Monday, April 11, 2022

Singles player Sophia Serwold
The Shorewood Girls tennis team hosted their in-district rivals, the Shorecrest Scots, on Tuesday March 5, 2022 ,and swept all singles and doubles, to win 7-0.

The singles players were led with consistent all court game by number 4 singles Sophia Serwold. Also winning were Emily Lin, Lindsay Rand and Rylie Gettmann.

Shorewood won all three doubles matches over the Scots. Number 1 doubles Emma Nelson and Emma Okamura led the way with strong serving, precise volleying and great team work on the court.

Carryn Petersen and Mari Brittle, Amelia Uran and Reese Johnson won in straight sets to complete the victory for Shorewood.

Shorewood v Kamiak
On Thursday, the Shorewood team faced an annual top three team from Wesco 4A league, at Kamiak High School. The team was up to the challenge and elevated their game to win convincingly 7-0.

Emily Lin encountered a very consistent number 1 and won in two very hard-fought sets. The match included long rallies and aggressive baseline play from both players. Rand, Gettmann and Serwold all won to sweep in singles.

Rand overcame a first set loss to win the next two sets in long points that sometimes lasted over thirty strokes per point!

Shorewood's doubles also stepped up to the challenge with extremely consistent groundstrokes and aggressive volleying at net. Carryn Petersen and Ava Lamb led the way at number 2 to win in straight sets. Also winning were Okamura and Nelson at number 1 and Uran and Johnson at number 3.

The wins improved Shorewood's record to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Wesco South.

They will host Lake Stevens on Tuesday the 12th with matches starting at 3:30pm.

Shorewood Tennis vs Snohomish, Stanwood, and Archbishop Murphy

Shorewood co-captains
Girls varsity tennis
Coach Arnie Moreno

Shorewood 5, Snohomish 2
at Snohomish

The Shorewood girls' tennis team had a win over Marysville Getchell last week, but were facing two strong teams from WESCO North, Snohomish and Stanwood. The team was nervous and excited facing an always tough Snohomish team at Snohomish.

Coach Arnie Moreno reminded his team before the start of the match that the Panthers were just as nervous about facing them on the courts. The Shorewood team stepped up to the challenge. The match started with all singles and doubles in very close sets.

The Panthers started strong by winning first sets in number 1 and 2 singles and number 1 and 2 doubles. Shorewood won first sets in number 3 and 4 singles and number 3 doubles to stay close.

Shorewood responded by winning the second sets at number 1 and 2 singles, sophomore Emily Lin and junior Lindsay Rand, to even up their matches. In singles number 3 freshman Rylie Gettmann and number 4 junior Sophia Serwold won in straight sets.

In doubles, Shorewood's number 3 sophomore Amelia Uran and sophomore Reese Johnson also won in straight sets to help the team to a 3-0 lead over the Panthers. Snohomish came back to win the number 1 and two doubles to make it 3-2 with Shorewood still leading.

It came down to third sets at 1 and 2 singles to decide the match. Lin and Rand elevated their game with tenacity and came through with great shots to control their opponents and win the third sets. Shorewood defeated the Panthers 5-2.

The Shorewood team then travelled to face Stanwood and won 7-0 in very challenging, windy, conditions.

Stanwood is always a good test as they are usually one of the best WESCO North teams each year.

Doubles teams were led by Emma Okamura and Emma Nelson with consistent shot making and serving.

Freshman Rylie Gettmann had a strong win to help the singles sweep the Stanwood singles.

Lindsay Rand

On Thursday March 31st, the team travelled to Archbishop Murphy and also won all matches for a 7-0 win.

Singles players, Lin, Rand, Gettmann and Serwold also won in straight sets to complete the sweep.

Shorewood improved their record to 4-0. They will face in district rival the Shorecrest Scots at home Tuesday April 5th.

Matches start at 3:30pm.

Shorecrest tennis doubles team of Calvin Rice and Owen Pierce qualify for state tournament

Saturday, October 30, 2021

Story and photos by Coach Rob Mann

The saga to determine who will qualify for the 3A State Tennis Tournament continued this week at the District Tournament at Skagit Valley College.

The State Tournament will not be played until the end of May since many high schools in Washington play tennis in the spring. Thus, those who qualified at the WESCO 3A Tournament will have to wait for quite some time before getting to compete again.

