Fire Safety for people with disabilities

Monday, July 15, 2024

Olympia- National Disability Independence Day is celebrated every year on July 26.

According to the Center for Disease Control, up to one in four people in the United States (U.S.) lives with a disability.

The U.S. Fire Administration indicates 30 percent of the fire deaths that occurred between 2017 to 2019 involved a person with a disability.

Of the 67 fire deaths that occurred in Washington State in 2023, 22 percent were reported as individuals having a disability.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) wants to reduce the risk of fire in every community across the state.

Preparation and prevention can help your family stay safe and unharmed from fire incidents.

Having a familiar and regularly tested evacuation plan that works for all household members is critical.

Here are some suggestions to increase fire preparedness:
  • Have an interconnected smoke alarm system.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly and conduct regular maintenance in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • If you are hearing impaired, install smoke alarms that notify you of danger with flashing lights or vibrating alarms.
  • When possible, sleep on the ground floor.
  • Sleep with bedroom doors closed.
  • Have an escape plan with at least two exit options.
  • Make sure to involve all household members in your escape plan and practice regularly.
  • If you have a service animal, make sure to practice with them as well.
  • Talk to your local fire department about your evacuation plan.

Shakespeare in the Park in Lynnwood offers ASL interpretation

Sunday, July 14, 2024

LYNNWOOD, WA  - For possibly the first time in Puget Sound’s history of hosting summer Shakespeare in the Park, the City of Lynnwood will offer ASL-interpreted performances at Lynndale Amphitheatre.

The live performances in this summer's 2024 lineup that will be ASL interpreted include:
  • Thursday, July 18 (Two Gentlemen of Verona)
  • Thursday, July 25 (Henry VI Parts 2 & 3)
  • Thursday, August 1 (Twelfth Night)
Performance interpreters Malcolm Reed and Jahmeca Osborne are currently undertaking the linguistic challenge of translating the Bard’s scripts alongside a Deaf Director of Artistic Sign Language (DASL).

Lynnwood is proud to partner with GreenStage, Seattle’s oldest outdoor Shakespeare Company, as well as Wooden O, Seattle Shakespeare Company’s summer program, in a collaborative effort to offer a more accessible outdoor theatre experience for Puget Sound’s Deaf and hard of hearing community members. The 2024 Lynnwood Shakespeare in the Park program is sponsored by Alderwood Terrace Rotary.

Sarah Olson, PRCA Deputy Director, has been collaborating with community members to provide better access to the City's outdoor programming for several summers. Sarah believes, “free, outdoor Shakespeare was designed to be accessible to all ages, all abilities, all incomes, in all zip codes. Through collaboration with our city’s deaf residents, this is a key step towards making sure it’s truly accessible for our region’s Deaf and hard of hearing audiences, too.”

This summer, nearly 90 productions of Shakespeare in the Park are scheduled to perform throughout Puget Sound. This includes Wooden O and GreenStage’s touring troupes performing outdoor plays and a weekend-long Seattle Outdoor Theatre Festival.

Providing interpreted shows is a milestone in Lynnwood’s 45-year tradition of hosting community events, cultural arts, and live performances at the Lynndale Amphitheatre, which is nested within the woods of the city’s largest (and second-oldest) park.

The Lynndale Amphitheatre was renovated in 2014 to provide additional seating and remove barriers to become an ADA accessible program area.

For 20 years Friendship Adventures has provided social opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities

Sunday, June 23, 2024

The Hoedown
By Katy Boyd

It started with a lunch out after Special Olympics bowling and has become so much more. Friendship Adventures is a 501c3 organization that helps and supports adults with developmental disabilities.

Maureen Browning, Founder & Director, saw a void in her brother Dean Harrison’s life. He was an adult with Down syndrome. As his interest in sports and Special Olympics started to lessen, his social circle started to shrink.

After high school, many adults with developmental disabilities do not have as much social interaction with their peers. Many live in group homes or with caregivers that don’t have the means to provide social opportunities.

Imagine not being able to meet up with friends and catch up over a cup of coffee or a meal. Imagine sitting at home and only communicating with your family or housemates for months and months at a time.

