Judi Macrae
OLYMPIA – The importance of civic education and the men and women who teach our state’s students about their government took center stage Monday, February 19, 2012.

Civic Education Day was held in the Legislative Building to honor those who teach civics and to create awareness about its importance.

“In order to have a truly representative democracy, Americans must have a thorough understanding of the process,” said Sen. Maralyn Chase, D-Shoreline, who sponsored a resolution commemorating the day. “We owe a debt of gratitude to the teachers here today who are being honored for their outstanding commitment to civics education.”

Nine finalists and two winners were honored as the Washington State Legislature's Civic Educators of the Year for 2012. Among the finalists was Judi MacRae of Shoreline.

MacRae teaches at Madrona School in Edmonds. Last year she worked with 4th-6th graders to introduce and lobby legislation through the process which encourages civil rights education. The students wrote letters, testified via the internet during a hearing on the bill and many of them were present when Gov. Chris Gregorie signed Senate Bill 5174 into law.

“Ms. MacRae proved to her students that they truly can have an impact on government,” Chase said. “It’s a great lesson not just for students, but for all of us.”

Criteria include excellence in teaching, a significant contribution to music beyond the classroom, and work done in a number of ways at the state and regional level. Hall of Fame nominees must also have brought about substantial improvements in the educational process, and have contributed significantly to the betterment of the profession through exemplary service. The award honors not just great teaching, but also acknowledges many contributions that recipients have made to the cause of music education throughout the state.

Frank Halferty, WMEA Hall of Fame
Halferty, himself a graduate of Shoreline High School, joins Einstein and Shorewood orchestral music director and WMEA president-elect Dan Wing in the Hall. John Law, Neil Lieurance, and Ken Noreen, retired Shoreline School District music teachers, are also in the Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held February 17, 2012 in Yakima, during the WMEA conference.

Shorewood teacher honored as top photography educator

Monday, December 19, 2011

Sally Tonkin, photography and English teacher at Shorewood High School, received the Honored Educator award recently at the Society for Photographic Education (SPE) Northwest Regional Conference. This was the first time this award has gone to a high school educator.

Tonkin was nominated by Walter Bodle, the founder of a non-profit organization for at-risk kids called Youth in Focus. She is a member of the board at YIF, which is an after-school program that uses intensive photography training as a tool to help disadvantaged teens develop personal voice, positive identity, social skills and artistic skills.

"Sally Tonkin is an exceptional, inspiring and motivational educator," her nomination read in part. She believes that the creation of a photograph is a transformative experience: it takes the photographer outside of him or herself and forces them to interact with the wider world. But, at the same time, it compels the photographer to look inward and examine and express how they see the world."

Sally has taught art, English and photography at Shorewood High School since 1995, following a career as a newspaper photographer. She was selected by the state as one of four teachers to develop standards for high school photography classes. She received an Adobe Fellowship for skills using software programs to help students see their creative concepts realized. Her students have consistently placed in the top three in the Washington State High School Photography Contest, and many have gone on to study photography in college.

SPE, a national nonprofit organization, provides not only a forum for the discussion of photography as a means of creative expression and cultural insight, but nurtures its development through teaching, criticism, and scholarship. To view Sally's photography work, see her website

Shorecrest High School teacher Jennifer Etter honored as ‘Symetra Hero in the Classroom’

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Jennifer Etter - Hero in the Classroom

Symetra Financial and the Seattle Seahawks honored Shorecrest High School teacher Jennifer Etter as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” on September 23, 2011 during a special school assembly. Etter is a ninth-grade teacher at Shorecrest.

“Jennifer Etter successfully combines what teens need to learn in school and in life in a classroom environment of mutual respect, where learning is cool. I admire a teacher who can turn on a light in a teen’s brain, all the more remarkable when the subjects are English, grammar, Shakespeare and poetry,” said Susan Garber Yonts, the parent of two of Etter’s students.
“Ms. Etter lays out a difficult coursework syllabus, but her investment in her students is clear. These are freshmen girls and boys, who over the course of the year walk out of her class as they should — a little exhausted, a lot challenged and proud of their accomplishments.” Garber Yonts nominated Etter for the Symetra Hero in the Classroom award.
“Jennifer Etter demands and receives excellence,” adds Garber Yonts. “She instills a sense of confidence at a time when self-esteem and self-confidence are hard to come by and equally cherished. She does this at the entry-level of high school so that the kids understand early that their investment is in themselves, not her, and is something that will pay off for the remainder of their high school years and into their adult lives.”