Zaid Khan serving

Zaid Khan
(SC) had a great first day beating his first opponent without dropping a game. In the second round, it was quite a battle against Russell Anderson. They had long rallies where they were both ripping balls at each other. At one point, Russell stated that Zaid’s shot was epic. Zaid’s game was on point and he just kept hitting winners.

Day 2 was not so kind. His semi-final match was against Ezra Franklin, whose style of tennis is to chop block every shot back no matter how hard you hit the ball. He has frustrated many opponents with his incredible defensive skills. Sadly, the match ended in defeat for Zaid.

Then, he had to play Will McDonald who had just come off a brutal 3 setter prior to playing Zaid. There was hope that Zaid was going to win this match because he took the first set easily, but then Will found a second wind. He got to the net more often and put his volleys away that allowed Will to win the match.

Zaid’s third and final match of the day was against Cade Strickland. They both had played two matches earlier in the day, so they didn’t have much energy left, but they both fought hard. Both of them utilized the drop shot effectively in the match. There were probably more drop shop winners in this match than all the other matches combined. Sadly, Cade prevailed and Zaid earned 6th place.

Owen at net and Calvin serving

The duo of Calvin Rice and Owen Pierce had a great tournament
. They played singles all season and have been fine-tuning their doubles skills each match. In the first round, they got past Max Andrews and Trevor VanAssche fairly easily, only dropping two games.

In the second round, they had to play Ethan Farley and Blake Gettman who were the eventual District Champions. Calvin/Owen had just a few more unforced errors than Farley/Gettman that cost them the match.

They returned on Day 2 to play 3 more matches. They found their stride and figured out how to play quality doubles. Both of them were serving big and allowing their partner at the net to clean up with volley winners.

They really minimized the unforced errors and they both moved well on the court, which is why they were able to win all three matches on Day 2 and earn 3rd place overall and a berth to the State Tournament.

Connor at service line and Matthew at the baseline

The team of Matthew Gardiner and Connor Wakefield had a tough outing in the first round. They couldn’t quite get their game dialed in and lost in the first round to Connor Wickstrom and Cameron Bailey from Stanwood 3-6, 3-6. Unfortunately, the first round was single elimination, so the loss knocked them out of the tournament.

Zaid Khan (SC)

  • 2nd round Zaid defeated Russell Anderson (Edmonds-Woodway) 6-4, 7-6

Shorewood boys tennis team completes a very successful season by capturing the District 1 Tennis Team Championship

The Shorewood boys tennis team completed a very successful season by capturing the District 1 Tennis Team Championship over WesCo South rivals, Edmonds-Woodway and Shorecrest.

Teams from the WesCo North division and Northwest 3A league also competed in the tournament. They were playing for a spot to the WIAA State tournament. The top four placers would qualify for state.

The T-Birds entered two doubles teams, WesCo South number 1 seeded Ethan Farley / Blake Gettmann and number two seeds Ben Borgida / David Lin. Farley and Gettmann defeated the Borgida / Lin team the week before for the WesCo South doubles championship.

Borgida and Lin won three matches in a row, on Tuesday October 26, 2021 to reach the doubles final. Their biggest win came in the semi-finals where they defeated the WesCo North number 1 seeded Everett team in straight sets. Wednesday October 27th, Farley and Gettmann defeated the Northwest number 1 Mount Vernon team in straight sets, to reach the doubles final.

It was an all Thunderbird final again!

The match started with the Farley / Gettmann team jumping out to a commanding 4-1 lead in the first set. Borgida and Lin did not give up and were able to tie the set at 4-4 with more of an aggressive attack at net.

Borgida serving to Gettmann. Photo by Arnie Moreno

Farley and Gettmann regrouped and were able to hold their serve and break their opponents' serve to win a hard fought first set 6-4. Borgida and Lin knew they had to start strong in the second set. They used their powerful serves to put Farley / Gettmann on their heels. Borgida / Lin jumped out to a 4-1 second set lead. It looked like the match may go to a third set.

Farley and Gettmann refocused themselves and began to chip away at the lead with accurate serving and consistent shot making. Farley and Gettmann clawed their way back to a 4-4 lead and were able to secure a tough 6-4 match win.

The T-Bird teams won the District 1 team championship, qualified for the state tournament and each earned All-WesCo honors.

The WIAA State 3A tennis tournament will be next May at Kamiakin High School in Kennewick, Washington.

Farley and Gettmann accomplished a rare feat by not losing a set in the WesCo South and District 1 tournaments. Coach Arnie Moreno was proud of their high level of play and their outstanding sportsmanship.