Halloween party

In 2004, Maureen saw the value in bringing adults with disabilities together in a more social atmosphere and she decided to plan a few events for her brother and his buddies. She started with a bingo night and a small Halloween dance and word spread about these gatherings.

The next game night she planned to host had an overwhelming response and she knew she was on to something. A few months later, Friendship Adventures was formed.

They started with some dances and more game nights and then the calendar evolved into overnight trips, summer camp, bigger events and added some educational activities. They wanted to create social, recreational and educational events and activities that promoted inclusion and confidence while creating lifelong friendships.

Friendship Prom

The Friendship “Prom” was brainstormed and to this day has been their most popular and best attended event, this year taking place on Saturday, June 22nd. They procure formal wear and dress donations, have make-up and hair artists donate their time and supplies and everyone who attends gets to dress up, enjoy a nice dinner and dance the night away.

In addition to their social events, they created educational opportunities for the participants. They started music and drama classes, cooking classes and fitness movement classes, all of which have been very beneficial to the overall health of this special population.

Covid had an extreme impact on this underserved population. As many of their participants struggled with creating or preserving friendships & relationships on their own, the stay-at-home order halted any development in this area.

Many felt disconnected from the outside world and the removal of activities and human interaction removed the connections they had formed at previous events. Maureen felt it was necessary to get back together as soon as possible and with the help of a collaborative team, Friendship Academy and the day program was established.

Yoga and movement classes

The academy continues to host music and drama classes and has added more art classes, yoga, cheerleading and movement classes.

The day program has been a wonderful addition for their participants. It allows them to gather on a more regular basis where they can continue to form bonds with their peers, learn new skills and experience new adventures.

The day program, run by wonderful staff and a plethora of experienced instructors and volunteers, is currently based in Shoreline. They have a daily lesson and take weekly field trips to discover fun and local gems found around the Pacific Northwest. The scheduled programming and classes allow for all abilities.

Everyone is different and every disability is different. There are wheelchair-bound members that wouldn’t typically get to participate in some of the activities they provide like yoga or art, but the skilled and caring instructors modify exercises and lesson plans and support all attendees. Inclusion is in their mission statement; it is their number one priority.

Cooking class

In July, Friendship Adventures will be celebrating 20 years of friendship and events. They will be kicking off their 21st year with a special Anniversary party on August 3rd.

Country music stars James Carothers and Andy Varner from Nashville will be featured at the party and will be playing in celebration of this milestone.

“It has been a whirlwind since our inception in 2004. The bonds and friendships that have been formed are so heartwarming to watch” said Maureen Browning.
“Many of our participants have really found the confidence to interact with others and establish lifelong friendships that go beyond our events. We are friendship matchmakers and activity directors, but most importantly, we are friends.
"We provide a safe place for our participants to gather and socialize without judgement or harassment”

Banchero Friends annual golf tournament to support independent living for developmentally disabled clients

Saturday, August 5, 2023

Annual golf tournament to benefit Banchero Friends
will take place August 30 in Newcastle
On August 30th, Cedar Grove Composting will host their annual golf tournament at China Creek Course at Newcastle to raise funds for Banchero Disability Partners as they continue to provide independent living services for its thirty-six developmentally disabled clients and their families.

Banchero Disability Partners (BDP) has been an integral part of the Shoreline area service providers for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1971.

This annual golf tournament provides an annual opportunity to reacquaint the local community with the supported living services they provide to their constituents.

Since its last tournament, prior to the pandemic, BDP has added nearly a dozen clients and completed a campaign to own and occupy a second set of apartments in the Shoreline area.

The expansion of services to more individuals and their families has brought with it extra demands to hire staff and create new programs.

“Our amazing staff builds the skill sets of our clients so they can live happily, independently, and safely integrated into their local communities. Funding living wages to attract competent staff to support our clients 24/7 is our priority” says Carol Salter, Executive Director of BDP.
“The golf tournament, sponsored by Cedar Grove Composting is a great way for us to work with the community and share the amazing stories we experience every day.”

