First Annual Shoreline Slam High School Tennis Tournament a breakout success

Tuesday, July 30, 2024

Rylie Gettman, Shorewood and Luke Madath,
Bishop Blanchet, earned Gold in mixed doubles
By Barb Smith

July 29, 2024 Shoreline, WA

The First Annual Shoreline Slam High School Tennis Tournament Presented by Tennis Center Sand Point was a resounding success, attracting 162 players from over 35 different high schools from Friday July 26 through Sunday July 28, 2024.

Jointly hosted by the Shorewood and Shorecrest High School tennis programs, with matches played at both Kellogg Middle School and Shorewood High School courts, the Shoreline Slam attracted athletes from all across Washington and as far away as Vancouver Island, Canada and even Luxembourg.

The Shoreline Slam was inspired by the Snohomish Summer Smash, an annual tournament created nine years ago for tennis players looking to compete in the off season against their high school peers.

Offering Gold, Silver and Bronze divisions, both tournaments cater to players of all abilities, from junior varsity to state medalists.

Senior Luke Madath, Bishop Blanchet, claimed first place
in Boys singles, Boys doubles, and Mixed doubles.

Luke Madath, a senior at Bishop Blanchet and 5th place boys doubles medalist at the 2024 WA State 3A Tennis Championships, dominated the event, claiming first place honors in each of the Boys Gold Singles, Boys Gold Doubles and Gold Mixed Doubles events.

Madath defeated Henry Zhu from The Overlake School 6-1, 6-4, then teamed up with Peter Kosten, a senior at Shorewood, to claim the Boys Gold Doubles title with a score of 6-4, 6-2 over Zhu and his Overlake teammate, Benjamin Ta

For his last victory of the weekend, Madath teamed up for Mixed Doubles with Shorewood Junior Rylie Gettmann, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Nalu Akiona of Edmonds Woodway and Addie Streidl of Lakeside

Kosten, Gettmann, Akiona and Streidl are all former WA State 3A Tennis medalists.

Shorewood Gold Doubles Rylie Gettmann and Alex Mignogna

Gettmann also claimed multiple trophies, teaming up with Shorewood teammate Alex Mignogna to win Girls Gold Doubles 6-1, 6-1 over Streidl and her Lakeside teammate, Caroline Carter.

Shorewood Junior Carlota Garibay Romero
claimed the Girls Gold Singles title
Shorewood Junior Carlota Garibay Romero claimed the Girls Gold Singles title over Gettmann 6-0, 6-2, having secured the Girls Gold Singles and Gold Mixed Doubles titles at the Snohomish Summer Smash the prior weekend.

"We are thrilled with the turnout and the level of competition we witnessed at our inaugural Shoreline Slam," said Arnie Moreno, head coach of the Shorewood High School tennis program.
"This tournament has set a high standard, and we look forward to making it an annual tradition that continues to inspire and connect young tennis players."

“When we started planning this event, we were hoping to have 80 kids registered,” said Leslie Boyd of Shorewood Boosters.

“To have over double that number participate in our very first year shows us just how much kids value friendly competition against their peers. We are so happy to have been able to provide them with this opportunity.”

Rob Mann, head coach of the Shorecrest High School tennis program, added, "The collaboration between our schools and the enthusiastic participation from the players, families and volunteers made this event a resounding success.
'We are very excited about the future of the Shoreline Slam and the positive impact it will continue to have on our local tennis community for years to come."

Final results are attached, with more information available at Shoreline Slam.

Shorewood players score big at the Snohomish Summer Smash

Tuesday, July 23, 2024

Shorewood’s Carlota Garibay Romero
took the Girls Gold Singles title

One hundred eighty-five tennis players traveled from as far South as Vancouver and as far North as Bellingham, making their way to the Snohomish Valley to see who would come out on top at the 9th Annual Snohomish Summer Smash presented by Columbia Athletic Club- Silver Lake.

Shorewood classmates Carlota Garibay Romero and Xander Gordon
took the Mixed Doubles Gold championship

When the smoke cleared, among those holding the coveted Champion t-shirts was Shorewood’s Carlota Garibay Romero, who took the Girls Gold Singles title before teaming up with classmate Xander Gordon to take the Mixed Doubles Gold championship.

Sponsored this year by Columbia Athletic Club-Silver Lake, the Summer Smash was started in 2015 as an alternative for high school players who wanted to take part in competitive tennis but not play in USTA tournaments.

