Everyone on the team played solid tennis to help secure the 7-0 victory over Lynnwood on Tuesday night.

Zaid Khan (S1) defeated his opponent by playing consistent tennis and utilizing the drop shot and lob combination. Calvin Rice (S2) stepped up his game today by hitting blistering forehands and minimizing his unforced errors. Owen Pierce (S3) won by keeping the ball deep and getting to the net to finish points. Matthew Gardiner (S4) had rough a start, but he remembered the mantra that it isn’t about how you start, but how you finish and he finished strong to take the victory.

Shorecrest tennis hands Shorewood their first loss of the season

Shorecrest vs Shorewood Varsity Boys Tennis
WESCO 2A/3A/4A
Date: 9/22/21 Location: Kellogg MS
Score: SC:   4     SW:  3     SC Overall Record: 2-4

By Rob Mann, SC Coach

Shorewood has been dominant all season, going undefeated until today when Shorecrest stepped up and handed the Thunderbirds their first loss of the season.

It was an impressive victory considering that the Scots were sitting at a record of 1-4 prior to this rival match. Shorewood doubles teams are exceptional this season with their solid net play and excellent tactics.

The Thunderbird doubles teams are still undefeated after the match today only yielding a total of two games on all three courts. Thus, the Scots needed all four of their singles players to step up their game for this league match and all four of them did.

Zaid Khan (SC) exercised patience by keeping the ball down the middle, then blasted multiple passing shots past JD Drake (SW) when he came to the net to volley. The score was lopsided 6-0, 6-0, but JD played tough and fought hard throughout the match.

Calvin Rice (SC) was able to dictate most of the points by keeping the ball on his forehand side and hitting the ball to the backhand of Murray Falkin (SW). The first set Calvin had an easy time and he thought the second set was going to be easy as well. Murray had other plans and picked up his game in the second set, but it wasn’t quite enough today. Calvin was able to win on court 2 6-2, 6-4.

On court 3, the two players were relying on their mental fortitude to win the match. David Lin (SW) got the early break in the first set, but Owen Pierce (SC) was able to break back later in the set a couple of times to win the first set.

Both players were ripping forehands and trying their best to keep the other player deep on the court. Owen minimized his unforced errors this match and looked to get to the net as often as he could to terminate the point. Owen had multiple match points in the second set, but David wasn’t going to go down easily. After multiple match points, Owen finally prevailed 6-4, 6-3.

At this moment the team score is 3-3. Shorecrest has won all the singles and Shorewood has won all the doubles. The deciding match was fourth singles between Matthew Gardiner (SC) and Tate Nelson (SW).

Matthew had won the first set fairly easily and was up 5-2 in the second set. All eyes from both teams were on this deciding match. Tate went on a four game win streak to bring the score to 5-6 by crushing his first serves and hitting consistent baseline shots.

Thankfully, Matthew was able to stop the streak by winning the next game to bring the set score to 6-6. The two entered into a tiebreaker where Matthew just played more consistently and was able to win the tiebreaker 7-3 and secure the Shorecrest team victory with a score of 6-3, 7-6(3).

The overall team score was 4-3 and the Shorecrest record is 2-4.

Shorewood tennis hard-fought victory over Edmonds-Woodway 9/13 moves them into first place in WesCo South

Tuesday, September 14, 2021

Senior Captain David Lin "T-Bird Flying !"
Two talented tennis teams, Edmonds-Woodway and Shorewood, battled it out for an early season matchup at Shorewood Courts on Monday, September 13, 2021.

The match pitted two undefeated teams that had early major wins.

The Warriors had a rare victory over WesCo 4A powerhouse Jackson, defeating them 4-3.

Shorewood tangled with KingCo 4A contender North Creek and won a razor thin match 4-3.

The tennis was high level and extremely competitive for every match.

The Warriors dominated in singles but the T-Birds swept in doubles. It came down to number three singles, senior captain David Lin, to be the deciding match. Lin won a tough first set then his opponent met the challenge to tie the match at one set each to set up the final deciding set.

Lin had to regroup and jumped out to a 4-1 lead. His Warrior opponent did not give up and came back to make it a 4-4 match.

Lin responded by holding his serve and then winning long rallies to win 6-4. Both players gave it their best during this long two hour match.
The T-Birds clinched the match and won 4-3. The win moved them into first place in WesCo South and improved the Shorewood record to 4-0.

Coach Moreno knew his team was talented enough to be in every match, including against powerhouse Edmonds-Woodway.

Shorewood Tennis 9/9 and 9/10/21

Sunday, September 12, 2021

The Shorewood Tennis team finished its first week of tennis matches with a 3-0 record. The T-Birds started the week by defeating Snohomish 5-2, at home, then had back to back wins over Cascade 7-0 and North Creek 4-3.

On Friday, at North Creek Jaguars home courts, they faced one of the top teams in KingCo 4A. The match featured a high level of tennis from both teams with each match being very competitive. At number 2 singles, junior Murray Falkin played aggressively and won many crucial points to defeat his opponent.

The doubles teams of senior Captain Ethan Farley / Blake Gettmann, Julian Watson / Jack Buma and Connor Vana / Henry Sheffield, all won to sweep the Jaguars.

It came down to the last doubles match, Shorewood's Vana and Sheffield, that had many momentum changes and amazing shots. Their North Creek opponents were able to make some great shots to come from behind to tie the score at 4-4 in the third and deciding set and were not giving up.

The T-Birds bounced back to hold their serve and give themselves a chance to close out the match. Sheffield made aggressive volleys at net and Vana hit the winning last shot, a blistering forehand down their opponents' alley, to clinch victory for the Thunderbirds.

