Seattle sports fans can save on travel time, parking and gas by taking Sound Transit’s popular Sounder trains to this weekend’s Seahawks game.

Special Sounder service is in addition to regular Link light rail, ST Express and King County Metro service to and from Lumen Field.

The special service will be available Sunday, September 22, 2024 for the 1:05pm Seahawks game against the Dolphins.

The inbound N Line train from Snohomish County departs Everett at 10:45am with stops in Mukilteo and Edmonds, arriving at King Street Station at 11:44am.

The return N Line train for Everett departs King Street Station 45 minutes after the end of the game.

An online schedule of Sounder trains serving Seahawks games is available here.

Link light rail runs every 10 minutes on weekends and serves 23 stations including Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline, Northgate, Roosevelt, University District, University of Washington, Capitol Hill, downtown Seattle, SODO, Beacon Hill, Rainier Valley, Tukwila, SeaTac and Angle Lake.

Link’s Stadium and International District stations are a short walk from the stadium.

Regular fares apply for all Sound Transit services. Rail riders can avoid the post-game ticket vending machine lines by purchasing a Day Pass at their originating station. One-way tickets and Day Passes can also be purchased with the Transit GO Ticket app.

Another way to skip lines at ticket vending machines is by getting an ORCA card. Cards only cost $3 for adults, plus whatever amount a rider chooses to load in the card’s E-purse or the cost of a pass that is good for unlimited transit trips.

ORCA LIFT fares are available for low-income adult passengers. Regional Reduced Fare permit holders are seniors age 65+ and riders with disabilities.

ORCA works on trains, buses and ferries throughout the region. More information available here.

Lynnwood Link stations opened on Friday

Saturday, August 31, 2024

The Shoreline South / 148th station had Welcome to Shoreline painted on the pavement. Children were provided with chalk and invited to add color.

All four of the Lynnwood Link stations opened on Friday, August 30, 2024. It was a hot, sunny day, and the stations were full of people.

I'm not sure how many of them walked to the stations - I suspect a lot did. When I drove by the Lynnwood station at 5:30pm there were pedestrians all along 44th. A group of about 20 were waiting for the walk light to go into the grounds where booths were already crowded.

Mountlake Terrace also had a huge number of booths, filling the large parking lot adjacent to the station and its garage.

SEATTLE (Aug. 29, 2024) – HNTB, a leading infrastructure solutions firm, celebrates a significant milestone in Seattle’s regional transit development with the completion of the Lynnwood Link Extension.

Now called the “1 Line to Lynnwood”, the line connects Northgate Station to Lynnwood Transit Center and marks the first light rail extension to Snohomish County, Washington. The extensive, multi-year project, incorporating four new light rail stations, three parking garages, and 8.5 miles of track, is the culmination of innovative design and a collaborative partnership.

The grand opening ceremonies kick off on Aug. 30, 2024, at 11am with a ribbon cutting at the Lynnwood City Center Station, leading to the inaugural service to and from Lynnwood. At 4pm, members of the public are invited to join the celebration, including activities and entertainment at each of the four new stations, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline North (at 185th), and Shoreline South (at 148th).

HNTB served as project manager on all engineering and architectural aspects of the project design and construction support. HNTB’s innovative approach, including the use of cutting-edge 3-D modeling and delivering design packages early, allowed construction to begin prior to completion of the entire design, enhanced the team collaboration and significantly accelerated the construction timeline.

“This new service marks the first time Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail System has extended into Snohomish County, broadening the range of the entire line and connecting communities across the region,” said Snohomish County Executive and Sound Transit vice chair Dave Somers.

Four passenger stations have been constructed, two in the City of Shoreline, one in Mountlake Terrace and one in Lynnwood, each designed to accommodate high volumes of daily commuters. HNTB is also managing the design of an additional fifth station at 130th Street in Seattle, reflecting its ongoing involvement and adaptability in accommodating changes and expansions to the project scope.

Moein El-Aarag, project manager and group director with HNTB, said “We successfully navigated and fostered partnerships across multiple agencies, including Washington State Department of Transportation and the Cities of Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline and Seattle. Together, we have achieved a significant milestone in enhancing our region’s transit infrastructure.”

