Annual Rotary Cup Shorewood - Shorecrest football game Friday, October 20, 2023

Monday, October 16, 2023

Shorewood won the 2022 Cup
LFP Rotarian Allen Merry is holding the cup.

The 2023 Rotary Cup Football Game between Shorewood HS and Shorecrest HS is scheduled for Friday, October 20, 2023.

This crosstown rivalry has a long history; this will be the 45th Annual Rotary Cup.

Tradition is that at the end of the game, members of Lake Forest Park Rotary and Shoreline Rotary take the Rotary Banner out on the field and the winning team gets behind the banner for a photo op.

The photo is from last year’s event when the Shorewood Stormrays (renamed from the Thunderbirds in 2021) won the game against the Shorecrest Scots, 22-7.

They were ecstatic, probably because they had lost the previous eight years in a row.

It should be noted that Shoreline Rotary will be inducting Rob Petschl, the Shorewood varsity head football coach, on October 18th at our next in-person / hybrid meeting.

The 2023 Rotary Cup Game:
  • Where: Shoreline Stadium, 400 NE 185th Street, Shoreline, WA 98155. The stadium is just to the west of I-5 on NE 185th Street, immediately adjacent to the Shoreline School District Headquarters and Conference Center.
  • When: 5:30pm gates open, 7:00pm game time.
  • How Much: Adult admission is $7.00, Seniors and Children $5.00.

Correction: Rob Petschl is the Shorewood varsity head football coach. The Shoreline Schools Athletic Director is Don Dalziel.

The King County Council and the King County Executive Dow Constantine proclaimed the week of October 2-9, 2023, as MEGAN RAPINOE WEEK in King County, in recognition of her incredibly decorated career, unfailing advocacy, and contribution to soccer. #RapinoeReigns

Soccer star Megan Rapinoe with U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal

U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal issued a statement:

It was a total honor to watch the incredible @mrapinoe play her last game with @olreign

She is not only one of the best soccer players of all time and a superstar on the field, she utilized that star power to advocate for things that were courageous, powerful and just.

From her immediate solidarity with Colin Kaepernick around Black Lives Matter, to her powerful advocacy for equal pay to her clear embrace of LGBTQ rights, she grew her star power in every single arena.

She changed the way that not only little girls could see themselves in soccer, but she also showed everyone what it looks like to be who you are and to fight for the things you believe in.

Thank you, Megan! It has been an honor to have you as a constituent and I will always be your fan! We love you and we are #foreverrapinoe

Sports Desk: Shorecrest and Shorewood girls soccer teams off to flying starts

Friday, September 22, 2023

Shorecrest in action
Local high school soccer fans have been treating themselves to two teams playing at the highest level in the state.

About a third of the way into the season, Shorecrest and Shorewood’s girls soccer teams have picked up where they left off last season.

The Scots at 5-0, the Stormrays 5-1, the only blemish in their schedule being a season-opening loss to last year’s 3A State Champions, Bellevue.

In fact, it was Bellevue that first knocked out the Stormrays last year in the quarter-finals, then the Scots in the State semi-finals.

The Stormrays are coached by Brooke Pingery, her second year at the SW helm. Mindy Dalziel, the dean of WESCO soccer coaches, has been roaming the sidelines seemingly forever - this is her 24th year with SC.

Great players abound for both teams, too numerous to mention.

The regular season finale finds the two rivals squaring off against each other on Monday, October 23, 2023. Circle your calendars.

Local youth soccer coaches would be well advised to forego at least one weeknight practice and bring their teams (boys and girls) to Shoreline Stadium. Youngsters will get an up-close view of concepts their coaches are trying to instill….. spacing, passing, dribbling, and verbally communicating with each other.

It’s a certainty that the girls they’ll see playing did the same when they were playing for Shorelake or Hillwood.

Click these links for team schedules.