Participation in the four-day event has grown exponentially since the pandemic, with this year’s turnout nearly triple the total from 2019. Players interested in learning more about the tournament can go to Snohomish Summer Smash.

Ben Borgida finishes in third place in the Washington State Men's Amateur Golf Championship

Sunday, July 21, 2024

Amid the offseason for the Washington State men's golf team, redshirt sophomore and 2022 Shorewood graduate Ben Borgida made a splash, finishing third place in the Washington State Men's Amateur Championship at The Links at Moses Pointe, in Moses Lake, Washington.

Over the course of the three-day tournament the Wazzu product shot 10-under. Borgida shot back-to-back 69s over the first two days and saw his lowest round of the tournament the final day, firing a 68 with six birdies.

"Overall, I feel great about my performance. I was able to use what I had to my advantage and made sure to stick to my game," Borgida explained post round.

The redshirt sophomore finished his first season seeing action with a round under par in the Cougars final tournament win at the 2024 National Golf Invitational, and the rising sophomore continues to build off that going into next season.

"This finish gives me a lot of confidence leading into the season because I know my B-game is good enough to compete with the best amateurs in the state," Borgida added. "I'm going to continue to be grateful that I have the opportunity to play in the summer and get ready for my next season for the Cougs."

Four individual track & field athletes and four teams broke longstanding records at Shorewood during the past school year

Tuesday, July 9, 2024

The May 23-25, 2024 state track meet was remarkable for Shorewood High School as four athletes broke school records that had stood from 14 to 42 years.

Individual events
  • 400m (fr 1989): Mila Fotinatos 58.43
  • 1600m (fr 1982): Keiyu Mamiya 4:13.60
  • 3200m (fr 2009): Otto Erhart 9:19.28
  • Pole Vault (fr 2023): Ava Enriquez 12’9”

Paul Villanueva, Co-Head Coach XC / Co-Head Coach Track (Sprints/Relays), Shorewood High School accepted the challenge to find information on the records being broken.

Athletic.net has records form 2006 on, but before that it is a matter of searching old yearbooks and programs.

Here are the results of his research into records broken during the 2023-2024 school year:

Ava Enriquez. Photo courtesy Shoreline Schools

Ava Enriquez, a junior,
first broke the Pole Vault record her freshman year (keep in mind, she just started learning to Pole Vault the 2nd week of her freshman year track season). At the time the school record was 10'7" from 2oo3 by Laura Weigel. Not sure what Laura is up to right now but at one point in time was working in schools.

Ava has since broken the Pole Vault record multiple times, 1st at State as a freshman with a vault of 11 feet, then breaking it four times her sophomore year ultimately finishing with a new record of 12'6" at State (ranking her the #9 sophomore in the nation), then this year as a junior finished with a new record of 12'9" at State (currently the #16 junior in the whole nation).

Top 3 Shorewood marks include Ava, Laura, then Tiara Krismunundo (2002 10'6", Laura's teammate whose record she broke, and now high school teacher in Tri-Cities). The significance of these marks in 2002 and 2003 is that girls' Pole Vault didn't become a sanctioned high school event in Track & Field until the late 90's (not sure exactly what year in Washington) and didn't become a full medal event in the Olympics until 2000.

According to an article on worldathletics.org "It could be said that 1998 was the year in which the women's pole vault took flight." So from the history, looks like Shorewood was really an early pioneer in girls Pole Vault.

Mila Fotinatos. Photo courtesy Shoreline Schools

Mila Fotinatos, a sophomore
, first broke the 35 year old 400 meter record at WesCo South League Championships on Friday, May 10th with a time of 58.56. then again breaking her own record at State prelims in May with a time of 58.43. The previous record from 1989 was by Elizabeth Jeffries with a time of 58.61 but we don't have very much information beyond that. That was what was on the record board before we arrived at Shorewood as coaches.

From previous State meet results, we know Elizabeth ran 58.69 at the State meet in 1989 where she also ran in the 4x400m relay that placed 4th. The same 4x400m relay owns the current school record for the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:58.31 with relay participants of Terri Jeffries (maybe a sister), Ilene Tolleson, Sumiko Huff, and Elizabeth Jeffries.