Train in the station

Pat Deagen and Claudia Meadows rode the rails on Wednesday in a media advance tour of the new Lynnwood Link stations.

The entire line is called the 1 Line now that the four Lynnwood stations are opening today.

Dow Constantine - King County Executive emphasized the Link connection to job centers and regional stadiums. He commented that the Link will improve livability, and help us meet future growth challenges.

Already, thousands of new housing units have been built near light rail. It will catalyze development and help reduce ambient air pollution.

Dave Somers - Snohomish County Executive recalled 31 years ago was the birth of the organization which grew into Sound Transit and now the Link Extension will open within 48 hours.

Attendees expressed a lot of enthusiasm about being able to ride to a ball game or the Seattle Art Museum or the Symphony and all the city has to offer.

Each station has original artwork, themed and created by known artists.

Pat, who fought for years to get public restrooms at the Aurora Village Transit Center, naturally checked out the facilities at the light rail stations.

The restrooms are designed to be unlocked remotely

There are two locked restrooms at each of the four new stations. I explored the ones at Lynnwood. There is a button to push and I was connected to a security person in downtown Seattle. I said I was at Lynnwood Station and wanted to enter the restroom.

"I could not understand the words from the speaker, but shortly the door was unlocked remotely. This is similar to the two restrooms at Northgate Station. There is also a drinking fountain at Lynnwood. . there was a security person on site to open the restrooms for the crowd, making sure there was no waiting."

Pat noted that the prettiest part of the ride was from north Shoreline to Lynnwood, with its trees and views.

"Between the Shoreline stations the views were often blocked by walls. We did not get to ride from Shoreline south to Northgate. From Northgate south to International District is underground so nothing to see there except for station lights. Then the rail surfaces and is above ground (with the exception of Beacon Hill} to Angle Lake at times rising and falling."

New bus routes start September 14, 2024

Tuesday, August 27, 2024

By Diane Hettrick

I have focused on the Shoreline North / 185th transit station because it borders my Echo Lake neighborhood and because the construction has affected my life for years.

However, when I studied the various Metro proposals for routes to the new 1 Line (aka Lynnwood Link) stations, I realized, somewhat to my shock, that my station is actually Mountlake Terrace.

The new routes, focused on getting people to the transit stations, will start on September 14, 2024.

The 331 bus line starts at Shoreline Community College, heads north through the middle of the Hillwood neighborhood, then east to the Aurora Village Transit Center in the Echo Lake neighborhood. From there it goes north on Meridian, then east to the Mountlake Terrace light rail station.

After that, it heads down Ballinger Way to Lake Forest Park. then Kenmore, and finishes in Bothell. So the 331 serves riders in Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Ballinger, Echo Lake, and Hillwood.

How a light rail train changes direction

Sunday, August 25, 2024

A 1 Link train pulls in to the Lynnwood station.
Or is it coming out of the station?
Screenshot from video by David Carlos

Drone photographer David Carlos was curious about what happens at the end of the transit line, so he followed one of the trains as it went to the end of the 1 Line in Lynnwood.

(Spoiler alert) If you watch the video to the end, you'll see that it is the staff who change directions and the train just goes back the way it came.

Ok, that wasn't a good description. Watch the video.

And note the huge parking structure next to the tracks.

Parking at Transit Stations

Lynnwood Link (now called 1 Link) stations will open on August 30, 2024.

Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline North/185th, Shoreline South/148th all have parking garages which hold up to 500 cars. Shoreline North has 360 spaces, Shoreline South has 500.

Parking at all Sound Transit garages is currently free, however you cannot park overnight for those looking to park their cars to go to the airport.

The Sound Transit Board adopted a new parking policy earlier in March of this year. This slide deck outlines what the agency is looking to begin implementing at some time in 2025 and fully by 2026.

People are encouraged to find different modes of transportation to the light rail stations as parking is finite.

Whether you are being dropped off by a friend or taking a ride share and dropped off in the designated areas at the stations, riding transit to the stations, biking, walking or any other means.

The majority of riders on light rail do not park and ride.

One four car train set can fit between 600 - 800 people depending on the makeup of people sitting and standing.