Nyima (right) and Lisa
Banchero Disability Partners owns and operates two apartment buildings in North Seattle and Shoreline, renting apartments to many individuals they serve, as well as to other low-income neurotypical individuals, migrants, and refugees, serving the greater Shoreline community.

Recently, the City of Shoreline granted them a “Love your Community” grant funding BDP’s annual summer picnic at Paramount School Park on July 23, 2023.

The Community Integration celebration was attended by approximately 100 individuals, including clients and their staff, family/guardians, and members of BDP’s Board of Directors.

Salter acknowledges “Cedar Grove Composting has been our longest and most generous supporter for over forty years. We are proud to be the non-profit organization they have elected as their focus and look forward to their charity event this month.”

The Cedar Grove Composting Golf Tournament benefiting Banchero Disability Partners is August 30th at 11am at the China Creek Golf Course in Newcastle with all proceeds benefiting BDP clients.

Dinner and a small silent auction will follow the tournament and are included in the registration fee. The entry fee is set at $200 for an individual, $750 for a team of four, and an opportunity to advertise your business as a hole sponsor for $1,000.

Pollet bill to increase funding for special education heads to Governor's desk

Sunday, April 23, 2023

Rep. Gerry Pollet
46th LD
OLYMPIA – Students with disabilities and exceptional needs continue to lack equitable access to special education programs and funding in Washington state.

Seeing an “unconscionable” failure to meet the state’s paramount duty to fund basic education for students with disabilities, State Representative Gerry Pollet, D-North Seattle, introduced House Bill 1436, which the House passed on Saturday.

School districts reported that they are spending over $500 million from local school levies this coming year on services for students who have been evaluated to have disabilities and are entitled to services under federal and state laws (referred to as “Individual Education Plans,” or IEPs).

Under HB 1436, as adopted today, and in the new state budget, the Legislature will add $417 million in new support for special education during this biennium and nearly a billion dollars over four years. It increases how much special education funding school districts receive per student up to the new cap, which is increased from 13.5% to 15%.

It further requires a study of the adequacy and efficacy of the special education funding formula. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is required to review data to ensure that there is not a disproportionate identification or under-identification of specific groups of students, and to develop an allocation and cost accounting methodology to ensure equitable funding for special education programs.

The legislation also begins an effort to have the Office of Education Ombuds provide special education ombuds to assist parents, as advocated for by Senate Education Chair Lisa Wellman.

“Washington has a constitutional obligation to fund every child’s education. Disability is not a choice,” said Rep. Pollet.
“Today, we move one step closer to fully supporting all students in our state with a high-quality public education. Looking to the future, more work remains. I am hopeful that the legislature will support future proposals to completely remove this cap because of the disproportional impact on students in our state.”

HB 1436 now heads to the Governor’s desk.

Rep. Gerry Pollet represents the 46th Legislative District in NE Seattle from about NE 45th in the U District to NE 145th on the Seattle/Shoreline boundary.

Gala and Live Auction to support Banchero Disability Partners

Banchero Disability Partners Heart and Soul Gala and Auction

For over 52 years, Banchero Disability Partners has empowered adults with disabilities to realize their potential, achieve their goals, and be active, contributing members of their communities.

They provide community-based support, safe and affordable housing, and case management from 24-hour in-home care to basic medical and financial assistance.

Please consider donating to our gala to be held on April 28, 2023, 5-10pm at Ballard Elks.

Because of your generosity, we are able to help our clients find housing in their own apartments, keep jobs, improve their physical and mental health, and have active social lives.

Your gift gives our clients the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest by funding our health and wellness initiatives, recreational and sporting activities, educational classes, our annual camping trip, and community gatherings for our clients, their families and staff.

But, most importantly, your donation gives us the ability to pay better wages and retain long-term, quality staff resulting in better care of our clients.

Our auction is our biggest fundraiser and brings together our clients and their families, staff, community partners, volunteers, and donors who support and share our values. Our Heart and Soul auction raises over $150,000. 93% of donations received go directly to client services!

Contact Executive Director, Carol Salter at carol@banchero.org with any questions about us, or about the auction. You can learn more and read about our clients and staff at www.banchero.org
