The Seattle Times: An unusual race in Shoreline sends runners in circles

Sunday, March 17, 2024

Route for the Boeing Creek Trail Run

On a drizzly, windy Saturday morning in Shoreline, 40 bundled-up runners crossed the start line of a slightly unusual race. Grand Douglas fir trees loomed over the participants as they began their day puffing up a trail at Shoreview Park. For the next two, four or six hours, they would run in circles.

The Seattle Times published a feature on the Boeing Creek Crawl, held in Shoreview Park on March 9, 2024. See our previous story here and The Times story here.

Shorewood grad singled out for Water Polo honor

Elle Fredrickson is a 2020 graduate of Shorewood High School who now attends Santa Clara University in California and plays water polo.

In addition to playing water polo in college, she has played since she was 8 years old at the Innis Arden Swim Club, for a club team based out of Tacoma, and for Shorewood High School.

This week Elle was listed as one of only 22 collegiate women’s water polo players in the entire country to be on the Cutino Award watch list. This is the equivalent of being on the Heisman watch for football.

Named after the late Hall of Fame coach Peter J. Cutino, this watch list was established in 2022 to promote collegiate water polo and honor outstanding players across the nation.

This acknowledgment highlights Fredrickson's exceptional skills and her significant impact on collegiate water polo, both for men's and women's. Selected by coaches, the top 22 athletes are recognized for their outstanding performance.

The senior has recorded 123 career goals with 27 in the young season. Last year, she was featured as the GCC Player of the Week for April 10-16 after she totaled seven goals and five drawn exclusions across three games, including scoring the golden goal winner on the road at Cal State East Bay.

Not only excelling in athletics, Fredrickson also stands out academically. A three-time GCC All-Academic Team award recipient, she has also been named to the 2022 ACWPC All-Academic Team. As she continues to lead both in the pool and in the classroom, Fredrickson shows excellence in collegiate water polo.

SW Girls Golf celebrates sunshine and first win

Thursday, March 14, 2024

l-r Sofina, Maya, Sadie & Ivy. Sofina and Sadie returning players
and Maya and Ivy are new to the team.

It was a beautiful day at Jackson Park Golf Course and the SW Girls Golf competition is underway.

This spring, players from all schools have faced rain, hail, snow, wind and really cold temps, not the typical 'golf weather' we associate with the sport.

We persisted, we are practicing and we are improving, One swing at a time!

We played a good team, and nice girls from Archbishop Murphy. Their #1 player was the medalist for the match and Sofina, Ivy and Sadie rounded out 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishes for our first match.

ALL the girls from BOTH schools played with a lot of heart today. Jackson Park is not an easy course for new golfers. Everyone cheered each other on and it was a good day for players and the coaches.

1A King's team went all the way to the final game in 3A/4A league tournament. Next they go to the State tournament. Photo courtesy King's.

The 8th grade girls feeder team from 1A King’s, from Shoreline, who play in the 3A/4A WesCo League, went on a tear in the League playoffs making it all the way to the championship game, beating Shorecrest, Stanwood and Snohomish.

They faced Mountlake Terrace in the final. Though they led most of the game, they ultimately lost 29-27 in a nail-biter.

A huge accomplishment for the King’s girls to battle the big schools in WesCo (out of the 17 team WesCo league, King’s is the only 1A school).

They now go on to compete in the State Tournament, March 8-10, 2024 in Spokane, WA and look to win a state championship against the best schools in the state.

King’s High School Cheer Team

February 21, 2024 (SHORELINE, WA) – The King’s High School Cheer Team has returned from the recent USA Spirit Nationals competition in Anaheim with a national championship trophy for 2024.

King’s Cheer was participating in the national competition for the first time in a decade after having qualified recently at a regional competition. The three-day USA Nationals competition, hosted this year at the Anaheim Convention Center, is put on by the United Spirit Association, drawing qualifying high schools from all over the country.

King’s Cheer, under the direction of Head Coach Emilie Tingstad and Assistant Coach Ashley O’Neil, ultimately would take home top honors in the Small Crowdleader Cheer Division and was announced as champions at the competition’s concluding awards ceremony.

Stated Tingstad: “We could not be more honored and grateful to be recognized as National Champions by the United Spirit Association. I am so proud of this team in how they competed and represented King’s High School throughout. It was humbling to feel the support of families that came to support our team. Shorewood High School Girls Golf Team begins practice on February 26, 2024

Shorewood girls are ready for the greens

Shorewood High School Girls soon prepare for 'team golf & get ready to compete'!

Practices begin on February 26, 2024.

We typically think of golf as an 'individual sport', however, it's exciting to witness the energy & team spirit when rooting on a player to sink a putt for their team. No matter if you win or lose.

"Golf is many things, and it's also about the camaraderie of playing a sport they may play for a lifetime.
We call that 'investing in youth sports" and 'growing the game'."

Golf teaches life skills: patience, confidence, honesty, perseverance, respect, courtesy and responsibility. Golf also offers: engagement with others, energizing them to learn something new, while exercising outdoors, and also - enriches their lives.

Shorewood HS has nine girls preparing for the team! It's going to be a fun spring!

Watch us bloom and grow!

Four Shorecrest High School wrestlers competed at the WIAA 3A State Tournament

Tuesday, February 20, 2024

By Sean Rhodes

Four Shorecrest High School wrestlers competed at the WIAA 3A State Tournament at the Tacoma Dome last weekend.