So when the garage is full, that accounts for roughly one full train. The rest of the riders on our system use different means to get to and from the stations. That is one reason why Sound Transit has worked so closely with our transit partners King County Metro and Community Transit in their service plan changes, to maximize the efficiency of the system as a region.

Sound Transit fares changing August 30, 2024

ORCA card machine
Link 1 (Lynnwood to Angle Lake) and Link 2 (serving the east side)  Line fares changing August 30
$3 flat fare for adult passengers will replace distance-based fares

Starting Friday, August 30, the regular adult fare for Link light rail will be $3. This flat fare will replace Sound Transit’s distance-based fares, which range from $2.25 to $3.50. One-way fares for the T Line in Tacoma will remain $2.

Also starting August 30, the price for an Adult ORCA day pass will drop to $6 from the current $8 as part of a six-month promotional period. Under this ORCA promotion, the price for a reduced-fare pass will drop from $4 to $2.

The ORCA LIFT program is unchanged, and youth 18 and under continue to ride free.

The change to flat fares will simplify Link travel by eliminating the need for passengers using ORCA cards to tap off when they complete their trip. Link 1 Line and 2 Line passengers will only need to tap before entering the fare-paid zone.

Sounder train passengers will continue to tap on before boarding and tap off when they exit.

The Sound Transit Board approved the move to the new $3 flat fare for Link 1 and 2 Lines in December 2023 following public and passenger engagement about the proposed change, and after considering the potential impacts on ridership, equity and the agency financial plan.

"After months of careful consideration, the Board has decided on a simple, flat fare to help boost ridership in the post-pandemic era, facilitate seamless regional integration, uphold our commitment to equity and maintain financial responsibility.
"These changes will enable daily commuters, occasional riders and visitors to easily and confidently rely on transit to get around," said King County Executive and Sound Transit Board Chair Dow Constantine.

Fares on Link have not changed since 2015. As the system expands, distance-based fares would become more complicated with some fare rates reaching $5 or more. The new flat fare is simpler and will position Link fares to integrate better within the regional transit system.

“Moving to a flat fare will make it easier for people to take Link light rail at a time when we expect many new riders with the imminent opening of the 1 Line to the Lynnwood City Center Station, the completion of the 2 Line to downtown Seattle and the expansion of service to Federal Way,” said Sound Transit Interim CEO Goran Sparrman.

The change to flat fares coincides with the opening of the Lynnwood Link Extension on August 30. This extension to the 1 Line will add 8.5 miles and four new stations, including the first ones in Snohomish County. Link 2 Line service to Downtown Redmond is expected to open early next year, followed later in the year by the rest of the 2 Line. The Federal Way extension is set to open in early 2026.

Answers to readers' questions about the Shoreline North light rail station

Shoreline North 185th Station
Aerial photo by David Carlos
By Diane Hettrick

In anticipation of the opening of the light rail stations on August 30, 2024, readers have sent in a few questions regarding the Shoreline North station at 185th.

I asked Erik Ashlie-Vinke, Government & Community Relations Director – North Corridor and here are his responses.

1.  Will the station be ready by the August 30th opening date?

Yes the station will be ready for opening on North Shoreline.

2.  Are there elevators at the station?

There are elevators at the station.

3.  When we are on Link 1 Line and getting off at the 185th Station are there going to be buses people can catch? I am in a wheelchair and need to get to Aurora Transit

Erik contacted Metro with this questions and this is their response:

“The long-term stops have been closed due to Link construction. I asked our bus stop folks and they are looking into whether there is a safe place to put temporary stops for Aug 30-Sep 13. The currently active stops are not close to the station. So the answer is, “Metro is looking at using temporary stops closer to the station, if it can be done safely, before service changes to use the station’s bus loop starting on September 14.”

Otherwise, the following bus service at Shoreline North/185th will be available with the September service change:

King County Metro
Community Transit
Of those three routes, the Metro 348 and CT Swift Blue Line will provide connections from Shoreline North/185th to Aurora/99.

Metro should update in the next week on whether or not they are able to bring the 348 to Shoreline North/185th before opening day.
