Very crowded fishing pier in Edmonds

Friday, October 2, 2020

Hundreds of people were jammed onto the fishing pier at the Edmonds waterfront Friday evening. Most seemed to be wearing masks as they fished and watched the sunset.

The smoke / fog seems to be lower in the evening or perhaps the setting sun just shows it better.

California is sharing its sadness from the wildfires

Friday, September 4, 2020

It's sad that something so beautiful has been caused by something as devastating as wildland fires in California.

The smoke is thick in the air but it did not reach the ground, nor did we have to breath it. We are now expecting off-shore winds that will blow the smoke away from Puget Sound toward Montana and Colorado.

At least for now.

Do you smell smoke?

Sunday, August 16, 2020

Wildfires have been burning in Siberia, inside the Arctic Circle since the beginning of January. Here's a webpage with stunning photos from Greenpeace International in July.

They show megafires burning through the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia, Russia.

It’s estimated that fires have burnt more than 20.9 million hectares of land in Russia, and 10.9 million hectares of forest, since the start of 2020.
The fires are being helped by unusually warm temperatures, including a reading of more than 38° Celsius (100° Fahrenheit) in the town of Verkhoyansk — the hottest on record inside the Arctic Circle.

The smoke twists its way through the mountain ranges of Canada and makes its way to Puget Sound. So far we have just a hint of smoke near the ground. Tonight's sunset, captured by Jan Hansen in west Shoreline, shows the amount of smoke in the air.

A peaceful sunset in Shoreline

Just a gentle, peaceful sunset in Shoreline this evening. None of the showy, flaming, lurid colors of many other evenings. Just muted tones and a warm glow.

Setting sun

Photos by Jan Hansen

Friday's sunset was particularly beautiful, so Jan Hansen sent a series.

These are taken from west Shoreline. The sunset is slightly to the north over Puget Sound.

And finally, the last spectacular scene is a glowing orb and a grey sky as the sun is about to disappear behind the Olympics.

Sunsets Sunday

It fascinates me that the sunsets look like an entirely different landscape from one minute to the next.

These photos were taken within a few minutes of each other. The cloud front and center still holds the same shape.

I thought I had them in time order because one seems to have more daylight but now I'm not sure.

I used to live in a place where the sunset was the high point of the day and everyone came out to silently watch the sun go down over the water. And now I live in such a place again.
