Teen Link: A help line for teens, by teens

Thursday, April 14, 2022

1-866-TEENLINK / 1-833-6546
6 - 10pm nightly
Teen Link is a confidential line for teens staffed by teen volunteers. It's a place to call to talk to someone about whatever is going on in life, from a bad day to serious topics such as suicide.

The line is open to anyone but mostly directed towards teenagers as peer to peer instead of normal crisis lines which are adults to teens. This makes the person feel more open and able to relate to a peer instead of an adult.

Teen volunteers are trained to support callers through whatever is going on with no judgement.

The volunteers are trained by Youth Crisis Mentors who are professionally trained to assist the youth volunteers. Youth Crisis Mentors also supervise all chats and phone calls that go through Teen Link.

Often at Teen Link there are times when callers need more than teenagers to help support them. When this happens they are connected with a crisis hotline and encouraged to seek professional help. Resources for these professionals are distributed by Teen Link.

All calls and chats are made through a call center at Teen Link's office. Volunteers come in regularly from 6-10pm every night which is when the call and chat line are open.

Teen Link serves all throughout the nation and is available in dozens of languages.

More information is available on the webpage: https://www.teenlink.org

Department of Health launches science contest for high school students

Saturday, February 19, 2022

OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Health’s (DOH) Washington Tracking Network (WTN) is launching the inaugural Washington Tracking Network Youth Science Contest

The WTN Youth Science Contest provides an opportunity for high school students across Washington to develop their science and communication skills while working with health and environmental data from their own communities.

Participants can choose from three tracks:
  1. Health Science – students will perform an analysis with WTN data to reveal correlations, impacts, and/or disparities
  2. Community Engagement – students will use WTN tools and data to address health and equity concerns. They will develop either a public policy proposal or work with a local organization to create or improve a project or program.
  3. Science Communication – students will identify an issue that is important to them and develop a message to increase awareness or drive action related to the issue

Each track requires students to use WTN data and examine how their project addresses equity issues within their communities.

Jennifer Sabel, WTN manager, said, “Students participating in this contest will gain knowledge about the health of their communities, how to work with data, and how to use that data to affect positive change.”

The contest is designed to have a broader appeal than traditional science competitions by bringing in the Community Engagement and Science Communication tracks.

“These tracks are the intersection of data and real-world impact,” said Sabel. “Science affects every aspect of our lives, and this is a chance for students to use knowledge to improve their communities. I am really looking forward to seeing the creative applications the students come up with.”

In developing the contest, DOH consulted with an advisory committee comprised of high school students.

“The students offered important insight into what would be interesting and motivating to their peers, and they helped shape the contest,” said Lize Williams, the DOH communications strategist who led the contest creation.
“Co-creation is one way we enact equity by centering the voices of those impacted by a program in that program’s design.”

Registration is open from February 17 to March 15, 2022 and the official contest period is from March 1 through April 30. Winners will be announced in early June.

WTN is a DOH program that makes public health data more accessible. The mission of WTN is to provide health and environmental data and tools, develop partnerships, and inform data-driven policy and programmatic decisions, with the goal of improving health and health equity in Washington.

Library Summer Reading Program for age 5 and up

Wednesday, June 9, 2021

The King County Library System (KCLS) encourages King County residents of all ages to participate in its annual Summer Reading Program from June 1 to August 31.

Participants ages 5 and up are invited to track minutes spent reading during the summer, with a 500-minute halfway goal and a 1,000-minute final goal. Preschoolers (birth to age 5) may complete a series of early literacy activities. Everyone who reads for 500 minutes or more can enter a drawing to win a gift certificate for books.

Participants may read anything they want, and reading to someone else or listening to an audiobook counts toward reading minutes. Browse through a selection of book recommendations, curated by KCLS staff, to find great titles and get started. With modified in-building services being offered at many KCLS libraries now, physical materials can either be picked up inside, or outside at a contactless Curbside to Go location or 24/7 lockers. See what’s available near you at kcls.org/visit.

Residents may also participate in fun and educational activities all summer long, such as arts and crafts workshops, music and magic programs, outdoor StoryWalks, STEM learning opportunities and a variety of literary events.

All programming will be held online, except for StoryWalks. StoryWalks are self-guided literary adventures located outside KCLS libraries and community spaces that lead readers along a stories’ path, page by page. Visit kcls.org/summer for more information about events and activities.

Participants may post photos of their reading activity on Instagram with the hashtag #ShareYourSummerReading. These can include photos of books they are reading, recent visits to StoryWalks or other literary activities they have completed. Sharing posts can help others discover the fun of summer reading.

Use the Beanstack app to sign up for the Summer Reading Program and log reading hours

Or, starting June 1, print a downloadable reading log to track hours instead. If patrons are using Beanstack to track their progress, they will be entered into the drawing automatically. If patrons are using a printed reading log, they will need to go to the Summer Reading Program page to enter the drawing manually.

Reading is important for all ages, and has been shown to decrease stress and increase empathy. It’s especially important to keep children’s minds active and engaged during the summer to prevent learning loss while students are out of school. Parents and caregivers can encourage reading by setting aside time every day to read together as a family.

“KCLS’ online Summer Reading Program offers a safe, innovative and fun way for families to keep up on reading and prevent the “summer slide,” said KCLS Executive Director Lisa Rosenblum. “We hope readers enjoy our virtual programming, and get lost in a great book or two this summer.”

Founded in 1942, the King County Library System (KCLS) is one of the busiest public library systems in the country. Serving the communities of King County (outside the city of Seattle), KCLS has 50 libraries and over 1.1 million cardholders.

In 2020, residents checked out more than 7.4 million digital eBooks and audiobooks through Rakuten OverDrive, making KCLS the No. 3 digital circulating library system in the world and the highest per capita in the U.S. In 2011, KCLS was named Library of the Year by Gale/Library Journal.

Local readers have access to King county libraries in Richmond Beach, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and Kenmore.
