Seattle sports fans can score a hat trick on travel time, parking, and gas by taking Sound Transit’s popular Sounder trains to the NHL Winter Classic at T-Mobile Park, featuring the Seattle Kraken hosting the Las Vegas Golden Knights, on New Year’s Day 2024.

Special Sounder service is in addition to New Year’s Day Link light rail, ST Express, and King County Metro service to and from Lumen Field.

The special service will be available Monday, January 1, 2024 for the 12:00pm faceoff of the NHL Winter Classic.

The inbound N Line train from Snohomish County departs Everett at 9:45am with stops in Mukilteo and Edmonds, arriving at King Street Station at 10:44am.

The return train for the N Line in the direction of Everett departs King Street Station approximately 45 minutes after the end of the game.

An online schedule of the Sounder trains to NHL Winter Classic are available here

More holiday schedule information is available here Link light rail runs every 10 minutes on New Year’s Day and serves 19 stations including Northgate, Roosevelt, University District, University of Washington, Capitol Hill, downtown Seattle, and SODO. Many ST Express and King County Metro buses also drop off passengers near the stadium. Link and ST Express bus schedules are available here. King County Metro bus schedules can be found here.

Regular fares apply for all Sound Transit services. Rail riders can avoid the post-game ticket vending machine lines by purchasing a Day Pass at their originating station. One-way tickets and Day Passes can also be purchased with the Transit GO Ticket app.

ORCA works on trains, buses, and ferries throughout the region. More information is available here.

Thursday’s team score doesn’t tell the whole story of the dual meet at Edmonds Woodway.

The box score shows a final score of EW 48 and SW 36. But, in matches wrestled, SW pinned 6 Edmonds Woodway opponents, while the Warriors managed only 4 wins.

Forfeits can really swing the final score in a wrestling match.

Juniors Libby Norton, Aly Fellores, and Izzy Crave all won in first round pins, as did freshman Abi Chishungu

Sophomores Ellie Van Horn and Finley Houck both pinned their opponents in the 2nd period.

Several Stormray ladies had their first dual meet matches of the year, including Amelia LaClergue, Sarah Norton, and Natalia Pittman

The Stormray ladies will be adding another wrestler in the next week or so to help round out their lineup. Next week the ladies will face some tough opposition as they head to Lake Stevens for a double dual on Wednesday.

First the Stormrays took on Kamiak starting at 138 lbs.

The team headed into the second match of the double dual ready for another win. Again it was a match with lots of pins, most by Shorewood.

The match began with Rock Harris at 144 lbs. Harris and Sky Klein won with back to back pins. Then Getchell and SW traded pins with a win by Oli Dalan, Mak Kanzler, at 165 and 190.

Once the Stormrays got back to the lighter weights, it was four straight pins for SW. Freshmen Finn Greenleaf, Emiliano Olivera, and Melyk Valencia as well as Eli Jeppsen, a sophomore, helped to clinch the deal for the Stormrays.

The final win came as the match ended right back where the night started, with Masa Taura and another pin for the Stormrays.

Final score: Shorewood 54 Marysville Getchell 27.

The Shorewood Junior Varsity squad also had their own dual against Kamiak and came out on top as well.

Shorecrest wrestling season opens with a double dual meet

Saturday, December 2, 2023

Senior Team Captains Peter Grimm and Kaiju Fergerson
Story and photos by Sean Rhodes

The Shorecrest High School Highlanders kicked off their wrestling season November 30, 2023 with a double dual meet against the Everett Seagulls and the Cascade Bruins.

Still only two weeks into the season, about half of the Scots wrestling team was still not eligible for this contest.

However, the wrestlers who were able to compete proved highly capable.

The action started off nicely for the Scots at the 144lb weight class with junior Kenneth Adams out-muscling the Gulls' Jack Franklin for 3 team points.

However, from there it was a lopsided exchange, with Everett picking up 30 points in pins and 24 team points in uncontested forfeits.

