While most students were starting their summer vacations, a group of 10 students from Cascade K-8 and Shorecrest High School were facing some tough competition from over 8,000 other middle and high school students at the National Technology Student Association (TSA) Conference in Orlando, Florida on June 21-25.

The four students from Cascade and six from Shorecrest earned the opportunity to represent their schools and compete at the conference after placing high in various events at the state TSA competition earlier in the year.

While the competition was definitely tougher at the national level, the Cascade and Shorecrest students were up to the challenge.

The Cascade K-8 video game design team, represented at the national conference by Elena Tapia and Andrew Edwards, took home the first place trophy in Middle School Video Game Design. The team’s role-playing game “Blackfire” was designed and created by Tapia, Edwards, Jaeden Caldwell, Jack Cameron, Molly Grauer and Liam Prestia throughout this past school year.

Shorecrest’s technology problem-solving team of Alex Resha Myles Parent were top 10 finalists in the High School Problem-Solving Competition, where participants were given a challenge on site, then have a specific amount of time to design and test a prototype to solve the challenge

In addition to the competitions, students also participated in learning workshops and business meetings with students from all over the country, as well as Turkey, Japan and Germany.

“The leadership and management skills that the TSA has to offer have guided me through structuring and completing many projects both inside and outside of school, improving both my grades and my satisfaction with my work,” said Edwards.
“Overall, I would recommend the TSA to any student who aspires to effectively express their talents… and maybe even get a cool trophy!”

Since 1978, TSA has been working with students in technology courses to help students learn to compete, and lead in technology fields. TSA has chapters in 49 States, and 250,000 members in middle and high schools across the country. Washington currently has the largest growth in middle school level TSA programs.

Shorecrest and Cascade K-8 TSA teams advance to Nationals

Tuesday, April 11, 2017

2017 Shorecrest TSA Team at the State Competition in Yakima

Shorecrest High School and Cascade K-8 Community School advance to the National Technology Student Association (TSA) Competition in Orlando, Florida. Both schools won awards at the Washington State TSA Competition in Yakima in mid-March and earned the invitation to compete nationally.

“We are scheduling fundraising events over the next month and a half as we race the clock to send our teams to nationals,” said Shorecrest TSA Fundraising Chair Theresa Greco. “This is an extraordinary opportunity to compete for a national title – representing Lake Forest Park and Shoreline.”

Shorecrest High School won first in Animatronics and second place in Recycled Fashion Design Technology. Cascade K-8 Community School earned second place with the Community Service Video, and third place in Forensic Technology and Tech Bowl, a STEM based trivia contest.

Both Shorecrest High School and Cascade K-8 Community School TSA chapters are entering their third years.

“The students and their families are working hard to make this dream a reality. We are proud of their drive to learn and reaching Nationals so soon,” said Shorecrest TSA advisor Emily Slack.

TSA represents 2,000 schools preparing students for careers in technology, innovation, design, and engineering. Member schools integrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts through co-curricular CTE/STEM activities, competitive events and related programs.

“I am so proud of our kids and the fun they are having in science and technology. They are demonstrating that the sky’s the limit in technology with their creations,” said Chrisy Francescutti, Cascade K-8 Community School Principal.

The Shorecrest team must raise $9,000 and Cascade K-8 Community School an additional $5,000 in five weeks in order to compete in the national competition.

The students are rapidly working to get the word out of their need to travel to nationals.

“Raising the $9,000 dollars for Shorecrest and $5,000 for Cascade K-8 Community School to pay for travel and rooms to the national competition is a heavy lift. These kids are determined to reach Orlando and represent.” stated Shorecrest TSA advisor Kari Potter.

In 2016, Shorecrest students brought home one award, and won 9 awards this year. Last year, Cascade K-8 Community School sent two projects to nationals. There are so many programs that seek to recruit girls and people of color to STEM. TSA never says they are trying to do that, and yet they do it so well,” said Cascade K-8 Community School Advisor, Becca Drury.

 “One of the things that impresses me about TSA is that there is so much diversity in both the membership and leadership.”

Donations are directed to Shorecrest High School, ATTN: ASB TSA Account, 15343 25th Avenue NE, Shoreline, WA 98155. Funds will be pooled between both schools for travel and expenses.

Op-Ed: Shoreline STEM Festival and Science Fair is a "Must-See"

Monday, March 20, 2017

A young exhibitor at last year's Shoreline STEM Fair
Photo by Peter Tong
Ray Koelling lived in Lake Forest Park for 25 years. His son went through Shoreline Schools from LFP Elementary to Kellogg to Shorecrest.