Keiyu Mamiya. Photo by Todd Linton

Keiyu Mamiya, a senior,
first broke the 42 year old 1600 meter record at Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham on April 6th. At the time we weren't aware it was a broken record but after some research, the time on our record board was indeed broken. We found in that research that the record in our Athletic.net electronic database is incorrectly recorded. The record was from 1982 by Chris Caviezel with a time of 4:17.45 at the State meet in 1982.

Keiyu first broke the record with a time of 4:15.51, then his teammate Otto Erhart, a junior, broke the record with a time of 4:15.38 at Oregon Relays in Eugene, OR on April 20th.  Then at State Keiyu reclaimed the record placing 7th in 3A with a time of 4:13.60 officially breaking the record even if the incorrectly recorded time in our Athletic dot net electronic database were to be correct (4:13.67 is in the electronic database - but by State meet records, that was the place above Chris and Chris ran the 4:17.45 time). Chris Caviezel was back at Shorewood as a coach in 1995 and was very proud of the record (at the time of the 1982 record Shorewood was only 4-5 years in its existence) - we just found this out and look forward to hearing more from a former coach on that staff. Keiyu is going to continue running collegiately at Williams College on the East Coast.

Otto Erhart. Photo by Todd Linton

Otto Erhart, a junior
, broke the 15 year old 3200 meter record at State placing 10th.  The record was last set in 2009 by Chip Jackson at the WesCo South Championships when Chip would qualify for the State meet the next week at Districts, and place 12th at the State meet. Chip went on to run collegiately at Western Washington University. Chip also held our 5k Cross Country school record (from what we've seen on record) before Otto would go on to break that last fall during Cross Country season at the Northwest District 1 Championships. Chip would go on in 2012 to run on the West Region and GNAC All-Star team while also being a GNAC Academic All-Star in 2011 and 2012.

All four of our current Shorewood record holders are excellent in the classroom also and involved in various activities.

In addition, here is a list of school records broken by our athletic teams this year

  •  4x200m Relay (fr 2017): Andrew Pickett, Hayes Stetler, Avery Lagasca, Aidan MacDonald 1:31.52 - not a State level Championships event for WA but this year run weekly in our League meets
  • 4x800m Relay (fr 2023): Max Billett, Luke Gillingham, Otto Erhart, Keiyu Mamiya 7:57.25 - not a regular weekly event (maybe 2-3 times a season) - some States have it at their State Championships.
  • Distance Medley Relay (fr 2023): Max Billett, Avery Lagasca, Luke Gillingham, Keiyu Mamiya 10:22.06 (1200m-400m-800m-1600m) - not a regular weekly event (maybe 2-3 times a season) - some States have it at their State Championships
  • 1600m Sprint Medley Relay (fr 2018): Maddie Brouillard, Mila Fotinatos, Harper Lara-Kerr, Hanna Bruno 4:22.42 (200m-200m-400m-800m) - not a regular weekly event (maybe once a season)
  • 4x400m Mixed Relay (fr 2019): Avery Lagasca, Hanna Bruno, Luke Gillingham, Maddie Brouillard 3:51.09 (In Olympic program for first time in 2020 - Male-Female-Male-Female order) - not a regular weekly event (maybe twice a season)
This was a really phenomenal year for us!

Shorewood’s Isaak Abraham named HeraldNet 2024 Boys Soccer Player of the Year

Thursday, July 4, 2024

2023 photo when he was named
Athlete of the Week
Taras McCurdie
wrote a great article in HeraldNet about Isaak Abraham being named the HeraldNet 2024 Boys Soccer Player of the year.

Abraham and coach Shaun Warner helped lead Shorewood atop the Wesco 3A/2A standings while also earning back-to-back Class 3A District 1 trophies and being a Class 3A state contender.

Warner said,
“The way he went into the playoff games, it wasn’t like just all of a sudden we needed him because he’s so much better. Everyone played better (when he was on the pitch). Everyone played with more excitement. Everyone was pumped up,” Warner continued.
“I always say my definition of a great soccer player is someone that makes the people around them better. And without a doubt Isaak is that player.”

Shorecrest grad featured in Seattle Times sports article

Monday, July 1, 2024

Skylar Shibayama
Skylar Shibayama, 2012 Shorecrest graduate, Ridgecrest native, and son of Gerry and Jennifer Shibayama, is featured in a Seattle Times sports article by Adam Jude.

Shibayama is the Mariners' director of baseball strategy, and oversees the advance scouting department.

He is credited with modernizing and streamlining statistics for the team.

