Einstein MS teacher is latest Seahawks Heroes in the Classroom honoree

Monday, September 27, 2010

Photo: Marcia Garrett, center, with two members of the Sea Gals following the announcement of her selection as a Seahawks Hero in the Classroom at Einstein Middle School.

Marcia Garrett, science teacher at Einstein Middle School, is the latest Shoreline School District recipient of the Heroes in the Classroom program sponsored by the Seattle Seahawks and Symetra Financial.

Symetra Heroes in the Classroom is a community program that recognizes Shoreline, Renton and Seattle teachers for outstanding leadership and instructional skills during the Seattle Seahawks season.

Garrett was honored by Symetra and the Seahawks at a special event in her classroom on September 23 and was recognized prior to the Seahawks home game against the San Diego Chargers on September 26. She received a team jersey; two tickets to the Seahawks game and on-field passes; and a $350 Office Max gift card for classroom supplies.

Garrett was nominated by an Einstein co-worker who wrote in part: "She is an outstanding professional who is continually learning and growing as an educator, helping other teachers develop professionally, offering leadership in the school, improving student learning, enhancing the curriculum and building connections with the community."

With Garrett's leadership, Einstein has created the Edible Schoolyard at the school, securing grants and adding raised garden beds, a greenhouse, compost bin, and rain catchment basins. Students raised vegetables and celebrated their first harvest at the end of the school year.  (See story: The Edible Schoolyard).

Twenty-four teachers from the three districts will be selected and honored in their classrooms and on the field during Seahawks home games this season.

In addition, Symetra and the Seahawks will make a $10,000 donation to three participating schools following the 2010 season. Funds will be designated to support a specific student achievement program at each school.

Nominations of teachers can be made at Seattle Seahawks/Symetra Heroes in the Classroom website.

Tim Murray, English teacher at Shorewood High School, is the first 2010 recipient of the Seattle Sounders FC Golden Scarf. Murray was honored on April 3 prior to the Sounders match against the New York Red Bulls.

In the club's inaugural season in 2009, the club established a tradition before the match starts that puts on display the intense passion of Seattle's soccer community.

The club selects a member of the community that is presented with a special gold scarf, which has come to symbolize the game of soccer, which they raise over their heads, signaling to the fans to do the same.

Murray was nominated for the honor by his wife, Kate Laughlin, and selected in a vote of Sounders fans.

Tim grew up playing soccer and was eventually recruited to Chicago's Croatian League, playing all over, including Europe. He went to college in Ohio on a partial scholarship, and has continued to play in various leagues here. He serves as coach of his son's team in Ballard.

"Talk with Tim for just 5 minutes, and you'll be amazed at the depth of his knowledge and passion for the beautiful game," his nomination read in part. "He embodies the ideal of community: works in service every day as a teacher, then keeps on giving more."

Tim is the long-time adviser to his school"s Interact Club, which is the student branch of Rotary International. The club performs community service throughout the school year. Tim is also a volunteer facilitator for his neighborhood library's book group, and assists with volunteer activities at his children's schools. He also participates every year in his family's MS Walk team, Team Laugh.

Joneen Richards, 2010 Shoreline Teacher of the Year

By Craig Degginger, PIO, Shoreline Schools
Joneen Richards, Spanish teacher at Einstein Middle School, has been selected as the 2010 Shoreline School District Teacher of the Year.

“She is compassionate, caring and the consummate professional,” a colleague wrote in nominating Richards for the award. “Joneen’s positive attitude is an inspiration to both her colleagues and her students.”

Richards has taught Spanish I and II at Einstein since 1992. Whenever one enters her classroom, it is immediately evident that students are not only learning, but they having fun doing so.

One day the class is turned into a Spanish marketplace, with the students dressed as tourists and bartering for goods in Spanish; the next day they are learning to cook authentic Spanish cuisine utilizing proper vocabulary and ingredients. In another activity, they follow Richards’ instructions to get from Einstein to the Shoreline Center while “driving” their cars on a virtual map on their laptops.

“The students are engaged in the variety of activities that get them speaking, reading and writing Spanish,” her nomination read in part. “Joneen succeeds in giving her students experiences that are as diverse as their learning styles. But Señora Richards does not teach only language; she teaches culture.”

Richards brings to her students her personal travel experiences, which enrich Einstein students’ lives and deepen their appreciation for the diversity of Spanish speaking cultures.

She is a Minnesota native and a graduate of Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her husband, Rev. Jack Richards, is pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Everett. They are the parents of two sons.

Richards will be honored at a reception on Monday, May 3 at 6:30 pm in the Shoreline Center lobby, prior to the School Board meeting that evening. The community is invited. Shoreline will celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week May 2 to 8.

The Shoreline Teacher of the Year is selected by a committee of teachers, administrators and parents from nominations received from throughout the District. She will receive a $500 grant from the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation. Richards’ nomination will be forwarded for Washington State Teacher of the Year consideration.
