Northbound I-5 lanes closed overnight in Mountlake Terrace Friday through Sunday

Saturday, May 21, 2022

Crews working on the Lynnwood Link Extension closed the northbound lanes of I-5 between SR 104 and 220th Ave SW in Mountlake Terrace (MLT) overnight Friday, May 20, 2022.

They will be closed again on Saturday 11pm to 6:30am.

On Sunday, the northbound lanes will close as early as 11pm and will reopen at 4am the following morning.

For all three nights, the SR 104 eastbound and westbound on-ramps will close at 9pm. Traffic will be detoured and will rejoin I-5 at 220th Street SW. The MLT Flyover south and north ramps will remain closed all weekend.

To minimize impacts to drivers, northbound I-5 traffic will need to follow designated detour routes.

Southbound traffic lanes will remain open.

The closure is necessary for the removal of falsework for span supports. The falsework, which was erected in the fall of 2020, is a temporary steel column system between and outside of the girders used to support the construction of the concrete deck on top of which the light rail trains will travel.

Lynnwood Link will extend light rail into Snohomish County, serving four stations, Shoreline South/148th, Shoreline North/185th, Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood City Center.

Upon its opening, riders will enjoy fast, frequent and reliable service between south Snohomish County and the University of Washington, downtown Seattle, the Eastside, Sea-Tac Airport and more. For more information, please visit https://www.soundtransit.org/system-expansion/lynnwood-link-extension.

New ORCA ticket system rollout continues with new ticket vending machines

Tuesday, May 3, 2022

By Scott Thompson, Sound Transit

As many riders have noticed, crews continue installing new ORCA ticket vending machines (TVM) at stations throughout the system in preparation for the launch of the new ORCA system in May.

The new TVMs will not be online until the new system launch, but Link riders will still be able to use existing TVMs until the new system is fully functional.

This is part of a new ORCA system rolling out region wide to provide easier ways to pay transit fares and manage transit passes.

Upgrading ORCA equipment

Besides the ticket vending machines, crews are also swapping out ORCA card readers for new ones over the coming months.

When the new ORCA system launches in May, you will see these new card readers installed but covered up.

The screens on the new ticket machines will indicate whether they are in service yet.

We’ll also play audio announcements at stations during the replacement process to alert passengers of what to expect.

After the launch, we’ll remove all the original ORCA equipment. We expect to have the system fully upgraded by this summer.

The new ORCA system will give customers more enhancements and features, such as the ability to tap to pay with your phone.
  • Additional improvements include: A mobile app to manage your account and pay your fare
  • The ability to instantly load value and products to your ORCA account
  • More retail locations to buy ORCA cards and add value
  • An improved website (myorca.com) makes it easier to manage your account
But don’t worry, your current ORCA card will still work on the new system and the with the mobile app!

Options like Youth cards, Regional Reduced Fare Permits and ORCA LIFT cards will still be available with the new system.

Sound Transit welcomes concrete strike’s end, encourages continued negotiations toward long-term contracts

Sunday, April 10, 2022

The concrete driver's strike is over, but without resolution. A union representative said they would continue to work for employee retirement benefits, which he indicated was the last sticking point.

Locally, large projects are being readjusted to "dig out of the deep hole" they have been in. The Shoreline projects were able to get a head start when drivers at three companies were authorized to go back to work mid-March.

Statement from Sound Transit

With construction progress now months behind schedule, Sound Transit will work to minimize expected delays to project openings

Sound Transit today welcomed news that the concrete delivery strike impacting projects across King and Snohomish counties will come to an end following the Teamsters’ unconditional offer to return to work while negotiations continue.

"This is great news for resuming work on the largest transit expansion program in the nation," said Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff.
"We thank the Teamsters for this action, and we urge the parties to work collaboratively on a long-term agreement that avoids risks of further disruptions. With months of backlogged concrete deliveries across the region, we all must now work together to dig ourselves out of a deep hole."

With backlogged demand expected to continue impacting deliveries, Sound Transit will continue to assess schedule impacts that the months of project delays, combined with COVID-19 and other impacts, will have on the opening dates of major light rail extensions.

The strike has impacted four major light rail extensions in King and Snohomish counties that under original schedules were expected to add 34 miles to the regional light rail system by the end of 2024.

The four projects include the 14-mile extension of Link to Mercer Island, Bellevue and Redmond’s Overlake area; the 8.5-mile extension to Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood; the 7.8-mile extension to Kent and Federal Way; and the 3.4-mile extension to downtown Redmond.

Sound Transit will do its best to minimize the degree to which the strike and other factors will delay the openings.

"While we cannot erase these delays, we will work to minimize their impact to the greatest degree possible and get these transformative projects open for service to our residents," said Sound Transit Executive Director of Design, Engineering and Construction Management Ron Lewis.

Avoiding any future disruptions to concrete deliveries is critical. To date, the strike has resulted in more than 4,300 missed deliveries. If all those trucks were lined up bumper-to-bumper, they would stretch almost 29 miles, about the distance from Lynnwood to SeaTac Airport.

Inability to move projects forward also caused Sound Transit contractors to lay off approximately 200 people.

New details on the van crash and fire previously reported.

After rolling over the concrete barrier and landing on its side, the van was "well-involved in flames" with the driver and two passengers inside.

The crash happened near where Sound Transit constructions crews were working on the Lynnwood Link light rail project.

Seattle Fire reports that the two adult males were pulled out of the burning vehicle by construction employees prior to SFD's arrival.

We'd like to thank the construction company "Stacy and Witbeck/Kiewit/Hoffman, JV." for their quick life-saving actions! The actions of your employees likely saved their lives.

Sound Transit said: A huge thank you to members of our Lynnwood Link light rail extension contractor team - way to go @StacyWitbeck!

Stacy and Witbeck responded: We are glad everyone is safe and that we could help.

The status of the driver is still unknown.

Brooke Belman named Acting
CEO of Sound Transit
While the Sound Transit Board continues its national search for the agency’s next CEO, it voted unanimously to appoint longtime agency leader Brooke Belman to the role of Acting CEO upon CEO Peter Rogoff’s departure on May 31.

"Sound Transit will not miss a beat as Brooke steps forward to lead during the final phase of our CEO search," said Sound Transit Board Chair Kent Keel, a member of the University Place City Council.

Upon the arrival of a permanent CEO, Belman will return to her current role as the agency’s Chief of Staff. Since joining Sound Transit in 2004, Belman’s leadership roles have included Deputy Executive Director, Land Use Planning and Development; Chief of Staff of the Design Engineering and Construction Management department; and Director of Community Engagement. Belman previously held consultant roles in communications and politics.

"I am honored to serve the Board and our dedicated staff during this transition. There is no shortage of important and exciting work at Sound Transit, and I am thrilled to partner with our leadership to deliver on our promise to the Puget Sound region," said Belman.

A subcommittee of the Sound Transit Board of Directors chaired by Keel is leading the national search for a new CEO to succeed Rogoff. The position is currently advertised, and this spring, the subcommittee is scheduled to identify finalists who will be considered by the full Board.