Hard fought matches in WESCO South 3A League Tennis Tournament result in 5 Shorecrest players moving on to District Tournament

Sunday, October 24, 2021

Robert Mann, Matthew Gardiner, Connor Wakefield, Owen Pierce, Calvin Rice, Zaid Khan

By Coach Rob Mann

The two day adventure of the WESCO South 3A League Tennis Tournament concluded once there was a break in the weather. The athletes brought their best tennis to the courts and provided a plethora of entertainment for the fans.

Every player represented his school with the utmost dignity and class. The players from all the schools know each other well and were supportive of one another during the tournament. The winners were always humble in victory and losers were always gracious in defeat.

Zaid Khan

Zaid Khan earns 3rd place in the League Tournament

Zaid Khan (SC) got a first round bye. In the second round, he faced Alex Lee (Meadowdale) who won his first round match. Zaid came prepared to play and just dominated Lee, winning the set quickly 6-0, 6-0.

In the semi-final (3rd round) he faced Steven Anderson (Edmonds-Woodway) who was a formidable opponent. These two played one of the most spectacular matches ever seen at the League Tournament. They are both high caliber tennis players and evenly matched. Anderson has a well rounded game and put a lot of pressure on Zaid. He was a technician and would hit quality groundstrokes that allowed him to play inside the baseline for much of the match.

Zaid was a defensive magician forcing Steven to constantly hit one more shot. He had big first serves and he found his spots to rip his forehands as well. They split the first two sets and Zaid went up a break in the third set and it looked like he was in control, but Steven had other plans and was able to break Zaid twice in the set to win the match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. It was a tough loss for Zaid, but he played exceptionally well and was able to take that momentum into the consolation bracket.

In his next match, he got to play JD Drake (Shorewood). The winner of this match qualifies for the District Tournament and the loser gets to play another match for the alternate spot. Zaid had beaten JD twice during the tournament, but he made sure not to underestimate him. Zaid just stayed consistent throughout the match by keeping the ball in play and forcing JD to make errors. Also, anytime JD came to the net, Zaid would hit vicious dippers that JD struggled to get back over the net. Zaid was able to win this match 6-0, 6-1.

With the win, Zaid qualified for the District Tournament and now it was only a matter of seeding for his final match. He played Yuli Berisha (Meadowdale) who is a talented player with great skills from the baseline. Zaid dialed up his game another notch and Berisha couldn’t find any answers. Even when Berisha was ripping forehands to open court that seemed like they were going to be winners, Zaid found a way to get to those balls and hit running forehands that put Berisha back on defense. Zaid was dominant in the match and won 6-1, 6-1 to earn the 3rd place in the League Tournament. Each match Zaid improves and he will be a tough opponent for whoever has to face him in the District Tournament next week.

Indigo Vining

Indigo Vining (SC) won his first match in singles against lefty Andy Ho (Lynnwood) by keeping the ball deep and to his backhand. Indigo dominated the first set winning 6-0, but Ho was not going to give up and fought hard in the second set by rocketing flat forehands to Indigo’s feet. Luckily, Indigo was able to hold on and win the second set 7-5.

The win propelled him into the second round to play Russell Anderson (Edmonds-Woodway) who is a lefty as well. Russell went undefeated during league play and earned the #1 seed. He has a strong baseline game and his forehand is a weapon that constantly puts Indigo on defense. Indigo lost 1-6, 0-6 to the eventual champion of the League Tournament.

The loss put him into the consolation bracket, but he still had a chance to go to the District Tournament. He had to face JD Drake (Shorewood) who is a player from another era, with his serve and volley tactics. Not many players play that style of tennis anymore in singles, but JD does it with perfection. The match was closer than the score reflected and I am sure that these two freshmen will be battling out for the next three years. Indigo lost 1-6, 0-6 to get knocked out of the tournament.

Owen Pierce and Calvin Rice

Calvin Rice and Owen Pierce - place 3rd in doubles

The duo of Calvin Rice and Owen Pierce (SC) who played singles all year paired up to play doubles in the postseason had a first round bye. In the second round, they faced David Lin and Ben Borgida (Shorewood) who really should have been seeded higher in the tournament. This was a tough match for Shorecrest because Shorewood had momentum on their side after winning the first round match and Calvin and Owen had yet to play a match. Beyond that, both Lin and Borgida had big serves that made it nearly impossible to break them. Thus, the best chance for Calvin and Owen to win was to hold all of their service games, which they didn’t. Shorecrest lost 2-6, 4-6 to a tough crosstown rival who eventually earned 2nd place in the tournament.