Ray organized the Shoreline Science Fair at Shoreline Community College over five years ago. Now that he has moved to Spokane, others are running the Fair, with Ray's enthusiastic support.
~~~~~~~
By Ray Koelling
I would like to offer my full and enthusiastic support for the “must see” Shoreline STEM Festival and Science Fair. It is being held May 20, 2017 at Shoreline Community College.
My name is Ray Koelling. Mariko and I lived in Lake Forest Park until recently. Our son Kennosuke went through the Shoreline School District and graduated Shorecrest in 2010. Currently he is about to finish his Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering at UW.
About six years ago, I helped organize and start up the very first edition of the Shoreline Science Fair. Great people helped with that original fair and each year the fair continues to grow, expand and improve.
It is an important event in K-12 STEM education for the local region and worthy of everyone’s support.
Whether a student eventually will work in a STEM profession or not, it cannot be over-emphasized how critical it is for every person in society to have a firmer and more solidly grounded idea about STEM.
Environmental, local, personal, global, political, social, technological and economic decisions are currently being made almost entirely emotionally and irrationally by societies.
Unfortunately, without the critical “thinking through” and reasoning that is a basic and easily learned tool and forms the very fiber of STEM, positive progress in society is elusive, sporadic and can even come to a dead stop.
Although I came to Spokane to retire, I’m now on the lecture faculty for the UW School of Medicine in Spokane. I’ve not forgotten students and science fairs. I’m still on the Board of the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair (the 60th year, March 31/April 1 in Bremerton). Hoping to see some of you there.
Additionally, on March 16, the first ever Eastern Washington Regional Science and Engineering Fair was held in Spokane and which I helped organize and start. At least 25 students and teachers from that fair will travel 300 miles and attend the state fair in Bremerton. The big news is that two superior projects and students from Spokane are being sent, all expenses paid, directly to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles this May to compete against 1,800 high school students from 70 countries. I hope Shoreline will one day soon be represented at both state and internationally.
From President Obama’s 2011 State of the Union Address: “The quality of our math and science education lags behind many other nations.” “We need to teach our kids that it is not just the winner of the Super Bowl who deserves to be celebrated, but the winner of the Science Fair”.
Please come see the 700 students and projects from all around the state in Bremerton March 31 and April 1. And look me up then.
Do be sure to attend the Shoreline Fair on May 20. Think about and see how your kids can turn a good science project into awards, scholarships, cash and other prizes of over a million and a half dollars we give away every spring at the Washington State Fair. Shoreline students deserve the chance to be part of those rewards and have that lifetime opportunity.
A panel of distinguished speakers encouraged
the young women to pursue careers in STEM
King’s High School Cyberknights presented the Women in STEM conference in Shoreline on October 15th at CRISTA's Schirmer Auditorium.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The women in STEM conference was designed to show young women that they too can rock the STEM field. Through inspiring speakers and joining with like-minded ladies, we hope to spark a passion for the STEM field in the hearts of young women from all around the world.
Lauren Stroemel created and ran the event.
The women in STEM conference was inspired by the gender gap in the STEM field.
“I’ve always been passionate about getting more women interested in STEM because of the struggles I myself have faced and overcome,” said Cyberknight Lauren Stroemel, who created and ran the event.
“I wanted to help encourage the women and girls that are interested in STEM so they don’t lose hope and drop something that they might be gifted in.
"What better way to inspire young ladies than to connect with other women who face similar trials, but hold the same passion in their hearts?"
Deb Limb, former Director of Structural Engineering
at Boeing, was the keynote speaker
Keynote speaker Mrs. Deb Limb, the former Director of Structural Engineering at Boeing, along with a panel of experienced STEM professionals shared their experiences as women in the STEM field. They gave advice to the next generation of women entering STEM through a question and answer session.
It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the STEM field from experienced professionals and to fellowship with other women with a passion for STEM.
King's High School is located in Shoreline.
On Saturday May 9, 2015, the third annual Shoreline STEM Festival will be held at Shoreline Community College from 10:00am to 2:00pm. This rapidly growing event is held for the educational benefit of all the students of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park thanks to the support and generosity of Shoreline Community College, the Shoreline School District and the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation.
Everyone in the community is invited to the free event to see some of the very amazing science work of our K-12 students and to talk to them about their individual projects.
In addition, there will be exhibitors representing many different areas of STEM with tables for everyone to see along with many hands-on activities. Students can visit tables with their own “Passport” to education that can be stamped and which district teachers might be interested in seeing.
Reptile Man (12:30-1:30), robots all over, DNA mystery investigations, butterflies, insects, local environmental groups, lab medicine, histology and many, many more diverse exhibitors will be there.
A Washington State science fair table will provide students with information into participation in higher level science fairs where millions of dollars in awards and scholarships are handed out.
Awards for schools and students, brief talks from highly regarded professionals regarding females in STEM and wrap up will be from 1:30-2:00. It is an educational event not to be missed. For more information and to keep up with what is happening visit the webpage.
