Photo: The day started with wildfire haze

Smoky sunrise photo by Mike Remarcke

We started the day Friday with smokey skies obscuring the Cascades. The smoke persisted during the day and into the evening.

When the sun looks like this, you know there's something in the air - smoke, fog, smog, haze, etc.

The thick layer of smoke was noticeable but not unbearable for short exposures, except for those with impaired breathing.

The irony is that the unhealthy air protected us from the high temperatures predicted for today.

By sunset, the haze obscured the Olympics but left the ferry in view and blazed a fiery path across the water.

Thursday: Sunset and smoke

Friday, August 13, 2021

Winds are bringing wildfire smoke into the Puget Sound region.

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency expects smoke to continue or worsen on Friday.

Some areas may have higher concentrations for short periods of time if additional smoke plumes move into the area.

Smoke should begin to clear on Saturday.

Updates as conditions develop at the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency www.pscleanair.gov

Note the layers of air in the photo - it looks relatively clear at ground level. Then a fairly thick layer topped with mild haze over a blue sky and wispy white cloud.

Smoky sun but good air quality

Monday, August 2, 2021

A sunset view of Sunday's smoky skies. The sky is clouded by wildfire smoke but reflects a shining path for the Edmonds ferry.

The smoke was pretty thick at this point but still didn't make it down to the ground to impede breathing.

Sunday's sunset amplified by what appears to be smoke in the air. Beautiful but hopefully just pollution under the heat dome instead of the beginning of a summer of wildfire smoke.

The sun is still out there

Tuesday, February 2, 2021

Just a reminder that the sun still shines even if we don't always see it.

We may live in a mostly grey world but we're not under three feet of snow like the rest of the U.S. But then I'm not a fan of snow and cold. I'm happy for it to stay in the mountains for the skiers and snowboarders.

Puget Sound sunset

The sun was shining on the sea,
      Shining with all his might:
He did his very best to make
The billows smooth and bright —
And this was odd, because it was
      The middle of the night.