The defeat fueled their desire to do better in the future matches in the tournament. In the consolation bracket, they competed against Jeremy Perreault and Christian Gill-More (Mountlake Terrace) and came out strong and earned a lopsided victory by minimizing their unforced errors. Calvin and Owen won 6-1, 6-0.

They had to win their next match against Sam Browne and Jude Wilcox (Edmonds-Woodway) to qualify for the District Tournament. They started strong in the first set and a half hitting in all aspects of tennis and had a big lead in the second set. It slipped away with some unlucky bounces and unforced errors, which allowed Edmonds-Woodway back into the match. Owen and Calvin finally decided in the second set tiebreaker to take charge and dominate on the court, winning 6-3, 7-6 (3).

They had to wait until day two to determine who they would play in their final match to figure out who would be the third and fourth seed for the District Tournament.

Connor Wakefield, Matthew Gardiner

Matthew Gardiner and Connor Wakefield - place 4th in doubles

Matthew Gardiner and Connor Wakefield (SC) dominated the first round against Jake Britton and Kallen Kinney (Meadowdale) by taking the net early and putting volleys away. Shorecrest won 6-1, 6-0.

In the second round, they had to face the toughest doubles team in the tournament of Blake Gettman and Ethan Farley (Shorewood). The Shorewood team have been playing doubles #1 together for the last half of the season and they really are a cohesive unit out on the court. Their match experience together has really helped them to develop solid doubles tactics that made it difficult for Matthew and Connor.

Matthew Gardiner

Shorecrest played tough through the whole match and only a couple volley and service errors are what cost them the match against Shorewood. Matthew and Connor lost 3-6, 4-6.

In the consolation bracket, they faced Aden Le and Kai Magbuhat (Mountlake Terrace) who played #1 singles and #2 singles all season. Connor and Matthew elevated their game and took the match with ease winning 6-1, 6-0.

In the next match the faced the #1 seeded team of Grant Oliver and Drew Warner (Edmonds Woodway) This was the first match on Day 2 and Shorecrest had a rough start for the first half of the set, but they finished the first set strong with put away volleys and overheads.

In the second set, Edmonds Woodway started poaching more and they were rewarded for it by hitting winning volleys off the Shorecrest return. The teams split sets and had to play a 3rd and final set to determine who would earn a spot to the District Tournament. Shorecrest decided now was the time to take control of the match.

Matthew Gardiner

Matthew was playing large at the net and terminating points with excellent volleys and overheads. Connor was the lob master. He tracked down just about every lob and sent lobs back that would constantly fall just inside the baseline causing Edmonds Woodway to miss the next shot. After a long see-saw battle, Shorecrest prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and earned a spot to the District Tournament.

Their day was not done because they still had to play the 3rd/4th place match to determine seeding. Their opponents were the other Shorecrest team of Calvin Rice and Owen Pierce. They were all glad to be playing in a non-elimination match. Calvin and Owen dominated the first set with big serves and monster groundstrokes. Matthew and Owen fought back in the second set with solid net play. After they split sets, they played a 3rd and final set to determine the match and Calvin and Owen were able to win by just being more consistent than Matthew and Connor. Calvin and Owen won 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to earn 3rd place and Matthew and Connor earned fourth place in the league tournament.

Shorecrest Team qualifies 5 players to the District Tournament

The Shorecrest Tennis Team had a strong showing at the League Tournament by qualifying 5 players to the District Tournament that will take place October 26th and October 27th starting at 11am if weather permits. They will play in a double elimination tournament that is made up of WESCO North, WESCO South, and Northwest. T-Bird doubles teams ( l to r ) Ethan Farley, Blake Gettmann, Ben Borgida, David Lin

By Coach Arnie Moreno

The Shorewood Thunderbirds dominated the WesCo South doubles tennis tournament.

It was an all T-bird final for the doubles championships, with two Shorewood teams playing for the doubles crown.

T-Bird doubles Champions Farley and Gettmann

T-Birds Ethan Farley and Blake Gettmann clashed with their teammates David Lin and Ben Borgida.

Borgida and Lin were seeded 6th and had to defeat a very good team from Meadowdale in their first match, then beat the number 1 seeded Edmonds-Woodway team to get into the doubles final.

