25th Annual Rampathon®: Now accepting free mobility ramp applications for families struggling with mobility

Monday, February 19, 2018

Irons Brothers construction crew volunteer
at the 2017 Rampathon

The Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties (MBAKS), through its Rampathon® program, is now accepting applications for free wheelchair access ramps for families struggling with mobility within their home and from nonprofit organizations whose clients or residents struggle with mobility.

We are looking to make our 25th year the biggest Rampathon event EVER!

For 25 years, MBAKS members and community volunteers head to home sites throughout King and Snohomish counties to build ramps during the month of May, for free, because our neighbors in need deserve the same freedoms we have.

The crew from Ashworth Homes builds a
Shoreline ramp during the 2017 Rampathon

MBAKS is proud to help local veterans, children in need, and elderly community members become more mobile and independent.

Rampathon is about helping people and families with mobility issues. Our and our members’ goal is to positively change lives.

Although Rampathon doesn’t occur until May, we are accepting applications from families and organizations in King and Snohomish counties through March 1.

We want to get the word out and help more families who are struggling with mobility.

Inclucity – Actions towards more inclusion

Tuesday, September 5, 2017

PROVAIL, one of the Washington state’s largest organizations serving people with disabilities, will hold its second annual Inclucity event at Seattle Center's McCaw Hall on Thursday, October 5, 2017.

This evening event aims to bring together the Puget Sound community to highlight individuals and organizations that have been successful in improving inclusion for people with disabilities.

Many local organizations will be present, providing interactive vendor displays to showcase their efforts towards creating more inclusion and accessibility, including:
  • Special Olympics Washington
  • Invacare
  • Easterseals Washington
  • Makers Making Change
  • Pacific Continental Bank
In addition to vendor booths, key figures in the disability sector will be speakers, discussing how they experience inclusion in our city and what they are doing to address the lack of inclusion and accessibility.

These “Champions of Inclusion” include:
  • Barry Long, President of Talk and Roll Enterprises
  • Mike Ronan, President of the Board for Special Olympics Washington
  • Kristin Adams, Author of The Chicken Who Saved Us

Q13 Fox News Anchor Matt Lorch is excited to be emceeing the event.
“As the parent of a child with physical and intellectual disabilities, I understand creating opportunities for those with developmental challenges starts with better knowledge, access, and understanding. Inclucity is a movement to do just that,” Lorch says.

PROVAIL encourages individuals of all backgrounds to attend, including individuals who are interested in learning more about the disability sector, but may not have a connection to it.

The event will also give attendees the chance to learn how to get involved in breaking down the barriers to create more inclusion for people with disabilities.

More information about attending Inclucity, becoming a booth vendor or about PROVAIL here.

Shoreline student to participate in DO-IT Scholars Summer Study program

Friday, July 14, 2017

Director, Dr. Sheryl Burgstahler with DO-IT students
Shoreline resident Ryan Hribernick will be returning for his second year in the 2017 DO-IT Scholars Program.

About forty-five college-bound high school students with disabilities will come together on the University of Washington (UW) Seattle campus to participate in the annual DO-IT Scholars Summer Study program.

DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) is funded by the state of Washington, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education. Other generous donors include the Boeing Company, Microsoft, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and the U.S. Department of Labor.

Beginning July 18th, new DO-IT Scholars will spend ten days living on campus, participating in an intensive program designed to promote college and career success. The students will learn about challenging careers in fields such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Returning second year Scholars will stay on campus for one week starting July 22nd.

“DO-IT Scholars learn about college life by living in a dorm, getting along with a roommate, participating in academic classes, preparing for challenging careers, and having fun,” explains Dr. Sheryl Burgstahler, founder and director of DO-IT.
“Year-round, they communicate via the Internet with their new friends and are mentored by successful adults with disabilities. Year after year, they connect through DO-IT activities and are supported as they transition to college and careers. Many successful DO-IT Scholars continue in the program as mentors to younger participants.”

Second and third year students will once again prepare for academic programs and careers while mentoring first year students. They also complete challenging projects during their stay on campus. This year, they will work on projects in fields such as neurobiology and robotics.

DO-IT Scholars targets high school sophomores and juniors with disabilities in Washington State who are interested in pursuing higher education.

King's High School Robotics to present at national conference in Houston Apr 21

Robotics program for students with and without special needs

FRC Team 4911 CyberKnights, a robotics team from King’s High School, is proud to announce they will be leading a conference on Special Olympics Unified Robotics at the FIRST Robotics World Championships in Houston, Texas.

This session will introduce Special Olympics Unified Robotics, a robotics program for students with and without special needs, to FIRST Robotics teams from around the world. The session will demonstrate how Unified Robotics helps bridge the achievement gap by empowering students with special needs to participate in robotics, to be involved in a STEM program, and to develop important life skills including self-confidence, communication and leadership.

Special Olympics Unified Robotics was started by a member of the CyberKnights who was inspired by her sister with autism. She recognized that students with special needs often have constrained access to engineering and programming classes because of staff support requirements and significant modifications. Unified Robotics is an unprecedented accepting and hands-on way to introduce these students to STEM concepts.

“By offering this club to a diverse population of students, we can broaden their interests and experiences in STEM-related activities, as well as teach them basic life and job skills that will open more doors in their futures,” said Noelle Foster, CyberKnights mentor.
“In addition to introducing programming and engineering concepts to a population of students not typically engaged in these areas, Unified Robotics is an educational and leadership experience for every student involved.”

Conference attendees will learn:

•       The importance of Unified Robotics
•       How to start a Unified Robotics program at their school
•       How to fund the program
•       Marketing and public relationships
•       Recruiting tips
•       The personal impact it has made on past participants

“Our goal is to expand Unified Robotics so that every high school student has access to robotics,” said Mike Thompson, CyberKnights coach and King’s High School teacher.
“We wish to share our experiences and spread awareness of the importance of this program with FIRST Robotics teams everywhere. We will provide support and instruction on how to start this program at other schools. Participants will learn how this program is beneficial and impactful for all members involved.”

The conference will be held in Houston, Texas on Friday, April 21. The session will be led by a panel of students, mentors and coaches impacted by Unified Robotics including Mike Thompson, Noelle Foster and students Jane Yi, Joanne Yi, Laurie Machida, Eneya Kwesele, Madeleine Schwitters, and Eva Lu.
