Shorewood boys varsity and JV tennis undefeated during first two weeks of play

Saturday, September 17, 2022

Shorewood boys varsity tennis team 2022
The Shorewood boys tennis team has high goals for their 2022 season. Led by senior Co-Captains, Murray Falkin and Blake Gettmann, Shorewood started their first week with a challenging matchup versus Jackson High School on September 6, 2022.

The Timberwolves are an annual WesCo 4A power with very talented players. Shorewood Coach Arnie Moreno felt his team needed to be challenged right from the start and the best way to tell how good Shorewood could be was to play Jackson. The team responded to play a very high-level match and defeat Jackson 4-3.

They travelled to Marysville Getchell High School and swept all matches winning 7-0, led by freshman number one singles Xander Gordon.

Lake Stevens Vikings visited Shorewood courts and were defeated by Shorewood 5-2. Number one doubles, Blake Gettmann and Nathan Hagemeier, dominated their match by winning 6-1, 6-0.

Gettmann is a returning WIAA state doubles 7th place medalist. Number 4 singles Henry Franey clinched the victory for Shorewood by winning 7-5, 6-4.

Shorewood travelled to and defeated Stanwood on their courts, 6-1. Shorewood's singles swept their matches with excellent all court play. Winning their matches, in straight sets, for Shorewood were Xander Gordon, JD Drake, co- captain Murray Falkin and Henry Franey.

Shorewood stayed undefeated at the end of their second week to improve their team WesCo record to 4-0.

L-R: Senior Co-Captains Murray Falkin and Blake Gettmann

Shorewood opens their WesCo South conference matches at Mountlake Terrace on Monday September 19th.

They will then host a very strong KingCo 4A North Creek team on Tuesday September 20th. The match with North Creek will feature top players from KingCo and Shorewood's very talented team.

Coach Moreno "knows his team will elevate their level of play to meet this challenge."

Summer Smash tennis is back for its seventh year

Saturday, June 11, 2022

After COVID forced the cancellation of the Snohomish Summer Smash in 2020, a record number of players turned out for the tennis tournament for high school players in 2021, with 130 competitors representing 32 high schools.

This year the action will take place from July 21st through 24th, at the Snohomish High School courts.

Registration costs are $35 for Singles players and $50 for Doubles and Mixed Doubles teams, with proceeds going to the Snohomish High School tennis programs.

Tournament Director Kraig Norris, in conjunction with the Snohomish High School coaches, formed the tournament in 2015 to counter the lack of competitive options for players who aren’t registered with the US Tennis Association.

Reaching out to eight tennis clubs and over forty high schools throughout the region, Norris said the feedback he’s received from coaches and players is one of excitement at this opportunity to compete.

Registration deadline for the tournament is July 13th, and players interested in participating can go to snohomishsummersmash.com for a printable registration form, or to register online.

The second round pitted them against many players from the always tough Metro schools, Lakeside and Seattle Prep or Mercer Island.

The third round featured the very top players advancing and all needed one more win in consolations to have a chance to win a medal.

State Medal winners and coaches. l-r: Girls JV Coach April Thompson, Boys JV Coach Rebecca Moreno, Blake Gettmann, Rylie Gettmann, Ethan Farley, Coach Arnie Moreno.

The top eight placers win WIAA tennis medals. Rylie Gettman in singles and Ethan Farley / Blake Gettmann raised their level of play to win two more matches and play in a consolation final.

Ethan Farley, Blake Gettmann and Riley Gettmann earned 8th place medals to cap their amazing seasons.

Next year's Shorewood tennis teams will return two very strong teams.
  • The boys' team will add very good JV players and will be considered a favorite to win the league.
  • The girls team returns the complete young team that set a record for total individual season wins, winning 87 and losing only 4 and a two-year record of 23-0, undefeated WesCo 3A league and District 1 champions and also a top favorite to repeat as league and District champions.
All of the Shorewood players gave it all they had in every match and hit many incredible shots and displayed why they earned the elite distinction of becoming a state tournament player.

The Shorewood tennis players proved they could give any player or team from Seattle Metro and other state top teams all they could handle. Coach Moreno felt that the Shorewood players gained a lot of respect from other teams and their sportsmanship, win or lose, was always respectful to their opponents.

Shorewood girls tennis qualify four players for state

Friday, May 20, 2022

District 1 champions l to r: Sophia Serwold, Lindsay Rand, Rylie Gettmann, Coach Arnie Moreno, Emma Nelson, Emma Okamura, Emily Lin. Photo by Arnie Moreno

The Shorewood Girls tennis team took six players to the District 1 tennis tournament with high hopes and won the team championship and qualified four players to the state tournament in Richland, Washington May 27th and 28th.