The all Thunderbird doubles finals match started with Farley and Gettmann jumping out to a lead with aggressive shot making to win the first set 6-2.

In the second set, Borgida and Lin’s serves came alive. Both Borgida and Lin win with accurate and powerful serves.

They jumped out to a 4-3 lead but Farley and Gettmann did not give up. They broke their opponents serve then held to take a 5-4 lead. They held on to win the championship 6-4.

T-Bird Freshman JD Drake improved in every match, to win 3 matches and place 5th and to be the alternate in singles to District 1.

The Shorewood doubles teams will advance to the District 1 final next week, October 26 and 27, 2021 at Jackson High School or, in case of bad weather, Skagit Valley College courts in Mount Vernon.

The Shorewood boys tennis team completed the final week of their tennis season with three straight wins. They started the week with Jackson High School, one of the toughest Wesco 4A tennis teams. The T-Birds won with a convincing 5-2 score. Junior Murray Falkin, senior co-captain David Lin and junior Nathan Hagemeier led the victory by winning three of four singles matches.

The Thunderbirds defeated conference opponent Meadowdale, 6-1 on Tuesday with consistent shots and strong net game.

Shorewood hosted another powerhouse team from Wesco 4A, Glacier Peak high school, and won 6-1. Victories at number 1 singles and doubles secured the win. Freshman JD Drake was tenacious and determined in his match. He was able to hit crucial winning shots under intense pressure from a very good Glacier Peak opponent.

The number 1 doubles team of Farley and Gettmann continued to battle some of the best teams in the league. They raised their level of play in the third set with aggressive shot making and won their match 6-1.

The T-Birds finished their season with a 6-2 Wesco South record and 12-2 overall record to be one of the top teams in Wesco.

Shorewood singles players Drake and Falkin, doubles teams Farley / Gettmann and Borgida / Lin, will all play in the Wesco South Division tournament October 19th and 20th at Arlington high school.

Tournament matches start at 1pm. The top four placers move on to play in the District 1 tournament for a chance to secure one of four spots for the WIAA 3A State Tournament.

Shorecrest finishes the regular season with a dominant win over Cascade on Senior Night. All the singles quickly took control of their matches where they only dropped a total of two games in the combined 8 sets that they played.

Zaid Khan continues to rip deadly forehands that look like something one would see in the ATP tour.

Calvin Rice’s consistency on the court earned him a quick victory. Owen Pierce generated heavy topspin that kept his opponent pushed back deep on the court. Even Connor Wakefield, who is a doubles specialist, won his second singles match 6-0, 6-1. He is one of the few players that will be able to say that he never lost a singles match for Shorecrest.

#1 Doubles for Shorecrest was a new pairing of Indigo Vining and Sohum Vohra and had to face a tough team who usually play #1 Singles and #2 Singles for Cascade. Sohum and Indigo took a while to transition to a doubles mind set and the first set ended quickly in the favor of Cascade. Shorecrest came out much stronger in the second set and employed the game plan more often, which made the second set much closer, but it wasn’t enough this time.

Thomas Linville and Spencer Berry played #2 Doubles for Shorecrest and they came out strong in the first set by minimizing their unforced errors and capitalizing on their opponents' mistakes which led to a lopsided victory in the first set. Cascade fought harder in the second set and almost took the set to a tiebreaker, but Shorecrest was able to prevail in the end 7-5. Ronin Crawford and Parker Mina played #3 Doubles and just played sound tennis at the net and was able to get a quick victory of 6-0, 6-0.

The season was a roller coaster for Shorecrest starting the season 1-4, then getting a victory over the Shorewood tennis team 4-3 who were undefeated at the time. Then, we had a tough loss to Meadowdale 3-4 in league play but finished the last three matches of the season with victories. Shorecrest finished the regular season 7-6 overall and 4-2 in league play, which earned the team 2nd place in league play behind Edmonds-Woodway who went undefeated in league matches.

Two doubles teams and two singles players from each WESCO 3A South school will be moving on to the League Tournament that will take place October 19th and October 20th at Jackson High School at 11:00am.

The top 4 singles and top 4 doubles will qualify for the District Tournament that will take place October 26th and October 27th at Jackson High School. This is a modified 12 man double elimination tournament consisting of 4 berths from WESCO 3A South, 6 berths from WESCO North, and 2 berths from NWC. Most likely, the top 4 from the District Tournament will compete at the State Tournament in Kennewick in the spring.