Coach Moreno is extremely proud of the way the Thunderbirds raised their level of play and handled the pressure of a very close match with a tough opponent. Shorewood hosts the highly regarded Edmonds-Woodway Warriors on Monday September 13, 2021 at 3:30pm.

Shorewood boys tennis returns to action

Wednesday, September 1, 2021

The Shorewood Boys tennis team returns to action on the courts with their first home match on September 7, 2021 versus Snohomish. The Snohomish Panthers are a top North WESCO 3A team every year.

Coach Arnie Moreno says "This T-Bird tennis team will be a great combination of senior experience and talented new players with lots of balance in singles and doubles strength."

This year's team is led by senior captains Ethan Farley, David Lin and Tate Nelson. Farley was undefeated in doubles last year and should be one of the top doubles players in the league, Lin and Nelson are talented veteran singles players that add strength to the singles line up.

The doubles line up returns many strong players which including seniors Connor Vana, Henry Sheffield, Ben Borgida, Joon Lee, Peter Cox and Aiden Boyd.

The team travels to WESCO North 3A Cascade on Thursday and then faces a very strong KingCo 4A North Creek High School team in Bothell. Coach Moreno expects the Shorewood Thunderbirds to be very competitive and challenge for the WESCO South and District 1 championships.

All matches start at 3:30pm.

Sidelined by pandemic, Summer Smash tennis is coming back

Saturday, June 5, 2021

After COVID forced the cancellation of the Snohomish Summer Smash in 2020, the tennis tournament for high school players is returning for its sixth year from July 22 through 25, 2021 at the Snohomish High School courts.

Registration costs are $30 for Singles players and $50 for Doubles and Mixed Doubles teams, with proceeds going to the Snohomish High School tennis programs.

Tournament Director Kraig Norris, in conjunction with the Snohomish High School coaches, formed the tournament in 2015 to counter the lack of competitive options for players who aren’t registered with the US Tennis Association.

Reaching out to six tennis clubs and over forty high schools throughout the region, Norris said the feedback he’s received from coaches and players is one of excitement at this opportunity to compete.

“We lost an entire year of organized tennis,” Norris said, “the girls’ high school season was wiped out in 2020, and for two years players have been denied the chance to compete at State. We hope to provide them some exciting tennis in a fun environment.”

Registration deadline for the tournament is July 16th, and players interested in participating can go to snohomishsummersmash.com for a printable registration form, or to register online.

WESCO South Champions: Shorewood girls varsity tennis team finish the 2021 season undefeated with a 10-0 record

Sunday, May 9, 2021

Senior Captain Brynn Morrison
The Shorewood tennis team faced three of their toughest opponents going into their final week of the tennis season.

The teams from Meadowdale and Edmonds-Woodway have been tough and competitive matches throughout the years.

The T-Birds played outstanding tennis and defeated the Mavericks 6-1, on Tuesday May 4, 2020 at Meadowdale.

On Cinco de Mayo, the Thunderbirds knew that they would have to meet a very strong team fro Edmonds-Woodway.

The match, as always, was extremely close with great shot making on both sides.

Senior Kaylin Yang and sophomore Sophia Serwold

Led by the Shorewood sweep in doubles, number one freshman Emma Nelson / freshman Emma Okamura, number two junior captain Hannah Alexander / junior Sofie Galley and number three senior Kaylin Yang / sophomore Sophia Serwold, the T-Birds tied the match score at 3-3.

Sophomore Lindsay Rand
T-Bird Lindsay Rand was up to the challenge. In the deciding match Rand stayed consistent and won many long rallies to defeat her Warrior opponent and seal the victory for Shorewood. The T-Birds defeated the Warriors 4-3.

In their last home match, the Shorewood Thunderbirds came into the match with a 9-0 record. They would face a very tough 4A team in the Lake Stevens Vikings.

The Vikings were also undefeated and had a senior loaded team, 15 seniors, and lots of experience. Coach Jeff Leer of the Vikings said his team had been looking forward to playing the T-Birds all season.

In the Edmonds-Woodway match the Thunderbird doubles teams led the way to a victory by sweeping the doubles.

In the Lake Stevens matchup, the singles stepped up to sweep the singles. Emily Lin, Brynn Morrison, Lindsay Rand and Carryn Petersen all won their singles matches.

Freshman Emma Okamura
It was needed because the Vikings were extremely tough in doubles. They swept the doubles.

The closest and most interesting match was at number one doubles. In a rare matchup, the undefeated T-Bird freshman team, Okamura and Nelson, played the top two senior singles players for the Vikings that were dropped into doubles. It became a freshman versus senior challenge match.

Okamura and Nelson were up to the challenge by winning the first hard fought set 7-5. The Lake Stevens seniors came back to win the second set 6-2. The T-Bird team won many of their matches with not only consistent shots, but also with great energy and communication. Okamura and Nelson fought hard for every point, but the Viking team's senior experience prevailed to win the third set 6-2.

Freshman Emily Lin

The Thunderbird singles team saved the day and the win 4-3 over Lake Stevens. Lindsay Rand again sealed the victory with a come from behind three set and three-hour match. Rand was down 2-5 in the deciding third set.

Freshman Emma Nelson
T-Bird Coach Arnie Moreno knew that Rand would never give up, even when she was behind in the score. She rallied herself and with determination she fought her way to a 6-6 tie.

This set up a deciding tie-breaker, first player to seven points wins the match. Rand found a way to scratch out a 7-5 victory!

She ended the season as the only player on the Thunderbird team to finish her individual season undefeated at 10-0!

The Shorewood Thunderbirds ended their season undefeated, at 10-0, and could claim to be this year's WESCO South Champions.

Congratulations T-Birds !
