Shorewood girls tennis team start the season with 30 players

Monday, April 5, 2021

The Shorewood Girls tennis team started their Spring season March 30, 2021 with 30 players.

The team will be led this season by co-captains, junior Hannah Alexander and senior Bryn Morrison

The team returns varsity players with lots of experience with Alexander and Morrison plus junior Sophie Galley, sophomore Carryn Petersen and senior Joan Filipi.

A new group of talented players have moved up from last year's junior varsity team and joined by three outstanding freshman Emily Lin, Emma Okamura and Emma Nelson.

After a week of practices and challenges, freshman Emily Lin has captured the number one singles spot.
Okamura and Nelson have made a serious challenge for one of the top three doubles positions. Alexander and Galley look strong at number one doubles, with their consistent play.

The coaches, Arnie Moreno and JV coach April Thompson, are excited to see the new players and the great level of play.

The players and coaches are all happy to be out playing and competing again. The team starts at Mariner, Wednesday, April 7, 2021. The matches are scheduled to start at 3:30pm. The T-Bird JV team will host the Lynnwood JV team.

Go T-Birds.

Tennis: Shorewood team wins 2019-20 WesCo South league championship

Shorewood tennis at District Tournament

At the WesCo South league championship tournament, held at Arlington High School October 29-30, 2019, the Shorewood tennis team was represented by Steven Lin and doubles team, Derick Han and Nico Christianson. Lin lost his first round match versus an opponent from Arlington that had many long rallys.

Steven Lin placed third at District Tournament
and qualified for the State tournament

He came back and won his next match against an Oak Harbor opponent to set up a match that would earn the winner a spot at the WIAA state tournament. Lin's next opponent was a Squalicum player who had placed 7th at state the year before. Knowing that he had a great opponent and huge challenge, Lin played his best match of the season, according to his Coach Arnie Moreno.

He remained focused and under control the whole match and won 6-3, 6-0. The T-Bird team senior co-captain then won his match for third place 6-3, 6-3 over his Snohomish opponent. Lin will compete at the state tournament next May, at the Tri-City Court Club in Kennewick, as the District 1 number 3 seed.

Placing 6th were Nico Christianson and Derick Han, who started the tournament with an upset victory in the first round over WesCo North doubles champs from Oak Harbor. The T-Birds doubles team, Christianson and Han, played great tennis and had an outstanding season.

All three players helped Shorewood win this seasons 2019-20 Wesco South league championship. Congratulations T-Birds on their outstanding play and great sportsmanship!

Correction: The original photo caption said that all three players would go to state. Only singles player Steven Lin qualified.

Tennis District Champions: Ben Silber and Zaid Khan, Shorecrest

Friday, November 1, 2019

Coach Rob Mann, Ben Silber, Zaid Khan,
Assistant Coach Cameron McDowell

Correction: The duo have been nominated for Player of the Week. The award has not been decided.

District Champions: Ben Silber and Zaid Khan, Shorecrest

Ben Silber and Zaid Khan had another stellar outing at the WesCo 3A District Tournament at Arlington High School on October 29th and October 30th.

Zaid Khan and Ben Silber at District tournament

In their first match they faced Ben Nichols and Keaton McBride from Arlington, who both had really big serves.

The Shorecrest duo had trouble breaking Arlington the first few games, but they eventually found a way with consistent returns and groundstrokes.

Arlington kept finding a way to hang on, but the Shorecrest duo finally pulled away, winning the match 6-2, 6-3.

Zaid Khan

In the semi-finals Ben and Zaid faced Aaron Robertson and Grant Mueller from Everett.

The Everett players did a great job taking the net and using their quick reflexes and soft hands to win many points.

However, it wasn’t enough and Shorecrest was able to prevail in first set 6-4.

Ben and Zaid made some adjustments for the second set and dominated Everett 6-0.

In the finals, the Shorecrest duo faced Shintaro Wilcox and Preston Pierce from Stanwood. The players from Stanwood were the most athletic and scrappy players that Shorecrest has faced this year.

The Stanwood players were aggressive net players who put balls away at the net and tracked down ball after ball that looked like winning shots for Shorecrest.

The nerves got to the Shorecrest players in the beginning of the set and they found themselves quickly down 1-5, but luckily they found their rhythm in the next game and broke Stanwood’s serve to bring the set score to 2-5. Both Ben and Zaid relaxed and kept the streak going to win six games in a row to take the first set 7-5.

Ben Silber at District tournament

Shorecrest carried that momentum into the second set dominating their opponents 6-1 with passing shots and put away volleys.

The Shorecrest duo qualified for the State Tournament at Kamiakin High School, but will have a long wait since the tournament doesn’t start until May 22nd.

Updated story with better photos. Corrected reference to player of the week - it was a nomination.

Tennis: Shorecrest wins Sub-District Doubles title

Thursday, October 24, 2019

Ben Silber, Coach Rob Mann, Zaid Khan

Ben Silber and Zaid Khan played some incredible tennis over the past two days to clinch 1st place in doubles at the WesCo South Tournament at Jackson High School on October 22nd and 23rd.

This is the third year in a row that Ben has qualified for districts and he hopes to make it a third year in a row to State. This is the first year for Zaid to play doubles, but he has adapted well. They have developed a strong bond and are a highly effective doubles team despite the limited amount of playing time together.

Silber/Khan played their first match against Lynnwood which had no answer for the powerful groundstrokes and put away volleys that kept coming their way. They only dropped one game in the first match.

Shorecrest continued their dominance in the first set of the second match against Meadowdale, winning it easily 6-0. Meadowdale battled hard in the second set and took the early lead. In fact, Shorecrest was down 3-4, 0-4 with Meadowdale serving. Ben and Zaid were determined not to lose this game and made spectacular shot after spectacular shot to win the next 5 points in a row to even the set at 4-4. Shorecrest carried that seismic momentum shift to win the next two games and secure a spot in the finals.

In the finals, Silber/Khan played against a strong Edmonds-Woodway team. The first set was extremely close the entire way, but SC found a way to win 6-4 with quality serving and solid net play.

The 2nd set, Silber/Khan made some tactical adjustments and played out of their minds to dominate Edmonds-Woodway 6-0, which earned them the title of WesCo South District Champions. They will advance to the WesCo District Tournament on Tuesday October 29th and Wednesday October 30th at Arlington High School at 1pm.

The rest of the Shorecrest players played well, but just had some incredibly challenging matchups. Calvin Rice did secure a win against Trevor Bushnell from Ferndale, but lost to the #1 seed in the next round, who has a combination of powerful groundstrokes and soft touch.

Calvin did play a marathon match in his last match, with some rallies going 65 shots in a row. Many of his games went to deuce, but his opponent from Meadowdale just found a way to win more of the critical points.