Northwest Conference: Oak Harbor, Ferndale, and Mt Vernon

WESCO North: Arlington, Cascade, Everett, Stanwood, Monroe, Marysville- Getchell, Marysville Pilchuck, Snohomish

Zaid Khan

Story and photos by Rob Mann, SC Coach

The Shorecrest team came out ready to play despite the threat of rain the entire time. Zaid Khan’s forehands reached another level today with increased power and precision. Despite his crazy forehands, he faced a formidable opponent with great defense. Somehow, Zaid found himself down 1-5 in the 2nd set, but he was determined to not drop the second set and miraculously climbed his way out of deep hole to take the set 7-5.

Matthew Gardiner

Matthew Gardiner
started the first set really tight and dropped the first set in a close tiebreaker. He remembered to just relax and accelerate his racquet, which led to a lopsided victory in the second set with score of 6-0. With the radar showing that the courts will be covered in rain in the near future, the coaches agreed to play a ten-point tiebreaker in lieu of a 3rd set. The tiebreaker was close, with Matthew prevailing 12-10.

Indigo Vining

Indigo Vining
split sets with his opponent today, dropping the first set, then winning the second yet. He won his second set, by striking the ball more cleanly and using heavy topspin to keep the ball on the court. He carried that momentum into the super-tiebreaker taking an early 6-0 lead. His opponent fought his way back, but in the end Indigo was able to secure the victory with a score of 10-6.

Connor Wakefield

Connor Wakefield,
who is really a doubles specialist, played singles for the first time for Shorecrest and he crushed it. He dominated by hitting the ball deep on the court and getting to the net early.  His opponent left him many short lobs that he was able to put away.  He was the first to finish winning 6-2, 6-1.

Calvin Rice and Owen Pierce

The dynamic duo of Calvin Rice and Owen Pierce, who usually play singles, played doubles today to get ready for the postseason. It was a close match, but in the end they won with great serving, touch volleys, and punch volleys to the open court.

Sohum Vohra and Spencer Berry

Sohum Vohra
and Spencer Berry had a dominant performance on Court 2 soundly beating their opponents by keeping the ball in play.

Parker Mina and Ronin Crawford had a lengthy match, but prevailed with hitting solid cross court returns and taking the net early as a team so that they could finish points with solid volleys.formidable

Shorewood boys tennis team have a successful week

Saturday, October 9, 2021

The Shorewood boys tennis team had a successful week. The T-Birds started with the week with a 7-0 win over Mountlake Terrace on Monday October 4, 2021 led by the Borgida brothers, Ben and Sam, at number two doubles.

They traveled to Lynnwood on Wednesday and swept all matches winning 7-0. Senior T-Bird captain, Ethan Farley, switched to singles and won 6-0, 6-0 and Julian Walston and Blake Gettmann also blanked their Royals opponents 6-0, 6-0.

The Thunderbirds lost, 1-6, in a tough rematch with Edmonds-Woodway Warriors at their home courts. The Warriors played outstanding tennis. The T-Birds won the first match versus Edmonds-Woodway 4-3 at Shorewood courts.

Shorewood rebounded with a rematch win over the Shorecrest Scots, at Shorewood Courts, winning 5-2. The T-Birds won three of four singles matches and two of three doubles matches.

Singles players winning were Murray Falkin at #2, senior captain David Lin and senior Ben Borgida. T-Birds, Connor Vana and Henry Sheffield, Ethan Farley and Blake Gettmann, secured the team win by winning their matches.

The match of the game was the win by number one doubles by Farley and Gettmann with a come from behind victory.

Farley and Gettmann had a huge challenge ahead of them after losing the first set 2-6 to their very tough Scot challengers. They played determined and aggressive tennis to change the momentum in the second set to win 6-0. The deciding third set is always a challenge to see which team can stay focused under intense pressure. Farley and Gettmann did not let their momentum change, continuing their pressure on the Scots with great volleys and groundstrokes. The T-Birds won the doubles match to seal the team victory.

Coach Moreno was proud of the way the team rebounded from a loss at Edmonds-Woodway on Thursday to defeat rival Shorecrest.

The Thunderbirds record improved to 5-1 in league and 9-2 overall. They will travel to powerhouse Wesco 4A Jackson on Monday, host conference opponent Meadowdale on Tuesday October 12, then finish the season with another tough opponent from Wesco 4A Glacier Peak. All matches start at 3:30pm.