The week before the team finished with a complete sweep in singles and doubles finals: Emily Lin and Rylie Gettmann in singles and Lindsay Rand / Sophia Serwold and Emma Okamura / Emma Nelson in doubles.

The District tournament is a region-wide tournament that includes schools from WesCo North and Northwest Conference (Skagit and Whatcom counties).

The competition was the best the Shorewood team had seen all year with many great players and matches.

They knew they had to raise their level of game and be consistent in order to win. With strong support from their teammates, parents and friends they battled in every match.

By the end of the first day they were in position to advance to state all six players and in the lead for the team championship.

The second day the team not only had tough opponents, they had to deal with gusty wind conditions with gusts up to 25 miles per hour. Shorewood players were determined to stay focused on their goals of qualifying for the state tournament and placing in the top four.

Rylie Gettman, District 1 singles champion
Rylie Gettmann
, freshman, played aggressively and was unfazed by her opponents. She was able to secure a spot in the singles final versus a top-rated player from Edmonds-Woodway. Gettmann won a tense first set tie-breaker 7-6 ( 7- 3 ), then took control with precision shots that placed her opponent on defense throughout the match.

Emily Lin bounced back after her first loss in the semi-final round to take third with a great overall court game and defeat her Arlington opponent.

The doubles teams were on schedule to advance but Emma Nelson and Emma Okamura lost a very tough match versus a surprising Mountlake Terrace team that placed fourth the week before. Nelson and Okamura finished in 6th place.

Coach Arnie Moreno told them that he expected they would be back to the District tournament next year and would not be surprised if they win it. The two sophomores will be one of the top returning doubles teams in league and district next season.

Shorewood's doubles team of Lindsay Rand and Sophia Serwold had played singles for 90 percent of the season. They won the WesCo South league doubles championship the week before and came to the tournament with lots of confidence. They came together to take their shot at making state in doubles. Their great shot-making and strong all court games, along with great on court chemistry and communication, carried them to third place and a spot in the state tournament.

Coach Arnie Moreno is extremely proud of the high level of tennis, sportsmanship, consistency, taking on all challengers and how they had fun playing a great game.

They will now join the elite group of tennis players that will compete at the WIAA State tournament. Shorewood boys, also District 1 Champs, had also qualified in the Fall. Doubles teams, Ethan Farley / Blake Gettmann and Ben Borgida / David Lin, will join the Shorewood girls' team at the state tournament.

This will be one of the largest groups of players to represent Shorewood and Shoreline at the state tournament.

Shorewood girls tennis finishes the season undefeated and as WesCo South League Champions

Friday, May 6, 2022

WesCo South League Champions - Shorewood

Shorewood girls varsity tennis wrapped their season with wins over WesCo 4A Glacier Peak and WesCo 3A North team, Arlington.

They beat Glacier Peak 5-2 and Arlington 7-0.

Shorewood final overall record 13-0 and WesCo South 6-0.

They earned the league championship and finished with a remarkable individual win and loss record, winning 88 matches and losing only 4 all season.

They won eleven matches 7-0 and two matches 5-2.

Coach Arnie Moreno, in his 19th season as varsity coach cannot remember any team in WesCo tennis being this dominant and consistent.

The Shorewood girls’ teams of 2005, 2006, 2007 had a record of 47-1 and Coach Moreno remembers that many of their wins were very close victories.

He feels that this year's team is as good or better than the 2005 team, with two back-to-back undefeated seasons, and has set a record for individual season win totals, that maybe only they can break or match.

The Shorewood team returns next season with the same line up.

l-r Singles players sophomore Emily Lin and freshman Rylie Gettmann were undefeated

Leading the team were the singles players who lost only one match.

Undefeated players were number 1 sophomore Emily Lin, number 2 freshman Rylie Gettmann, number 3 junior Lindsay Rand and number 4 junior Sophia Serwold.

Everett Herald Prep Athlete of the Week April 18 - 24
Emily Lin - Shorewood - Girls Tennis

Lin, a sophomore, went 3-0 in her No. 1 singles matches while helping Shorewood with a trio of wins. Lin didn’t drop a set in her first two victories and closed her week with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Edmonds-Woodway’s Paige Oliver. Lin won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week poll for April 18-24 by claiming 829 (29.9%) of 2,774 votes.

l-r Doubles team sophomore Emma Nelson and Emma Okamura
lost only one match during the season and won 12

The Shorewood doubles teams were also dominant.

  • Number 1 sophomores Emma Nelson and Emma Okamura lost only one match and won 12,