Shorecrest Senior Peter Grimm. Photo by Matt Rapleje

Peter Grimm (SCHS Senior) started wrestling at age 5 for the Wrestling Rhinos Club and wrested the last match of his high school career last Friday. Unfortunately, Grimm had an injured shoulder and wasn't able to make it into the second day of the tournament. Grimm was a four year district/regional finalist and a three time state qualifier during his time wrestling for SCHS (the State Championships were cancelled in 2021 due to Covid protocol). This year Grimm was a WesCo South District champion and placed 3rd at regionals.

SC Junior Kenneth Adams. Photo by Matt Rapleje

Kenneth Adams (SCHS Junior) has been wrestling for Shorecrest since his Freshman year. This is the first year Adams has qualified for the state championships. He was a finalist at the WesCo South District Tournament (2nd place) and placed fourth at regionals. Adams has steadily improved year after year and is excited about being a team leader next year.

SC Junior Carter Nichols. Photo by Matt Rapleje

Carter Nichols (SCHS Junior) started wrestling just last year as a sophomore, but has had meteoric success right out of the gates. Athletic and agile for the 190lb weight class, Nichols was a WesCo South District Champion and placed 4th at regionals this year. This was Nichols' first year competing at state. He had some close matches, but fell just short of moving into the second day of competition at the Dome this year. Carter is also a candidate for team captain next year.

Sophomore Avi Wylen placed 4th at State

Avi Wylen (SCHS Sophomore) has been a long time member of Seattle Wrestling Club and started wrestling for Shorecrest High last year. Wylen was injured at Districts last year as a freshman and wasn't able to compete at regionals.

Determined to make up for that this year, Wylen placed 3rd at WesCo South Districts and 3rd at Regionals. Typically, unless you are a top seed (regional champion or a runner up), you don't make it into the second day of the state championships as a middle weight sophomore.

However, Wylen proved the skeptics wrong and not only made it into day two, but pushed all the way into the placing rounds! Wylen is the second sophomore in Shorecrest High School Wrestling history to place 4th at state.

With a solid core of state seasoned wrestlers returning to the program next year and some promising young talent entering the room from Kellogg Middle School, Coach Bryan Officer reports that the future looks bright for Shorecrest Wrestling.

Shorewood Girls Wrestling continued their winning ways at Mat Classic XXXV this weekend as three girls finished in the top 5. The Stormray girls finished in 9th place overall. Sophomores Finley Houck and Abi Chishungu placed 3rd at 110 and 190 lbs respectively. Junior Libby Norton placed 5th at 105 lbs.

After losing to the returning state champion and the regional champion, Libby Norton came back to take 5th place overall. Photo by Jeremy Tantrum.

The path to the podium included a match with the eventual champion for each wrestler. Norton faced 2x defending state champion Libby Roberts in the semi-finals. The loss forced Norton into the consolation bracket where she dropped a match against her regional finals opponent Rebecca Serrati, but came back in her medal match to take 5th place over Born of Curtis.

Houck’s first challenging match came in the quarterfinal where she faced returning state champion, undefeated Ashley Naranjo of Moses Lake. Houck successfully fended off a pin and even scored on Naranjo, losing in a major decision 11-2. Houck then stormed back winning 4 in a row to take 3rd place. Houck improved her finish over last year’s Mat Classic, where she placed 5th.

Abi Chishungu lost to the 1st place winner, then won her next two matches to finish 3rd.

Abi Chishungu won her first two matches and then faced off with Tru Willis of Silas. Chishungu battled hard but was eventually pinned in the 3rd period by Willis, who ended the night in 1st place. Chishungu then won her next two matches to finish in 3rd place. Chishungu’s improvement over this season was clear as she jumped from a 7th place last year.

Junior Izzy Crave logged five team points for the Stormrays, winning two and losing two, ending a great season one win short of the medal rounds.

Senior Mak Kanzler, who attends King’s High School, qualified for his second state tournament as a second year wrestler. Mak won 3 matches, but lost his second just shy of the medal rounds.

“I am super proud of my wrestlers. I am very grateful to be coaching such a resilient and fun group of kids. I look forward to next season. We want to be in that trophy hunt for a top 4 team finish,” said Stormray head coach Derek Norton.

The WIAA State Cheerleading competition was held at Battle Ground High School on February 2nd and 3rd, 2024.

This is only the 2nd year that Shorewood Cheer has competed in any state cheer competition. The 21 Shorewood cheerleaders competed against talented teams from across the state who have been going to and training for the state event for many years.

At the State competition, Shorewood’s Traditional routine placed 5th, and Game Day routine placed 8th.

"It has been amazing to watch Cheer elevate to an elite competitive team. Coach Sturm continues to raise expectations to meet the level of athletes that participate in cheer and hope to qualify for State year after year. This group of athletes are some of the best in the school!" exclaimed Joann Fukuma, the athletic director at Shorewood.

The Shorewood Cheer coach, Brianne Sturm, has been phenomenal in giving the cheerleaders the skills and confidence to “BELIEVE” in themselves and remember that “WE CAN DO IT!”

There have been many challenges along the way, yet these girls have shown perseverance, hard work, and grace in the process.

Equally important, these Shorewood cheerleaders have excelled in the classroom and have shown deep dedication to service to the community, including, the Great Strides Breast Cancer walk, Syre Carnival and Elementary Cheer Day Camp with over 285 participants.

“Shorewood cheer has a history of creating strong, confident athletes who positively impact the communities they are a part of. They provide a great representation of Shorewood around the state,” shared senior Amelia Uran, one of the captains of the SW Squad.

This special team of athletes has positively changed the dynamic of the school with their passion for both the sport of cheerleading and Shorewood Athletics. The hard work that has gone into competition has brought pride to the school.

The shared school spirit that they encourage in students, athletes, and each other, is palpable to all faculty, staff, students and parents.