"Until Shibayama arrived, the Mariners were still printing out sheets of stats before every game, stacks an inch or two thick for the coaching staff to pore through. Shibayama’s objective was to streamline all that data and make it digestible and usable on the field."

Shibayama is now one of Mariners Manager Scott Servais most trusted advisers.

UWMed: Cognitive test is poor predictor of athletes’ concussion

Sunday, June 23, 2024

Drs. Kimberly Harmon and John O'Kane (left) monitor players' health at a UW Huskies football game. UW Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine

Part of the NCAA’s standardized concussion evaluation failed to distinguish athletes who were actually injured, a study shows.

When college athletes are evaluated for a possible concussion, the diagnosis is based on an athletic trainer or team physician’s assessment of three things: the player’s symptoms, physical balance and cognitive skills.

Research published today suggests that almost half of athletes who are ultimately diagnosed with a concussion will test normally on the recommended cognitive-skills assessment.

“If you don’t do well on the cognitive exam, it suggests you have a concussion. But many people who are concussed do fine on the exam,” said Dr. Kimberly Harmon, the study’s lead author. She is a professor of family medicine and section head of sports medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

The findings appear in JAMA Network Open. More information on their news release

Shorecrest athletes compete at WA State Combined Event Championships

Thursday, June 20, 2024

Shorecrest students Lucia Shadduck and Thomas Linville at Combined Event Championships
Friday, May 31, 2024. Photo by Steve Wangen

A week after the WIAA track and field season wrapped up with the state finals in Tacoma, Shorecrest students Lucia Shadduck (sophomore) and Thomas Linville (senior) competed at the Washington State Combined Event Championships Meet held at Lake Stevens High School.

Shadduck placed 19th in the field of 32 female athletes from around the state in the heptathlon (women’s event comprising seven track and field events). Linville, who competed in the decathlon (men’s event comprising ten events), placed 12th out of 32 athletes.

Although the heptathlon/decathlon meet is not an official WIAA sanctioned event (and therefore athletes did not wear their school track uniforms), both athletes were recommended by their Shorecrest track coach, Brandon Christenson to apply to participate in this year’s competition.

“The ‘Combined Event’ for our athletes is a tremendous opportunity for multi-faceted athletes to continue with their training and competitions after the high school season concludes,” said Coach Christenson.
“Many of the athletes are highly capable in several events but are limited during their seasons. This gives them an opportunity to showcase their talents and explore different disciplines at a very high level of competition. Both Thomas and Lucia were stellar track athletes this past season, and this just exemplifies how talented they are!”

Student athletes who entered to compete in the heptathlon and decathlon were chosen to participate based on scores from past track and field competitions as recorded on Athletic.net. Organizers of the event limited the number of entries to the state’s top multi event athletes. Athletes from all state level classifications, from 4A on down, competed together and against one another at this event.

On Friday the meet started off with an unusual twist when the first two races, boys 100m and girls 100m hurdles, were both run in the opposite direction on the straightaway of the track to catch a slight tail wind. From there the girls moved to the high jump and boys to the long jump and all other events ran as usual.

Shorecrest Jumps Coach Juli van Pelt and Assistant Coach Stephen Wangen attended both days of the meet to coach Shadduck and Linville in high jumps and long jumps as well as support the two athletes in all other events.

“Lucia and Thomas took risks and persevered through difficult challenges as they completed their first heptathlon and decathlon,” commented Juli van Pelt.
“The multi-events require athletes to perform at a high level and to change focus from each event. I was very proud of their success at navigating all the new skills, the transitions between events, and how they embraced the experience.”

Shorecrest Pole Vault Coach Paul Cole was in attendance on Saturday to coach Thomas Linville in the pole vault, in which he exceeded all expectations with a personal best vault of 10’ 6”. (Linville vaulted a total of 17 times before finally dropping out of the vaulting competition!)

Lucia Shadduck posted a personal record at the meet Saturday in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:39.6. Shadduck had very strong showings this past season in both sprints (individual and relays) as well as the long jump, but she had never run a hurdle race or thrown a javelin competitively prior this competition, so the experience of the heptathlon was a steep learning curve for this sophomore athlete.

In addition to track, Shadduck is also a member of the Shorecrest cheer team and an active participant in DECA.

“The atmosphere at this meet was very relaxed,” said Shadduck. “Usually at high school meets I’m rushing to get to my different events, here, all the athletes were doing the same thing at the same time and the meet felt so catered to us athletes and was really enjoyable!”