The forfeit advantage for Everett included a medical forfeit when senior captain Kaiju Fergerson couldn't finish the 3rd round, despite a 10 point lead.

Despite some great performances by senior captain Peter Grimm (1st round pin), junior Carter Nichols (1st round pin), and sophomore Avi Wylen (3rd round pin) the team point advantage was too great to overcome for the Scots.

Kenneth Adams, Junior, out muscling the
Gulls' Jack Franklin for 3 team points
Final Score: Everett - 54, Shorecrest 27

144—Kenneth Adams Jr (SC) def. Jack Franklin (EVT) 6-2;

132—Robert Thorne (EVT) won by Injury default over Kaiju Fergerson (SC)
138—Avi Wylen (SC) pinned Darey Pestana (EVT) 3:14

Lath Salem, Freshman pinned his opponent
After getting a serving of humble pie from the Seagulls, the Scots woke up for their dual against Cascade.

They bumped a few of their junior varsity wrestlers up into the varsity slots to fill the gaps in the line up.

The last minute change proved valuable, with some newly minted wrestlers notching their first ever wins in a varsity match.

This included 126lb Freshman Laith Salem, who pinned his opponent with a double arm bar in the first round!

Another notable first time varsity win was by 157lb sophomore Oskar Bohne. Bohne is not only new to Shorecrest High School and the sport of wrestling, he is also new to the United States of America. He is a foreign exchange student from Germany living with another SCHS wrestler and his family this year. Welcome to America Oskar!

Carter Nichols, Junior
This time around, the Scots only gave up 3 forfeits and picked up 3 of our own.

They also picked up 24 team points in pins thanks to performances by Bohne, Grimm, Salem and Adams

Also contributing to the team point tally was 215lb Carter Nichols with a major decision (4 team points) against Cascades' Fedhi A-Mosawi.

Final Score: Shorecrest 46 - Cascade 33

150—Mario Toledo-Hernandez (C) won by forfeit;
157—Oskar Bohne (SC) pinned Ethan Tran (C) 5:12;
165—Peter Grimm (SC) pinned Matthew Barclay (C) 1:11;

After graduating from King’s in 2017, Kispert went on to a stellar four-year career across the state at Gonzaga University in Spokane.

During his senior season in 2020-2021, Kispert was both a preseason and end-of-season selection to the Associated Press All-American First Team, recognizing the five best players in the country.
He would go on to lead Gonzaga to the national championship game and a 31-1 overall record while capturing the Julius Erving Award as the nation’s top small forward.

Kispert is currently in his third season with the Washington Wizards after having been selected as the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Following the December 20 ceremony and game at King’s, Kispert will be back in action the following night when the Portland Trail Blazers host the Wizards at the Moda Center.

Stated Kispert: “When King’s reached out about this night, I was really excited. It’s going to be great to go back to my school, as I still have a lot of really good friends and people that I consider family on the coaching staff that work at King’s. I can’t wait to get back to see everybody.”

Stated King’s High School Director of Athletics, David Gerig:
“On behalf of the King’s community, we could not be more excited to welcome Corey back for ‘24Ever a Knight.’ He was an incredible student athlete, and an even better person throughout his many years at King’s.

"We are looking forward to a special evening on December 20 to honor Corey and his teammates on two state championship teams. Corey’s #24 jersey will hang prominently in our gym, where it will be able to inspire countless other student athletes in the future.”

Scots invoke Cinderella in Magical Journey to State 3A Soccer Final

By all measures, Shorecrest had achieved much by coming second in WesCo 3A, and runner-up in District 1. They also qualified for State with an RPI of 11, and seeded #9 in the tournament.

In the State Tournament eighth-final, they faced Peninsula Seahawks of the SSC 3A who were seeded #8, and District 3/4 runner-up.

In a tight, close game of evenly-matched teams, Scots managed to score the singular goal to advance to the quarter-final, 1-0. There, they were to face the defending State Champions Bellevue Wolverines of KingCo 3A, seeded #1, and District 2 co-champions, who had also knocked out Shorecrest in last year’s semi-final.