Etter is one of 24 K-12 teachers across the Puget Sound area who will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2011 NFL season. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations, where they receive tickets to a Seahawks home game. They also are acknowledged during an on-field presentation at CenturyLink Field.

Etter was recognized at the September 25 Seahawks game when the Seahawks took on the Arizona Cardinals.

Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The winners are selected based on their ability to balance the core curriculum with students’ individual needs; build trust among students, parents and the community; and invest in their students’ long-term success.

In addition to honoring exceptional teachers on and off the field, each of the schools represented by a 2011 teacher Hero is eligible for an MVP Award, which provides funding to enhance learning in Seattle-area schools. Three $10,000 grants will be awarded at the end of the 2011 football season.

Shoreline Schools Teacher of the Year: Becky Edy

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Becky Edy, fourth grade teacher at Highland Terrace Elementary, has been selected as the 2011 Shoreline School District Teacher of the Year.

2011 Shoreline Teacher of the Year Becky Edy, second from right, with Highland Terrace Principal Mike VanOrden, Director of Teaching and Learning Sue Porter and Superintendent Sue Walker.

She will be honored at a reception at 6:30 pm on Monday, May 9 in the Shoreline Center lobby. Shoreline Teacher Appreciation Week, which honors all certificated staff members in the District, will be celebrated May 9 to 13.

Edy has taught in Shoreline for 29 years overall, and at Highland Terrace since 1996. She has also taught at Brookside, Echo Lake, North City and Ridgecrest during her career.

“Becky is an extraordinary teacher who creates individualized learning experiences for all of her students in a highly personalized and caring environment,” her nomination read in part. “She is adored by her students, valued by parents and admired by her colleagues. On top of it all, Becky is a lifelong learner; she is always looking for new and better ways to provide the best education possible for her students.”

Her lifelong learning has included teaching in Shanghai and a 2009 University of Washington summer fellowship to Jordan. She has served on numerous school and District committees, including elementary reading, math and writing curriculum adoptions, the Puget Sound Writing Project and is Highland Terrace Response to Intervention coach.

Becky is asked to serve in leadership roles because of the high degree of respect the people she works with have for her.

“She is the most conscientious and hard-working teacher I have ever had the pleasure of working with,” wrote a colleague. “Seven days a week and around the clock she is thinking of ways to help her students.”

Her classroom is a remarkable place for kids to learn and grow. A parent wrote: “This evening before dinner I was talking with my son about school. He explained to me how much he is enjoying learning fractions in Ms. Edy’s class. At this age it is very important that kids develop a sense of desire to learn and she has done that.”

The Shoreline Teacher of the Year is selected by a committee of staff, administrators and parents from nominations received from throughout the District. Becky will receive a $500 grant from the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation and will be Shoreline’s nominee for the 2012 Washington State Teacher of the Year.

Shorecrest teacher receives state CTE program of the year award

Sunday, March 27, 2011

Trent Mitchell.  Photo courtesy Shoreline Schools
Trent Mitchell, video production teacher at Shorecrest High School, has been honored with the Program of the Year award by the Washington Industrial Technology Education Association (WITEA).

Mitchell accepted the award, which honors outstanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, at a recent WITEA meeting in Wenatchee.

Mitchell and his Shorecrest students have attracted wide acclaim for their innovative video projects, including the "Hey Ya" lip-dub video in 2009 and "The Social Experiment" last December.

The Shorecrest video and the one following from Shorewood went viral with more than 1.5 million combined views on YouTube.

The Social Experiment began with Mitchell's comment in class that his students couldn't give up their social networks for a week. The students took up that challenge and soon more than 600 students were involved between Shorecrest and Shorewood.

The experiment quickly attracted media attention, with ABC World News Tonight with Dianne Sawyer selecting the students and staff of both high schools as its "Persons of the Week."

"I am very honored to receive the CTE Program of the Year Award," Mitchell said. "This award is a true reflection on all the fine work the Shorecrest video students have completed in the past year; from Lip Dubs, to Film Festivals, and to the Social Experiment. I am very fortunate to work in a building and within a district that is so supportive of the CTE students and teachers. I can't wait to see what the students create next."

Mitchell has taught video production, digital photography and animation at Shorecrest for eight years and is a National Board Certified teacher. He is a graduate of Central Washington University with a degree in Video Communications.

Mitchell worked as a freelance sports videographer for the Mariners, Seahawks, Sonics, and Emerald Downs before receiving his Masters in Teaching Degree from Seattle University.
