall season, the boys' team placed second behind a very good Edmonds-Woodway team in WesCo South and placed second as a team, in District 1. Sophomore Drake will return next Fall season to lead a very strong boys' team that had a 12-2 season.

The Shorewood girls team girls' team had a record setting year.

  • Winning the WesCo South League Championship with an undefeated record,
  • Winning the District 1 team championship and
  • Qualifying six girls to the state tournament. Competing in singles Rylie Gettmann and Emily Lin. In doubles, seniors Sophia Serwold and Lindsay Rand, sophomores Mari Brittle and Alex Mignogna.
Shorewood won the WIAA 3rd place team trophy, behind second place Lakeside and first place Mercer Island.

WIAA Team Awards: 1st Mercer Island, 2nd Lakeside, 3rd Shorewood, 4th Interlake

Gettmann and Lin played very tough opponents and kept winning with a strong all court game and mental toughness. Their tennis matches were not only a matchup of high-level tennis skills, but also strategy, mental toughness and physical endurance.

Some matches went over an hour in duration and sometimes close to two hours.

Eventually Gettmann and Lin, teammates and friends, met in their final match for the 4th and 7th place medals

Gettmann came out on top of the all Shorewood matchup, winning 4th place and Lin taking 7th. Gettmann, a sophomore, and Lin, a junior, will return to anchor another very strong Shorewood tennis team next Spring.

Coach Moreno says that during his twenty years as varsity tennis coach, Shorewood has never placed two singles players in the top 8 in the state.

In the team meeting the night before the tournament started, they were reminded of all of the hard work and commitment they have put into their tennis game and to be happy with their accomplishment.
Coach Moreno also told them that every match will be a challenge, as they face the best players from across the state, and enjoy the high level of competition and be proud of being at the state tournament no matter what happens, win or lose.
Coaches and fans from other schools said to Coach Moreno how they enjoyed watching Shorewood tennis players as they were playing great tennis but also scrappy and had a never give up attitude.

Coach Moreno said that Shorewood and the community of Shoreline were well represented by the teams, with not only outstanding play on the courts, but also their great sportsmanship.

Shorewood Girls Tennis District 1 Team Champions

Saturday, May 20, 2023

The Shorewood girls' tennis team sent six players to compete against the best players from Wesco North and Skagit / Whatcom county at the District 1, 3A tennis tournament.

The team won the District 1 team championship.

The top five placers in singles and doubles would qualify for next week's WIAA 3A state tennis tournament at Vancouver Tennis Center in Vancouver, Washington.

Shorewood qualified all six girls for the state tournament!

Sophomore Rylie Gettmann won the singles championship for the second straight year, junior Emily Lin placed third in singles, sophomores Mari Brittle and Alex Mignogna placed second in doubles, and seniors Lindsay Rand and Sophia Serwold placed third in doubles.

This is the second straight state tournament for Gettmann, 8th at state 2023, Lin, Rand and Serwold. The team placed seventh at the state tournament last year.

Shorewood players were challenged in every match with very good opponents, but won with consistent overall skills and strategy. Coach Moreno says they won the close points and matches by being focused and intent on playing hard for every point.

The six Shorewood players may have made Shorewood tennis history by qualifying all six players entered in District, for the first time.

Coach Moreno has been the varsity coach for twenty years and has never had this many qualifiers. He talked with the two former coaches before him, at Shorewood, and they told him they never had this happen. Coach Moreno believes that this team made history for Shorewood tennis.

Shorewood will send 11 players to the state tournament, also a possible Shorewood tennis record, with the five boys team entries, sophomore JD Drake in singles, seniors Murray Falkin and Blake Gettmann, District 1 doubles champs, junior Sam Borgida and senior Nathan Hagememier.

After coming off of a successful undefeated league season, the team was able to qualify six players that were entered to next week's District 1 state qualifying tournament.

Each league school had two singles and two doubles entries with the top five qualifying for District 1.

Shorewood players that will move on in tournament play were: Sophomore Rylie Gettmann, singles champion, and junior Emily Lin who placed third in singles.

Doubles qualifiers were: sophomore Alex Mignogna and sophomore Mari Brittle doubles champions, and seniors Lindsay Rand and senior Sophia Serwold placed second.

Coach Moreno says " consistency has been the key to their success and knowing how to get through the tough points when they lose them and focus on the winning next point."

District 1 will be at Snohomish High School courts on May 16th and 17th with matches starting at 11am. The top five placers will qualify for the WIAA State 3A tennis tournament at Vancouver Tennis Center, Vancouver, Washington. Matches at state start on Friday May 26th at 8:30am and continue on Saturday May 27th.

Coach Moreno says "Congratulations to our Shorewood Girls tennis team!"