Surely, the clock would strike midnight and the plucky underdogs would carry their bedraggled pumpkin back to the scullery. Except that Cinderella was not yet ready to leave the ball, and proceeded to use their glassy cleats to kick the Wolverines off the dance floor, 2-1.

Shorecrest had improbably reached the semi-finals again, to face perennial powerhouse Lakeside Lions of Metro 3A, seeded #4, and third in District 2.

They were one step away from the final, in their quest for the prized chalice, and state soccer supremacy.

The Scots were nearly mauled, but as if protected by a fairy godmother, they conjured up the frightful specter of penalty kicks (5-4), and summoned it to tame the Lions into submission, 2-1.

They were one win away from achieving what was previously done by their predecessors 30 years ago, in 1993. And this time, they only had to face the Roosevelt Roughriders of Metro 3A, seeded #14, who squeaked through District 2 bi-league playoffs.

Instead of being the dark horse, they were favored, surely now, the Team of Destiny in their Finals crusade at Sparks Stadium.

Little did they know that there was another longshot Cinderella on their own mission of redemption, Roosevelt, who had lost in last year’s final (to Bellevue). And this time, the Roughriders were not to be denied, taking a commanding 0-3 lead, but the Scots willed one last flicker of hope to cut the deficit to 1-3. Roosevelt did not flinch, did not waver, did not retreat, this Saturday night in Puyallup, to ruthlessly apply the final strike to vanquish valiant Shorecrest 1-4.

Last year, Scots had to be content with fourth place, this year they have finished second. What will happen next year?

We recognize and salute the departing Shorecrest senior players:

Young Scots coach a home grown product

Friday, November 17, 2023

This is just one of innumerable stories that could be written about members of our community.

If you enjoy this sort of story, write one yourself. Find somebody in our community who’s making a difference and shine a spotlight on them. There’s enough wretched news these days - let’s find some good news to brighten our day.

Malcolm Rosier-Butler
Shorecrest varsity girls hoops coach

Tryouts for the Shorecrest Girls Basketball team began this week, and for the for the second year they’ll be coached by Malcolm Rosier-Butler. At 23, he is the youngest varsity girls hoops coach in the State. Last year, with a young roster, his team finished with a .500 record at 10-10.

Star player at Shorecrest in 2016
Rosier-Butler graduated from Shorecrest in 2017, and was a star player for the team that took second place in the 2016 State Tournament.

Scots’ Athletic Director Alan Bruns says this:

“As a Shorecrest alum, Malcolm has come into this job with strong ties to our spirit and culture. He bleeds Green and Gold.
"The program has been invigorated by his enthusiasm and passion for coaching basketball. He focuses on teaching, execution, and motivation, knowing that positive outcomes with be the end result.”

Malcolm in 2016
Malcolm was born and raised in Shoreline, and attended Shoreline Children’s Center, Briarcrest, Kellogg and Shorecrest.

He played one year of college basketball before deciding to focus on academics, graduating in 2021 with a BA in Community Psychology from University of Washington Bothell.

He was one of the first student leaders to be a part of Shoreline Sports Foundation, of which he is now the Executive Director. Malcolm also works as mentor with M.U.S.T. - Mentoring Students and Teens

Coach
His story is a classic example of ‘local young man makes good,’ and as is often the case with successful people, there are many who helped along the way.

Malcolm attributes his success to the community that raised and supported him. Joe Robinson at Shoreline Children's Center in preschool got his education off on the right foot.

Mrs. Dorn and his Japanese teacher (Sensei Toby) in middle school encouraged him to learn Japanese.

Frank Workman, his first banker, helped Malcolm learn the importance of keeping track of, and saving, money.

Neighbors hired Malcolm to mow lawns, chop wood and clean gutters when he was a young teenager. Many coaches, and his mentor Keith Nelson, all helped shape and build his character.

His family could not have done it alone without the help from the entire community.

Shoreline can be proud to call him one of their own.