Thomas Linville had an exceptional day a the decathlon having PRed in the 100m (11.44), long jump (19' 10.75"), pole vault (10' 6"), and javelin (136' 5"), all on his way to setting the Shorecrest High School record in the decathlon with a total score of 5167.

The week before Linville placed 15th in the triple jump at the State Track and Field Finals. Later this month Linville is competing at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in the emerging elite division for triple jump.

Linville will be attending the University of Washington in the fall, where he plans to major in electrical and computer engineering.

When he's not running, jumping, or throwing, Thomas keeps busy with VEX Robotics, TSA (Technology Student Association), and playing the cello. Thomas Linville was one of two graduating Shorecrest seniors to receive the Lane Loland Award for outstanding academic and athletic achievement.

Overall, the Washington State Combined Event Championships was a well-organized and well-run event. Participants and spectators alike enjoyed the unique nature of the meet with only two events happening at any given time, one for the boys and one for the girls. And everyone appreciated the fact that the rain mostly held off until Sunday!

Heptathlon

This is the women’s ultimate all-round athletic test, a seven-event contest covering a range of events across a two-day program. The first day consists of (in order): 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m. Day two comprises: long jump, javelin and 800m.

Decathlon

An all-round men’s athletics test, the 10-event contest covers the whole range of athletics disciplines spread over two days. The first day consists of (in order): 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m. The second day’s events: 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m.

In both the heptathlon and decathlon competitors earn points for their performance in each discipline and the overall winner is the athlete who scores the most points.

Registration costs are $40 for Singles players and $60 for Doubles and Mixed Doubles teams, with proceeds going to the Snohomish High School tennis programs. Last year, a record 185 players from high schools stretching from Seattle to Bellingham battled it out on the courts.

Tournament Director Kraig Norris has watched this tournament continue to grow, since its beginnings in 2015.

“The real explosion in participation began after the Pandemic. Many area clubs have simply stopped offering Junior USTA tournaments, and players are desperate for opportunities to compete. Area high school coaches realized that we were providing a chance for their players to compete and get better, and many have actively promoted our tournament.”

Now, with clubs like Platinum Sponsor Columbia -Silver Lake, Silver Sponsor Tennis Center Sand Point, and other clubs promoting the tournament, the Summer Smash is one of the largest non-USTA tournaments in the state.

Registration deadline for the Summer Smash is July 9th; players interested in participating can go to snohomishsummersmash.com for more information.

The trip was a wonderful showcase of the talent from across the State as well as from our community. On extremely windy and sometimes sprinkling (story of the season) days the athletes competed with the best from around the state.

The boys' season and qualifying tournaments were held last Fall in October 2023. They had been training and preparing through Winter and early Spring. Coach Arnie Moreno felt that they had worked hard to prepare and were ready to compete at state. All five boys return to next Fall's team.

Coach Moreno told each player on both teams to be proud of their accomplishment and not only meet the challenge but enjoy every moment, win or lose.
He reminded them that there are many players on their team and other teams that would trade places with them for the opportunity to be competing at high level at state. In the tournament, they are the top 16 players and doubles teams in the state 3A division.

The first day's match started with Garibay and Okamura losing a hard fought, loser out match, to a very tough Lakeside team. They played their best and enjoyed playing against a very good level of competition.

In singles, Gettmann, Lin and Drake all won their first-round matches. The doubles boys' teams, Kosten and Gordon, Sheffield and Boyd won their first round with great teamwork and shot making. Brittle and Mignogna lost a very close three set match to a Tumwater team, but were in double elimination, and still in the tournament. They lost their next match that had many close points and games, and were out of the tournament.

The boys' team surprised many opponents and won hard fought matches to win a second match on the Saturday round of medals matches. After losing hard fought quarterfinal matches, they all placed. Drake 7th, Kosten and Gordon 8th and Sheffield and Boyd 7th.

Rylie Gettman -8 and Emily Lin -7

Gettman and Lin also lost very close quarterfinal matches but won their next matches to advance to earn medals, Lin 7th and Gettmann 8th. This was the second straight year that each earned an award to be in the top eight players in the state 3A.

After many close matches and amazing tennis play, the Shorewood boys won the 4th in State Team trophy and the girls placed 5th.

Coach Moreno and Shorewood JV Coach JT Mashman, who assisted with the coaching, were very proud of the teams' high level of play, their outstanding sportsmanship and support for each other.
