On October 6, 2022, Lake Forest Park Municipal Court Judge Jennifer Grant welcomed the 2022-2023 Youth Court leadership team.

Shorecrest High School (SHS) students are prepared by SHS staff advisor Bo Jordan to serve as the judge and jury.

Following the presentation of evidence, Youth Court members deliberate to fashion a constructive sanction. For instance, they may order the Youth Court participant to perform community service hours, write an essay or letter of apology, or attend Defensive Driving School.

A participant who successfully completes the Youth Court conditions and maintains a clean driving record for a six-month period will be rewarded with a dismissal of their infraction.

Youth Court is a voluntary program available to most 16- or 17-year-old drivers cited with a traffic infraction in Shoreline or Lake Forest Park.

Lake Forest Park Municipal Court is proud to partner with Shoreline District Court and Shorecrest High School to offer this program.

For more information about Youth Court, eligibility requirements, or to make a referral, please visit the Youth Court page on the City’s website.

The 2022 Student Mock Election is now open for all Washington K-12 students

Monday, October 10, 2022

Middle school students who participated in a mock election
OLYMPIA — The Office of the Secretary of State is calling on students and teachers across Washington to participate in the 2022 Student Mock Election.

From now until the November 8, 2022 General Election, the Student Mock Election is a nonpartisan educational initiative that teaches K-12 students how elections work and how to become informed voters.

Students have the opportunity to vote on actual races and measures pertinent to their daily lives, or an alternate version with fictional issues.

Ballots, vote tabulation sheets, and Voters’ Pamphlets are available for download and printing. Other free resources include “I Voted” stickers (which must be ordered by Nov. 8) and the curriculum book Teaching Elections in Washington State

The lessons meet state and Common Core standards, and satisfy the civics coursework required for graduation. Classroom-based assessments are included with each lesson.

“The Student Mock Election is an interactive, educational program that helps students learn more about our elections and enables them to become more informed and involved citizens,” said Assistant Secretary of State Trova O’Heffernan.
“Teachers have access to several unique resources and tools to help teach young people how to make civic engagement a lifelong habit.”

In Washington state, 16- and 17-year-olds can sign up as Future Voters and be automatically registered to vote when they become eligible. More information about the Future Voter program, including qualifications and how to register, is available here.

National Voter Education Week (NVEW) is a nonpartisan voter education campaign held the first week of October that equips voters with the tools, information, and confidence they need to cast their ballots.

Shoreline's strong, welcoming, free programs for youth have openings for paid, part-time adult staff

Tuesday, September 13, 2022

The City of Shoreline Youth and Teen Development programs are free to Middle and High School students in Shoreline.

The programs run throughout the school year, including the Hang Time Programs at both Middle schools, our Shoreline Teen Center in the Richmond Highlands neighborhood east of Aurora, and a variety of classes and events.

These programs are welcoming, safe spaces with free healthy food and amazing resources like our onsite Mental Health Therapist and our Youth Outreach employment program – both of which are funded by a King County Best Starts for kids grant.

As another example, we are also hosting the “After the Game Party” event after the Shorewood/Shorecrest football game at Spartan Recreation Center to provide a fun safe atmosphere for High School students to choose after that game.

The City of Shoreline’s Youth and Teen Development Programs have been a beacon for Teens in the area for more than 25 years and we are one of the few organizations still offering completely free Teen Programs with no barriers to participation in the Shoreline area.

Our Shoreline Teen Center is open Monday- Friday afterschool and Friday and Saturday late night and requires no registration or prior sign-up. Any middle school or high school student is welcome to drop-in for food, games, crafts, sports, classes or just to hang out in a safe space with friends.

We really have some amazing programming options and a really great lead staffing team. Unfortunately, we (like a lot of folks) are really struggling to get committed people to staff our programming. We’re looking for people who want to make a difference in our youth community, and have fun while doing it for 10-20 hours a week.

If you have questions, contact recreation supervisor Amanda Zollner 206-801-2642 or azollner@shorelinewa.gov

UW Med: Start the school year by getting your kids vaccinated

Friday, September 2, 2022

As students return to classrooms, pediatrician Dr. Beth Ebel says this is a sensible time for children to receive a booster COVID-19 vaccination, if they’re eligible.

“Getting this (current) third dose, or the booster dose, has been shown to provide better protection against the Omicron variant that we're going to see as kids get back to school,” said Ebel, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
“It's time for your kid to get the booster if he or she is above 5 years of age.”

On August 31, 2022 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized two new booster vaccines [fda.gov] engineered to target Omicron variants along with the original strain of COVID-19. Both are awaiting final emergency authorization from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) before they become available.

Older children may soon be eligible to receive one of the revamped booster vaccines, as the CDC is considering Pfizer-BioNTech's formulation for people ages 12 and up. The updated Moderna formulation will be available only to adults.

At this time, the CDC recommends that children 5 and older get one COVID-19 booster after completing their primary two-shot series. Some children over age 12 and who are moderately or severely immunocompromised are eligible for two booster shots.

Now is also a good time to ensure that children's routine immunization schedules are up to date, Ebel said, as many children have missed vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I see vaccines as freedom and as getting back to school, reclaiming our lives, and what we have lost for the last couple of years,” she said.
“Part of the path to that is to get covered for your vaccines so we prevent these easily preventable illnesses and keep our children well.”

Partnership between Bitter Lake Community Center and The Polytech brings cooking instruction to teens

Thursday, July 21, 2022

Butternut squash soup and photo
by Silver Hofsass
Bitter Lake Community Center hosts activities for every age group, and is especially focused on helping teens develop life skills and athletic skills to enjoy throughout a lifetime.

This year, BLCC is also offering cooking lessons, thanks to a partnership with The Polytech, a private high school that continues working with students through age 26 to assist with the transition to college, career, and adulthood.

The program is set up so that there is no cost to students or families, and all ingredients, equipment and the technology to stream classes is available at the community center.

The Polytech has offered culinary arts classes throughout the pandemic with students, and often their parents, cooking in their own kitchens.

At the same time, they watch a livestream of Chef Mina cooking the same recipes in a professional kitchen. She provides instruction and models the techniques she describes. At the same time, she can give direct feedback to students, helping prevent the rice from scorching or advising when vegetable slices need to be thinner.

By partnering with The Bitter Lake Community Center, students are able to utilize the large kitchen space there and cook together, making the chopping and preparation pieces go more quickly and adding a more enjoyable social aspect to classes.

“Our culinary arts classes provide excellent practice in executive function skills because of all the organizing of equipment and ingredients before beginning the process. Students are learning more than how to cook, and at the end of class they have the wonderful smells and delicious dishes that they have created,” says Reza Khastou, administrator of The Polytech and the driving force behind the summer culinary arts collaboration.

An additional benefit is that the first class includes instruction in food safety and students take the state’s online test to get their Food Worker Card, valid for 2 years and enabling them to work in restaurants, day care facilities, retirement community homes, and many other organizations where food and beverages are present.

This unique opportunity is possible through funding from Bright Future Dollars for Scholars, a non-profit providing scholarships to students who pursue vocational interests while in high school, Bitter Lake Community Center, and The Polytech, a private high school with transition services for students ages 16-26 located in Northgate.

For more information, contact Reza Khastou at reza.khastou@thepolytech.com.
